In this three part series we have been focusing on what Miami needs to do to beat Clemson, win the ACC and compete for a National Championship Title.
Others have tried to copy this great idea (I know you are reading this and you know who you are) with a slight twist because it was, in fact, such a great idea.
In Part I of the series we answered the obvious question: How does Miami stack up talent wise versus teams like Clemson and the other playoff teams like Alabama, Georgia and Oklahoma. Most knowledgeable college football fans already knew the obvious when we told you that Miami trails these teams in recruiting over the last 3-5 years by a significant margin.
Head coach Mark Richt recruited very well last year, is killing it this year with his #Storm18 class and still has a long way to go to make up the talent gap that has been created over the past five years. We wish him luck and success.
The top four teams average 10 five star and 44 four star players per team.
Miami has just 2 five stars and 24 four star players on their current roster.
In Part II of the series we looked at the most glaring and obvious issues on the current team: Offensive woes that resulted from poor execution, poor QB play, poor play calling and game planning and key injuries that impacted the team during the season. At times it looked like a complete cluster *&%$.
All of these factors created the perfect storm (pun intended) for the 2017 UM offense that at times looked unstoppable (Notre Dame)and at other times could not get out of their own way (Pitt, Clemson, Wisconsin and others).
To be clear Miami trailed Clemson in every offensive category that counts: Scoring (Clemson #21, Miami #57, Total Offense (#31, #58), Rushing Offense (#33, #73) and Passing Offense (#50, #52).
In Part III of the series we are going to look at a few more statistical categories where the Hurricanes must improve if they are going to win something more than the weak Coastal Division of the ACC and compete with the Big Boys.
These categories are:
Third Down Conversions - Offense: Clemson #10, Miami #123
First Downs - Gained: Clemson #12, Miami #89
First Downs - Allowed: Clemson #11, Miami #68
Time of Possession: Clemson #44, Miami #119
It doesn't take a rocket scientist, an MIT grad, the GEICO Gecko or our own prominent resident statistician TonyCane to do the math and figure out what went wrong with the Miami Hurricanes in 2017.
On offense the Hurricanes could not get a first down to save their lives and had way too many three-and-outs. This usually resulted in poor field position, too many punts (with a poor punter to boot, pun intended) and often times put too much pressure put on the young, aggressive and at times worn out defense.
On defense the Hurricanes could not get off the field on third down, gave up way too many first downs overall and too many conversions on third down even when the defense had other teams in third and long. In fact there were times during the season when fans would use this statement as a punchline: "The other team has us just where they want us, in third and long!"
Solution: Next year the Hurricanes must convert 45% or more on third downs on offense. They also must get off the field on defense on third and 7 yards or more. Or 11 yards or more. Or 17 yards or more. Or, well, you get my drift.

We'll be fine isnt the goal to take the next step though.
We need 4 starters and 3 on the bench learning so they are pushed in too early. The more deep and talented that backup squad is, the better we will be with coach Kul working on them.
We need at least 2 playable NT for ACC play. Ford is 1 assuming he hits needed weight. We need a JC guy to spell him and Nesta will get a chance here also. That makes 3.
We need at least 2 playable DT for ACC play. Willis will draw double teams if he is as disruptive as we think he can be. Thats great news for Joe & Jon. Need Bethel to give us very little drop off. Who is Martin? Briggs can get reps here if he makes weight. Need another project guy behind him (Carson) or this kid we just offered (Langham), because he'd put us 1 up on DTs for next year.
Thats called being prepared, something every great coach obsesses over.

1. Willis
2. Ford
3. Bethel
4. JC Player
5. Nesta
6. Briggs
7. Carson (Redshirt)
8. Martin? Needs to make a name for himself or grab a scholly at Indiana.

The only way you accumulate that many good interior linemen is time.
You can't do that in one full recruiting cycle.

