UM head coach Mark Richt concluded his first full year of recruiting with a very successful class of new talented players that are signed, sealed and delivered to "The U".
Every year on NSD there are some hits and misses and this recruiting cycle was no different. Miami scored well on the recruiting trail except at DB and RB. The Hurricanes did best by shoring up their OL with several excellent propects.

Would you rather have a top 5 recruiting class or a top 15 recruiting class (and why)?
Posted by: nemo2002 | February 02, 2017 at 03:20 PM
You don't get it!
Nobody's goal is to try to finish 15th instead of 5th...but if you like the class you got and fulfilled your needs with the players you wanted...why be mad about finishing 15th? Take Jerry Jeudy and Jeff Thomas...ranked #1 and #8 respectively...Give me Jeff Thomas all day and twice on Saturday!
Bama's class might not work at UM and vice versa! Does this class fit us? YES! I don't care what the rank is!

It's a dang good glass. No two ways about it and a guy like Thomas should have been a five star and a guy like Garvin should have been a high four star. But that's rankings, sometimes there more accurate then others. I think we were only two players away from an elite class in McFarland and Henderson. And one of those guys away from being a top ten class as we were only two points away from number ten. But hey we finished at number 12 per ESPN and we can make those two misses right next year by getting the DBs we're expected to get and getting lingard who from a few people I know that have talked to him loves the Canes. Either way we filled our needs with top/elite talent which a lot of them will be playing on Sundays in the future.

Here is a simple question for the "star naysayers" (and anyone else who wants to render an informed opinion):
Would you rather have a top 5 recruiting class or a top 15 recruiting class (and why)?
Posted by: nemo2002 | February 02, 2017 at 03:20 PM
Stars matter. A lot. But here's an answer to a slightly different question .
I'd rather have elite coaching with #15 class, then Shitty coaching with #5 class.

From CIS poster:
"You want another back story you can call me whatever over & critique I'll give you two that you can verify however you feel. Your own sources or Pete or whomever can find out the same if they research it. #1, the reason Henderson didn't come here is because of last weekend. The long story starts at the all star game in Orlando. Henderson found out he wasn't starting, & took his pads off & walked off. Refused to be a back up. When Rumph & Diaz found out about it, Rumph called Him up & snapped on Him. Told Him that's not what Canes do. We don't need kids like that. Henderson as a result got in his feelings & didn't show up Sunday night like he was supposed to. Because of that, & him doing what he did at the all star game, we stopped all communication with him. Since then Bandy has tried to play peacemaker between the staff & Him, but the staff had no interest.
#2, Rumph found out as of late Monday night Jhavonte Dean was a silent to us & to ASU. He seemed to be leaning in that direction. A big part in His recruitment here was Adrian Colbert. So we had Adrian call & Dean admitted he was a silent to both of us & didn't know what to do. Adrian had a friend & teammate from Texas who transferred to ASU so he put them in touch. After speaking to buddy from ASU he told them how ASU treated there players like **** & lied about most things from when he was being recruited. After that call, He told ASU he was gonna be a Cane. That was Tuesday afternoon before he decided. Devonta I still don't know 100% what happened. All I know is Monday at around 2am I got a call from a particular coach saying this mother ****er. On top of that he told us he'd be going to lsu. Feel free to blame me for that, but He's been a silent to us since Paradise...& I can show that on a screen shot supported by a pic of all of us at Prime 112 from back in July when we were celebrating him & another kid who didn't end up coming. Fml"

I didn't care about rankings last season when the Canes 2016 recruiting class was ranked around #20, and I don't care if the Canes 2017 class is ranked #12. These are some good players and they are future stars.
This coaching staff will develop a few more freshmen stars and future NFL players from this class. The quality of players in the 2017 class is as good as last year's recruiting class, but there are more players. At least three recruits will compete for starting roles and many will see the field

Look at how star gazing blinds the mind.
"The Bottom" produces so much talent, there are quite a few 3* that are really 4 and 5* players. If Richt and his staff have a keen eye for talent, the rankings won't matter. Our 3* will shine on those 5* that everyone slobbers over. Just chill...

So Multiple Gang Rapes, Guns to Women Heads, yeah it's child's play SMH.

