JHAVONTE DEAN UPDATES RECRUITMENT WITH CIS

Looks like the good folks at Tennessee may have been tipped...-jdean-jpg

With Miami looking for immediate help at cornerback, theyve turned their attention to the junior college ranks and have keyed in on a local product Jhavonte Dean, originally from South Dade High School. Dean updated CanesInSight on the latest with his recruitment.

Defensive coordinator Manny Diaz dropped in to Blinn College last week to see Dean, then safeties coach Ephraim Banda was in Texas yesterday getting to know him. Dean said that him and Banda broke down film together and they envisioned his role in the defense.

Another Canes coach is on deck to see Dean this week as well presumably cornerbacks coach Mike Rumph.

Theyve been hitting me up for like two or three weeks straight now, and they kind of topped it off with the visits to come see me and they said there will be another coach coming either this week or next week too, Dean said.

Although Dean is technically still committed to Alabama, he considers his recruitment open and added that Miami and Arizona State are in contact with him the most. South Carolina is another team to watch, although Dean said that they have only contacted his coaches, not him directly. He will visit Arizona State this upcoming weekend.

Coming out of high school, I wasnt really highly recruited like that so it never crossed my mind that I could play there (Miami). It was always my favorite team and hoped they would offer me, he said.

Something potentially on Miami's side are family ties, specifically his mom, drawing him close to home. Dean explained that it would not be the ultimate deciding factor, though.

Shes not trying to make me go to one school. Shes with me wherever I go, Dean said.

He did however, let her know that the hometown Hurricanes were a possibility.

When I first told her about the offer, she was excited because its she knew Miami has always been my favorite team since I was a little kid. It kinda meant something to her.

The nations number-one ranked junior college corner according to 247sports will visit Miami on January 13th weekend. Miami coaches told Dean that they want to have his mother along for the official visit as well serving as a chance for the them to strike up a relationship with her.

Miamis success defensively this season has caught his attention.

Ive watched a few of their games and you can tell their defense has improved. Coach Banda was showing me videos of the defensive backs tackling in practice and how it translates to the games. They've made a big improvement in the last year, Dean said.

With Corn Elder and Adrian Colbert moving on to the next level, Dean realizes the opportunity to see the field right away might not be guaranteed, but it is there for the taking.

Thats definitely a positive for me, he said.

As far as how Miami would utilize Dean if he chose the Canes, he said that Coach Banda told him he would play some nickel and be given the chance to move around on the defense. It certainly appears like Miami is a serious player here.

Interesting article from Porter at PBP:

Not only is Ahmmon Richards the most productive freshman receiver in Hurricanes history, he might be the fastest player on the team.

According to Miami’s most recent testing results — some of which were visible in a UM player’s social media post — Richards’ 4.31-second 40-yard dash tops all wide receivers, running backs and defensive backs. We are assuming no quarterback, tight end, lineman or kicker outraced Richards.

Another caveat to these numbers: we don’t know when the testing was done and who did or didn’t participate. UM sources did not immediately confirm the data.

Update: according to a source, Miami conducted the testing last summer, and did not post the results in its building until this week. That’s how the social media post happened.

So far, UM has kept its testing results private under Mark Richt. Former strength coach Andreu Swasey regularly released info (that’s how we learned of the feats of Jermaine Grace, Phillip Dorsett and Sam Shields), but his successor, Gus Felder, has not. Richt has commented positively about offseason fitness gains, but declined to say who ran what.

But Richt, who has said his receivers on the whole weren’t fast enough, had to be happy to see Richards and Braxton Berrios (4.33) check in at 1-2. Stacy Coley wasn’t among the top eight, though he has run in the 4.3s in the past. Speed at wide receiver is still a recruiting need for UM.

