Your Miami Hurricanes beat the Duke Blue Devils in convincing fashion in Durham, NC on Friday night by the score of 31-6. We are also pleased to announce that no laterals were needed during this domination of an ACC team.
As all you know, I predicted this outcome and even put it in writing right here on Canespace the day before the game.
You see I have good information that Mark Richt and his merry band of warriors have been playing it very close to the vest and hiding several key aspects of their team, game plan and play calling until they feel it is needed against better competition on the schedule.
Certainly this concept is not new or hard to believe or understand nor would it be the first time a team or coach employed this strategy going into a season.
However, in this particular case this is much richer and bit juicier from the information I have and all the indications we have seen so far.
There are 10 key factors that I believe Miami is prepared to unleash on their opponents this season. Against Duke, we saw only a two of these concepts employed but rest assured there are more coming. So watch closely Hurricane fans, the best is yet to come!
First?

Which makes it even more inexplicable most of the game was spent not doing it. Ya know how we used to watch the same play destroy us.. over and over...3, 4, 5 times each drive? Exploit it till they stop u. Not once or twice in the first and last 5 minutes of the game.
We r leaving yards and points on the field.

Derwin James got lucky for not being ejected for targeting. He would of been out the first half against us.

But to call him a liability when we've won eight straight while averaging nearly 40 a game is really splitting hairs.

You're prolly right. "Liability" is going too far. That's what happens at 3:30am on 4 hrs sleep.

Rosier's current QB rating is 166.98. Brad Kaaya's QB rating was never better than 150.31, and Rosier is also a threat to run the football

By the way, anybody with a pulse knows Richt knows quarterback play and whatnot. For instance, that stud QB from Washington state he delivered to Georgia, is currently ' No. 10 in the nation ' pass efficiency. The kid is a RS-freshmen, and MANY Cane fandom thought he would follow Richt to Miami. hUh

Also, Malik has been great and made some lights out plays but we need him to take care of the ball a little better once we have the lead and control of the game.
Posted by: Go Canes! | September 30, 2017 at 01:58 PM
He was hit as the was throwing on that INT, so he gets a pass for that one.

You have to get thrown out for targeting in the 2nd half to miss the 1st half of the next game.

It is turning out to be such a great decision to cancel Arkansas St. game. It would have been a waste of time. Arkansas St. is now 1-2, after losing to SMU 44-21 last week. The ASU AD and HC look like fools now.
CMR is really running a great Canes program right now. The Canes are in a great position to actually contend for an ACC championship

Also... I think we r in a much better position for FSU. The D starting to gel and Malik had more time to get into the playbook.

Looked pretty clean to me. And that first play of the second half was definitely a lateral.
He's playing great ball and that's definitely fixable. But the way this winning streak has played out so far we've dominated the second half of just about every game. If we continue that formula we can't give other teams life via turnover.

You are the only one saying that outside of Durham. I didn't see it, the announcers didn't see it and it was reviewed by the refs from multiple angles and thy didn't see it either. What are you looking at when you say that?

Just my opinion. I believe both announcers said it was a dangerous pass that looked like a lateral but it likely was going to be tough to overturn.
Doesnt matter. Malik is playing great ball, just pointing out that we as a team can hopefully elimnate second half turnovers as much as possible. Imo thats the only thing that can derail us at this point.
FSU looks awful, there is no reason we can't win there Saturday.
Very interested to watch VT tonight.

God I hope you are right Soup.
Fsu is terrible.
They are prime for a humiliating series redefining loss.
We can beat these guys 52-10, no exagerration.
They can stop the run first half but CANNOT guard our recievers.
Walton should be a decoy til we get up a few touchdowns passing.
Then use a mix of playaction and run to break their spirit.
WE CAN HUMILIATE THESE GUYS.
5 STARS BE DAMNED.
Posted by: TruCane81 | September 30, 2017 at 06:33 PM
Fsu o is worse than duke.
Only thing is akers and they dont run him much.
They will not score 14 points on us offensively.
Their d line is good but we can neutralize their pass rush the same way other teams did us. Running will be tough sledding early but can be effective situationally.
This is time to expose their overrated secondary.
Herndon, Richards, Berrios and co are beyond anything they have seen.
Mark cannot be covered by a linebacker.
I need to chill I am getting to excited for oct 7

2. Young is showing how a less talented db playmaking wise can be an very effective member for his unit.

UCF is beating Memphis 23-7 in the first half. That's another good college football team in Florida. With the rise of USF and UCF, does the "Florida big three" moniker need to be revised?
Of course, the best college football team in Florida is the Miami Hurricanes!
Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | September 30, 2017 at 08:39 PM
TruCane, to be realistic they've seen the type of athletes Miami has at RB and WR in their first game.
Mark my words though...they only beat us if they can force us to commit turnovers. That aside, we will win. FSU and their reign of error is about to be rendered obsolete. CMR is bringing the green and orange shovel to bury the Seminoles.

