In this three part series we have been focusing on what Miami needs to do to beat Clemson, win the ACC and compete for a National Championship Title.
Others have tried to copy this great idea (I know you are reading this and you know who you are) with a slight twist because it was, in fact, such a great idea.
In Part I of the series we answered the obvious question: How does Miami stack up talent wise versus teams like Clemson and the other playoff teams like Alabama, Georgia and Oklahoma. Most knowledgeable college football fans already knew the obvious when we told you that Miami trails these teams in recruiting over the last 3-5 years by a significant margin.
Head coach Mark Richt recruited very well last year, is killing it this year with his #Storm18 class and still has a long way to go to make up the talent gap that has been created over the past five years. We wish him luck and success.
The top four teams average 10 five star and 44 four star players per team.
Miami has just 2 five stars and 24 four star players on their current roster.
In Part II of the series we looked at the most glaring and obvious issues on the current team: Offensive woes that resulted from poor execution, poor QB play, poor play calling and game planning and key injuries that impacted the team during the season. At times it looked like a complete cluster *&%$.
All of these factors created the perfect storm (pun intended) for the 2017 UM offense that at times looked unstoppable (Notre Dame)and at other times could not get out of their own way (Pitt, Clemson, Wisconsin and others).
To be clear Miami trailed Clemson in every offensive category that counts: Scoring (Clemson #21, Miami #57, Total Offense (#31, #58), Rushing Offense (#33, #73) and Passing Offense (#50, #52).
In Part III of the series we are going to look at a few more statistical categories where the Hurricanes must improve if they are going to win something more than the weak Coastal Division of the ACC and compete with the Big Boys.
These categories are:
Third Down Conversions - Offense: Clemson #10, Miami #123
First Downs - Gained: Clemson #12, Miami #89
First Downs - Allowed: Clemson #11, Miami #68
Time of Possession: Clemson #44, Miami #119
It doesn't take a rocket scientist, an MIT grad, the GEICO Gecko or our own prominent resident statistician TonyCane to do the math and figure out what went wrong with the Miami Hurricanes in 2017.
On offense the Hurricanes could not get a first down to save their lives and had way too many three-and-outs. This usually resulted in poor field position, too many punts (with a poor punter to boot, pun intended) and often times put too much pressure put on the young, aggressive and at times worn out defense.
On defense the Hurricanes could not get off the field on third down, gave up way too many first downs overall and too many conversions on third down even when the defense had other teams in third and long. In fact there were times during the season when fans would use this statement as a punchline: "The other team has us just where they want us, in third and long!"
Solution: Next year the Hurricanes must convert 45% or more on third downs on offense. They also must get off the field on defense on third and 7 yards or more. Or 11 yards or more. Or 17 yards or more. Or, well, you get my drift.
Sinister......yes, Saban did give praise to smart. Do your research before spewing garbage,....

Unfortunately the last time there was anything to give UM congrats about, nobody knew or cared what a Mark Richt was. There also wasn’t a social media for him to use to get that message out. That said, I have no doubt given the platform, 1983 Richt would’ve shouted out his team.
This is the man Parents want watching over their kids. When he talks family to recruits, this is an example what he means.
Honestly, u are waaaaay over reacting to this. Richt shouting them out doesn’t make him look like a jilted lover. It makes him look like someone secure in where he’s at.

The only analogous situation would be the 83 team. I do beleive I read Richt sent out props via homing pigeon and telegraph.

Nick Saban told me he called Kirby Smart to congratulate him earlier Sunday morning on winning the SEC title. We could see the first Saban vs. Smart matchup for the national title if Alabama and Georgia both win their CFP semifinal games.

I would not rank Miami in top 5 without McIntosh & Norton. I feel like top 15 or top 20 is right. Weve got a loooong ways to go to close the talent gaps at the top. We shouldnt consider the Coastal a gimme, although we will be the favorite and should be.

Sinister...he has stepped up recruiting. Amazing what a massive cash infusion by the admin and hiring of a phalanx of support personnel will do for recruiting. As for on the field results...I will say this. Georgia may have gotten to where they are only because Florida completely imploded and Auburn manages to rise to the occasion and beat Alabama.
The team Kirby inherited was well stocked and talented. Ours was talented but paper thin. He has coached well and built on Richts foundation, but he is taking advantage of a historically weak SEC East this year.

