The University of Miami women’s basketball team got back in the win column Thursday night at the BankUnited Center, rolling past Pittsburgh, 79-55.
Junior guard Adrienne Motley scored 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting (72.7 percent) and Michelle Woods nearly recorded a triple-double in the win. The redshirt senior finished with 11 points, a co-game-high nine rebounds and a game- and career-high nine assists.
“Chelle is just a problem-solver. We talk about feeding each other and having spoons that are too long to feed yourself. So, go across the table and feed your teammate,” Miami head coach Katie Meier said. “She was doing that all night, just feeding and feeding. She had real positive energy, was really caring about other people and making the right basketball play.”
The Hurricanes forced Pittsburgh (8-7, 0-2 ACC) into seven turnovers in the first period and took a 13-12 lead after 10 minutes of action.
Miami opened the second quarter on a 10-0 run that included a pair of 3-pointers by Motley. The Hurricanes made four-straight field goals during the run and held the Panthers scoreless for the first three minutes and six seconds of the second session, grabbing a 23-12 lead.
Overall, the Hurricanes outscored Pittsburgh 24-10 in the second quarter and led by 15, 37-22, at the break. Motley capped the frame with a jump shot just seconds before the buzzer and led all scorers at halftime with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field and 2-of-2 at the line. Woods had seven assists in the first 20 minutes, tying her career high for a full game.
Miami’s offense continued to click in the third period and the Hurricanes extended their lead to 25 on multiple occasions. After Pittsburgh trimmed it back down to 20, Miami ended the session on a 9-0 run that ended with a layup by freshman forward/center Emese Hof with just two seconds on the clock. The 29-point lead, 66-37, was Miami’s largest of the game to that point.
In the final session, the Hurricanes continued to build that advantage and led by as much as 33, en route to their 14th victory of the season. Miami moved to 10-0 at home on the year with the 24-point win.
The Hurricanes shot a season-best 52.5 percent (31-of-59) overall and had their best shooting half of the season at 64.0 percent (16-of-25) in the second half.
“We’ll win a lot of games overall if we’re shooting that percentage,” Meier said, “but we’ll lose a lot if we keep turning it over. We’re just about there on our offense in terms of our flow and our early looks.”
In addition to the strong the performances by Motley, who was 4-of-4 from 3-point range, and Woods, redshirt junior forward Keyona Hayes was superb in the frontcourt for Miami. She tied her season high with 14 points and made all seven of her field goal attempts.
Three players finished the game in double figures for the Panthers, with freshman guard/forward Brenna Wise posting a team-high 15 points. Freshman guard Tania Lamb added 12 points and freshman forward Kalista Walters chipped in with 11.
The Hurricanes quadrupled Pittsburgh in fast break points, leading 24-6, and also had an 18-8 edge in second chance points.
Miami will continue its ACC slate this weekend when it travels to Clemson, S.C., to face the Tigers Sunday at 1 p.m. at Jervey Gym.
lets go lady Canes......

Mark my words, Ole Miss is gonna get busted for recruiting violations in the next few years. That school was never in the top 15 for recruiting and for last few years, they have been in the top 10 and currently #1. Ole Miss,...#1 really?? Something's not right....

The Edge entering the HOF? Just like last year, it seems a long shot, but it'd be nice:
(AP) Brett Favre is one step away from entering the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The class of 2016 will be decided on Feb. 6, the day before the Super Bowl, with inductions scheduled for August.
Also making the cut to 15 are Morten Andersen, Steve Atwater, Don Coryell, Terrell Davis, Tony Dungy, Kevin Greene, Marvin Harrison, Joe Jacoby, Edgerrin James, John Lynch, Orlando Pace and Kurt Warner.

Chud moving up:
The Indianapolis Colts have promoted associate head coach Rob Chudzinski to the role of offensive coordinator, the team announced Thursday.
The 47-year-old was hired by the Colts as a special assistant to Pagano before the 2014 season. The two have history working together going back to their college coaching days, working at Miami from 1996-2000.

