Junior catcher Zack Collins was selected in the first round of the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Chicago White Sox Thursday night, becoming the first Hurricane drafted in the first round since 2010.
Collins, a Baseball America first-team All-American, was selected 10th overall by Chicago. He is the first Hurricane to be selected by the White Sox since the 2009 season, and the 14th MLB first-round selection in Miami history.
“It’s indescribable, a dream come true for me,” Collins said. “I’m very excited to hopefully compete for a national championship coming up, and then get my professional career started for the White Sox. I’m proud to be a part of such a great organization.”
The lefthanded slugger delivered another dominant season both hitting and behind the plate in 2016. A finalist for the Johnny Bench Award honoring the nation’s top catcher, Collins is also a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award presented by USA Baseball and the Dick Howser Trophy, honoring the nation’s top collegiate player.
“I had an idea of where I was going to go, but there’s nothing like hearing the commissioner of the MLB [Rob Manfred] call your name,” Collins said. “My dad was crying, just hugging him, celebrating with my family, knowing that all the hard work that has been put into it has finally paid off…it was an amazing feeling.”
Collins has batted .358 for the season with team-leading totals of 13 home runs and 53 RBI. His 69 walks are tops amongst all players nationwide, while his .534 on-base percentage and .631 slugging percentage are also team highs and rank among the ACC’s best figures.
The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native continued his ascent into the Miami record books with another prolific year, and currently ranks among the top 10 all-time in both home runs and RBI as a Hurricane.

Question...is Lake Osceola saltwater or brackish? I remember being by the music building in the early 90s looking down at it and I swear I saw several barracuda floating near the surface. There was also a time that a manatee apparently turned up in there.

^^^^I'm pretty sure it's freshwater, Soup would probably know better. You might of saw an alligator gar which might look like a barracuda.

There are gar and snakeheads in those lakes now. Even freshwater tarpon.
Could have been any of those.
Don't ever remember hearing about cudas being in any brackish lakes.
Posted by: Go Canes! | June 10, 2016 at 11:06 AM
I personally have never seen a cuda or an alligator gar there, I admit that I thought it was a nice feature but never thought that deeply about it when I was a student or afterwards when I've visited campus.
I DID know it was manmade and assumed it was fresh, but I suppose it could be somewhat brackish. Here's an interesting article from the Miami Hurricane:

According to that article it is connected to biscayne bay, and does have barracuda!
Posted by: 1mg of Epi | June 10, 2016 at 12:50 PM
Awesome...that solves a 23 year mystery for me then. Fairly certain that it was a group of large barracudas (I've seen alligator gar and these were different). Fascinated to read that two American crocodiles were living there a few years ago. Shouldn't those have been removed as a threat to students? Some of the walkways alongside the lake, especially by where the architecture building was at in the 90s were fairly close to the water.
Posted by: TonyCane | June 10, 2016 at 12:59 PM
CaneRock...I once saw what I presume was a water moccosin being dispatched by workers alongside the lake in the early 90s
Posted by: TonyCane | June 10, 2016 at 01:02 PM
Water moccasins can be found inland in Florida anywhere there's water, like lakes, canals, etc. So it wouldn't be a shock for there to be one there.
In reading that article, I learned stuff I never knew. Like I had no idea that it eventually connected to Biscayne Bay. That would explain the variable salinity and finding both fresh and salt water species.

CIS:
Jim Harbaugh up the Recruiting Game to a New Level
Harbaugh's ties to Paramus Catholic keep growing stronger, and that helps Michigan's recruiting.
Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh has already laid pretty substantial groundwork at Paramus Catholic, the New Jersey school that produced top overall 2016 prospect and Wolverines commit Rashan Gary.
Harbaugh is giving the commencement speech to seniors at the school on Thursday, after he hosts a big satellite camp there on Wednesday.
Now Harbaugh's program will host Paramus Catholic on its own field. The Paladins will open their 2016 season with a game at Michigan Stadium on Sept. 2, which will bring a couple more blue-chip recruits right to Michigan's doorstep.
The Wolverines are recruiting four-star Paramus Catholic linebacker Drew Singleton and defensive tackle Corey Bolds for 2017, plus four-star quarterback Allan Walters for 2018.
They'll all get a nice, close look at the Big House, and it won't count as one of their five "official visits," even though they'll literally be using the same facilities as Michigan's players. In that sense, it's a genius maneuver by Harbaugh.
It's not unusual for high school teams to play games in college stadiums, but it's definitely uncommon for teams to cross state lines (or several state lines) to do it. ESPN noted that, beside Paramus Catholic and its St. Frances (Md.) opponent, 14 other teams were slated to play this year at the Big House, and all were Michigan schools.
Star Michigan defensive back Jabrill Peppers played at Paramus Catholic, too, and former head coach Chris Partridge is now on Harbaugh's staff. The Wolverines' connection to the school isn't an entirely new thing. It's not going away anytime soon.

It is brackish, mainly fresh water to start but also connected to Biscayne Bay via the Coral Gables Waterway that runs through the area and much of Coral Gables.
That means almost all species of fresh and salt water fish could be found in the lake, barracudas included. Manatees would be rare due to access through canals and culverts they would have to pass through to get there, but maybe possible. It is also very possible for there have been gators and/or crocks in the lake at any given time but also not common.
I could give you a tour of Coral Gables that would blow your mind and make your head spin, including the location of the UM President's house which I have been to many times. It would cost you $20 of course but it would be the BEST $20 you ever spent.

Positive of the night: 4 superregional openers tonight and 3 of the 4 have the visiting underdogs either having won or ahead thus far, but the U is the one that held serve. Nice hitting for the U, even with a few blown opps. Pitching in the 9th nearly made me feel like Fred Sanford calling for Elizabeth, but the W happened. With the massive glut of unmovable contracts on that roster think it's safe to say their championship window is closed for good.

Can't say that about this franchise. For decades Riley has always shaped the rosters here with teams capable of winning it all.
He's played Showtime ball with LA, down and dirty with the Knicks and Heat with Zo, then completely overhauled his rosters multiple times to help DWade and LeBron get their rings.
Cleveland will flounder fter this while the Heat will constantly be competitive.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people. Or some saying like that.
In principle, I'd agree with some level of gun control given the sheer number and degree of these incidents. However, taking away the people's (fire)power vs a government which is not to be trusted -- including the Obama administration! -- could potentially have catastrophic and abusive governmental consequence. Please see Operation Fast and Furious where the (Obama) gov willingly armed the Mexican drug cartels with automatic weapons leading to countless civilian casualties and effectively terrorist takeover of a large region of Mexico. Any government who does such things is never to be trusted on gun control and this administration is perhaps the most guilty.
