The University of Miami women’s tennis team checks in at No. 12 in the nation in the pre-spring ITA rankings to begin 2017.
In addition, the Hurricanes have a trio of players in the top 70, headlined by junior Sinead Lohan placing sixth, and one doubles pair in the top 50.
"I think this is a fair start for our team. This year is about taking the next step–we have the talent." Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. "My vibe on this team is that they are going to die for their friends. They are more than teammates this year which is going to have a huge impact."
Miami, one of five ACC teams in the top 25, is ranked in the top 12 to start the spring for the seventh time in the last eight years.
The Hurricanes are coming off a 21-6 (12-2 ACC) showing in 2015-16, reaching the Sweet 16 for the 11th consecutive season and finishing in the top 15 for the 13th consecutive season. Miami ended the campaign ranked No. 10, its eighth top-10 finish in the past 11 years.
Individually, Sinead Lohan, at sixth nationally, is the second-highest ranked player in the ACC and the second-highest ranked junior in the country. Lohan, who went 11-3 in the fall with six wins over top-45 opponents, is ranked in the top 10 for the 13th straight time, a streak that dates back to the opening 2016 rankings. She was fifth in the nation this past fall.
Along with Lohan, redshirt senior Maci Epstein is ranked No. 69 in singles and freshman Estela Perez-Somarriba is ranked No. 70. Of the players who are now ranked but were not in the fall, they are among the top 20 on the list.
For Epstein, who went 10-6 in the fall and reached the semifinals at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships, the No. 69 mark is the best of her collegiate career. Her prior top mark came in 2015 when she reached No. 102 nationally.
Just three Canespacers support UM women's tennis in any real way.
Yet only 11 freshmen in the country are ranked higher than Perez-Somarriba, including just four in the ACC. The Madrid native posted a 7-3 mark in the fall to begin her career at Miami.
The Hurricanes are one of 12 teams, including one of three in the ACC, with at least three ranked singles players. There are just nine teams, with two hailing from the ACC, that have at least three singles players in the top 70.

Let me just say that one of the BEST trips we ever took to the UM campus was when we went to a UM baseball game at night and a women's tennis match the next day.
It was too good to be true that we sat with the women's tennis team members at the baseball game and then saw them the next day at their tennis match.
Most men's football or basketball or baseball fans would never go to a women's tennis match. Well we did. They knew who we were and we respected them for their athletic talent. It was all good.

Just Keep TSully away from all our gals during competition so they can focus on the task at hand!! He loves his girls....and our girls love him as well! TSully...ladykiller....the 007 of Miami Beach!!!
Thanks for the great coverage!!
Clemson came to win; Bama thought it was a win....but their attack on O beat them...no passing game. D played 100 plays...wore out and could not compete in the end!!! My boy Clelin F #99 hurt his ankle bad..left same as my broken one....but he did a good job while he played!!
So many of these guys are not ready for the NFL. The agents whisper sweet nothings in their ear...you get hurt you lose money, you need to go now for the money.....Watson is the only good QB in this draft.....the rest...well looking at them in the league....suck...they are not ready. so many of these kids are not ready....stay for 4 get your degree and then play...if you can!!!
Watson is far superior to these other QBs......Brad could not do what he did...with Clemson...or Miamis great teams. He is average...not more. I wish all these kids good luck....and death to these agents....rip off money grabbing misleading assholes...God will burn their azz!!!!!!
I hate seeing guys not ready to play go.....its these fucked up agents. BK has to know he is not ready...VT, NC QBs....they are in over their heads!!!
and I still say Allison duck, turns, avoids contact....he will not stand in there and throw it...gun shy....that does not work!