* A good sign for the future: running back Trayone Gray, coming off preseason ACL surgery, not only ran the seventh-best 40 (4.44, tied with Corn Elder), but he also had the second-best bench press max (380 pounds) and squat max (475). Of course, Gray hasn’t been out there taking a pounding all year, but it’s evidence he’s recovering well. Gray will be a redshirt junior next year.

* Senior safety Jamal Carter had the best bench (400), squat (515) and second-best power clean (330) among skill position players. Junior running back Joe Yearby, who plans to enter the NFL draft, had the third-best skill-position bench (350) and tied Gray for second-best skill-position squat (475). Redshirt junior running back Gus Edwards had the best power-clean (355) and had strong numbers in the bench (330) and squat (450).

* Other top skill-position 40s: cornerbacks Ryan Mayes (4.37), Michael Jackson (4.38), Malek Young (4.4) and Terrance Henley (4.41). Young earned a starting role late in his freshman season, passing Mayes, Jackson and Henley on the depth chart. Coaches have lauded his combination of speed, ball skills and confidence.

VA Cane

dammit....I want to see Choc get on the field....know he was hurt but the kid has skill....I pray they send Gus the MopedPa packing....he is a big lazy back who has shown me nothing.

We are close to breakout....the close games against FSU, UNC and ND prove that. Much of it was that boring, sluggish Jawja Dawg O CMR ran at UGA for 15 years...no wonder he never won big games. We get the OL lean and mean, stronger, eating real food instead of McDs (they are some fat boys with slow feet and minds), we get Brad moving thinking preparing to win even more, and CMR calls a dynamic game (not a game from the dark past when helmets had no facemasks....) we can win.

We need to keep getting kids in here who want to come and win; the young kids really showed that this year. We are closing in on the Top 20....without the 4 gauntlet loss (no excuses gameplan OL and QB had tough time), we are there.
I feel a good bowl game...CMR BK and OL step up....and the D as always kicks ass....we play well win, sign some good kids and are off to the races..

I wish I could come to the game...I planned on going to the UM bowl this year....I did not mention it, but I broke my ankle badly 11/03...its been tough. I had an external fixator for 2 weeks, then a hard plastic cast up until today. I go to Dr tomorrow....hope I can start walking....doubt it. I had saved $ for a train trip and thought someone might get me a ticket.....not working has really put a damper on that. I really want to see a good bowl game we are in.Its depressing for me now that footballs over. I live alone out in the country now; no help. I had me and my cat here for Tgiving. Christmas will be the same; just me at home with the TV and cat. I had a lot to look forward to while we had our title run; now its boring.

I will get to a game next year and want to meet all my family; we will be better, my leg will be better, and we will beat some ass....and have a great party before during and after. I am 58 and getting no younger; I want to see as many of you as I can!!!!

Thank you all for being wonderful people!!

VA Cane

I sure wish i could make the game....but i think we are going to win it!!!

VA Cane

Click on VA Cane; it will give you a better idea of what a exterior fixator is. It just came off; it is titanium and steel....heavy as hell....like carrying Gus the Moped on your leg! LOL!

My doctor did not want me coaching or being out on the field; I told him you know what!!! I refused to let my kids down. Doing appraisals is different; you have to move a lot. I am doing one Sat despite the cast.

I am so disappointed that I just do not have the $ to come to the bowl; I really wanted to come. By game time I think my cast will be off; just do not have the $.

We awill win!!! Go Canes!!!

Ariz:

The Work 12-6

**Miami’s pursuit of another defensive lineman is tricky. Coach Kuligowski has gone to see multiple 4-star prospects across the country over the last week and a half, including USC commit Hunter Echols, Louisiana product Phidarian Mathis, and Elijah Conliffe out of Hampton, Virginia.

Although Miami would ideally like to add another defensive lineman in the class, early playing time for these targets might be difficult considering what Miami is returning in the front-4. After next season though, the window of opportunity will be wide-open because the Canes could lose all five defensive tackles. Echols, Mathis, and Conliffe are expected to take official visits to Miami, but Echols and Mathis are highly unlikely at this point, according to sources. Echols is strong in his commitment to the Trojans and Mathis is likely headed to Bama or LSU.

