For the third time in the last five years and fourth time in program history, the University of Miami soccer team defeated a top-three opponent.
Miami (6-4-0, 1-1-0 ACC) knocked off second-ranked Virginia (8-2-0, 1-1-0 ACC) Thursday night at Cobb Stadium, earning a 2-1 victory against a team that has reached the Sweet 16 each of the last 11 seasons.
The Hurricanes’ two leading scorers, forwards Gracie Lachowecki Kristina Fisher, each notched first-half goals to give Miami a lead it would not relinquish. Additionally, redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce logged a career-high-tying six saves, as Virginia suffered its first loss to an unranked team in over six years.
“What a great night, coming in here and playing a program that’s [one of the best] in the country,” Miami head coach Mary-Frances said. “We know every game in our conference is going to be a competitive game and anybody can win any game. We just went into it with the same mentality that we had to play our A-game, all over the field, not one person could slack off tonight.”
The Hurricanes found the back of the net first, scoring in the 21st minute on their opening shot of the evening.
Junior forward Ronnie Johnson played a nice ball to Lachowecki and the senior dribbled into the box, cut back and slipped it past Virginia senior goalkeeper Morgan Stearns, low to the near post.
The goal for Lachowecki, a 2015 Second Team All-ACC selection, was the 19th of her career, moving her past Ashley Flinn for sole possession of sixth place on the Hurricanes’ career list.
“We’ve been working on that with Gracie. She gets in, she has the speed,” Monroe said. “We had so many opportunities against Florida State the same way and we really committed ourselves this week to finish those opportunities that we get, and Gracie did it.”
Miami doubled its lead in the 42nd minute after freshman forward Bayleigh Chaviers was taken down in the box to earn a penalty kick for the Hurricanes.
Fisher then calmly stepped to the spot and buried the ball in the back of the net, giving her a team-leading seven goals in her freshman campaign, two of which have come on penalty kicks.
“Bayleigh did a wonderful job of trying to get that ball and fighting for it. She is the one who helped us get that PK, so she did a fantastic job,” Monroe said. “Having ‘Fish’ just step up to take that shot—we didn’t tell people who take the PK. I want to see who’s confident, who gets up there. I think she really needed . . . to score a goal in this game today and that really is going to build her confidence going into the next game.”
Buoyed by four first-half saves from Tullis-Joyce, the Hurricanes took its two-goal edge into the locker room at the break.
The Miami defense held strong until the 86th minute, when Virginia finally got on the board. Senior midfielder Alexis Shaffer sent a superb cross to freshman midfielder Zoe Morse and she finished it to give the Cavaliers their lone goal.

Just happened to sign in and see things empty. A trip to Vegas? Wow. Do I need a passport?!
Nice non football article, Soup.
Side note. The Bucks actually traded for Michael Beasley?! Talk about a guy who should run out of a tunnel through a cloud of smoke...
GT was unimpressive. Clemson looks solid, but isn't the team of last year. Louisville will be tough for them

The only time I can hit #1 is when I'm on Twitter when the new blog drops! Oops, I just gave away the secret! Anyway I stopped for dinner on the way home from work and had "that night"! I still don't know how or why it happened but I ended up at the Clermont Lounge in Atlanta! It's the most bizarre, fun place I've been to since I've been in Atlanta. It's where old strippers are put out to pasture!! I can't describe it but it's an Atlanta institution for some reason! Anyway I'm gonna pay for it tomorrow! I'm too old for this shyt!!
Go 'canes!!

That the Hurricanes, Seminoles and Gators all are bunched between 13th and 19th in the national polls this week testifies to their current talent. Their pipelines to the NFL tell you the players they send to Sunday aren’t bad, either.
Florida State (42 players), Florida (38) and Miami (35) all are among national leaders in most NFL players, based on this week’s active rosters.
Elsewhere in the state, UCF has 16 current pros, South Florida nine, FAU six, FIU three and Bethune-Cookman two — 151 in all.
FIU’s trio are Colts receiver T.Y. Hilton, whose 16.1 average is best in the NFL (minimum 150 catches); Jaguars safety Johnathan Cyprien; and Chargers linebacker Tourek Williams.
Here are the UM guys on rosters, by position. Canes listed are starters unless noted, based on current depth charts:
▪ RB: Frank Gore IND, Lamar Miller HOU. Reserves: Duke Johnson CLE (who we’ll see here Sunday). Gore leads all active runners with 12,143 career yards.
▪ WR: Travis Benjamin SD, Allen Hurns JAC. Reserves: Phillip Dorsett IND, Andre Johnson TEN. Johnson, winding down excellent career, has 1,057 career catches.
▪ TE: Jimmy Graham SEA, Greg Olsen CAR. Reserves: Erik Swoope IND, Clive Walford OAK. Graham, Olsen both have made Pro Bowl.
▪ OT: Erick Flowers NYG. Reserves: Eric Winston CIN. Suspended: Seantrel Henderson BUF. OG: Orlando Franklin SD. Reserves: Jon Feliciano OAK. C: Brandon Linder JAC.
▪ DE: Allen Bailey KC, Calais Campbell ARI, Olivier Vernon NYG. DT: Vince Wilfork HOU. Reserves: Olsen Pierre ARI. Campbell, Wilfork have made Pro Bowl.
▪ OLB: Reserves: Anthony Chickillo PIT. IR: Ray-Ray Armstrong SF. ILB: Denzel Perryman SD. Reserves: Thurston Armbrister DET, Sean Spence TEN.
▪ CB: Sam Shields GB. Reserves: Artie Burns PIT, LaDarius Gunter GB, Tracy Howard CLE. S: Reserves: Deon Bush CHI.
▪ ST: Matt Bosher ATL punter. Devin Hester BAL returner. Pat O’Donnell CHI punter. Hester is NFL career leader with 14 punt-return TDs.