1. Only if you are making contact with the reciever. There is no incidental contact if you dont look back. The way Young does it most time is cool but he will get flagged eventually.
I have rarely seen "face guarding" called unless there was contact. Most guys run through the reciever instead of just attacking th e hands.
2. That was back in high school. Right now he does not have the ability to control recievers in a way that would allow him to break on the ball. It dont make him a scrub, just not a stud yet..

Yeah Tony there was some hyperbole but I stand by my statement because of Malik.
Also because when WE play fsu, theycant guard our recievers, even back when we had Hurns and when Rashawn was our best reciever.
We get the lead then its nut up and play scared time.

Both Miami and Washington State took away the downfield passing game in wins Friday. According to ESPN Stats & Info, Washington State held USC's Sam Darnold to 3 of 15 passing for 50 yards and an interception on throws beyond five yards. Duke's Daniel Jones went just 1 of 7 on throws of 15 yards or longer against Miami. Duke WR T.J. Rahming had just one reception of 15 yards or longer on four targets.

1. All the WR has to do is run right into him and it's pass interference EVERY time... So DB's should not do it and coaches should not teach it.
2. Sounds like another coaching issue. According to the staff he's a beast and gets a interception EVERY practice.

Good win last night. Walton needs to get healthy, which probably won't be until bowl season. It will be tough to run against FSU, especially for Walton on a bum wheel. Homer should be used more. Rosier is not great but at least he can avoid the rush and pick up yards when protection breaks down. We should beat Da Noles but we have to play to win.

I feel ya WWIN.
Im not saying its good technique or should be taught.
What I am saying is that he found a way to make plays even when he gets beat and should give up completions.
I am aware of the downside of what he does, which is why I said he will get flag.
But instead of being the guy getting picked on giving up completions against a reciever he had some difficulty shadowing, he playsd hard to the whistle and helped an overall solid performance on d.

Currently, the Canes have the top scoring offense in the ACC 41.3 points per game, and fourth ranked defense in the ACC at 16.3 per game. The Canes are third in the ACC with 3.3 sacks per game and second in the ACC with 9.0 tackles for loss per game.
Rosier leads the ACC in passing efficiency (166.98) and Walton leads the ACC in rushing yards per game (134.33).
If trends like this continue, the Canes will win the ACC Coastal Division and have a legitimate shot at winning the ACC championship and making it to the CF Playoffs

Found out there is more there than meets the eye.
They announced his alibi to the public while his wife was still missing, making it easy to frame him if thats what happened.
You have to be careful with emotional news stories. They recreate mob mentality.
Millions of people thonk OJ a murderer when the EVIDENCE PROVED HE WAS INNOCENT AT PRELIMINARY HEARING!
Noone could see it because they were given half truths and lies in pieces from a media more concerned about a ratings frenzy than the truth.
The emotions have drowned out the logic and peoples lives are destroyed.
Posted by: TruCane81 | October 01, 2017 at 09:55 AM
Yes, GoCanes and I think coaching and development play a huge part. A bad HC, OC or DC can squander talent. Texas is an example. On paper, they had more talent than us last year. Yet last year they win only 5 games, and they are defeated by Kansas (which had not beaten a 1A opponent in two years).
Superior talent can also be negated by a deficiency at one key position. For that I give you the 2006 Miami Hurricanes. Unfortunate recruiting left Miami with four scholarship receivers that season. We still had a good defense, but our offense was literally neutered. Kyle Wright did not suddenly forget how to QB. He had little to work with after his primary weapons went to the NFL after 2005 and Coker had been unable to replace them.
For us, an example would be QB. Suppose Perry had started from the get go because like FSU now, we had no choice. I presume we beat Bethune, but does a true freshmen in Perry get us past Toledo or Duke, even with the talent surrounding him? We could be 3-0. Or 1-2.

This post got me think8ng.
Judging from Malik's play, was there ever any real battle between he and Shireffs?
If there was it means we are actually pretty decent at qb.
Aint heard much about Nkosi taking over lately lol.
For the fourth game now Malik has proven he is who he said he was when he won his first start with solid play.
He and the oline have to fight for maturity together and improve every week.
Friday's defense is much closer to who we really are. We need to be better against the interior run.
I think Diaz will break out more single high press man as the seas9n progresses. Our dline is proving worthy of that trust.
This team can TRANSFORM before our eyes if we can just stay healthy.
We need to protect Mark with more first down pasing. He is proving a capable reciever and can move the chains without getting over worked in the scrum.

