Arnold Daniel Palmer (September 10, 1929 – September 25, 2016) was an American professional golfer, who is generally regarded as one of the greatest players in professional golf history. He won numerous events on both the PGA Tour and Champions Tour, dating back to 1955.
Nicknamed "The King", he was one of golf's most popular stars and its most important trailblazer, because he was the first superstar of the sport's television age, which began in the 1950s.
Palmer's social impact on behalf of golf was perhaps unrivaled among fellow professionals; his humble background and plain-spoken popularity helped change the perception of golf as an elite, upper-class pastime to a more democratic sport accessible to middle and working classes.
Palmer is part of "The Big Three" in golf during the 1960s, along with Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, who are widely credited with popularizing and commercializing the sport around the world.
Palmer's most prolific years were 1960–1963, when he won 29 PGA Tour events, including five major tournament victories, in four seasons.
In 1960, he won the Hickok Belt as the top professional athlete of the year and Sports Illustrated magazine's "Sportsman of the Year" award. He built up a wide fan base, often referred to as "Arnie's Army", and in 1967 he became the first man to reach one million dollars in career earnings on the PGA Tour.
By the late 1960s Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player had both acquired clear ascendancy in their rivalry, but Palmer won a PGA Tour event every year from 1955 to 1971 inclusive, and in 1971 he enjoyed a revival, winning four events.
Palmer won the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average four times: 1961, 1962, 1964, and 1967. He played on six Ryder Cup teams: 1961, 1963, 1965, 1967, 1971, and 1973. He was the last playing captain in 1963, and captained the team again in 1975.

Would it possible that Notre Dame might let Kelly go and go after Miles. I know ND has big time money where they can afford to do that.

Les Miles could see how things shake out at Oklahoma, Penn State, Houston could be interesting, Baylor, FSU, Notre Dame maybe, Louisville. The dominoes are just begining to fall. All I know is that its so awesome to be looking out on the college football landscape wondering this with Richt as our HC. Ask yourself this Miami Hurricanes fans, are you better off now than you were 4 years ago, lol.

Not sure if anyone has reported it, but FIU fired Ron Turner.

USC is almost certainly an open job at the end of the year.

Oregon might be also.

The Ducks let Brady Hoke bring in that Big 10 3-4 and now they cant stop anyone. Lol.

On a slightly brighter note of the day than all of the losses, congrats to former Cane, Yasmani Grandal, on winning the west with the Dodgers.

LSU will finish the season with Ed. After this season, they will pursue Jimbo hard! I also think USCw will consider Les Miles.

Mr. Palmer was before my time, but none the less may he rest in peace. I am truly saddened however, by the passing of Jose Fernandez and that unfulfilled life. Just getting to the mountain top and never getting to enjoy the view. Hopefully his earnings to this point have set up his soon to be born daughter for life. Sad tragic story.

LOL...yeah, I don't see Miles as a coach that you bank your future on. And no dis-respect, but I frankly don't see Him as a legit candidate for any of the jobs mentioned here. He's getting up there in age, boring, and what has He brought to the game as far as innovations???

He brings a name, a ring, and recruiting chops. Wouldn't surprise me to see him get another high profile gig.

Graduating from Miami Senior High School in 1960 Arnold Palmer was my Hero I loved Arnie
Palmer. He was the reason I played golf. I felt very emotional last night watching the different tributes to him. I will miss Arnold Palmer.

If South Carolina can hire Muschump, someone will hire Miles. He is still a name.

Epi...I can see Him getting a GO5 job, but I don't see USC or ND backin' up the armored truck for em'.
Posted by: CaneRock | September 26, 2016 at 09:46 AM
Who will hire Miles? Especially in a P5 conference.
Serious question.
Candidates?

I'm a big time golfer/fan! I bet 90% of people my age (36) haven't even heard of Arnold Palmer. Great human being and role model!
Chi Chi Rodriguez lives in my town and I saw him at a golf tournament I was in a couple of months ago. That guy is my favorite, he's one funny mother fuker!
I also met Gary Player. He was on my flight about 5 years back and started to talk to him at baggage claim. There is another class act guy. I think he was surprised a person my age actually recognized him.

It probably will be a function of number of openings vs number of splashy candidates available. There is only a handful of big names available any post season. Let's say Kelly leaves LOU, goes wherever. Les would be a candidate. I don't think Texas comes a calling, but the tier right below will.
Consider Les vs. CMR. Similar situations. Les has a ring.

Can't think of one P5 that would take him, outside of Kansas, maybe Minnesota, Purdue, or some other perennial cellar dweller.
I don't think a serious program committed to win takes him. Name one. Louisville won't take him. Guaranteed.

