The Miami Hurricanes jumped out to an early lead and held on to capture their second straight series Saturday afternoon, taking the rubber match against Pittsburgh, 5-3, at Charles L. Cost Field.
Boosted by another impressive start from junior lefthander Michael Mediavilla, Miami rebounded from a 10-3 loss in the opener Friday afternoon to win the final two games and earn their third ACC series win of the season.
"It was a big win for us, no question," head coach Jim Morris said. "I think Pitt has the best club they've had since we've been playing them in the ACC. They have a good club and really good pitching."
Redshirt senior Edgar Michelangeli provided some late insurance with a two-run home run - his second blast of the series - in the eighth inning to widen Miami’s lead.
Mediavilla (4-4) delivered an efficient start for the visitors, tossing 5.2 innings on four days’ rest. The Hialeah, Fla., native, who started Monday’s series finale against Duke earlier in the week, surrendered just five hits and one run with four strikeouts.
Miami’s bullpen once again came up clutch, with sophomore Frankie Bartow tossing the final two innings for his second save in as many days.
"I'm very proud of the way our guys bounced back," Morris said. "We got some big hits and our pitchers pitched well after that first game. It was a great series for us."
The Panthers made things interesting in the ninth, cutting the Miami lead to two runs on a sacrifice fly. But Miami’s infield turned a game-ending double play behind Bartow to seal the win.
The Hurricanes (17-19, 9-9 ACC) opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the game’s first inning off Pitt starter Josh Falk.
Miami connected for four singles in the inning, with RBI basehits coming from sophomore Romy Gonzalez and freshman Nico Baldor.
Senior Randy Batista opened the game with a single to left to reach base for the 15th straight game.
Falk (3-4) settled down the rest of the way, and would go on to toss six innings. He allowed just one hit after the first - a double from junior James Davison - and struck out four batters.
The visitors missed a chance to pad their lead in the fifth. Miami loaded the bases on walks from redshirt senior Edgar Michelangeli and junior Carl Chester sandwiched around a double off the wall in left by junior James Davison, but Falk struck out Gonzalez to hold the deficit at 2-0.
Pittsburgh (15-17, 7-11 ACC) got a run back in the fifth on an RBI single from Jacob Wright off Mediavilla. But with two runners on, the laidback lefty buckled down, retiring three-hole hitter Nick Banman on a foulout to keep his team ahead by a run.
Sophomore Andrew Cabezas entered in relief of Mediavilla in the sixth and with a runner on third base. After falling behind 3-0 in the count, Cabezas struck out Alex Amos to maintain the 2-1 lead.

I'm with you. Just saying by the time these recruits hit campus our big 3 will be juniors and the other two seniors or gone.

And then what happens if we only take 1 and find out he's no good, or a trouble maker etc.
Posted by: Dude | April 17, 2017 at 12:31 PM
I could see DE only being 1 though. I would still disagree with it.

Gordiner could probably get a medical. The lb or lb's we bring in need to be studs. We brought in 3 last cycle one of which, I don't think played his sr year because of an injury. After this year we could possibly lose 4 dt's, so adding a 3rd wouldn't hurt.

I like Moore personally myself but the question is do we really need him???
Posted by: WWIN | April 17, 2017 at 04:43 PM
Need him? Not really, although Pope & Hightower are not burners. There's some logic to having him be a silent so that Pope and Hightower sign without issue. We'll see how it plays out. I'd rather sign him as the last WR than no one else.

