We will learn a lot about Kaaya and the rest of the Canes on Saturday. From watching the Canes play, I think they are pretty strong up front and they are well coached and prepared. The skill positions are all very talented, but thin. I think the Canes can match up with any team out there, but Saturday will be a test to prove that the first two games are examples of what we can expect to see for the rest of the season.

Jeeeez I leave for a couple days and u you damn near burn the place down. This is why we can't have nice things.

Weather will be good, partly sunny. I believe they have a turf field. Only 2 hours away from me. Stadium seats about 30k and they brought in more bleachers. The first big time team to ever play football their, unless u count maybe wake forest. They'll be crammed in there like sardines. It's a good thing we are playing them instead of November, it snows a ton there in the mountains. The herb sees kaaya having to earn his keep this week, 27-14.

thirstybuzzardcane

TBC, good point. But D. Jackson, Bethel, Redwine, etc are all young also. With this run heavy offense the LB's are important, so their youth could be an issue.

Posted by: UMike | September 15, 2016 at 04:22 PM

Agree, at least Appalachian State is a run heavy team. It will be easier for our young LB's to defend....If they just react and kill we'll be fine!

That's actually the best argument for a closer game. App state has to hope for this: transition pains to new schemes, coaches, getting the old losing culture out, etc.

I just think/hope that the team is onboard and the transition is complete. Even with these issues we should still outmuscle out-talent them. It would have to be a perfect storm of all of the above, adding a bad Kayaa game, and bad/inexperience issues on defense, for them to even have a chance.

I just think we click enough overall that it won't be close.

Surfercane

Actually, we have veterans on defense. The only position we're young at is linebacker.

SHOCKING! Lol

Posted by: Ohio_Cane | September 15, 2016 at 03:09 PM

This isnt like before when I would be worried cause Golden and staff were so horrible. This isnt a worried about CMR thing... its a were young at some spots, have new scheme, OL issues etc going on the road against a tough, experienced team. I believe we win (i actually bet on it), but I think it could be close for a while.

TheeMackJones

Two national weather sites don't call for rain on Saturday. huh Only cloudy weather. duh

TheeMackJones

A torrential monsoon downpour could effect the game on Saturday. And if the weather report is accurate, then the running game will have a mighty big influence on the outcome of the game.

UMike

We are still very young on defense and have played glorified high school teams so far. This will be a hostile environment, the first for the youngsters. The OL has struggled in the passing game. They are a good, well coached team. Plenty of reasons this game could be close. Im going with 30-17 Miami.

thirstybuzzardcane

Is it suppose to rain in Boone on Saturday?

Lur-ker

We win and it won't be close.

The only way it's close is if Kayaa craps the bed and/or our freshmen trio of linebackers make too many over-aggressive, over-pursue mistakes.

I challenge anyone to find a player on App that we would have even recruited. Just one.

So the talent level isn't even comparable, so what's left is coaching. Last year I'd be worried. But it's not last year.

Why should it be close again?

UMike

I think it will be close and we pull away slightly at the end.

CIS:

Learning from UT Game: Things to look for at Boone

- In App State's lone comparable game (UTenn) this year, they allowed 6 TFLs and no sacks.

What that means for us?

I would be surprised if we don't see another double digit TFL game or near it for our defense. Yes, our two previous opponents were not as good. Yes, App State runs the ball more. But, I think you'll see Diaz use the blitz to stop the run, as he's known to do.

- 2 of those TFLs came from Kendall Vickers, UTenn's DT who was a former 3-star, 225 pound SSDE a few years back. Through 2 games, he's arguably been their most productive DL from a stats perspective.

What that means for us?

I don't believe Vickers is as talented as any of our top 3 DTs. Make of that what you wish. Diaz and Kul can place rotate DTs against their weaker Guard for the entire afternoon. App State does have a pro prospect listed along their OL interior.

- UT's Derek Barnett was more or less neutralized against App St.

What that means for us?

Barnett is a likely top 15 pick in next year's NFL draft. A former 4 star, he's been really productive. He's our Chad Thomas, though his build and position as an Edge rusher are more comparable to D-Jax against App state. Basically, don't expect a ton of sacks on Saturday unless App State goes down huge early, which is not entirely expected - especially if the weather fails to hold up. Their passing game and QB's style doesn't lend itself to sacks.

- UT's leading solo tackler was their FS

What that means for us?

Manny Diaz likes to fit a particular coverage behind his aggressive fronts. Without going into that detail, it places the Safeties in a high pressure situation where, if the other team goes spread, the two safeties are expected to read the inside WR and many times fill the alley. Watch their feet at the snap. Instead of the 2 steps back you often saw last year, our 2 deep Safeties will remain relatively stagnant, pause or even lean forward. It's a significant change in how to play defense. I actually half expect Diaz to go slightly away from this coverage and show some single high safety with Jamal Carter coming straight downhill to fill. Don't be surprised if one of our three leading tacklers is either Carter, Jaquan or Jenkins.

