Davon Reed scored 18 points, Bruce Brown added 17 and Ja'Quan Newton chipped in 14 as Miami blew out reeling Pittsburgh 72-46 on Saturday.
The Hurricanes (12-4, 2-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) snapped a two-game losing streak by smothering the Panthers. The Hurricanes outrebounded Pitt 37-23 and held Pitt (12-6, 1-4) to just 34 percent shooting (18 of 53).
Jamel Artis led Pitt with 15 points a game after going for a career-high 43 in a loss to Louisville on Wednesday. Chris Jones scored 10 points for the Panthers, who have dropped three straight.
Pitt played without forward Ryan Luther, who sat out with an injured right foot. Senior forward Michael Young played with a mask on his face to protect his right eye. Young missed all 10 of his field goal attempts, his two points coming on a pair of free throws early in the second half.
Miami used a 14-0 run spanning the end of the first half and the beginning of the second to turn a competitive game into a blowout. The Panthers went 9:37 between field goals as Miami's advantage ballooned from 29-27 to 46-31.
The Hurricanes never came close to giving it up. After some early issues taking care of the ball, Miami effectively picked the Panthers apart defensively. The Hurricanes outscored Pitt 34-20 in the paint and converted Panther turnovers into 19 points at the other end of the floor.
With the win over Pittsburgh, Coach L earned his 600th career victory, posting a 600-395 mark in 33 seasons as a head coach. With 600 wins, he is one of five ACC coaches with 600 victories, and the other four men are in the Basketball Hall of Fame. Coach L has won 27 games at American International, 170 at Bowling Green, 273 at George Mason and 130 at Miami.

There museum in Sarasota is one othe coolest places in Florida to visit. So much history there and the old family mansion on the water there looks like something out of the great gatsby. First class place and I recommend if your ever in Sarasota to visit it.

My wife just went to see the circus with week with my step son. Said it had been completely reworked and was awesome.
Damn shame.

How well did it draw Go? Last time that I went in Austin the Irwin Center was around 60% full. Moderately more than what the Globetrotters or WWE have drawn here. I wonder what their break even point on attendance was.
Posted by: TonyCane | January 15, 2017 at 09:34 AM
It was a school field trip so it was full of kids.
If i had to guess, I'd say it probably went under due to the carrying costs of the lawsuit they fought and lost for years trying to keep elephants in the show.

Fran, best wishes to you and Jeanne

Go, I believe the circus won their lawsuit but decided to remove the elephants from the show. Like the article said, ids are more fascinated with youtube celebrities these days.
Posted by: CGNC | January 15, 2017 at 10:25 AM
Yes, I was reading about the lawsuits this morning. I wasn't aware that there had been so many suits filed against them. And other factors, such as NY refusing to allow them to perform if they had exotic animals.
I'm not a huge circus fan (my wife is - she likes clowns while I find them mildly disturbing), but I remember going to Ringling Brothers as a child at the Miami Convention Center. It was fun, and I took my children to see the show three times over the last 15 years in Austin. Its sad when an act with such a long and storied tradition can be done away with due to changing tastes and outside issues.
It kind of reaffirms my belief that college football could eventually fall. Today's concerns for elephant well being (and rightly so - very intelligent animals) could be tomorrow's concern for the hundreds of thousands of former college football players who sustained untreated concussions and file lawsuits against their schools, and students having to sustain a financial arms race for salaries and opulent facilities for players on their backs through escalating tuition costs and student fees.

Defense wins championships?
2009-12: Alabama went 4-0 in season finales, gave up 10.5 ppg in those games. Last 4 yrs: 1-3, gave up 40.5 ppg.

The Work 1-15
Miami hosted its first official visit weekend of the new year beginning Friday and continuing through Sunday morning.
The visitors were as expected: WR Evidence Njoku, WR Jordan Pouncey, DL D.J. Johnson, CB Trajan Bandy, CB Jhavonte Dean, and WR Mike Harley.
None of these were a surprise to Canes coaches, including Harley, who Miami had expected to go through with his visit plans even when he publicly said a few weeks ago that he was "shutting down" his recruitment.

Defense also loses Championships. Imagine if our D didn't show up against BC & VT in 01'.
Posted by: CaneRock | January 15, 2017 at 01:48 PM
And of course a great D is gonna give up points against an offensive juggernaut, so 2 or 3 stops in those games is crucial.
Defense always has to be on.

2015..."Alabama and Clemson entered the CFP Playoff as the top two defenses in the FBS, according to ESPN's defensive efficiency ratings. The Tide won the championship and finished the year as the third-most efficient defense in the last 10 seasons."

Anyone know whats up with Holmes? Probably a silent to keep the HS kids in it?
I hope we can walk away with Thomas, Harley, Pouncey, Njoku (TE), and Holmes. Thomas is the jewel of the class and probably the toughest to get. That would be an elite haul and I think we have a damn good shoult at pulling it off.

I think Holmes is out and Njoku will play WR not TE.
We're supposed to be loading up on WR's in 2018 so no need to take too many this year

Ariz: CanesInSight has learned that Miami safeties coach Ephraim Banda met with Shawn Davis all of Friday afternoon at Southridge.
Davis is a UF commit who was supposed to enroll last week, but was not able to qualify early. He reached out to Banda this week. Sources tell CanesInSight that Davis' family and DB coach believes that UF has handled the situation poorly, opening the door for the Canes. Davis is likely to take an official to Miami with his family over the next two weeks.
One more important note -- I'm told that Banda has met with the Southridge principle about Davis' situation, as well as his aunt, who is a UM grad.

Shawn Davis could be a solid pick up.

Go Canes... if he takes that OV with his fam it will be O-V lol... which would be a HUGE GET!!!
TD...the coaches don't think he will

Njok2 could be a Winslow or Graham type TE where he's a nightmare outside.

I think theyre wrong. Kid should get to about 235. If I had to guess Id say hes pushing 220 now.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | January 15, 2017 at 03:53 PM
Pouncey I think is a lock.
Between Harley,Smith, & Thomas, I think 2 outta 3 will sign.
If Richt learned anything from Bowden, it's how to close, and I think He'll close strong this year.
Posted by: CaneRock | January 15, 2017 at 04:06 PM
Sorry The Dude...
Evidence is skinny. Between 190-200 lbs at 6'6 (they usually give players a inch or 2). It's been stated several times he has a slimmer frame then David. David came in at 220 and reached 250 (maybe). Evidence looks to fill out at 220-225. Evidence is a Tommy Streeter type WR...
Posted by: CoCane | January 15, 2017 at 04:22 PM
He needs to close strong because most of what's left are 50/50 players. Njoku's bro will be a wr from what I've read. Supposedly has a different body type.

You see what the Packers are doing with WR #88 Ty Montgomery at RB? That is EXACTLY what a smart coach would have done with Devin Hester. What a waste of talent.
