April 22 | Practice 15 | Scrimmage 3
University of Miami head football coach Mark Richt was back where it all began on Saturday afternoon.
Richt returned to his alma mater as he Miami Hurricanes wrapped up their 2017 spring season with a scrimmage at Boca Raton High School.
“It was very nice to be here at Boca Raton Community High School, home of the fighting Bobcats,” Richt said. “I had some wonderful moments out here as a player. Great team. As a matter of fact, I ran into about four or five teammates before the game today and we all looked a little bit different. But everybody has got the same smile, same friendship, so that was a blessing to see all those guys."
Richt continued by saying..."You know, today I mean it was a good day in that you got to learn so much. There was a lot of plays that were made, a lot of plays that could have been made offensively. Defense early on was dominant and then before you know it they are giving up some big plays here and there, which we can’t do. We have to keep our focus the whole time.”
There were highlights on both sides of the ball, as the White team came back to beat the Orange team, 24-16.
The Orange team scored first, with Michael Badgley connecting on a 27-yard field goal to cap a nine-play, 63-yard drive in the first quarter. Malik Rosier found tight end Christopher Herndon IV over the middle for a 23-yard touchdown to put Orange up, 9-0.
But the White team began its comeback when cornerback Malek Young jumped in front of a pass to the sideline and returned the interception 72 yards for a touchdown. Young added five tackles and a second interception to his pick six from the opening half, while linebacker Charles Perry and defensive back Romeo Finely each picked off a pass on Saturday.
“The one that I scored, we were in zone,” Young said. “I was reading the quarterback. He took two steps and threw it and I broke on the ball. The other one, we were in man and I was reading the quarterback also and I undercut it and broke on the ball.”
Quarterback Jack Allison connected with wide receiver Darrell Langham for a six-yard touchdown to close out the first half and send the White team into the intermission up, 14-9.
“I felt like this spring I had to really push myself to do better and actually explode this year,” Langham said. “I have to do more.”
Kicker Marco Baeza drilled a 25-yard field goal to close out a 15-play, 64-yard drive with three points for the White team.
Quarterback Cade Weldon found Langham in the end zone for his second score of the afternoon, completing a four-yard touchdown pass that put the White team ahead, 24-9.
“Langham is a bully on the field, honestly,” wide receiver Ahmmon Richards said. “Any 50-50 ball, he is going to come down with it. He made a huge jump and he is going to surprise everyone this year.”
Richards put an exclamation point on Saturday’s scrimmage, as the freshman All-American hauled in a 72-yard touchdown from Rosier to bring the Orange within one score, 24-16.
“I’m just trying to go out every day and try to be better,” Richards said. “I am not letting all that stuff go to my head like people telling me, ‘You had a great season.’ I just try to go out there and just work.”
In addition to the scoring plays, Miami had several standouts defensively on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman defensive back Amari Carter led all Hurricanes with 10 tackles, while linebacker Shaquille Quarterman and defensive back Sheldrick Redwine were co-leading tacklers for the White team with seven stops apiece.

^^^ lots of good stuff there. The D has a chance to be a special unit. If Herndon & Richards can get to the elite level the coaches believe they can, it will take a bunch of pressure off of the QB & Walton. The Coastal is ours for the taking. Time to take it, and never give it back again.

With the talent and coaching the Canes currently have, there is no excuse for not winning the Coastal. With a young team that is more familiar with CMR's system , the Canes should develop and improve each game as they did last five games of the season. The Canes should compete for a an ACC championship and if they win it, the BCS. This is the year for the Canes to take that next step and build on that five game winning streak from last season
Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | April 23, 2017 at 12:53 PM
The excuse, for this year and this year alone, is the quarterback play. I fear Kayaa may have set us back not a season, but perhaps 6 games. And lately every year in the Coastal there is a team that has an anomalous season where they go 7-1. One year it is Duke. Another it is NC. Or another time it is Ga Tech. Whereas in the last decade, we have pretty much been guaranteed to have 1 ACC loss each season by playing a better coached and more talented FSU. That left us having to run the table in the Coastal, or very close to it. This year comes down to Allison or Perry being able to beat the Seminoles on the road. I won't panic if we do not, because what Richt is building will not truly bear fruit until 2019, when this fantastic upcoming class enters their second seasons.
Posted by: TonyCane | April 23, 2017 at 01:00 PM
I could see us losing to FSU early and maybe another game on the road like UNC or at home to the Irish or Hokies. Its very important that we handle our business and take at least 2 of 4 from those teams.

