BigWindyCane1

The Canes can win this game if Malik Rosier plays well and doesn't turn the ball over. The defense will take care of the rest.

If the Canes win this game against ND, IMO the Canes deserve to leapfrog Wisky and even Clemson, and move into the top four. That would be deserving because it would give them a quality win against a top four team.

But even if the CFP Committee decides to play politics for now in favor of seeking one representative per conference in the final four, the Canes still must win out in order to hold off a representative from the Big Ten, Big 12 and PAC 12 from moving in. I don't think the committee will favor a one-loss Canes team

Right now our WR situation is similar to bama's... more RUN BLOCKING than PASS CATCHING... we better do something about it or WR's will start looking elsewhere!

My suggestion... we need to run a up tempo spread offense to give us more plays that gives us more opportunities to spread the ball around!

What up “Party People”?!? Here’s looking at U CGNC! Da U!

UMike - I heard that interview and it hit me also. HUGE cultural shift from the Golden Loser Years and speaks volumes about the return of “U Family” to the Program. Richt deserves big time accolades for turning around that loser culture so quickly.

Fans lose sight that becoming a winning program is a process. It started last season but the combo of replacing a 3 year starting QB, Irma’s disruption & distraction, losing a NFL caliber starting RB, and the injury to Richards set us back, seriously set us back. That’s my explanation for the inconsistencies and some of the play calling. I see the team getting better though and certainly rose to the occasion last night, able to overcome the 3 INTs. That is mucho credit to Richt & the entire staff. AND mucho credit to the players - serious heart. Love it!

ND is better than VT. I believe we can...will take em. But no joke, ND > VT.

How many of the 10 secrets has Miami unveiled so far?

Posted by: Tonycane | November 05, 2017 at 04:52 PM

After this last game I would say 5-6. Here are some of what I was told not verbatim but loosely worded and summarized:

1. JJ as an old skool "Rover back" not a true safety. He will be everywhere, and he will be there all the time. As the season goes on he will be given free reign to position as needed or indicated. He will lead the team in tackles.

2. Malik will run a LOT more as the season progresses. They will protect him early in the season but he will keep it and run more often and his called run plays will increase as the year goes on and the importance of games increases.

3. The DL will be forced to build strength and stamina in early games engaging blockers rather than shedding and destroying. That will prepare them for later in the season when "The Shredder" technique will be restored on the DL.

4. DJ Dallas will emerge as a Reggie Bush type (Someone called it here) player with multiple formations, play calls and usage as the season goes on. Can U say "Wildcat"? Can U say "option"? Yeah, I though you could!

5. TE Herndon will be hidden from view. He is the secret weapon and the missing link. He will be unveiled as the season moves on and when his team needs him most and when opposing teams minimize his importance.

6. The play calling will gradually change and become more creative as the season progresses from vanilla to strawberry cheesecake and eventually rocky road. Richt wants to build dominance and resilience but will move forward as required or needed.

Something Rosier said after the game was really telling. He said after his picks the D came over to him and said not to worry they had his back. He then said a couple years ago if that happened no one would say anything

Dude on a Pale Horse

You'd think a church with that many people would have had a "good guy with a gun" in it.

Dude on a Pale Horse

This Hurricane team looks like a very tight group. They are laser focused on Notre Dame and there is so much positive momentum now, I'm really starting to believe we can pull it off undefeated. Most of these kids really seem to get it, they have eachothers back with 100% belief.

Hard Rock was packed, very good job by Hurricanes fans and next weekend will be just as good. You guys are holding up your end of the bargain.

Mullins needs a talkin to. A man keeps that conversation in house, between him and his coaches. I want Mullins to succeed to the utmost, but the team doesnt need that stuff out there and furthermore, his action wont help change his situation. Kid is going to get passed over and ran out if he keeps it up.

AfriCane

Please, no one talk to me about getting tested by a D-line. We’ve been getting tested all season. I thought that line of V-tech was the jaugernaught.

This is why creativity and better accuracy from Malik are so paramount.

People still dont realize how good we REALLY are.

Richt is growing and looks hungry.

It seems OGV was correct in Richt being due for ascension to the top.

The staff is learning from their mistakes and coaching the players up.

Guys like Mullins have to be patient. They will get their shot as Richt continues to get his groove as oc.

It is correct that we can see how the creativity is opening up our core plays that have been inconsistent.

If the defense cant key us at the snap? Game over.

We WILL win the national title in cinderella fashion.

12% or die.

Things are about to get very interesting

AeroCane

Notre Dame will bring an even tougher test - both lines and wimbsh will test us
Our linebacker play will be critical
The DL is the DL - awesome and aggressive

Our OL needs to open up some lanes for MR, TH and DeeJ and give MR some time to find AR, JT, CH and AR

Edit...the last 4 games are an indicator that this team either plays up or down to their opponent.

CaneRock

I don't think it's about execution so much... to me, the 3 games prior are an indicator that this team either plays up or down to their opponent.

Given that, we know they'll play a fired up 60 minutes or more vs ND, BUT, will they bring that same fire vs Pitt & UVA?...TBD.

