The Miami Hurricanes defensive line made a name for itself in 2016, thanks in large part to the performances of standouts like Chad Thomas, Kendrick Norton, RJ McIntosh and Joe Jackson.
While that quartet projects as Miami's starters on the defensive line, the Hurricanes rotate a lot of talented players on the line to keep up their aggressive style of play. Conditioning is important to play at that pace, but so is depth, and the Hurricanes feature a talented and deep group on the defensive line.
Senior Trent Harris and redshirt junior Demetrius Jackson have proven to be quality defensive ends and they provide some immediate depth behind Thomas and Jackson. Add in the hyped freshmen Jonathan Garvin and DJ Johnson and you create even more depth at the end position. But there is one player who could be poised for a breakout season in 2017: Scott Patchan.
A redshirt sophomore, Patchan has played one snap as a Hurricane. The former four-star recruit was an explosive pass rusher coming out of IMG Academy, but a pair of knee injuries have limited him to just one snap in the Florida State game a year ago.
"I probably pushed myself too much, I probably shouldn't have been in that game," Patchan said. "I was medically cleared, obviously, but I was so excited and I kept pushing myself. Plus, I don't think the coaches would've let me not play in that game. After that there was a minor setback β tweaked the knee a little bit β but nonetheless worked hard and did whatever they asked me to do. It's been a little long I am finally feeling great now, getting my roots in the ground and wearing off the rust."
On Saturday at Miami's first scrimmage of fall camp, Patchan showed some of the explosive burst that made him a recruiting coup for the Hurricanes. Patchan finished with four tackles, including three tackles for loss for 15 yards and a pair of sacks for 13 yards.
"It was a great feeling," Patchan said of playing in the scrimmage. "Glory to God that I am healthy again. I am happy to be out here with my teammates.
While Patchan is looking to make a name for himself after a few injury-plagued seasons, senior Anthony Moten is determined to make his final season in Coral Gables his best one.
"It's my last go around," Moten said. "I'm just pushing myself and we are all pushing each other to be the best."
Moten has played largely as a reserve at Miami, making four starts while playing in 33 games over three years. But the senior from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., has worked to improve his conditioning and stamina so he can be a bigger contributor in 2017.
"Definitely with my fatigue," Moten said of his biggest improvement. "Last year if I got tired after four plays, coach wouldn't trust me after those four plays. I'm a lot better and have been working on it."

Based on what?
Posted by: Go Canes! | August 16, 2017 at 09:15 AM
The total lack of ANY excitement about the qb position.
Its Nkosi or bust in just about everyone's mind.
Like I said, I have not heard a SINGLE complement on any of our qbs THROWING ability except for the guy who just got on campus.
Richt likes to throw outside and deep. Thats not the skill set of our upperclassman.
We should be hearing more about explosive plays in the short game with our speed upgrades.
Instead we hear things suggesting mediocre qb play.
Remember last year? Turnovers should be the only reason our qbs struggle. Everything else should be pitch and catch to our skill guys, cause we dont have Matthew Stafford( Richt wants a mobile guy like this).
There are oc's out there that can make THIS group of guys really good, really fast.
Based on his track record and what we have heard
this off season, I'm just not sure Richt is one of those guys.
But hey I will accept whatever comes as long as he learned from the losing streak and calls games more like the end of the season.
Posted by: TruCane81 | August 16, 2017 at 01:49 PM
All we need is some Alex Smith style okey doke vanilla game management and we are an 11 win minimum team.

The great Wall of Miami will be the key to kicking that Seminole Azz.

That story is bogus! First off the walk on was from Vermont and has a cannon for an arm and was running the second team. What I also heard from my sources was that they are looking at a bag boy that Richt met at Publix or are just going to run wildcat 90% of the time with Dee Jay Dallas at QB.

Maybe it's one green and three not so good QBs facing a defensive roster with 20 future NFL players on it?
Not being sarcastic, mean that as an honest question.

One of these QB's needs to step up and get the ball to the play makers and avoid turnovers. I'm not excited about position but we have talent around them. I think a big wildcard is Home...we need him to step up and I think he will.

DB Teddy Stavetski is being looked at as a QB. He is from New Jersey and has been looking great. They are trying out a lot of new quarterbacks this week. Not sure if Teddy is a walk on
Posted by: The Stav | August 16, 2017 at 03:03 PM
It's definitely between Rosier and Stavetski at this point. After that big drop off to Shirreffs. As far as the freshmen go, Augie Debaise has outplayed N'Kossi. And so has the Vermont kid
Posted by: All faith in Rosier | August 16, 2017 at 03:07 PM
FYI Stavetski didn't play QB in high school. He was a receiver. Scary

BREAKING NEWS...UM is trying out a baseball pitcher, a javelin/shot put thrower and even a women's volleyball player at QB. All are running with the first team and could be named the starter by Friday. Combined they have thrown for 7 TDs and no INTs in practice today.