Exactly TD, nothing's worse than what happened at crappy valley.
Posted by: CaneRock | February 03, 2017 at 10:42 AM
Penn State was of course worse. But the difference with Penn State is it happened decades ago and there was a lot of he said she said.
This is happening right now, in the 21st Century. And they have this coach, administration and police department blatantly covering up rape, drug dealing, assault and solicitation.
It's disgraceful.
Posted by: Go Canes! | February 03, 2017 at 10:43 AM
That fuqboy ain't in prison over no "he said she said", he did everything he was accused of. And the difference isn't how long ago it happened, it's it happened to kids that couldn't defend themselves, and were afraid to report it to the proper authorities...unlike Baylor.
Posted by: CaneRock | February 03, 2017 at 10:50 AM
So I guess it's cool to hang rape women, put guns to their heads etc. Both situations are beyond awful and needs to be dealt with.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | February 03, 2017 at 10:53 AM
Omg...
Those schools have mostly 3-1*. When did I say recruit like them? I said:
4* and 5* combined with UNDERRATED 3*...
Pinckney 3*
Young 3*
Redwine 3*
Njoku 3* (1st round pick)
Herndon 3*
Isadora 2* (nfl player)
Odogwu 3* (nfl player when healthy)
R. Jenkins 3* (nfl player)
McIntosh 3*
That is just this years team. The right 3* mixed with 4 and 5* will kill sh*t. Talent evaluation is more important then stars.
A lot of 3* south florida guys leave the state and ball. Our recruiting classes have been ranked right there with Clemson. Their player development has just been better.
Posted by: CoCane | February 03, 2017 at 10:56 AM
I agree CR, it was worse and Sandusky got less than he deserves because he's still alive.
I meant it happened so long ago it was tough to figure out what Paterno and Penn State knew and when they knew it.
They have an avalanche of evidence, a ton of it which actually falls under the NCAA's jurisdiction this time.

And y'know, I always hear folks complaining about this "Everybody gets a trophy" generation. But when you look at the Baylor case, the "Anything for a trophy" generation is worse. Too many coaches lettin' kids slide because they think they can't win without em'.

Lol and Art Briles had the temerity to sue Baylor. Art Briles and Joe Paterno is the same to me. Both Scumbags. Ken Starr and that Penn State President and both the Waco Police, State College Police, Penn State and Baylor Campus Police Departments are Scumbags.

I hear ya' Terrance, they're both coochies, but I was speaking on the victims in both cases.
Posted by: CaneRock | February 03, 2017 at 11:23 AM
Are we really arguing what's worse....a guy raping boys or football players raping women where both were covered up?? Seriously????
They both are lowest forms of crime and should be punishable at the highest level. No if's, and's or but's...
Posted by: raizecane | February 03, 2017 at 11:27 AM
Again, I was speaking about the victims in both cases. The women in the Baylor case reported it to the proper authorities, didn't get an adequate response, followed it up, and here we are. While the victims in the crappy valley case were children, whom never reported it to the proper authorites, and they didn't come out until decades later.

Youre fighting ghosts TSully. Everyone is outraged and disgusted by Baylor, but Penn State takes the cake. Both programs should get their football programs removed.

Prison is too good a place for all these rapists liars and people who cover up the facts; yet if they got beat up or whatever.....it would not bother me at all....it would be like a torture chamber they deserve.....if JoPa was alive he should go to prison!!!! All the presidents, coaches players...all evil!!!
However, the seriousness of rape deserves death....you get a giant set of bleachers...wire them up....and have electric bleachers not a chair!!!
Thats what Morton Downey Jr used to say...fry them all!!!

Florida sends almost 200 kids to Power 5 schools. Incredible.
Power Five Conference high school signees...big 4 states (as of Thursday): #Florida 187, #Texas 164, #Georgia 131 & #California 113
State of #Florida 2017 signees Power 5 conference breakdown: #ACC 64, #SEC 58, #B1G 40, #Pac12 17 & #Big12 8 . #sunshinestate

Wow. Thanks for sharing. This is what I have observed. It is hard to believe, but the talent in Florida seems to grow every year. There is more talented players in the state than when Schnelly, JJ, Erickson and even Butch coached at the U. Local high school games are full of recruiters from power five conferences. The scouts love to attend games, and many have said that they are amazed and seem to commonly find recruits that are flying under the radar.
There is enough talent in Florida (and on this Canes team) for the Canes to rise back to relevance. As they continue to win, more recruits will fight to come.

I think stars are important but at the same time can be deceiving. Guys who are rated 4 or 5 * have stood out, have achieved success, have showed some skills and maturity, and are good HS players. I have coached a lot of good HS players. These guys have proven something. That being said, it does not guarantee success at the next level. Kyle Wright was supposed to make us forget KD11. J12 and that class was going to make us relevant again. Well it was not close in either situation. KW nice kid was not a good college QB. The J12 class did not do anything to make us better; they were ok....but they did not come close to the ranking they were given as a result of the *. Take a look at Ray Lewis and Ed Reed. not top rated; perhaps the 2 best to ever play their position....of all time. not big stars not rated high...BUT somebody....uh...BD saw their talent regardless of stars. so they can be deceiving!!
Recognizing talent and recruiting it, developing it and coaching it to greatness is a real key that goes hand in hand with stars. you get some 5 stars that will be great; you get guys who are 5 stars who go away. you get 2 and 3 stars that become greats; others that fill vital roles on teams. So you need all types; the elite HS talent that will amke it; others who will fall out; 2 and 3 stars guys who will become great through dedication work and coaching, and guys who may never be stars but fill vital roles.
I'd rather have elite coaching with #15 class, then Shitty coaching with #5 class. Thanks brother Epi!!!
"The Bottom" produces so much talent, there are quite a few 3* that are really 4 and 5* players. If Richt and his staff have a keen eye for talent, the rankings won't matter. Our 3* will shine on those 5* that everyone slobbers over. Just chill...
The truth will be revealed...right on Cocane!
There is so much more to players than just stars....recognizing and developing talent....like a lot of UM coaches did..HS, JJ, Ericson, Butch....thats a real piece to the puzzle and in the end great coaching..technique, fundamentals, encouraging both attitudes and competition amoungst each other....Titles

