Go Canes!

Increased stipends to players and give them a bonus at the end of their careers if they get a degree.

Player 1-85 gets there exact same amount. If you busted your ass for four years it shouldn't matter if you starred or played special teams.

UMike

You're right... I forget the internet was full of facts and everything is true 😂😂

I am open to listening to another perspective. DUDE how would paying players "ruin" college athletics?

so Yesterday they made this thing called Google right and if you do this thing called Searching facts you can see that they are Only looking at the Basketball Coaches...

This Internet Thing is GREAT!!

There are tons of plans out there. Eg endorsements, direct payment etc. etc. Nothing has to be perfect. It just needs to be better than this. The perfect shouldn't be the enemy of the good. What we have now is terrible.

TheeMackJones

Only men's basketball is being investigated. Jimmy L is NOT in ' harms way. '

Dude

I've yet to see a good plan for paying players that wouldnt completely ruin college athletics.

Sarasota 'cane

Is just basketball under investigation?

Posted by: UMike | September 28, 2017 at 03:35 PM

It better just be BB or I'm out. I can't take this shizz anymore...

Wrong, DORK! Only men's basketball is being investigated! duh.

TheeMackJones

Now this. And Alabama men's basketball has resigned after the latest FBI investigation into college basketball. Wow.

Man, the dominoes are beginning to fall into an eventual avalanche of college basketball. Ouch.

Pop goes the weasel

University of Miami athletics is under federal investigation.

TheeMackJones

When it comes to MAJOR men's college team sports. The ' purists ' are OUT OF TOUCH with REALITY!!!

The bottom line: Football and hoops players should have been paid 20 or 25 years ago. No ifs, buts or huh.

TheeMackJones

University of Miami, Florida president SAYS the men's basketball program is under Federal investigation! OUCH.

Again, the canaries are singing.

Sarasota 'cane

I agree with Hillview, pay the players. At the very least let the players cut their own endorsement deals. There's no easy solution here but there's no denying that the players are getting screwed.
If a film student on a full ride writes a screenplay there is nothing preventing them from selling the screenplay AND keeping their scholarship. The same holds true for all scholarship recipients except athletic scholarships.
I do not know how to manage this process but it's time to open up the discussion. I get that the "purist's" feel the education is the payment, but we all know the "one and done's" are not in school for an education. They should be allowed to let the market determine their value.

In the State of Florida it's illegal for an agent to make contact and give anything of value to an amateur athlete. It's a felony...

Posted by: Sarasota 'cane | September 28, 2017 at 01:34 PM

Thanks for the explanation...

But WTF!!! How can that even be a law? It's like the State and the Federal Government is an arm of the NCAA.

TheeMackJones

This whole system is stupid

Posted by: HillViewCane | September 28, 2017 at 02:49 PM

Perhaps. However, it's a BRILLANTLY designed system. Which the NCAA and universities and shoe/apparel companies and coaches make millions and millions and millions and millions and millions and millions and millions and millions of dollars. While the players don't reap the gold at the end of the rainbow. huh.

TheeMackJones

A lone wolf FLIPPED Nike to get a Federal subpoena. Ouch. That was a post FBI news conference. Yikes.

Man, the CANARIES are already singing. So they can get a ' break ' in fines and jail time. LOL

Go Canes!

You would think the parents can be prosecuted for federal tax evasion as well.

itsa_canes_thing

A question is, does the University of Miami have any ability to sue Adidas on some legal ground, Defamation (no legal expoert) and I am sure there are terms within the contract that would allow us to go elsewhere. Either that or Adidas would double-down and extend the contract in good faith. But seriously where would we go back to Nike or UA?

TheeMackJones

Nike's Elite Youth Basketball League has been issued a ' Federal subpoena. ' Ouch.

Man, Pandora's box has been blown off it's hinges and may NEVER close again.

TheeMackJones

SBHurricane nation has an excellent, precise breakdown of Florida prep star Mr. Little and Miami ( Arizona, Duke and Carolina were on his wish list for cash. ).

Oh, and one more thing. I CALLED out Miami and the allegedly $ 150,000 offered to N. Little. And that was prior to SB Hurricane nation's take on the bloody entire sordid matter. hUh. Unfortunately for me, MY Arizona Wildcats heavily recruited N. Little, and supposedly, also, offered him $ 150,000 dollars. OUCH.

Man, these prep ballers are fuc$$in GREEDY!

My, my. It's a tragic sad day for Arizona Wildcat basketball!

Sarasota 'cane

Can someone explain?

Posted by: CalgaryCane | September 28, 2017 at 01:28 PM

In the State of Florida it's illegal for an agent to make contact and give anything of value to an amateur athlete. It's a felony. I would assume there are similar laws on the Federal books. Once you use the phone, email, it's even worse. There's also money-laundering as well. It's not like there's a 1099 being given to the families and recruits so thrown in tax evasion. It's a shyt show...