Posted by: Go Canes!! | January 11, 2018 at 05:03 PM
4 DTs in one cycle should be our goal and it can be done. Im not asking for a miracle here. Im not asking for two 5*s and two 4*s. Im saying one playable NT from JC, a 3*... two blue chip prospects at DT, we already have Nesta and we need Briggs to buy in, he says we lead... and one 3* kid that Coach Kul thinks can play after some work.
Now that might not be their goal, Im saying that would be mine and I gave my reasons for it.
Posted by: His Royal Dudeness | January 11, 2018 at 05:09 PM
Next year I could be a freshman up and only need to recruit 1 guy. Thats preperation, thats how you escalate the talent level.
2019.
1. Jr Ford 6'5" 315 NT
2. Jr Bethel 6'3" 290 DT
3. Sr JC Player 6'2" 310 NT
4. So Silvera 6'2" 300 DT/NT
5. So Briggs 6'4" 290 DT
6. *Fr Carson 6'4" 285 DT
7. Fr Johnny 4 star NT
For 2020 you could have Ford declaring & the Sr JC Player graduating. Meaning you need to target only 2 or 3 guys depending on how good of talent you can swing.
Seriously, 4 DTs is optimal, its setting us up for the future.
Posted by: His Royal Dudeness | January 11, 2018 at 05:17 PM
Maybe if I only have to recruit 1 DT for 2019, I can maybe spend a bunch more energy on 3 or 4 premium DTs and take the guy that signs early.
Posted by: His Royal Dudeness | January 11, 2018 at 05:18 PM
2020
1. Jr Nesta
2. Sr Bethel
3. Jr Briggs
4. *So Carson
5. So Johnny 4 star
6. Fr Jonny 5 star
7. Fr Johnny 4 star
Go,
Getting a JC, 2 four stars and a project 3 star is how we get to the depth that you of all people have sought.
Posted by: His Royal Dudeness | January 11, 2018 at 05:23 PM
4 DTs per cycle would mean you have 16 at the end of four years.
I’ll go back to saying CMR has done this at the highest level for 17 years as a HC, he knows who we need to sign and how many.
Posted by: Go Canes!! | January 11, 2018 at 05:25 PM
Posted by: Go Canes!! | January 11, 2018 at 05:25 PM
Not per cycle, just this cycle. 1 is a JC Player, 2 are competing for immediate playing time and 1 is for next years cycle so you only have to get 1.
I already said this is my opinion. Its my opinion of how to be really prepared. Im not disrespecting CMR in the slightest.

So true, but so do a bunch of other things. You have to put yourself in a situation where you dont need a ton of STARS every year. There are a bunch of really good 3* DTs out there that can be groomed with a RS year. If a 3* Redshirt can be as good as a 4 star HS kid the next year, then we basically have two 4* kids coming in the next year.
Posted by: His Royal Dudeness | January 11, 2018 at 05:54 PM
^^^ A difference between us and Bama is they'll RS a top notch 4* kid, So next year he's like a HS 5*. Add to the that two 5* DTs they'll bring in next year and you have like 3 5* kids as freshmen, stacked behind a few years of 4* & 5* kids ahead of them. They are totally loaded.

5 STARS MATTER
Posted by: nemo2002 | January 11, 2018 at 06:43 PM
315 five star DT from TX and the 6'5" 325 five star DT from GA to play in our defense.

No, but when I see film of practices, I see more standing around than I would like to see. I dont think you have to be Jon Gruden and work all the time, but you do need to perfect time management and perfect all the tiny little details that come in to maintaining a winning culture.
Should I tell them my idea for the 10th coach?

Settle it like men? Do u mean we should meet up at a hooters, eat wings and ogle tits neither of us will be touching? Or do u mean we should fight?
I’d def be down w the hooters thing. The fighting thing, I’d rather not. It wouldn’t be a good career move for me to get arrested for fighting... they frown on that Here at work. But if that’s what u wanna do, that’s what we’ll do.
Maybe we could meet up at a hooters parking lot.... if u still think it’s a good idea for u to take a run at me, then So be it. But if not, we can just skip to the wings and staring at tits thing.
U let me know.
