Head coach Jim Morris released the University of Miami’s 2017 baseball schedule Wednesday.
The Hurricanes, coming off their second straight College World Series trip and 25th in program history, feature 17 returners from a 2016 team that finished 50-14 overall and 21-7 in the ACC.
“It’s a very competitive schedule, just like last year’s,” Morris said. “It’s very tough, starting with the Atlantic Coast Conference and playing Florida out of the SEC, along with all the teams from South Florida. We’re playing just about everybody three or four times from down here. It’s another tough schedule.”
Three-time defending ACC Coastal Division champion Miami hosts 34 games inside the friendly confines of Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field, where the Hurricanes finished 34-6 in 2015.
Rutgers (Feb. 17-19) arrives for the first regular season series of the spring before the Hurricanes travel to Gainesville, Fla., for their annual rivalry series with the Gators (Feb. 24-26).
Miami will also play crosstown foe FIU four times in 2017, splitting the games home and away. A classic home-and-home will take place March 7-8, when the Hurricanes host the Panthers in the first game and make the short drive to FIU Baseball Stadium for the second.
“All the teams down here are very good,” Morris said. “I expect FIU to be better now under their current coach. They’re tough games.Sometimes a team down here will hold their top guy back or No. 2 starter for us….it challenges our team to play good every day against everybody, not just ACC games. I spend a lot of time talking to our team about the importance of playing on Wednesdays, not just Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.”
Miami also battles FAU and FGCU three times, as well as single showdowns with St. Thomas and UCF.
ACC series include home matchups with Georgia Tech (March 10-12), Wake Forest (March 31-April 2), Duke (April 7-8), Florida State (April 21-23) and Virginia Tech (May 18-20). Road series include trips to NC State (March 17-19), North Carolina (March 24-26), Pittsburgh (April 14-16), Boston College (April 28-30) and Virginia (May 12-14).
In 2016, Miami won the ACC Regular Season Championship for the second time in the past three seasons, was ranked the No. 1 team nationwide during the regular season and earned the No. 3 national seed for the NCAA postseason.
“Coming to Miami from Day 1 was a tremendous challenge, following Coach Ron Fraser and what had been done in the past,” Morris said. “Every year is a new year, for me, for our players and for our fans. The expectations are very, very high. We have to go out and prove that we’re good this year. Next year we’ll have to go out and prove that we’re good next year. Every year is a new year, and we want to compete, we want to go to Omaha, and we want to have a chance to win.”
Tracy Howard was a 5*

Ray Ray played outta position, should've been an OLB/SS.
Posted by: CaneRock | December 15, 2016 at 11:36 AM
Frank Beamer won a lot of games.....238-121 in 28 years a lot of conference titles...a lot of bowls....but never won the NC.....the NC is elite....winning a lot of games is nice....but it is second tier....Beamer gets mentioned as one of the all time winners.....won more than a lot of people....but is that elite without a NC...NO!
The elite teams of all time have one thing in common....NC!!! In the long run.....its the only thing that matters winning it all. I like CMR...he has things turning around....but 10 wins a year really means nothing to me.....he has no title so he can only be so good. We need to win a NC to mean anything in college football again!
right now.....little u....time to win before we can be THE U!!!!
I know i am biased; I do love these guys very much.
I look at it the only way I know how....as a coach for 37 years...you have to win titles to matter....JMO

AQM was a bigger bust than Ray Ray...never made an impact in a meaningful game.
Posted by: CaneRock | December 15, 2016 at 11:38 AM
AQM was 4 star. RayRay 5. RayRay bigger. Wasn't even good enough to get exotic rental cars paid for.

Our biggest bust ever was Brown, the kid from Kansas.
#1 overall recruit in the country.
Posted by: Go Canes! | December 15, 2016 at 11:44 AM
I disagree.... even thought he was #1 he was nowhere near the HS LB Willie was

Brown balled out for Kansas St!

I also think if AB wasnt in RS "dog house" he would of done well for us. He played great at K-State
Posted by: UMike | December 15, 2016 at 11:50 AM
Ray Ray was/is a starting LB in the NFL. He was misused at UM.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | December 15, 2016 at 11:57 AM
Posted by: BEERicane | December 15, 2016 at 11:50 AM
Which makes him an even bigger bust for us.

He's on an NFL roster and played in probably 40 games for us.

Tracy Howard is a back up FS for the Cleveland Browns. He gets playing time.
Posted by: Dude | December 15, 2016 at 12:17 PM
Dude I think you got that one correct. The whole search was flawed, we had already fallen to a new low under Clap and Onion, and we settled for AlPa and NoDPa. Now that is a big time bust. Thanks for getting it right!!!!!!

