The University of Miami football team enjoyed an efficient practice Tuesday morning on a designated “two-a-day,” with the team slated to gather again later in the afternoon for a kicking scrimmage on the Greentree Field.
"It was one of those short and sweet practices,” head coach Mark Richt said. “We have two today, so I didn't want to wear them completely out…we wanted this to be short.”
The team will have its second full scrimmage of the fall Wednesday morning, and both Richt and his son, quarterbacks coach Jon Richt, will be looking for the answer to a lingering question.
“Who is going to be the No. 2 quarterback?” Mark Richt said. “We need to find that out. That's the biggest question for me right now."
Richt said another battle in camp has seen redshirt sophomore and Miami newcomer Dayall Harris rise to the top of the ‘X’ receiver group. Impressive in the early going, freshman Ahmmon Richards has been battling turf toe while sophomore Lawrence Cager will miss the season with a knee injury.
“Dayall is ahead of everybody. [Darrell] Langham and Ahmmon, [Richards] I would say, are probably battling for the next spot right now,” Richt said.
Harris said his new mentor, wide receivers coach Ron Dugans, has been instrumental in his early success.
“Coach Dugans takes my phone and he will call me just to remind me that, ‘I didn’t bring you down here just to joke around, so get after it and make sure you are studying your playbook,’” Harris said. “With him being (hard) on me and me being (tough) on myself – being critical on the little things that I do – it helps me get better.”
Redshirt sophomore Malik Rosier, one of the players fighting for the No. 2 quarterback spot, has enjoyed the addition of Harris in more ways than one.
“Dayall is a funny kid. He’s a great route runner. He’s fast, agile and quick. He’s a consistent receiver,” Rosier said. “The biggest thing with him is just getting him the ball in space and letting him make moves. He caught a slant and took it like 30 or 40 yards. He’s a very dynamic receiver for us.”

So Homer will probably play this year due to the gray injury.
Posted by: trianglecane | August 16, 2016 at 10:20 PM
Maybe a blessing in disguise for Gray. He'll get a medical redshirt this year. If Walton leaves after his junior year Edwards and Yearby will be gone too as seniors. Gray will be a redshirt senior. That will be his best chance to be the man. I hope everything works out for him...

Co those were my thoughts exactly. I hate to see him get injured I just hope it turns out to work for the kid.

Oh there's a vault and vault security is tight. If you have been vaulted you must follow vault protocol to retrieve vaulted material from the vault unless you piss off the vault master in which case said vaulted material may have been vaulted from the vault without explanation...

Players emerging
Over the past few practices, a few guys have really started to assert themselves and show their talent. Hopefully, it carries into the scrimmage and the season.
Malcolm Lewis is consistently making plays. He looks as confident as I've ever seen him and he's really starting to attack the ball. Physically, his routes have some pop and he has his deep speed back. Hope to see it continue.
Trent Harris has been great all camp but is really stepping up lately. In the past few days, he's had numerous sacks and pressures, a diving interception, a huge forced fumble and a batted down ball in coverage. Harris is just a good all-around player who is thriving in the new system.
Zach McCloud is really seizing the opportunity at linebacker with Grace in limbo. He is a missile sideline-to-sideline and has a habit of launching himself head-first into opposing offensive linemen. If he stays healthy, his ceiling is as high as anyone's.
The future of the TE position is in good hands. Michael Irvin II has probably seen more targets than anyone on the roster. The backup QBs look to him first because he is so savvy and QB-friendly. Jovani Haskins is more physical than I expected. He's very strong at the point of attack and has pancaked multiple defenders. He's still learning the position (former QB) but has made some spectacular, one-handed catches and displayed great potential as a receiver.
Malek Young is flashing with multiple INTs over the past few days. He started off camp going against the walk-ons and is now getting reps with the second unit. The more chances he gets to compete with the big boys, the better he will look. The 4th corner spot is wide open and Young has as good a shot as anyone.

OFF TOPIC WARNING:
Cushman & Wakefield released their inaugural Florida Population Report, an examination of population trends and its economic impact in Florida.
The report, compiled by Cushman & Wakefield's Research Team, analyzes population growth, employment levels, home values and retail sales activity in Florida's eight major markets – Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Jacksonville, Lakeland (Polk County), Miami-Dade County, Orlando, Tampa-St. Petersburg and West Palm Beach. It issued a statewide report and individual reports for each of the eight markets.
Key report findings
Florida's population will reach 20.7 million by the end of 2016. In 1910, the state had a population of 1 million people; by 1980 it grew to 10 million. Since then, the population has doubled.
Florida's population grew 1.84 percent in the past year, trailing only North Dakota, Colorado and Nevada as the fastest-growing states. Florida trailed California (39.14 million) and Texas (27.5 million) in overall population.
Florida's population grew by more than 1,000 people per day, a pace that has accelerated over the past year. Jobs are the No. 1 reason people are attracted to the state. The trend is driven, in part, by economic challenges in Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico's population declined 1.7 percent over the past year, with most exiting residents settling initially in Florida.
For the past 38 months, Florida's job-growth percentage has exceeded the national average. In the past 12 months, 244,500 new jobs were added, a 3 percent growth rate. Most new jobs supported the expanding healthcare, logistics and home construction markets. Retail and hospitality also contributed to the state's employment performance.
Current home prices in Florida were down $42,000 compared to fourth quarter 2006 values. Prices have rebounded since bottoming out in 2011, however, rising by an average $83,000 in the span of five years. Tight supply and pent up demand are driving price increases and pace of sales.
Retail sales continued to highlight consumer optimism and a favorable local economic climate. Florida's economy enjoyed elevated consumer confidence despite uncertainty at the national level caused by the upcoming presidential campaign.
"Florida remains a national leader in population growth," says Chris Owen, Florida research manager. "This is driven by excellent employment numbers, lagging home prices and favorable consumer sentiment. We foresee this optimism prevailing in the short term."

Feel really bad for Choc's injury and I wish him a speedy recovery.
AR's injury has me more worried from an impact perspective though, because he was projected to be contributing way more, and we are thin at a WR.

Posted by: canezilla | August 17, 2016 at 12:21 PM
Some discussion was had about potentially starting 3 true freshmen on defense.
Remember, the 2008 defense started Forston,Spence, & Brandon Harris that I can remember, and that defense gave UF fits. So true freshmen, given the talent, can have an impact.
Posted by: CaneRock | August 17, 2016 at 12:50 PM
Any college pigskin doesn't like to learn of injuries, but it is a contact sport after all and whatnot. Which leads to my next simpleton notion. Why all this chatter of Miami going ' 10-2 or even 11-1 '? Yes I understand the notion of being positive about the Canes and whatnot. But with the recent injury report coming out of Camp Rich and whatnot. Cane record matters could go south quicker than a NYC minute. hUh
Oh, and one more thing. The regular season ain't even started yet, and that's when the full contact spectrum really begins for real and whatnot. That's why I still SEE-r MY Hurricanes finishing the season 9-3 and finally winning a bowl game. In other words, Miami is ' depth thin ' at certain positions and a crucial injury could put Rich and staff in DIRE STRAITS. If U Know What I Mean. dUh
