Meier is one of the best coaches at UM, bar none. She is great, and has a great reputation among local boys and girls high school basketball coaches. Thanks TSully and Soup for giving her much-deserved props.

86Cane

Katie Meier completed her 12th season at the helm of the Hurricanes’ women’s basketball program in 2016-17. A well-known and respected figure in women’s basketball with 16 years of head coaching experience, Meier has worked tirelessly to put her mark on Miami’s program and to build a winning tradition.

In 2016-17, Meier guided her team to an eighth consecutive postseason, a sixth trip to the NCAA Tournament in the last seven years, and a seventh 20-plus win season in the last eight years, all extending program records. The Hurricanes finished with a 24-9 record, tied for the fifth-most wins in a single campaign in program history, and made the ACC Tournament semifinals for the second straight year.

Following the season, Meier was indcuted into the University of Miami Sports Hall of Fame, becoming the fourth basketball coach, male or female, to garner the prestigious honor.

In January 2014, Meier was named a co-recipient of the 2013 USA Basketball National Coach of the Year award after leading the USA U19 team to a gold medal and perfect 9-0 record at the 2013 FIBA U19 World Championship.

All of her hard work was rewarded after the 2010-11 season when she was named the Associated Press National Coach of the Year - sharing the award with Connecticut’s Geno Auriemma and Stanford’s Tara VanDerveer.

That season, Meier led the Hurricanes into the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2004 and their win over Gardner-Webb in the first round was the first tournament win for Miami since 1993. The Canes entered the 2010-11 season with high internal expectations, but were picked eighth in the Preseason ACC Poll after a season in which they were the No. 12 seed in the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament.

However, the Hurricanes exceeded all of the outside expectations and, at one point, won 17 straight games. They were a perfect 20-0 inside the BankUnited Center and finished 12-2 in ACC play - earning their first regular season conference title since joining the league in 2004. As a reward, Meier was named the ACC Coach of the Year and later would be selected as the WBCA/RUSSELL ATHLETIC Region 2 Coach of the Year, as voted on by her peers.

For her dedication to the University of Miami and the athletic department, Meier was signed to a two-year contract extension, securing the Wheaton, Ill., native through the 2017-18 season. Prior to the 2014-15 season, Meier received another extension, through the 2020-21 campaign, and donated $75,000 back to the school to go towards women’s athletics as well as challenged to community to contribute as well.

Meier earned another well-deserved extension after a 2016-17 season that included the Hurricanes hosting NCAA Tournament play for the first time since 1993. The new deal added three years to her contract, which now runs through the 2023-24 season.

I think what Go said is that Golden, despite his on the field issues, was able to recruit a solid base of players that Richt could work with. We could have really collapsed in recruiting during 2012 and 2013, but Golden not only kept that intact but greatly improved on what Shannon and Coner had done. That’s all. He should get credit for bringing the Canes into the 21st century in a few off the field ways. The coaching results and turning Chickillo into a zeppelin...that’s another story.

Actually, the rule is just that they have to be a position coach now, as opposed to previously where they could be hired as support staff or recruiting only roles.

Bama interviewed Surtain Sr for DB coach role. They ended up hiring someone else.

Honestly, if you put Larry Coker or Randy Shannon back in charge of the Hurricanes in 2012 onwards I think that each would have recruited with less success than Golden. Coker had the benefit of recruiting with a recent NC and successful, title contending teams. Shannon had the benefit of being only a couple of years removed from Miami being a title contender. Remove that success from either of them, then allow them to recruit with Miami being six years + away from being relevant - plus an NCAA investigation - and they simply do worse.

Coker's staff used Rivals as a recruiting guide and could not recruit WRs or QBs. Shannon's relationships with S Florida coaches fell apart during his tenure, and he was left with taking a high number of flyers on 3 and 2 star players in his last class (2010) to fill out his roster.

Golden restored relationships with coaches, began numerous high school camps, and used social media. He was a good salesman - it was his strength. Would a few others (Myers, Saban) have done better? Absolutely. But I think Golden did about as well as many coaches would have given the circumstances. What Coker and Shannon did in regards to recruiting doesn't give me much hope that we would have been pulling in Top 5 classes in 2012 and 2013 with either of them at the helm, let alone the classes that Golden was able to secure.

TonyCane

Golden didn’t restore anything. They high school coaches thought he was a clown. They were right.

1mg of Epi

Golden was getting class rankings in bottom of the top 20 at best... and that was due to volume. Golden did as bad as possible for Miami, who will get players every year just due to its location and family ties.

Go Canes!!

If it was that easy then why did Shannon have a grand total of three commits the day he got fired?

At the end of the day probably 80% of our starters this year were his recruits. He may not have been able to coach a lick on game day, but he kept us afloat during the worst thing we've had since Butch.