Posted by: All faith in Rosier | August 16, 2017 at 03:45 PM
I would be a lot more comfortable with Rosier then Sherriffs...just don't think Rosier is a 9-10 win QB

You took the words out my mouth, Go. This was my next point.
I was gonna say maybe Im just being guarded after so many hopeful offseasons.
The D is usually ahead in the offseason AND we have one of the nations best units. Tough sledding for any first team o but especially break8ng in a new qb.
I was just hoping hear that we were developing an identity in the passing game. We don't need Manziel or Winston for a good season.
Complete 60% and keep turnovers around 10 or lower and we DOMINATE everyone but fsu.
I think we can dominate them too cause Im not sold on their dc and they dont have Dalvin to save them. Francios is good. We gotta hit that fool.
Posted by: TruCane81 | August 16, 2017 at 04:03 PM
Homer reminds me of Robert Smith.
Upright style, much stronger than he looks, and ends up running away from the d looking like a 4.8 guy.
That smooth long stride looks slow but he out ran some of the best defenders in Florida.
My prediction is he hits some serious home runs and blows up as a fan fave behind Mark.
Just secure the ball!
Posted by: TruCane81 | August 16, 2017 at 04:09 PM
What is Rosier's problem?
Is Is he the starter and Richt is doing a motivation game?
Is it poise, accuracy, leadership, no command of playbook? Really what is it? I still cant get over how he played better than expected on the national stage in a tough situation.
Thought that would count for something. Guess not.
Posted by: TruCane81 | August 16, 2017 at 04:16 PM
Tru,
I think Rosier does not have superstar potential but I do think he can lead a team to a national title. Championship teams do not need superstar quarterbacks. They need someone to lead them to the end zone and not make mistakes
Posted by: All faith in Rosier | August 16, 2017 at 04:28 PM
Most people don't like Rosier and Sherriffs because of what they did in high school
Posted by: WWIN | August 16, 2017 at 04:55 PM
Or maybe because that have done zero on college? Lol
Posted by: UMike | August 16, 2017 at 05:17 PM
Rosier started one game on the road as a freshman won and played well!
Let's not act like Kaaya was all-world last year lol
The ONE and ONLY time fans saw Rosier he played well... everything else is he say she say
Posted by: WWIN | August 16, 2017 at 06:07 PM
Yes WWIN if 3560 yards 27 Touchdowns and 7INT's that BK had last year was just putrid. Thanks for setting me and anyone with a IQ higher than salad dressing straight Brotha.

I believe The Combination of Malik, Evan, N'kosi, Cade can help lead us to Great heights. I am just beyond annoyed at the constant swipes at BK like he was a bum on here and other avenues on social media. I am thankful that he more than panned out for us because if he hadn't oh boy. But as we have a deeper better overall team with better coaching hoping we stay relatively healthy we can have the best season we have had since we left the Big East in 2003. This is our 14th season in the ACC time for us to at least win ACC Coastal, Win 10 Games, and Win Bowl Game, and Finish in the Top 10.

1) Who was the last bad Miami starting quarterback?
2) Who was the last below average Miami starting QB?
Honestly I think whoever wins the starting job will be fine with better o-line play and OC play-calling.
Posted by: HillViewCane | August 16, 2017 at 09:02 PM
If Stavetski can get the ball in the hands of our playmakers, then start him. I don't care that he didnt play QB in high school

Yeah that's why NFL scouts were drooling over him right... and why Richt was BEGGING him NOT to leave??? πππ
Stats can be VERY DECEIVING!
Posted by: WWIN | August 16, 2017 at 11:08 PM
If Richt was so happy for him to leave he wouldn't be still deliberating who the QB would be he wasn't I don't recall him doing that last year but OK play that crazy game I'm your mind and others that feel that way can play that game in their mind the rest of us are laughing at that game of mental gymnastics. Stats are Stats and they speak for themselves.I stick to facts. I don't do Alternative Facts lol.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | August 16, 2017 at 11:16 PM
Posted by: Go Canes! |Β August 16, 2017 at 07:47 PM
Do you really think that Richt was going to come in and bench the GOLDEN boy (pun intended) in his first year??? Positions are OPINION based... meaning you and I might be at practice watching and you might think Harley looks better and I might think Thomas looks better... so if Harley starts over Thomas that DOES NOT prove for a FACT that Harley is better. You do know that coaches are NOT 100% correct right?
Ask yourself this? Did CMR really want Kaaya back? Do you think he was recruiting Kaaya back???
Posted by: WWIN | August 16, 2017 at 11:16 PM
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan |Β August 16, 2017 at 11:16 PM
First of all this post is real simple... Just answer this question please... Do you think CMR was recruiting Kaaya to come back???
1. Just because CMR hasn't named a starter PUBLICLY DOES NOT mean he doesn't know who the starter is.
2. How do you know he's not comfortable with all 4 QB's to start? He might be like me... and think anybody will be just as good as Kaaya! Lol
3. Is it wise to name a starter right now?
4. Will it give us an advantage over our opponents?
Stats are VERY DECEIVING!!! Kaaya throws a 2yd pass to Richard's... he takes it 90yds to da house... Kaaya gets credited for 90yds and a TD. So someone looking at the stats could say Kaaya must have thrown a bomb to AT! So you wouldn't know unless you were actually WATCHING! #StayWoke
Posted by: WWIN | August 16, 2017 at 11:28 PM
True WW,
Stats can be decieving, but its not really what you described. Its more 2 straight average to poor performances followed by straight dominance for 3 games. The kid was streaky. But it seemed towards the end, he was really becoming an outstanding QB. I wish he came back, no questiom that we'd win the Coastal with games to spare.
Posted by: Dude | August 16, 2017 at 11:48 PM
So how does Ahmon Richards have 925 receiving yards and broke Michael Irvin freshman record if his stats and he doesn't get credit lol. But keep on playing mental gymnastics brother and thanks for the laughs.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | August 16, 2017 at 11:52 PM
So Richards, N'Jokou, Coley just magically had those receiving yards and touchdowns, A QB named the Zodiac threw it to them. These Mental Gymnastics is too funny brother. I owe you a 6 Pack of Sam Adams Boston Lager. Thanks for the laughs.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | August 16, 2017 at 11:55 PM
Remember when you laughed last year... then Brad got drafted in the 6th round where he magically received another GOLDEN opportunity and you had to come back and apologize? Good times ππππππ