We have quite a few guys more talented then their stars. Apparently when guys shut down recruiting early, they don't necessarily get the benefit of an extra star. We have several of these guys on the roster... had they played the diva game, they'd have that 4th (or 5th) star.

Some draft people are saying Njoku has the most NFL upside at TE ever. I like Njoku but puhleez! More upside than Shockey? I think not. More upside than Winslow? Again, I think not. Thats not to say he cant have a better career than them, obviously Winslow who self inflicted major damage to his HoF talent, but he is not nearly as complete as those two were.

Perry has got a very good arm, and he puts in on the receiver. He is elusive, hard to tackle, hard to get down. quick release. I like him; I know SR does as sell, as does Ohio. I want to get a little meat on him, but he looks preety good to me. i want a guy that can move around.
Posted by: VA Cane | February 03, 2017 at 02:00 PM
TD, they're talking "upside", meaning his ceiling. Winslow and Shockey were almost complete players when they left Miami. Njoku is not, but has much more athleticism and speed than both of them combined.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | February 03, 2017 at 02:00 PM
VA Cane...you sound like a Roman at Carthage!
I'm not for shutting the schools down themselves. Students themselves are fine. It's the players and coaches to blame that should be held accountable. For Baylor, it will be ruinous to have that beatiful (and it is nice, I passed by it on I35 last year taking my family to WrestleMania) stadium sit empty for years to come.
Baylor should get death penalty plus...a two year program suspension, 15 scholarship per year limitation for four years, and a ban on conference affiliation for ten years.

Njoku will never block like Shockey. As far as speed goes, we'll see what his 40 time is, because K2 and Shock could both run also and I dont remember them dropping passes like Njoku.

TC i know... I am just kidding.....
the students are fine kids I am sure. Baylor players coaches administration is to blame...some athletes are criminals...and Briles staff and Starr and co are worse...covering up crimes. As for PSU it is sad too. Paterno knew what it was...he was not that stupid!! The Pres and others knew as well. For them to rescind the penalties, give Joe back wins...and the administration has not gone to trial...thats worse. In both cases...innocent players not involved should have been allowed to transfer and play immediately. The staffs administration and players who committed crimes should be tried...convicted if proven...and go to jail. The football program should have been shut down at least 5 years...to teach the school, not the players

Depends if he's in the playbook/school books or not. Talent is not the issue.

Njoku did drop a few passes and IMO, he seemed to take a few plays off when the ball wasn't being thrown to him. Njoku was slow off the line getting into his pattern, and his blocking was very suspect at the beginning of the season. Njoku also had a couple of bonehead penalties.
Njoku definitely has to develop more. I give him credit for development during the season, however. Njoku did improve a great deal over the course of the season as a pass catcher and blocker. His effort grew and he eliminated the stupid penalties. Njoku also displayed unreal athletic talent, especially in the open field when he caught passes. By the end of the season, Njoku began to separate himself as an elite TE. He has upside, but the question is whether he will continue to put in the work needed to develop. If so, the sky is the limit.
IMO, Herndon was a better overall TE during the season, even though his numbers were not as impressive. In terms of doing the things you coach a TE to do - Herndon is a great blocker, he knows the playbook, has a good feel for the game, carries out his assignments and he also can catch. Herndon gives 100% each play that I saw, especially when he didn't have the ball in his hands. If I were a RB or OT, I would love to play with Herndon because he carries out his assignment and is reliable. With all his freakish athletic talent, Njoku may have a higher ceiling though. We will see.

TD, agree with you on Shockey. Best true College TE I saw since Keith Jackson. Winslow was a beast, too...Him & ST26 were beasts on KOR.
Posted by: CaneRock | February 03, 2017 at 02:35 PM
Njoku?...probably the best specimen I've seen as a pass catcher since Andre Johnson.
Posted by: CaneRock | February 03, 2017 at 02:44 PM
From what I've read, they say the Haskins kid is gonna be a good one. They say His hands are so good, that the coaches had to tell Him to drop a few to not make the defense look so foolish. Shaq's Pops posted that on CIS IIRC.

BINGO. And that's what the NFL scouts are projecting. I think TD is taking it as them saying he's that guy "right now", and they're not.
"Most upside of any TE prospect ever" is very different from saying "Best TE ever to come out of college".