CalgaryCane

I am not really sure what the FBI is investigating. Adidas is not paying a kid to do something illegal. Nor are they paying coaches to do something illegal like game fixing.

Can someone explain?

orange 'n green in the vein

If they leave it up to the refs not blowing a whistle when the ball carrier's knee is down right in front of them, they'll blow it.

If they get into a shootout, they can blow it.

If the defense gets off the bus and the offensive line keeps paving the road like they should have no problem with against a potential seven win team at best this game, it should be comfortable.

But I don't see enough killer instinct to make this a blowout road game yet, 86.

raizecane

In an Aug. 12 phone call intercepted by the FBI, and released Tuesday in a series of federal complaints involving the arrest of 10 men in a college basketball fraud case, an Adidas executive named Merl Code and sports agent Christian Dawkins were trying to figure out how to pay a high school basketball recruit $150,000 to attend the University of Miami, which is sponsored by Adidas.

The Adidas slush fund budget was a little tight at the moment and no one was happy that a “rival apparel company” had upped the bidding that high in an effort to send the recruit to one its schools. One hundred thousand seemed more appropriate. Code’s boss at Adidas, Jim Gatto, wanted to know if the kid could wait until January, when some cash might free up. Code was worried, though, that “by that point, that number might be 200 [$200,000].

Sarasota 'cane

Miami has a contract with Adidas so I'm not sure they can break that contract, especially since it appears they (along with Nike) were the ones calling the shots here. Adidas' stock will take a hit but they're an international brand that will still be pulling in mad cash.

VfB_Cane

If one of Coach L's assistants is directly involved, THEN HE IS IN TROUBLE TOO. And UM can get hit with a severe NCAA penaltiy for lack of institutional control.

Posted by: nemo2002 | September 28, 2017 at 08:54 AM

I doubt it they have enough to hit us with that again. If that was the case, we'd be featured a lot more prominently in what has transpired.

The most likely scenario, based on what we know so far, is we'll lose an assistant or two and get some recruiting restrictions or lose a scholarship for a lesser "failure to monitor" charge.

What worries me most is the impact on our adidas deal. Long-term the U will be OK, because the brand is too good not to attract other suitors, but short term we could lose a lot of money. And, even if no one is openly admitting it, money equals wins in today's college sports world.

My dad who's a Vietnam Vet said The same thing. I'll have to watch it. I wonder if I can get it on demand?

Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | September 28, 2017 at 09:30 AM

I'm watching it online at PBS.com They have different versions as well. I'm watching the "explicit language" version. Great doc!

thirstybuzzardcane

Also The Vietnam War on PBS directed by Ken Burns and Lynn Novick is perhaps the best documentary that I have ever watched. It's 11 episodes, 18 total hours and tells the story of the war from every angle. It's unreal!! I finished episode 8 tonight and I can's wait to watch the rest.

TruCane81

No he isn't. He's going to live and die by that front four pass rush again this season and he'll end up having another good year by the end of this one to go with his competent one last year. The doofus you're referring to never even had one good season, just historically bad one after historically bad one no matter how cuffed regarding tempo the other half of the team played to try to protect the swiss cheese scheme that GD couldn't stop slurping up. I know that's a low bar to clear but they're still using smoke and mirrors this year to hide problems on the roster so it'll have to suffice for one more signing day. Good thing it'll be an early one I guess.

Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | September 25, 2017 at 11:06 AM

I hope you are right, ogv.

The thing that worries me is the same plays are constantly open.

You take away quick passing with alignment and the first two games have been a clusterfuck.

Good sprts knowledge in your posts when you dont need an interpreter lol.

Not me! It's not credible to think that the head coach would not know more about "incentives" being offered to a top recruit and his family.
If one of Coach L's assistants is directly involved, THEN HE IS IN TROUBLE TOO. And UM can get hit with a severe NCAA penaltiy for lack of institutional control.
Just because his lawyer - who is mainly known for representing injured patients in medical malpractice cases - says that Coach L is "not involved" doesn't mean that UM is in the clear.
Believe me, Coach L is not sleeping well these days; and neither am I.

TruCane81

I agree Cinco! I think he's right up there with Walton, IMO!

Good young back but different style.

Stronger and faster at same stage as Mark, but lateral movement is w9rlds apart.

Th9se jump cuts Mark is doing now are ridiculous.

If Homer gets anything close to that he would be special.

Pablo was the bar, but Cali had the brains! It's an awesome season and may be the last. Like WWIN said, Pablo's brother wants 1 billion for "trademark violations".
A location scout from Mexico was killed a few weeks ago while scouting locations for season 4 outside of Mexico City. They ain't playing!

raizecane

Sarasota - will start watching season 3 very soon. Hard to believe its better then 1 or 2 as both of those were really good. Pablo was "it" and the Cali cartel didn't have anyone near his status or ruthlessness.

So Hugh Hefner's dead, I wonder how many arms he died in.

I'm sure many are up to date on this already but Narcos Season 3: The Cali Cartel on Netflix is off the chain good! Best of the series so far.