Ariz: He is as elite a prospect as there is in the nation.
At 6’2” 192 lbs, Bossier City, Louisiana, wide receiver Terrace Marshall is a highly sought after commodity. Marshall is the second ranked receiver in the nation according to 247sports.com, and ranks 15th in the composite rankings.
The 2018 five star recruit was a monster at the Pylon 7v7 tournament in Miami Beach Saturday, and showcased his style of play.
“I can get physical,” Marshall said. “But I got good speed, good hands, and it’s hard to catch me.”
Marshall has been hard to catch on the field during his high school career, and elite schools have taken notice.
“I don’t have a top yet,” Marshall said. “But the schools that are coming after me hard, I could say, are Texas A&M, LSU, Texas, Oregon, Miami, Nebraska -- schools like that.”
Marshall has been talking to the ‘Canes since January, but visited campus for the first time this weekend after coming to the tournament with his 7v7 team.
“I’m a little interested,” Marshall said. “I visited yesterday and I really liked it.”
The receiver sported a Miami wristband Saturday when he entered the park, and said the visit went well.
“It was nice,” Marshall said. “We toured the campus and stuff, we ate, and I talked to Coach Richt.”
“He’s a very nice coach, from past history, and I really liked him.”
But although Marshall began to develop a relationship with Richt this weekend, he already has a “really good relationship” with Coach Dugans.
Marshall said that when Miami offered he began to think about them, and said that he is interested in Miami and his other top schools “equally.” Marshall did say; however, that LSU and TCU have been recruiting him the longest.
The receiver described his recruitment as “wide-open” at this point, and listed Dugans on his list of the top relationships he has on the recruiting trail.
At this point in the Miami Hurricanes’ 2018 recruiting cycle, Marshall is a large unknown. And with commitments at the position that already include Hightower, Pope, and Wiggins, the ‘Canes will have to put in work if they want to cash in on the out-of-state product.

DE Gregory Rosseau and DE/DT Jamarcus Chatman are our next 2 commits. One most likely within the week.
Posted by: Ohio_Cane | April 18, 2017 at 09:41 AM
Richt is literally spreading these commits out over 7-14 days on purpose. There's no other explanation.
Keeping the recruiting momentum and UM's name in everyone's mouth every single week is genius.

Elite ceiling. He'll put on a ton of weight in college and hopefully keep his quickness. I'll be surprised if he's not a 4* everywhere by NSD.

Is he done playing WR?
I like him as a prospect, but until I see him put on 25 pounds and use his hands rushing the passer, its hard for me to call him 4*.

Not sure. DJ Johnson was playing WR/RB as a Senior and he may be our best pass rusher soon.
Obviously we can't assume he'll gain weight, but at 6'6, U have to assume he will. I'd be willing to bet if his home life isn't too rough, he'll gain another 15 before he gets on campus next Spring. He's still only a Junior.

Also, don't forget that Orgeron at LSU has offered this kid. LSU and Bama offers for a DL generally signify elite talent or ceiling.
Not to mention, if Coach Kool wants this kid, I'm fully on board.

If Rousseau is 200 right now, he'll be around 215-220 by the time he gets to campus. A redshirt year and boom. He'll be a 230-240 redshirt frosh.

Hello All,
I am at my Daddys in the country; he is home...asleep but home. I think me may be the strongest person or one of them I have know. Daddy worked on an appraisal today, finished it. He is a little tired and asleep but he is ready to go do his thing with appraisals. A lot of people have called but he is real private about what he calls his "country estate". He likes to be alone and does not give his address out.
His doctors say let him do things let him work let him live. They say he will be ok and fine. He said tonight he will talk to you all in a few days. He wants you to know he is ok and he is coming to the Notre Dame Irish game in November.
Thank you for all your nice thoughts. Daddy made me read them. He told me to tell you that he loves you all very much.
Thank You,
CC Little VA Cane

God has blessed him and you. actually all of us.

Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | April 18, 2017 at 11:35 PM
I cannot speak for him because he is such an independent person who is free from all things. He has a very strong, forceful and daunting way of thinking.
Except regarding his players. He loves teaching, guiding, and loving people in his life. I do not know how he does all the things he does. He never quits, and he believes he can reach every young person to believe, follow and succeed if they do as he requires them to be. He is imposing for a fellow 5' 7". I have heard so many stories from people he played with and against that he just would never back down.
Curtis Dickey and George Woodard from a school in Texas I think A & M were on the phone and both of them said he was not big but huge as a tough person. Mike Siani who he fought in a game called us, and and said he played 2 years against him, and that he never played against such a physical person and that he hated to be on the field with him. His professional guys say he guided them on and off the field to get to the NFL league. Bruce Arians who he roomed with said he has never seen a player that was about 160 hit so hard and drink so much beer. The crush of people was unreal to me. I heard all his stories, but always took them with a grain of salt. When I saw Kam Chancellor holding his hand and crying like a small child I realized how much he has done for people, I knew he was real.
From NFL people to young kids, I know my Daddy is so real and important. I told him that and he said there are so many people in the world who do so much more in so many ways and they put him to shame. That is my Daddy as always.
I hope you know he loves this place and all of you on it.
Thank you for liking my Daddy.