You did well my friend; straight up and simple. The hiring of AlPa and the Shapiro mess were nails in the coffin for us.
Winston is playing well for the Bucs; he is a good player.
This is a little different though; a settlement made. If I was innocent I would fight it, everybody is different. Thats the way it goes now.....people are not always held accountable.

VA,
Have you ever been to Appomattox?
Posted by: Dude | December 15, 2016 at 01:31 PM
One thing that everyone should keep in mind. Once the Shapiro mess started, with perhaps a few exceptions it really didn't matter who was coach. A three year, serious investigation with all of the negative recruiting that came from it was going to degrade the program regardless of the coach. We would have won more games with others at the helm, but no coach was going to restore Miami to 2001 glory between 2012 and 2014. Our fate was sealed for the next five years once Shapiro went public. And we're lucky the NCAA was so discredited, because I firmly believe that they intended to give us Penn State's penalty.

I think Go's point is that USF's recruiting won't impact UM. I don't think he's saying there will never be a UM target who, for whatever reason, decides to play at USF.
I agree with Go.

I saw Taggert on the recruiting trail a couple years ago when he started was at USF, and I even saw him once at Traz Powell, watching Miami Jackson play. Taggert is a real football guy. He really enjoyed watching the high school games, and he was 100% focused on what was going on in the game. He watched players closely, and you could tell that he had a discerning eye and kept things close to the vest. Taggert was definitely impressed by the number of players who were really talented, but not noticed. Taggert loves watching football, and he watches everything a recruit does. He learns a lot about recruits, and he has a good eye for talent and his system. Taggert also develops players.
Charlie Strong is a different kind of coach in many, many ways. Strong might like returning to Florida because of his relationship with the coaches. There is enough talent in the State to fill both rosters with good players.
I had a good feeling for the kind of talent evaluator Butch Davis was as a college football coach (he was perhaps the all-time best), but I am not sure if the time off has affected him. The State of Florida actually produced more talent now than it did when Butch was the Hurricanes Coach in the late 1990s, and Butch has acknowledged that. Butch focused a lot on the psychology of players, and he was excellent.
I know nothing about Kiffen as a recruiter, so I cannot comment on that. Recruits will want to play for him, but building a football program is tough business. A lot goes into being successful, and I don't know if Kiffen will have all of the support needed to be successful. I also don't know his attributes as a talent evaluator.
It will be interesting around here for the next few years.

I think the point is this: all these guys, UM included will go after guys, compete with each other. We have been down since 03 for me....nut we have come a long way from Clap, Onion, AlPa and Shap. Richt has improved a lot of thinngs, and the culture, attendance, and good feeling are on the rise. I think Go means if we continue to get good players, and some great ones, and we start winning the way we should or could...11-1 beat FSU ND play for division and conference, get to a playoff game....we should have a decided advantage over the smaller schools. We need to win on a big time scale....not lose on TV/in front of recruits....Can CMR win...yeas he can. Can he win the big games we have not won in a long time? We hope he can. Its up for thought!

Dude, responding to VA and his nail in the coffin comment. Not excusing Golden, who I said gained less wins than others would have. Just pointing out that if we had somehow hired Nick Saban or Jim Harbaugh in Dec 2010, we still were going to take a big hit.
Posted by: TonyCane | December 15, 2016 at 04:49 PM
VA, it's a little conservative. We have been down nationally for ten years. Miami was ranked #2 with two games left to go in the 2005 season.

How many "true canes" are out there you think? 3 per cycle? These kids have no reason to be canes fans unless their parents instilled it in them. These kids have no memory of Miami ever even winning a bowl game. The U means to these kids means about as much as SMU meant to us when we were kids.
If our coaching staff followed your advice, we would be at the same level of Football as Dade College.
Your mom asked that you stop posting stupidity on the internet.

The NCAA wanted to give us penn states penalty you say? No coach could've brought us to glory you say?
You do realize that penn state finished the regular season ranked #5 this year right? One spot out of the playoffs.
Not only are you not giving golden a pass for the coaching abomination he was, but you're also giving Richt a pass for the abomination he was for long stretches this season.
Golden had the talent to win the ACC during his tenure. If you don't believe me ask the NFL. Richt should've been preparing to play for a conference ship today. At worst.
Talent is not our problem and it never was. Yea I know the D had depth issues this year, which is why Richt can be excused for one of the losses this year. Just one.