Posted by: TonyCane | April 23, 2017 at 01:00 PM
Good stuff. I'm thinking 10-2 is a very realistic goal, but wouldnt be shocked if we go 9-3 and miss out on the Coastal again. One thing I will say is different this time around is that we can now count on the D to be very, very dominant. Thats a big deal, especially on the road. Also we should certainly be considered the favorite in the Coastal, we'll see if that changes after a few games.
Posted by: Dude | April 23, 2017 at 01:10 PM
Based on talent, experience and coaching, the Canes can beat the Irish, Hokies and UNC. The Hokies and UNC will also break in new QBs, and they all have key losses among their starters. The Canes return 15 starters and most of their two-deep roster, many of those were the keys to a top ten defense. Only FSU has comparable talent and experience, but they don't have Dalvin Cook to bail them out this year. The Canes have the better playmakers on offense and defense. I like our chances this year

Allison?...or Shirreffs? I ask this because I recall you being high on Shirreffs. I'm reading that Allison still doesn't take His preparation seriously.

IMO if Shirreffs is our starter we are in trouble. I'm actually concerned that Rozier didnt distance himself, I thought he would be the clear #1 in Spring.

Only if our QB isn't any good. Imo if he plays well we'll win no matter who's running it.
Posted by: Go Canes! | April 23, 2017 at 06:30 PM
There is enough at WR and D to take pressure of the QB. If we don't win the coastal it wont be because of whose executing the plays. It will be because of whose calling them.

Teams will stack up to play us against the run and challenge our new QB daring him to throw. I'd assume, but not hope, that our new QBs would turn the ball over on sack/fumble play or misread INTs, pinning our D back.
Posted by: Sy-Cane | April 23, 2017 at 08:35 PM
Rosier is not good. Neither is Sherriffs. Don't gimme that crap about him having one good game, either.
If Perry ISNT our starter, Walton is gonna have to have 30 carries a game.

I like Perry, but IDGAD how good He is, these 10 win expectations are very rare for a true frosh. And I don't wanna hear crap about what Hurts did last year, that kid had an elite O-Line & D to cover up for His inexperience, we're not there yet.

💯
We're going to be frightening on D, especially after CMR and the gang masterfully shored up the defensive backfield.
But I disagree with Epi that QB play is less of a factor in wins and losses than play calling. Very rare to see a freshman or first time starter master and execute the playbook from day one.
Execution of basic run plays, something we couldn't do at times last season, will be even more mportant next year. Can't put a new kid in constant 3rd and long and expect him to throw as few picks as Kaaya did.
Posted by: Go Canes! | April 23, 2017 at 11:40 PM
I was referring to Tony's comment about winning the coastal, not a win total or NC. We will out talent every coastal team we play by a mile.
The QB won't have to master the o.

When we were doing it you'll find them from me.
When we stopped doing it and started putting up huge numbers you won't.
That doesn't change the fact BK is gone and the running game, predictable or not, is way, way more important to the success of our QB and offense this year than it was last year.
As it stands right now If we can't get a yard on 1st and 10 like several parts last year I fear our overall QB play could be downright awful.

Posted by: Go Canes! | April 24, 2017 at 08:52 AM
It likely will be, at least at times, but Richt has to figure out a way to get the ball to the elite playmakers around the QB. There are ways to do that.
The offense won't have to put up big numbers, especially in the coastal.

Even though there was a dropoff in overall talent in past years (as TonyCane has pointed out in detail in numerous posts), our downfall has been incompetent coaching.
With the NFL caliber players we had, beating ACC Coastal foes shouldn't have been a problem, but it was.

Miami is expected to contend for a Coastal Division crown behind an experienced defense, but questions at quarterback loom with Brad Kaaya gone.
