Junior catcher Zack Collins was selected in the first round of the 2016 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Chicago White Sox Thursday night, becoming the first Hurricane drafted in the first round since 2010.
Collins, a Baseball America first-team All-American, was selected 10th overall by Chicago. He is the first Hurricane to be selected by the White Sox since the 2009 season, and the 14th MLB first-round selection in Miami history.
“It’s indescribable, a dream come true for me,” Collins said. “I’m very excited to hopefully compete for a national championship coming up, and then get my professional career started for the White Sox. I’m proud to be a part of such a great organization.”
The lefthanded slugger delivered another dominant season both hitting and behind the plate in 2016. A finalist for the Johnny Bench Award honoring the nation’s top catcher, Collins is also a semifinalist for the Golden Spikes Award presented by USA Baseball and the Dick Howser Trophy, honoring the nation’s top collegiate player.
“I had an idea of where I was going to go, but there’s nothing like hearing the commissioner of the MLB [Rob Manfred] call your name,” Collins said. “My dad was crying, just hugging him, celebrating with my family, knowing that all the hard work that has been put into it has finally paid off…it was an amazing feeling.”
Collins has batted .358 for the season with team-leading totals of 13 home runs and 53 RBI. His 69 walks are tops amongst all players nationwide, while his .534 on-base percentage and .631 slugging percentage are also team highs and rank among the ACC’s best figures.
The Pembroke Pines, Fla., native continued his ascent into the Miami record books with another prolific year, and currently ranks among the top 10 all-time in both home runs and RBI as a Hurricane.

ACC Umps. That didn't need to be called.

but any discussion about gun control needs to be prefaced witb the acknowledgemnt that Americans have a right to so called "assault weapons."
Posted by: The Dude | June 12, 2016 at 02:08 PM
Why?
Posted by: CaneRock | June 12, 2016 at 02:22 PM
Do those concealed weapons permits come with crystal balls...you're ignorant as hell.
Posted by: CaneRock | June 12, 2016 at 01:58 PM

Ignorant? What does ignorant or a crystal ball have to do with a permit? This is exactly why you need to get a permit, because you DON'T have a chrystal ball! I just want people to be able to protect their family if this tragic thing happens again!

I know we are all bickering back and forth, but I think we all can agree on, is that we have a huge problem on our hands and it's only going to get worse.

Good question. Beacause the conversation is over the second people bring it up. You have to understand around 50% of people will shut down if its brought up, they will block any legislation after that.

Gun nuts can't stop most murders. That Grimmie singer would still be dead. There was a cop at the bar last night from what I read. Still didn't stop a dang thing. Good guys do from time to time stop things though.
What's funny to me is both sides can't see where there is some common ground. For instance, one side says more guns (concealed carry) while the other says more control but neither can see how this could be used to accomplish the same result. I blame our government and their constituents, American corporations.

Awesome Job Canes! On to Omaha and the College World Series for a 25th Time!

Not surprised at all CR. He's been doing a high wire act.
Posted by: The Dude | June 12, 2016 at 03:50 PM
Both sides don't want any compromise at all. See California where they just banned concealed carry AND open carry. Tell me how Californians can bear arms in that situation? How are their 2nd Amendment rights not infringed? Meanwhile in Idaho, we're going to have permitless concealed carry. Trust me, in a city like Boise, more gun issues will come.
Posted by: The Dude | June 12, 2016 at 03:54 PM
Blaming corporations is so lame and tired, and has zero basis in your arguments. Unless it's the gun companies. Even then.
Posted by: Lur-ker | June 12, 2016 at 03:54 PM
The shooter in Orlando went to same high school (Martin County)as I did. He was a couple grades behind my wife.

Our politicians only answer to corporations, not us. We live in a global corporatocracy. Its why banks get to privatize profits and socialize losses. Its why we can bail them out and they can use our money to lobby Congress into making no changes.