These are rare exceptions to the rule. 2 surprises out of 80 games. But it also speaks to the importance of coaching and play calling. Higher quality players will still struggle if they have bad coaching. Look at the golden era.

Nope, but I still think Richt and the team would be better served with a FT experienced OC (NOT Thomas Brown) who can focus on offense ONLY and utilize the talent we have properly. I'd rather see Richt as the CEO and maybe spend some time on ST IF he wants to do more than be the CEO. Our special teams need some serious tweaking.
Consistently running into stacked fronts and going three and out over and over and over again just because you want to be stubborn and not let the defense dictate to you is not productive. But Richt is smart and he knows that and has done it so far so as not to show tendencies and will not continue that against better teams (#7).
I mean I get it, defenses want to take away the run and force Rosier to throw because they feel that is the weak link that they can expose and may lead to sacks and turnovers. But there are safe patterns and passes that can be very effective and keep Rosier out of trouble while taking advantage of what the defense is giving.
I expect that to happen more often as the season progresses.
The one thing I will say is that Richt is happy just winning and never goes for style points. He seems to lack the will or the way to run it up on lesser teams and takes his foot off the gas way too much for my taste. But hey, that's just me.

Though Troy vs LSU does happen rarely, overall the games between Team 40 and Team 10 are closer than they've ever been.

This is true.
That's why when you hear the matchups announced every weekend in college football there seem to be endless number of "good games" every week. It does seem like teams 10-40 are about the same teams and most could beat the other on any given Saturday.

UCF and USF have both scored 61 points this season.
Doubt you will ever see Miami do that under Richt. Unless it is against FSU this week. LOL

He's definitely doesnt seem to be a run it up kind of coach. Our sample size is small but these are our second half scoring differentials from the second half of the ND game and our 8 game winning streak:
Notre Dame + 10
Pitt + 17
Virginia + 17
NC State +14
Duke +10
WVU +3
BCU + 10
Toledo +18
Duke +14
He does seem to play a ton of young guys as early as he can and we've been with a hobbled Walton and completely without Richards for a majority of this season.
For what it's worth we look to be as healthy as I can ever remember going into game 4. Don't think we've lost a single vital player this year to injury.

Lol we dropped 70 in last year's Season Opener.

Under Mark Richt - 60 points or more
Miami:
9/03/16 vs Florida A&M - 70 points
Georgia:
9/13/14 vs Troy - 66 points
11/8/14 vs Kentucky - 63 points
11/5/11 vs N Mexico State - 63 points
11/6/04 vs Kentucky - 62 points

On an unrelated note - the Miami Dolphins are horrendous. After 17 years of mediocrity, I wish the franchise was simply contracted or would move away. As a whole, the NFL at time is so much less than college football. And it won't change, per this article below:

That's a roster problem still right now. Especially against teams that won't pack it in for the day early or who have equal overall pro prospect talent. He's making chicken salad out of gold-hen chicken shit until next year at the earliest. Style points have been emphasized much less in a four team playoff era too, in favor of lack of losses, rightfully so.

USF and UCF are better than UF and FSU!!!
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | October 01, 2017 at 01:33 PM
Let's see what USF is like in three years. After his time in Texas I am not sold on Strong whatsoever. He took over a good team.
I still think it is a LONG time before USF, UCF, FIU, or FAU become strong enough to beat Alabama.

Man tony, I stopped watching the NFL a few years ago. The last straw was gators day inside the Canes home building. The game just isn't as good. This was a interesting article, and gives us some hope for the future of the Canes.
BTw Any cane fan going to Dolphins games should be banned from CS. And then drawn and quartered. (I'm looking at u go Canes)

I don't have the stats to back up my opinion, but I think the talent disparity between the Teams isn't as stark... everybody's on TV now, and kids want playing time, so they'll go to a USF.
Also, some really good coaches can even out a talent gap. for the most part, 5s beat 3s. Badly. If not it's a coaching problem.

I suppose no gameday for us again.
Thanks FSU.

Miami is ranked S&P ranked #11. If preseason ranking wasn't included, Miami would be #3.
Anybody know what S&P measures?
Posted by: 1mg of Epi | October 01, 2017 at 02:24 PM
Four teams from Florida ranked in the Top 25 and FSU isn't one of them.
How much could you have made on a $100 preseason bet on that one.
Posted by: Go Canes! | October 01, 2017 at 02:53 PM
FSU is a wounded animal, they wont go down without unleashing everything on us. We need to take this game seriously. Any win is a win. There will be no moral victories.

This.all.day. Miami is FSU's bowl game. Richt better have a plan to "step on their neck".