- Two top tacklers for UT were both LBs

What that means for us?

This one is a little more obvious, I think. We're playing a zone option team. Our LBs are going to have to play well and tackle well on both inside and outside zones. Perhaps I am overly optimistic, but I think Shaq and Pinkney are made for stopping this type of offense. When the ball snaps, Shaq will already be halfway to blowing up his gap. Wouldn't be surprised if both of these guys end up with double digit tackles for the afternoon.

- App State's QB was 15/23 for 108 total passing yards

What that means for us?

I've discussed this throughout the week. The reason I'm confused by the vegas line and people's concerns is because our primary soft spot as a defense is not an area their QB has shown to accurately hit. What's more, against the type of competition they'll face on Saturday, App State has failed to show the ability to push the ball downfield. Of course, let's consider that Tennessee has two pro prospects at Corner. Luckily for us, I believe we clearly have one and Redwine is young and playing solidly.

- App State was 3/13 on 3rd down conversions vs UTenn

What that means for us?

It goes along with the above about their QB's accuracy. I'll believe it when I see it. First things first: we have to keep them behind schedule and in uncomfortable 3rd down scenarios. If Saturday ends up being a rainy muck, this becomes even more important. You'd think our pass coverage is the most important key for this 3rd down conversion bullet point. I think it's a singular position: DT.

Thinking back to Diaz's scheme and its weak points, one of the biggest pressure points is whether a DT can hold up inside against a double team so that it places less pressure on the MLB getting chipped at the second level, which places less strain on the Safeties being asked to fill. Therefore, Kendrick Norton, please stand up. My personal perspective is you're going to see a hard, hard slanting defense and lots of gap exchange on 1st and 2nd down. Diaz will try to force as many 3rd and 7+ as he feasibly can.

- App State and Tennessee played an incredibly tight game and went into OT

What that means for us?

I grinned ear to ear when I saw this live. App State had to show nearly everything sans whatever handful of wrinkles they've installed. We should not be completely caught by surprise more than a few times. We know what they'll do offensively. They have to now beat us in individual matchups and I don't believe they can do that consistently enough.

Ok, Im off to the shelter... 58/Ohio etc has to take over... later sppacers

- Enjoyed time at Miami vs FAU
- Talked to Richt in Club LIV (That's awesome) about staying home
- Loves Alabama, their offense and the way they use their receivers
- Will visit again for FSU game; wants Canes to win
- Wants to see Miami throw the ball more; they are run heavy right now (But he likes Alabama??)
- Doesn't know if Miami will be in his top 5
- Heavy Alabama lean (My interpretation)

Looks like an uphill battle (again) for the best WR in South Florida. Seems like Saban's claws are deep here

Ariz:

Walton and Yearby look to continue success

Miami’s rushing attack has powered the Canes in the first two games against FAMU and Florida Atlantic. Mark Richt will need his ball carriers to have another standout performance on the road this weekend against Appalachian State.

Sophomore Mark Walton and junior Joseph Yearby have spearheaded the ground game for the Hurricanes, each having gone for 100 yards in the first two games. Gus Edwards also got over the century-mark in the season opener against the Rattlers.

“We take a lot of pride in it. That's what I came here for – to run the ball. All the great running backs came before us and we all enjoy when our number is called and we come in the game,” said Walton.

Some Canes fans have worried about a potential letdown this week, but there has not been any signs of that this week in Coral Gables. The Miami players seem to be respecting their opponent, especially considering it is the first road game of the season.

Walton, who scored four times for the Canes last week, knows that App State won’t be easy pickins’.

“It’s going to be one of the tougher environments that we will be in this year,” Walton said. “It’s going to be a huge crowd up there and one for the largest things in their hometown.”

“As a team, we enjoy it. We just have to come through a lot of adversity,” he added.

Joseph Yearby led Miami in carries last game with 20. He assessed what he’s seen from the Mountaineers on film.

“They like to bring a lot of field pressure. Those guys are tough – they’re very disciplined and they’re going to come to play,” the Miami Central product Yearby said.

“They swarm to the ball. All eleven guys try to get there at once.”

Both Walton and Yearby believe that it’s only a matter of time before their success opens the door for Brad Kaaya to put up some big numbers.

Walton explained where he thinks Kaaya’s struggles from last weekend came from.

“I think that’s because they key on him and that makes it even easier for us. Now that they’ve seen we can run the ball, they’ll probably try to stop the run in this game,” he said.

Yearby echoed Walton’s thoughts.

“Going into the game knowing that we have two running backs who can run the ball, it can open up the pass game for the quarterback and receivers,” Yearby said.
