Diaz, plus a great push from our front 7 is going to help this new secondary considerably.

Mountain Cane

And to close out on baseball from the previous thread, we are low on talent.

There are two drivers of that shortage. One, which is not new, that the better prospects take the MLB signing bonus and skip college ball. When the $ is a million bucks, hard to argue not to take it.

Where the expensive private schools get hurt disproportionately is in the scholarship limits which are severe---I believe 11 1/2 or so. The coach tries to spread the $ around with partial scholarships but the resulting tab is still not competitive with state schools. Heck, a 1/2 scholarship off Miami's $66,000 tab will leave you with a $33,000 tab. You can go noles or turds and pass less with no scholarship.

College baseball going to die at extensive schools unless get some NCAA scholarship relief. Candidly, I think the last couple solid years will be the end of an era without scholarship rule changes,

Mountain Cane

Back on football, the Ds performance will primarily their own doing, but how the O performs impacts them as well, If we can't move the ball and get quick 3 and outs our thin db group will take a hit and it could be a problem.

Of those qb choices, gotta find the guy to lead us,gotta pray for Walton's health and some improvement in the o line and we should be ok.

Old Skool

Thanks for the Master recommendations. We'll see how my bracket does. Fortunately, the only thing riding is office cred.

Ten nuggets we’re hearing from UM’s closed spring football practices, which are about halfway completed:

•The quarterback play remains a work in progress, with some good moments but lots of inconsistency. One observer says Jack Allison has looked good and throws with more authority than the other competitors. Malik Rosier knows the offense well, and his running ability is an asset, but inconsistency remains an issue. Evan Shirreffs’ accuracy has been uneven. Cade Weldon is still learning the offense and behind several veterans.

•The experiment of moving Sheldrick Redwine from corner to safety is going well; he’s a good tackler, which should make him a solid safety opposite Jaquan Johnson. He doesn’t have great speed for cornerback but his speed for safety is fine.

• UM loves how intelligent and alert new safety Amari Carter is, believing he won’t blow assignments. He also has very good instincts. Safety Robert Knowles also has been impressive at times.

•Freshman receiver DeeJay Dallas made two great catches Tuesday, has strong hands and can go up and snatch the ball. He’s going to be a very good player. Though Darrell Langham has improved some, his hands remain an issue.

• A UM official said Kendrick Norton and RJ McIntosh have been so impressive that there’s no reason they shouldn’t be UM’s best defensive tackle combo in many years.

• Linebacker Darrion Owens, who still has two years of eligibility remaining, has looked less hesitant two years removed from knee surgery. Coaches like his character, energy, length and physicality and he will be an asset as a fourth linebacker.

• Tight ends coach Todd Hartley said this week he is “really pleased” with Michael Irvin Jr.’s development and that he and fellow backup tight end Jovani Haskins – both suspended for the bowl game – have made “significant strides.” Though early enrollee Brian Polendey is known mostly for strong blocking, a UM official said he’s a big target and catches the ball well. But Hartley said he has “a long way to go.” Hartley said starter Chris Herndon can “be the best tight end in the country. He’s always been a great pass catcher [but] been overshadowed “ by departed David Njoku.

• As good as Joe Jackson was last season (8.5 sacks), one UM person said impressive early enrollee/ defensive end Jon Garvin has been better than Jackson was at a similar stage. Garvin has terrific pass-rush moves.

• Tyler Gauthier has been so impressive at center that it’s no longer automatic that Nick Linder will get his starting job back when he returns from injury.

• Braxton Berrios likely will remain the punt returner - “he was 11th in the country, I’ll take 11th in the country,” Hartley said – but the kick return job is wide open, with Dallas, receiver Dionte Mullins and perhaps summer arrivals Jeff Thomas and Mike Harley all warranting a look.

Porter: No Robert Burns again at Canes practice. DeeJay Dallas and Dionte Mullins returning punts again.

FYI Season Opener against Bethune Cookman at the Rock on Saturday September 2ND Gametime is at 6pm.

Old Skool

No Robert Burns. Hmmm. Maybe running backs named after poets are easily hurt.

CaneRock

Linder better come back ballin', or else they might mess around and put Him at 3rd string.

Dude

Berrios is the Honda Civic of PR, very reliable. He should be in the rotation with a Ferari like Thomas though.

Hartley made a good point talking about Berrios. He said "I'm trying to get this thing blocked up right. If we block right, it doesn't matter who's back there".

While I agree partially with that, I'd prefer elite speed and shiftiness back there like Thomas, Harley, etc there. And Hartley did say he wants to see what they can do. If they're not careless back there, they'll unseat Berrios, IMO.

Time to pull the offer on that Thoreau kid.