Yesterday I was on YouTube looking for that PI call on Coley and I came across a South Florida Express try-out video that had Tracey Howard, Duke, D. Bush and Coley on it. It got me thinking about all the talent that was wasted at UM over the last decade. Imagine if Diaz was here from the 2008 class on. On paper the 2008 and 2009 classes should of put us back to elite status and may have if the majority of the talent wasnt wasted. Imagine we have Jedd Fisch and Manny Diaz for the entire time the 2008 & 2009 classes were hear.
Imagine Sean Spence, A. Brown and R. Buchannon at the LB spots under Diaz. Forston, M. Robinson, M Regis, D. Dye, C. Porter, Vernon etc on the D-Line, then back them up with B. Harris, Ray Ray, Telemaque etc... That group IMO would of blossomed under Diaz
With Fisch and J. Harris, Benjamin, Miller etc etc etc

It's more than just that. Until two years ago, Miami was not committed to doing the off the field things necessary to compete at a high level. No nutrition program until 2011, leaving some players on a diet of MCDonalds. 1980s Era facilities (Shannon observed that the Hecht Center still had the same furniture as when he was a player). Smaller assistant coaching staff. And going back to nutrition, not fully funded until 2015 (Golden tried to get it implemented in 2011). The school did not get serious about its commitment to winning until two years ago.

Wonder if they go back after Jeudy after that abysmal WR game Bama had.
Posted by: Go Canes! | January 11, 2017 at 09:46 AM
Jeudy is gone, IMO. Won't waste their time.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 11, 2017 at 09:51 AM
I thought Jeudy was an EE, didnt he have to like a couple weeks ago to decided or something like that?
That has been Miami the last decade. Bama offeres a kid in 8th/9th grade and follows him and builds that relationship and in the end they get a 5-Star kid, MIami offers a kid in 8th grade, builds a relationship, has him on campus numerous times...and the kid goes to UGA lol

Go Canes...Hurts has 15 games under His belt, while our QB corp has 1 1/2 games between em'.
Posted by: CaneRock | January 11, 2017 at 10:37 AM
Very true CR but this entire season would give me no hope that a passing game was in the future at Alabama.
Hurts' numbers passing were absolutely atrocious and you really didn't show flashes that he was going to turn into a consistent throwing QB in any game I saw.
And it's not like they can turn to someone else. Every other quarterback on the roster transferred this year.
Posted by: Go Canes! | January 11, 2017 at 10:58 AM
I should clarify that I mean downfield passing.
As the competition got tougher their wide receivers completely disappeared .

Lots of crystal balls coming in for WR Jeff Thomas to The U! Kid is EXACTLY what we need in terms of speed and shiftiness. Might be the fastest player in the country. Immediate help in slot/KR/PR. LET'S GOOOO

^^^ Beat me to it Sinister.
OL Donaldson, RB Burns, DE Garvin, LB Steed, LB Jennings are all going to be ready to contribute next fall. I left off Dallas because I dont think anyone really knows what he is yet. I hope the work him at FS and get Ed Reed down to talk with him and work with him.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | January 11, 2017 at 01:33 PM
Listening to our crybaby on cane insight about Wilder taking a visit to Oregon. He committed to us because Auburn didn't offer. Let him go.
Posted by: Coolmac758 | January 11, 2017 at 01:49 PM
Miami crossed off his list, has narrowed his list to UF and UGA; only teams that offered to play D.

Him and the coaching staff know. I posted before that it's a secret because there's supposedly a couple silent commits at either DB or WR that haven't announced and him telling his position he'll play would give away which spot has silent commit(s)
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 11, 2017 at 02:06 PM
^^^ Why wouldnt Miami offer him to play D also? Seems dumb.

Cmon GC. Give the guy a break. He had to deal with two OCs in one season.
Posted by: BEERicane | January 11, 2017 at 07:16 PM
Jalen Hurts was is not a good passer, and so was the offensive game plan. Hurts not only was inaccurate on his throws, but he consistently made poor reads on the RPO. Fortunately for Alabama, Hurts made some good runs and didn't turn the ball over or that championship game would have been a blowout. Hurts has the offseason to develop his passing skills, but I am not sure how much better he can become.
I don't see how Ridley can feel he is developing and showcasing his talent and skills in this Alabama offense, and I don't see how recruits can find this offense appealing. Ridley was not very productive at the end of the season, and it wasn't his fault

Eleven early enrollees are very impressive. That has to be a record. Leads me to believe that CMR plans to sign a big 2017 class, maybe 25+ because I think many EEs can count towards last year's signing class.