A six-pack of Hurricanes football notes:
• UM --- which has 20 oral commitments, including two good quarterbacks and three four-star defensive backs in a 2017 recruiting class rated sixth nationally by Rivals.com --- has about five spots left.
So who is UM targeting?
Remember these names: two elite receivers (Deerfield Beach High/Alabama oral commitment Jerry Jeudy and Louisiana’s DeVonta Smith) plus Georgia-based receiver Jeremiah Holloman; four-star Carol City linebacker De’Andre Wilder; Palm Beach Gardens safety Amari Carter (UM and Notre Dame are strongly in the mix); Fort Lauderdale American Heritage guard Tedarrell Slaton and two defensive ends – Dillard’s Jordan Wright and Miami Central’s Owen Carney.
Wright tells me UM has “a good chance” to land him and one reason is that defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski “knows the right technique to get me [to the NFL]. It’s big that he me” developed four first-rounders at Missouri.
This would be an elite class if UM lands three or four of those.
“Slaton would be the biggest get [of the uncommitted local kids],” recruiting analyst Charles Fishbein said.
Slaton told me in August that he had UM about seventh in his top 10.
• A key oral commitment in this UM class, Central offensive tackle Navaughn Donaldson, told me in August there was more than 70 percent chance he would stick with UM. This week, he told CaneSport he's planning visits to FSU, UF and USC.
"I'm pretty solid," Donaldson told CaneSport. “I see improvement in Miami's program at every position - offensive line, defense, weight room, coaching, all of that. Miami coaches say how happy they are to have me there, that I'm at home, how I fit into their offense.”
• Another key UM oral commitment, Columbus cornerback Christopher Henderson, told InsideTheGators that he's still solid to Miami but visited UF recently and plans to attend UF-LSU instead of UM-FSU on Oct. 8.
Of the Gators, he said: “They just feel comfortable to me and we've got a great bond. They make me feel like family when I am here."
Henderson is also taking visits to Michigan, Tennessee and Alabama. So UM will need to sweat this out.
• Mark Richt, on Mark Walton’s terrific start: "He's very tough. He's a great route runner. He's a great pass protector. I think he runs inside, tackles well outside. He's got good speed. Obviously he can break tackles.

Canes brothers! Good Fri morning to all!
Watched some of GT game last night. ...unless a major improvement from them....or slip up from Us occurs. ...I like our chances next Saturday.
If our front 7 plays as they have been. ..we should have success disrupting the "triple lindy ". ...the offense should also have a big day.
Looking forward to it, can't make the game itself. ...
God bless you and Go Canes!

Ive said this a few times... I live in SEC country here in TN. I am only 15 mins from the GA border, so plenty of GA fans here locally. Not a single fan I know was happy to see him go and ALL had great things to say about him. One guy even said he will be a Miami and GA fan now.
Posted by: UMike | September 23, 2016 at 10:21 AM
I actually called dumbass Finebaum show last year - and posed the question
"What if you swapped coaching staffs from one of your SEC teams and put them in place in MIAMI? "
They didn't entertain because "this is an SEC show "....
Maybe i should play the lottery. .
Haha
God bless you and Go Canes!

CMR has the Canes rolling. I think some people around the country will look at how the Canes perform next week relative to how Clemson performed last night, and they make some judgments about how good this Canes team actually is at this point in the season. A win will keep them in the top 15, but a double-digit blowout win might thrust the Canes into the top 10 conversation.
This Canes team is very good. They are tough, athletic and explosive, and they have a good QB and coaching. Because of the coaching, the Canes players are actually getting better individually each game, and CMR hasn't opened up his playbook yet. Moreover, I don't think the Canes have really started to click on offense yet, and the defense is young so it should only get better with each game.
I think the Canes are actually better (or have the potential to be better) than Clemson, and this Canes team seems to be surprising everyone, except CMR and his staff.

To add to what UMike is saying I live in the Heart of SEC Country. Montgomery, Al which is 90 minutes south of the SEC Headquarters in Downtown Birmingham, and there are thousands of UGA Fans who have adopted Miami as their 2nd team due to Mark Richt. I was at Champs Sports here in Montgomery and their were several UGA Fans buying Miami Hurricanes Adidas T-Shirts, Caps, Polos, Jerseys, and some have said that they have bought tickets to be at the GT Game and at Games this Season some have already been to the Rock(Hard Rock Stadium) which they rave about saying how nice it is. We just need to go into Bobby Dodd and Beat GT Next Saturday at High Noon preferbly Convincingly!

I'm NOT the least bit worried about Georgia Tech and it's Rambling Wreck offense! Because believe or not. Miami will win comfortably and whatnot. The only question I have about the game, is the number of points Miami scores and allows; and how much the spread will be in Miami's DOUBLE-DIGIT victory. huh In other words, it would be nice to see # 12 get some playing time with about six or seven minutes left in the game.

I'm not sold on Lamar Jackson after all. Yes he's fast. But he's no secret anymore. Let's see when defenses really key on him. He's not a good passer. Take his run out and that's 70% of the offense. As for their defense, any defense looks like the Great Wall of China if your offense is putting up 60 before half time. Defenses can play free and fast in that case.