I do however, expect Miami to become a serious threat for Conliffe. He has been one of Coach Kuligowski’s favorites – Kool has seen him play twice this year, the first time being when Miami traveled to Charlottesville for their game against Virginia. A source said that Miami is making him a bigger priority than the other schools on him at the moment, which could play a role in his decision. Miami in January is the only visit that Conliffe has set right now. He went to see Penn State in early November as well.

**C.J. Henderson to UF continues to look imminent, and I’m hearing he could be making that announcement within the next couple of weeks. Alabama has made a recent run, with Mario Cristobal spearheading his recruitment, but the Gators look to have won the battle. Henderson hasn’t told Miami it’s over, but people close to Henderson say that his decision has essentially been made.

**On the flip side, I have Miami as the favorites to land JUCO CB Jhavonte Dean. In my update with him last night, it is evident that the staff is trying to show him how much they need him. I posted a few weeks back that they would be locking in on a JUCO target at this spot – without a doubt, Dean is that guy. I’m told that Miami is really selling the opportunity to play in front of his family, particularly his mother. He will visit Arizona State this week, which I’ve heard is not a serious threat here. Dean’s only other official visit set now is to Miami on January 13th, when the staff plans to pull out all the stops for his mother too.

**Not much new on Brian Edwards, who will visit Miami the final weekend of January. I still expect him to sign with the Hurricanes, but a source close to his recruitment said “a few more schools are circling the wagons” and that Colorado is a real dark horse here. Colorado is selling Edwards on being “the type of recruit the program has never had”.

UF coach Randy Shannon visited him at school yesterday, but I’m told he still doesn’t have an offer from them. The source added that Edwards’ offer could depend on whether or not the Gators hold on to Elijah Blades from Pasadena – USC might make a run late and pry him away from UF. Even then if the Gators offer him, Miami has had him as a priority and Edwards senses that UF has been slow playing him.

Edwards has four total visits set – Colorado this weekend, Louisville on January 14th, Syracuse on January 20th, and Miami the 27th.

**I posted this in the recruiting chat yesterday, but I will expand a bit about what Miami is doing at the receiver spot.

Evidence Njoku will be in the class despite Tennessee and Larry Scott making a run at him. Miami was not sure the caliber of player they were getting when he committed, but a source said the Canes coaches are really excited about what they’ve seen from Njoku this season – and by the way, he is up to 6’6”. Here are clips from his first two playoff games this season. Miami WR coach Ron Dugans was in New Jersey on Sunday night watching his Wayne Hills team advance to the championship.

There is still a lot of confidence that they will flip Mike Harley from West Virginia.

They will land a JUCO prospect – and no I don’t have names yet, but if the way they’ve worked quickly on Jhavonte Dean is any indication, then we could see something develop very quickly there. Remember, this is the time of year when coaches are looking at JUCO prospects’ transcripts, which is always a possible hold up.

The staff has been confident on Devonta Smith for months, but it's just tough to see that one holding up. He was not a priority for Les Miles’ staff at LSU, but that has now changed under Ed Orgeron.

They will round out the receivers class with one of Smith, Jerry Jeudy (unlikely but still possible), and a name we haven't heard yet.

Canes fans are worried and I understand why, but it does not make ANY sense to me that this staff would just be sitting around waiting and not offering other possible options. Miami sources have told me for months that they’ve been on commits to other schools for a while and they’ve kept it under wraps until recently.
For example, look at Jhavonte Dean (Alabama), Echols (USC), Cyrus Fagan (FSU), and even recently Corey Gaynor, who flipped from Minnesota. It is highly possible that the same can be said about the receiver position.