USC had a plan to recruit with those guys. USC out-recruited everyone, because USC was cool. Then Oregon did it in their way. Miami is just starting to sniff out cool again. We need an offense that is cool, we need to stop kidding ourselves. As good as this class is, its only the bare minimum and weve been so far below this level of recruiting for 10 years. We need to kill this way of thinking we can pro style run and throw because we have better players... sure, better than GT, but not so much better than VT @home or FSU or Clemson or UNC when we have injuries. Miami needs to have a flashy offense and a fast defense. Cool.

"If the new starting QB next year can play anything like the UCF QB played yesterday (after a slow start) he will make Mark look really good.
Posted by: 86Cane | January 02, 2018 at 11:00 AM "
So now is the time to suggest to you that the major problem with a football team that has a returning leader in TD's accounted for in a season and the coach who just called the offensive plays for that season lies somewhere else than those two places.
Yards gained per point scored on offense this year was an only ok 13.87. Great offenses are at the 10.0 yard per point mark in college in football, bad is around 20.0 and mediocre at around 15.0. That has to improve next year to a more efficient ratio.
Defensively a good defensive team has a yards per point average for a year of 20.0, a bad one near 10.0 and average in the 15.0 range, Miami was only 15.81 for the year, barely above average. Block a field goal for once or get a shank to fly wide and it would have edged up to a slightly above average number this year maybe. This must improve into the 17.5 or higher realm next season to turn the corner from just meeting meager expectations like this year to exceeding them to something to give any more attention to go going forward.
Posted by: orange 'n green in the vein | January 09, 2018 at 02:21 AM
Royal...until we become “cool” and recruit at a top 5 level for four consecutive years we need more innovation on both sides of the field. That’s how Oregon rose to prominence. And we need to get lucky and secure that “6 Star” program elevating talent. A Vince Young. A Lamar Jackson. That’s how you beat an Alabama.
Because in the short term,..until there is public or student blowback at the unsustainable college football costs,or until Saban retires there is no way to beat a team that is 3 deep with 5 star players. Saban was brave and the greatest coach ever because he benched his five star quarterback in favor of a true freshman...who was a five star quarterback and the number one player at his position coming out of high school....and had played during the season. Richt was not daring enough for keeping his three star quarterback benched in favor of his two star quarterback who had hardly played...or for not burning the redshirt on his four star quarterback at the end of the season who had seen no game time at all.
Posted by: TonyCane | January 09, 2018 at 03:37 AM
A lot of people are saying we should have played Perry but what if he just didn't look better? Honestly Rosier did pretty much what we were reading he was doing in practice before the season started. 3 touchdowns 2 interceptions etc.
I remembered reading the reports and thinking he wouldn't be the starter because of that but Richt thought he was the best.
Posted by: HillViewCane | January 09, 2018 at 07:12 AM
It’s tempting to think perry should’ve played this year, but he def wasn’t physically ready. Whatever other conclusions u come too, ya gotta know that he’s have been dead today if he played with our line.

I had a feeling that Saban would pull the trigger and put Tua in. Tua had plenty of reps during Alabama blowout wins and was the better passer. Tua was ready, and UGA wasn’t fully prepared for a change in QBs after halftime.
It will be interesting to see how Saban handles his newly created QB controversy in the spring and fall. Frankly, I am not impressed by Hurts or Tua. I think the Perry can be better, because he can run and throw. Perry has the physical tools, and he has gained weight this season under the S&C program. Perry needs to understand the playbook and how to read defenses, which is the most difficult part. Williams will push him, but Williams has the physical tools but Perry has a little more. It will be a great competition and don’t count out Weldon.

Said all week he barely got by Notre Dame, got blown out by more than three touchdowns by Auburn, got scorched by Oklahoma's offense who later choked away a lead they never should have, then blew a two TD lead to Bama and were lucky to even get to OT.
They were a solid Top 10 team but were flawed just like everyone else in college football.
Some people were making it seem like Smart took Richt's .500 team and turned them into the 2001 Canes.
As far as burning Perry's redshirt goes, the kid who played last night had already appeared in seven games this season. There's no comparison, just like there's no comparing Saban benching their starter for him the way RIcht did then changed his mind.
Tagovalloa was a 5 Star and the consensus overall #1 dual threat QB in the country. Comparing him to Evan Sherreffs is pretty absurd.
Again, another difference between us and the big boys. Bench a 4 Star to bring in a 5 Star. Richt's tenure is in it's infancy, only one full cycle recruiting. It takes time to build a champion from a good but thin team.
Except for Scott Frost of course who would have won last night's game easily.