You said it CR. None of those programs listed above are hiring les miles as he was a failure at LSU with all those built in advantages and a great recruiting classes he had there. And people say but he won a ship, well he's also the only one to do it with two freakin losses and needed a day in 2007 where like five teams ahead of him all lost on the last day of the season to even get them in that game. Dudes brand of football doesn't work in this day and age. The game has definitely passed him by. As far as his replacement, option number 1 Herman. He's a southeast Texas guy which is the only place LSU really goes out of state to recruit And he's and offensive coach that developes QBs. Option number 2 art briles. Again a southeast Texas guy with a penchent for developing QBs and hire powered offenses. What I can guarantee is who ever they hire will be an offensive minded coach. So any D minded coaches you can scratch off right now.

Les Miles to USC?
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | September 26, 2016 at 10:40 AM
Lot of people here in Austin think that Art Briles will be going to LSU.
Posted by: TonyCane | September 26, 2016 at 10:43 AM
Can Briles really be hired with what went on at Baylor under him?
Posted by: 30CINCO | September 26, 2016 at 10:45 AM
Lurker, IDK what teams, but IMO at seasons end there will surely be teams calling. He is a top recruiter with a winning record and a ring. Someone is going to take him. IDK if it will be a top program, but if there are P5 openings, he will get a job. Worst coaches have been hired, see Muchamp at USCe
Posted by: UMike | September 26, 2016 at 10:53 AM

Posted by: 1mg of Epi | September 26, 2016 at 10:21 AM
I was gonna say something similar. CMR just wasnt winning enough for UGA, but he was winning. Miles has a ring and better recruiting classes. IDK how old he is though.
Posted by: UMike | September 26, 2016 at 10:55 AM
Lane Kiffin is a name to watch for LSU
Posted by: 30CINCO | September 26, 2016 at 11:07 AM
Take Louisville all day at +2 against Clemson. They will win by 2 touchdowns or more.
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | September 26, 2016 at 11:30 AM
Clemson is going to "upset" Louisville IMO
Posted by: UMike | September 26, 2016 at 11:37 AM
Except that Les Miles is considered a flake and Richt isn't.
Again, no serious P5 program will look at him.
You can add Maryland and Kansas to the list I put up in my prior post. Only dead dog programs will show interest. You know the ones.
Les Miles will NOT get a serious P5 job, i.e., a program that will ever contend for even its own conference championship.
Posted by: Lur-ker | September 26, 2016 at 11:48 AM
Arnold Palmer was a great golfer and gentleman with a Miami connection. Rest in Peace!

Thirsty, That is a great story about Gary Player. I go to Bayhill in hopes to see Arnie. Payne Stewart was one of my favorites.
I need to push 58 to set up a golf tourney somewhere in Central Florida for us golfers.
Posted by: raizecane | September 26, 2016 at 12:11 PM
IDK why you think that opinion is a certainty, especially in football. Programs always look to hire a name. Also, if programs are already competing for conference titles, they may not be in the market for a coach. If guys like Muschamp, Petrino, Leach etc can get gigs at P5 schools, so can Miles. Depends on who needs a coach at seasons end.

Scar was demoted to non-serious P5 contender as soon as they hired Muschimp.
LOL @Leach and Wazzu. GTFOH. One of my best buds was a starter at LB for them and he'll even tell you they're not a serious P5.
Petrino is a philanderer, a disloyal SOB, and a sh*tty human being, but he's a serious coach.
Miles is no longer considered a serious coach.
No serious P5 will hire him. Guaranteed.
I've already provided a list of bottom rung teams that MAY have look at him. I may have missed one or two bottom dwellers, but I guarantee you that NO serious P5 will look at him, End of story. I'm sure of it.
Posted by: Lur-ker | September 26, 2016 at 12:30 PM
Les Miles is more Larry Coker than Mark Richt.
I agree with Lurker... no top program is taking him. What happened with Muschamp doesn't normally happen... that's why a lot of people was shocked that usc hired him.

The Canes open as a -6.5 point favorite at GT

Ain't I BOSS. huh Because, last Thursday or was it Wednesday, I said Miami would open as a... - 7 point road chalk.
Oh, and one more thing. The current point spread will INCREASE by game day. So I suggest you wager on Miami now. Naturally laying the - 6 1/2. Because I SEE-r another double-digit road victory!

The Ducks had trouble stopping legitimate offenses prior to Hoke. In other words, the Ducks game goal was to OUT SCORE opponents, and come away with the victory. huh
Oh. A SECOND STRING signal caller chit all over the Ducks in small town, rustic Eugene. LOL
Posted by: TheeMackJones | September 26, 2016 at 12:36 PM
Lurker, miss me with that "GTFOH" shit. If you wanna make a point thats fine, but dont talk to me like im some punk. Did I come at you that way?
Just because you guarantee it doesn't mean thats how it will be. Why would any serious P5 team that is already winning look at any coach not named Saban or Meyer? If a team is looking for a coach at the end of the season, its because they werent winning. No one is going to dumb a winning coach for Miles, but he will get a job and he will get interest.