Just heard Rosenhaus on WQAM congratulate our staff for getting all our juniors to return, including Coley.
that guy is pretty much in the know about those things. Found it interesting.
Posted by: Go Canes! | January 08, 2016 at 07:51 AM
Coach L and Coach Mieir are two of the best basketball coaches in America, and they both happen to coach on one campus.
Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | January 08, 2016 at 08:10 AM
Kinda worried that Rosenhaus had contact with Coley
Posted by: SinisterCane | January 08, 2016 at 08:20 AM
But we didn't get all of our juniors to come back because Artie Burns is leaving lol
Very glad Coley is coming back if true
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 08, 2016 at 08:40 AM
Sorry Ohio, I forgot to mention he said everybody but Artie because he was a no-brainer due to his family situation.
Posted by: Go Canes! | January 08, 2016 at 08:46 AM
All good, Go. I didn't hear the interview, so I thought he said all juniors came back.

Kevin Beard will not return to Miami.

I can only assume that CMR has someone better lined up otherwise I assume KB would have stayed on staff.

Hey, maybe it'll be Curtis Johnson and Canes93 will make me eat crow. We'll see.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 08, 2016 at 09:44 AM
Well, everybody wanted change, now we'll be getting a heavy dose of it.
It's hard to tell whether the total purge was the better approach than having at least some continuity.
It's imperative though that the new staff quickly builds ties to the community, especially the HS coaches at the schools with the most talent in the area. Everybody's recruiting SFl these days, so we have to use the proximity to our advantage.
Posted by: VfB_Cane | January 08, 2016 at 09:51 AM
@DavidFurones90
Mark Richt will not be retaining former WR coach Kevin Beard, he informed him this morning.
So it was Richt not wanting Beard back, rather than Beard turning down an offer. That has only been the case with Scott, as far as I remember.
Posted by: VfB_Cane | January 08, 2016 at 09:54 AM
Ohio, CJ has always been a possibility. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure that out.
Posted by: Lur-ker | January 08, 2016 at 09:54 AM
Coach Baez still here. Don't forget that re: recruiting
Posted by: Lur-ker | January 08, 2016 at 09:55 AM
Supposedly Richt is keeping Baez, too. He sees the value with him. That guy is big for us behind the scenes.

Posted by: 1mg of Epi | January 08, 2016 at 10:07 AM
If it is CJ that would be great. Really believe he is a great position coach and OC. He has a lot of experience at coaching wr's and being a head coach.
He also has ties in Louisiana. Tulane's offense was never a problem, it was talent and defense.
The #1 priority will be to keep Bruce. Not only b/c of his talent, but b/c of other players who want to play with this dude.

Old data. Check my links. No reasonable person can look at all the data available and come to any conclusion other than the SEC teams bring in significantly more revenue. According to ^^^^^ this logic, Wake Forest's revenue is similar to any SEC's team. Let that sink in.

I have a very good friend on the Coral Gables coaching staff, and he tells me that Amir Rasul is the real deal. He is also a Cane fan and he hoped that he would flip from F$U b/c the kid is a game changer.
I have not seen a full game, but from what my boy was telling me, the kid is real. He mentioned that Rasul is built Gore like, really strong lower base. Hope he flips.

Rasul has elite speed. He is NOT built like Gore from what I've seen, but that's just on film. Never seen him live and in person.

Damn sucks for KB like dhis passion and work in videos..... but ill tell you what was the nail in the coffin for him guys, it was when he was agreeing with NO'D in that recruiting video lol.
Hopefully whoever we bring in is a big hire as it will be key in keeping Sam Bruce committed.
I know he said he committed to the school and not the coach, but he also said in another interview that it would play a role in his decision.

None locally. I don't know them. Probably out of Cleveland, Dayton, Akron, Columbus, etc, though.
The highest level of team that's closest one to me is Beadling (based out of Pittsburgh) and the ODP teams in Ohio (Youngstown, I think) and WV (Beckley).

All those dropped passes in the bowl game didn't help either. We also have to look at what kind of blocking did our WR group do and how many times did they get flagged. A WR has to do more than just catch a ball.
Posted by: raizecane | January 08, 2016 at 12:18 PM
Rumph's sense of timing was always superior to Beard's going back to when they played.
Yet another thing that apparently never changes. ..
