The University of Miami women’s tennis team checks in at No. 12 in the nation in the pre-spring ITA rankings to begin 2017.
In addition, the Hurricanes have a trio of players in the top 70, headlined by junior Sinead Lohan placing sixth, and one doubles pair in the top 50.
"I think this is a fair start for our team. This year is about taking the next step–we have the talent." Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. "My vibe on this team is that they are going to die for their friends. They are more than teammates this year which is going to have a huge impact."
Miami, one of five ACC teams in the top 25, is ranked in the top 12 to start the spring for the seventh time in the last eight years.
The Hurricanes are coming off a 21-6 (12-2 ACC) showing in 2015-16, reaching the Sweet 16 for the 11th consecutive season and finishing in the top 15 for the 13th consecutive season. Miami ended the campaign ranked No. 10, its eighth top-10 finish in the past 11 years.
Individually, Sinead Lohan, at sixth nationally, is the second-highest ranked player in the ACC and the second-highest ranked junior in the country. Lohan, who went 11-3 in the fall with six wins over top-45 opponents, is ranked in the top 10 for the 13th straight time, a streak that dates back to the opening 2016 rankings. She was fifth in the nation this past fall.
Along with Lohan, redshirt senior Maci Epstein is ranked No. 69 in singles and freshman Estela Perez-Somarriba is ranked No. 70. Of the players who are now ranked but were not in the fall, they are among the top 20 on the list.
For Epstein, who went 10-6 in the fall and reached the semifinals at the ITA Southeast Regional Championships, the No. 69 mark is the best of her collegiate career. Her prior top mark came in 2015 when she reached No. 102 nationally.
Just three Canespacers support UM women's tennis in any real way.
Yet only 11 freshmen in the country are ranked higher than Perez-Somarriba, including just four in the ACC. The Madrid native posted a 7-3 mark in the fall to begin her career at Miami.
The Hurricanes are one of 12 teams, including one of three in the ACC, with at least three ranked singles players. There are just nine teams, with two hailing from the ACC, that have at least three singles players in the top 70.

Notre Dame tomorrow night at the U. Should be an awesome game.

Eleven early enrollees are very impressive. That has to be a record. Leads me to believe that CMR plans to sign a big 2017 class, maybe 25+ because I think many EEs can count towards last year's signing class.
Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | January 11, 2017 at 08:00 PM
It certainly gives him a tremendous amount of flexibility.
Question - when a player is kicked off the team, does his scholarship still count towards the 85 person limit that year?

I am hearing that at least 5 Current Canes will be departing very soon. I expect their will be probably 20-25 guys signed on February 1St that excludes the 11 early enrolles that counts towards this past year. So we shall have about 36 New players.

According to Canesport.com, Robert Burns’ planned early enrollment is now in question. He’s the only UM running back in this class, but UM remains optimistic about landing Maryland four-star back Anthony McFarland.
Regarding Burns, Canesport’s Matt Shodell said: “Burn is... held up and may be the biggest one for UM to hold its breath on - a source told CaneSport he's hoping to be cleared to report on the 21st, which is cutting it close to the final day to enroll (Jan. 25).”
• For all of the offseason moves that could be second-guessed in retrospect (Keith Yandle hasn’t lived up to expectations), at least the Panthers ended up with a bargain in Jonathan Marchessault, whose 12 goals are tied with Vincent Trochek for the team lead despite missing seven games.

The Purge 2017
Choc, Gus, Courtell, Ryan Mayes, Terrance and Henley
Posted by: SinisterCane | January 12, 2017 at 08:06 AM
Why would we want to get rid of those players?
Posted by: Go Canes! | January 12, 2017 at 08:23 AM

Maybe if Gus transfers, otherwise IDK. With Yearby gone, Gus might stay now. Maybe try him at FB and use like we did Quad Hill, would be a nice pass catching weapon out of the backfield.

Not at all, these players have done 2 things since their time at Miami Jack & Sh1t. What's truly ridiculous is your constant winning streak being on the wrong side of Hurricanes outcomes. I wouldn't be surprised 1 bit if you had a Detroit Lion ball cap

Donaldson and Steed are EE's and will be in class soon. Big for Donaldson to get Spring ball.

Anyone have the list of EE's?
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | January 12, 2017 at 10:19 AM
Confirmed EEs on campus
Orientation is tomorrow, classes start Tuesday, and the final day to enroll is January 25th. I will update this thread as new information arrives.
Currently on campus as of 8:20 Wednesday night:
Deejay Dallas
Amari Carter
Zach Dykstra
Jonathan Garvin
Cade Weldon
Expected in before the 25th
Navaughn Donaldson
Waynmon Steed
Brian Polendey
Robert Burns
Bradley Jennings, Jr.
NEW: A source just told CanesInSight that Zalon'tae Hillery will not be enrolling early at Miami. He does not enough enough credits right now to start school in January. Look for him to arrive in May.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | January 12, 2017 at 10:20 AM

Rumph should of landed Slaton & Herbert. Especially since they have a chance to come in and play right away.

Posted by: SinisterCane | January 12, 2017 at 10:10 AM
No the difference is YOU want to decide who's a "Golden" player.
Njoku, Corn, Walton, Coley, Isidora Thomas, Norton just to name a few were ALL recruits under the prior staff but I' ll guarantee you wanted them all here this year didn't you?
You cherry pick individual players to rip never remembering they're still Canes.
If they aren't good enough and transfer then so be it. But you calling them shit, garbage or whatever other personal insult you choose for that day proves yet again YOU'RE no Canes fan, not me.

Rumph has 1 more yrs. to prove the fans wrong about his recruiting abilities at AH or CANEZ fans won't take NO for an answer requesting his termination

Mofo please how many time have torn down the offense or its players/coached to defend Nofense????????
Posted by: SinisterCane | January 12, 2017 at 11:53 AM
Whatever I said or didn't say about anything having to do with this team, I can guarantee you I've never called an individual player a piece of shit or something that needed to be purged from our program.
How can you not get it this point? When they put on that jersey or coaching this team I ride or die. And as long as a kid is getting grades and busting his ass to be the best he can be, I've got his back because chances are we were all happy as hell when most of them signed.
You on the other hand pick and choose which players are worthy of you rooting for.
This entire season you've been all about Allison and Rosier. I wonder how long after one of them throw their first pick they become Golden trash.

Thomas Brown visits top RB McFarland today
With the recruiting contact period back open, Miami Hurricanes offensive coordinator and running backs coach Thomas Brown was in Maryland today stopping in on top target Anthony McFarland.
McFarland is set to announce his decision on January 25th and Mark Richt still has an in-home visit with the running back available. The only other program in the picture right now is the hometown Maryland, who just hired his high school coach Elijah Brooks on staff.
Miami has been very confident in their chances in landing the Dematha Catholic HS product and sources tell CanesInSight that Miami remains the team to beat. Maryland's hiring of Brooks was long-anticipated and is something that McFarland has been aware of for a while -- so it does not appear that will affect his decision.