CaneRock

I don't think the PR job should be etched in stone. If Harley &/or Thomas still need work going into the Fall, then keep workin' em' till they get it. And when they get it, you back one of those Ferraris out the garage on 9-16 and you get thi$$$$$$$$:

I like where are football team is sitting right now. We still have Bandy, Dean, and Delaney still coming in to help at DB. I like our depth at every position except RB, but we'll be fine there.

That's a pity. Aloysius "Tank" Thoreau could have been the best running back since Henry Hogshead.

But I always thought Hester's best return was that 100 yarder vs Louisville that got called back for holding...Buck Ortega man.

These coaches aren't stupid. They're not going to just say "Well, Berrios is the best returner in July, he gets the job until January"

Ohio_Cane

Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if Berrios returns the kicks that will land inside the 15, and all others go to Thomas, Harley, Mullins, etc.

Dude

^^^ There it is OC. Thats an ideal situation. KRs should be Thomas or Harley.

Dude

IPF is a go.

Ohio_Cane

Ground breaking on IPF begins May 4. Still needs $2.5 mil.

Sounds like you're talking about kickoffs? If so, yeah, I like Mullins back there, forgot about Him.

CaneRock

And I don't think these coaches are stupid, but it shouldn't have taken Linder going down to figure out that Gall was the best C...that's something that should've been figured out in Spring/Summer 16'.

No, was talking about punts. If the other team is at their 40+, punts generally land inside the 15 (aka fair catch territory because high punts = coverage around the PR), which is where sure-handed Berrios would fit.

Anything else (punts from opponents 35 or closer to their goal line, where punts would land at our 20 or closer to mid field would be where Thomas/Harley fit.

On Randy Russell

Miami safety commit Randy Russell was at practice today for the second time in the last week. With all of the talk about the defensive backs in this class, I received more confirmation this afternoon that the Canes defensive staff absolutely views Russell as a must-keep in this class. They have even referred to him as a "cornerstone member" of the class. This is a prime example of the staff recruiting to a mentality as Russell fits the exact bill they are looking for.

Jalen Patterson supposedly de-committing. Some sites have him as a *** and some as a ****. I've never seen him play.If he was going to play CB do you think he just likes his odds better somewhere else?

We stopped recruiting him when Richt was hired. Literally haven't talked to him for months. This has been coming.

Mountain Cane

Good to know, Ohio. We seemed to be running out of spots pretty early in the cycle so I thought a couple of the guys on the list might be checking out.

Ohio_Cane

So everyone is aware, Thomas Burns will be the same as Jalen Patterson. I see track in his future, not football, and definitely not football at Miami. Stopped recruiting him a while ago too.

Dude

What about Jobe? Seems like he's still looking around.

Dude

^^^ Just saw he's playing his senior year in CT.

Ohio_Cane

Yeah, Jobe too old to play in Florida. Spending Fall 2017 at Prep school.

I'm mixed on him. He's either looking around or just trolling others.

Pete:

Miami sophomore running back Travis Homer is expected to be an important part of UM’s offense next season as the team’s projected #2 behind Mark Walton.

Although coaches were impressed with Homer’s progress since year one, Gus Edwards’ transfer and Joseph Yearby declaring for the draft opened the door for the Palm Beach product Homer to see the field much more in 2017.

Homer said that his biggest area of improvement since last season is, “definitely reading the defense for protection.”

“It’s a big part of our offense. Last year, I was having real hard trouble reading the defense, but now not as much,” he said.

The second-year tailback was an ace on special teams for the Hurricanes last season and he said that he is still working on that unit in spring. Homer added that playing special teams as a freshman, “gave me the opportunities to be in a game-like situation.”

It’s no secret that Miami’s running back situation is not the deepest position on the team. Homer addressed how that affects spring practice.

“We definitely have to keep our conditioning up as a group and just keep working and getting better,” Homer said. “It gets us more experience running the ball, but it helps with our conditioning.”

UM’s star running back Mark Walton has been as reliable as any player on the roster over the past two seasons – Homer is trying to learn from him.

“Whenever I’m having a problem, he just steps in and pulls me aside or something and comments on what I need help on,” Homer said.

“I just talk to him day-to-day, watching more film after practice, just telling him to stay lower and patient with his reads. He’ll be a great guy,” Walton said. “There’s some things he can work on like patience, but overall he’s going to be a hell of a player.

Offensive coordinator Thomas Brown gave his thoughts on Homer midway through spring practice.

“Travis has always been a very mature guy from day one, compared to most guys coming out of high school. He’s trying to continue to push himself every day and compete with Mark,” Brown said.

Hey Fellow Canespacers,

I have been trying to locate a site to get the University of Miami made into boxes of checks. I will become FLA RESIDENT in about 2 weeks or so. I tried to get my old checks duplicated, but ALL school site have dropped the U from their collegiate lists. The U isn't popular anymore, for check writing. My old check site dropped them too.
HELP!!!

I bet one of the Bama recruits could donate it from their NSD signing bonus.