It's similar to what's happening at offensive line with the Heritage kids (Kai-Leon Herbert and Tedarrell Slaton) and part of my reasoning for being so confident on them along with other things I've heard. We know Miami needs offensive linemen more than anything, but if Miami coaches felt like they were in big trouble, we would see them scrambling and sending out offers left and right or even making a stronger push for Kadeem Telfort. The same logic applies at wide receiver, where they seem to be holding firm on the same names that have been on the radar.

**For the second time in the span of a week, Miami offensive coordinator/running backs coach Thomas Brown was in Maryland to visit top running back target Anthony McFarland. It was great timing by Brown because McFarland was fresh off his visit to hometown Maryland. Sources tell CanesInSight that Miami is poised to land his commitment at the Under Armour All-American game.

Go Canes!

Don't know how I feel about that Ariz report.

CaneRock

Colorado seems to be a program on the rise, MacIntyre's turned that thing around. But I think He'll take the Baylor gig. He's a 305er BTW, His pops was a scout for UM BITD.

CaneRock

McFarland would be a big commitment, haven't landed 2 good to elite RBs in the same class in a minute.

CaneRock

Evidence might end up being better than older Bro.

Go Canes!

Kid looks to have an incredible wingspan and better hands than his brother CR.

Really interesting prospect.

Evidence is a very different player than David, but I agree, he could be a great one. Hard to imagine him being a TE. McFarland WILL be a Cane. Lock it up.

Meaningless ranking of the day. Stewart has the Russell Athletic Bowl as the 9th best of the bowl season right behind the Sugar at #8. A win here would be yuuuuuge right before recruiting season begins!

Was looking at some of the bowl matchups, man there are some DOG games out there.

Our game should be entertaining, though imo there's not going to be the kind of scoring some are predicting.

VA - good luck in your recovery. Once the external fixator is off do you need additional surgery?
Also, you need to come down and see the new stadium - it is bad a$$. And covered :)

I think we still need so many elite recruits still... If Richt can pull it off then hats off to him. A win over WV would probably go a long way.

To me, the UNC and ND games were games we should have won, had we opened the play book a little more, especially UNC. I will never forget the first drive of 8 straight running plays ;(

can someone tell me why parking is so damn expensive for the bowl game and where one might go to get a parking space that isn't as expensive as the game ticket itself??

If you all think we should be 10-2 with wins over ND and UNC then I'll "one-up" ya to 11-1 cause we should've beaten FSU as well.

Evidence says he has an 89 inch wingspan. Same as Dwight Howard.

I can see this being 6'7 230, a RZ nightmare. He has grown 2 inches in the past year and is probably not done yet. A college weight program is going to help him a lot.

Native I might have kicked the dog, cat, rat, and hog those 4 weeks so I had a multiple injury.

CGNCPa, had the fixator on for about 2.5 weeks, then they took it off, put titanium plate and screws in, and now the leg/ankle is wrapped in gauze to cover stitching, then a strap like cast, with hard plastic on the sides and around ankle/leg...plastic up the sides and small open area covered with 2 ace bandages. The bottom is plastic but not flat like a shoe; it is angled ...I think to keep hardhead VACPa from trying to take a step. I think I can, but have not can rest on it.

I took an appraisal today and have another one Friday; No work in a month....but bills still come...I will be back I think...plan on in 2 weeks. Got to.

I think EN will be incredible.....can you imagine Richards and the Njoku brothers on the field tryoing to cover them? Nightmare matchups.

Spoke to my brothers; Skipper is worse than me as a football fanatic....he is 63 thinks he could play. Great HS player and played at VT early 70's.Both say we have a shot...Bama supposedly is close. He plays for Hampton Crabbers one of the great HS teams in VA and have been for long time.

Big strong fast....needs learn to use hands better, little more mean....and play little lower. I think Manny and Kool would really develop him into a fantastic player. They are fundamental guys. He is my Christmas wish....I wont have Christmas this year being laid up....but give me this guy Santa!!!!!