Great info EPI. And you better believe they’ve worked on those plays in practice, and rolled it out for this game and this opponent. Canes still have issues with offensive execution, but it’s getting better. I hope this is a sign of things to come.

Herbieibis

The Herb has to admit I was a nay-sayer but also hoped I was wrong and thank God! The running game, hello, finally Richt changed some things up, especially with some QB draws and the O-Line finally did some blocking,. The Defense did their usual job. Aside from some misguided throws from Rosey, this is the best they have played this year and I'm sure the way most of us hoped they would play, better late than never. They will have to play as good or better next week and I hope the juices are flowing even higher, cause The Herb hates N.Dame and we owe them a severe ass whooping, for the last 3 to 4 times we have played them. Louisville will take care of The Wahoo's next week So with Charlotte only being 20 minutes from The Herb's house, hopefully I'll get to meet many of U spacers.

As far as upset players go, attrition is a sign of competition.

Great info Epi, thanks. New wrinkles definitely helped.

Think Richards busting his ass blocking on Herndon’s TD and the o-line opening holes for Malik and Homer to go 50 yds untouched to the house shows what CMR and great execution by our guys can do.

Really love this group of guys.

ONCE I think... maybe twice but definitely no more 2

1mg of Epi

Also there were 2 back sets and other formations we haven't seen. The OC definitely expanded the O.

Part of the reason for the better execution was probably that the D wasn't able to read the play pre snap. If u know where a Play is going it's easier to cover it up.

1mg of Epi

Posted by: Go Canes!! | November 05, 2017 at 11:46 AM

From CIS:

Props to the offensive staff for drawing up some new plays in the running game. All year, we have relied on basically two running plays -- the outsize zone read and the shotgun sweep with the 2 pulling lineman. Defenses were keyed in on those.

VT was not ready for the Inside Zone Read play. Instead of reading the DE, Rosier would read the unblocked defensive tackle. Perfect scheme to slowdown their interior rush. DTs were crashing on the RBs, leaving a nice running lane for Rosier. I wasn't able to convert the plays to GIFs, so I put the time stamp of the plays from the video below.

See the 19:01 mark.

We also finally saw some misdirection. This is another zone read play, but instead, we see Herndon with cross block action. His movement takes the outside linebacker (#49) with him. Tyree St. Louis does enough to get in front of the DT, and the rest of the line just walls off the left side.

See the 53:18 mark of the video.

We also saw different variations of the QB run game, including draws and sweeps. Another great scheme to slow down an aggressive defensive front.

See the 1:54:55 mark.
See the 2:03:14 mark.
See the 2:02:25 mark.

nemo2002

Hey now! UM has the longest consecutive win streak in the country; and it keeps getting longer each week. I can't even remember the last time the U lost a football game; nor do I want to.

Langham was targeted a few times at least

WWIN

Understand Mullins... can DEFINITELY be said about Langham! Don't understand what Trayone did wrong either???

His Royal Dudeness

Jaquan said dominate, and we did it.

UMike

After the Herdon TD, they we're showing him by the bench and you can see Mullins as clear as day and his face had the look of disgust on it, he was happy one bit and this was after a big TD.

Go Canes!!

Nobody knows more than Windy so to him I defer all things. I’m sure they definitely put in new wrinkles for new opponents.

But the three big plays we had for TDs

1) Rosier’s designed draw
2) Homers inside handoff
3) Out pattern to Herndon

Are all plays we’ve run a ton of times.

Point to me I guess is when we execute properly we can make multiple explosive plays a game, which offset a lot of streaky play we’re going to get with Malik.

As far as the play calling goes, aside from a couple of trick plays early, I didnt see much if anything different.

To me the the only change is tha fact we executed

Posted by: Go Canes! | November 05, 2017 at 09:02 AM

Disagree. Think We saw designed non RPO runs for Malik, motion, different sets and routes. Think we even saw actual play action.

That combined w the trickeration kept the D off balance some.

UMike

Go, you think outside of the couple trick plays this was the same offense we've seen all year? I disagree my friend. There was a sweep to Berrios, a number of fake sweeps, qb draws, the play sequence was different, we went deep way more often etc. I think it was a big difference. Definitely less drops etc, but Imo a lot was different.

BigWindyCane1

As dominant as the Canes looked last night, I still think they can actually play better. Unforced turnovers and penalties on offense should and will be addressed. But I was pleased with improvement on defense. Starters and backups were playing their responsibilities appropriately. Also, I think the coaches on offense and defense have been "playing possum" up until now. They are now starting to roll out the playbook.

It was good to see Donaldson back in there. He is very massive and talented, and those famous VT DTs could not disrupt as they normally do. Some of the best runs were behind Donaldson.

The entire offensive line played its best game I have seen since Stoutland was here. If the OL continues to play like this, the Canes have a chance to win it all.

mi@mic@ne

Malik is 6 feet tall..the d game plan will be to rush 6 across the line to take away his passing lanes daring him to complete a pass...thats what he will face every week.