Last thing I'll say on this cause it doesn't matter anymore. Last three schools to undergo proloned scrutiny from the NCAA are Baylor, UNC and Ole Miss.

Their records this year were 1-10, 2-9 and 5-6. They had 5 wins combined against Power 5 teams. All three of those teams won their division in the years preceding their investigations.

Sorry Go. Go back and read the reports and quotes from the high school coaches after he was fired.

As far as sheppherding the program thru the sanctions.... that’s bullshit. He was blindsided and tried to leave. Other than that he did what anybody else pulling a multi million dollar salary would... his job. (Poorly but he did it)

Terrance Sullivan

Huge win tonight for our Canes over the Cards to go to 15-4. Keep it going Canes. Now need our Women's Canes team to beat the Women's Cards tomorrow afternoon baby.

TonyCane

To be fair, Golden pulled in 6-8 four star players in 2012 - 2015, each class. That’s not the volume needed to pull on par with FSU, but it was on par with Clemson for much of that time and better than what any other team in the ACC was doing.

To be fair to Shannon, his collapse and job security in 2010 caused his class to fall apart. He had more than 3 players committed, but by the time he left it had fallen apart to just two players. That is less about Shannon and more to the change in coaching.

Both Shannon and Golden took chances with a lot of 3 star players. Look at the 2008 class (Shannon’s best) and you’ll see something like 16 of them are 3 and 2 star guys.

Go Canes!!

Posted by: 1mg of Epi | January 24, 2018 at 11:14 PM

Epi his last year here he had Richards, Quartermann, Picnkey, Jackson, Bethel, Allison, Byrd, Mullins and McCloud committed when he got fired.

Guess I look at the dumpster fires a ton of coaches who have everything going for them leave behind and have a hard time saying it was the worst it could have been. I'll just stick to my previous position of him being the best of our worst.

Doesn't matter anyway.

Everyone knows the future of this program will be determined by whatever decision the two CBs from Heritage make.

Furthermore, of all the p*ssy*ss defenses Ive seen at Miami in the last 15 years, his as a HC were arguably the most p*ssy*ss. He lost to teams he shouldnt have constantly and every excuse was made for the guy... 48-0 was on his watch.

Coach Shannon and Coach Golden had their pluses and minuses but at the end of the day are mediocre Non Power 5 Head Coaches at best. Nothing more nothing less. The Fact that neither Coach Shannon or Coach Golden aren't Head coaching another Power 5 school speaks volumes. Preach Furthermore, I put more blame on Athletic Directors because that's primary job hiring and firing coaches, coaches contracts, athletic budgets, sponsorship deals think Adidas, Nike, Under Armor, and naming rights on facilities, and fundraising, season tickets and booster sales. The President is worried about the whole University. Kirby Hocutt the AD during Shannon years and early Golden Years and Shawn Eichorst who was the AD during Golden years at least for 18 months. Just go back to September 2012 and our Athletic Program was in Dire Straights. Blake James takes over and look at our Athletic Program now in a little over 5 years and its one of the better programs going.

Switching gears real quick, nice win last night for the Canes men's basketball team. Any win is nice, but there were some areas of concern that continue to linger.

Walker (25 points) and Huell (18 points) were magnificent, but the others struggled on offense with missed shots and turnovers. The Canes defense seems to be solid, but the Canes have a lot of work to do on offense. IMO, too much dribbling and the dribbler creating his own shots. Not enough assists and ball movement. Still, it was great to see that the Canes found a way to get a win against a very good Louisville team in overtime at the WATCO Center.

Up next, FSU on Saturday.

48-0 was bad, but not worse than losing to Clemson 58-0, and certainly not worse than losing to Clemson & UNC by a total score of 117-21.

Golden's 15' team was waaaaay better than RS's 07' team.

TonyCane

RCCF, what donthe old players say (in general)? I love inside books like “Shark Amongst Dolphins” or “Cane Mutiny” that really go into the behind the scenes. My opinions are based on what I have available...would love to hear some insight on what the players thought (or experienced) with Shannon, Golden, and Coker.

Some questions I would have:
- Was it simply the quality of Shannon’s staff that hindered player development when he was HC?
- Did the UM admin view Randy as a caretaker?
- Why did Coker fail to recruit wide receivers and running backs
- Was what Feliciano and Duke’s Mom said accurate about Golden...IE did we really play Stephen Morris with a partially torn Achilles?
- Did Golden know about Shapiro when hired (the story was already out in the Sun Sentinel weeks before he was hired)
- How close to Golden get to jumping to Penn State

While both teams had enough talent on O to score more than 0 points, Golden's 15' team had waaaaay more talent. And the talent Golden had on D should've given up less than 58.

It was Miami's first home shutout loss since Oct. 4, 1974 against Auburn, and the Hurricanes' worst defeat since losing 66-13 at Syracuse on Nov. 28, 1998. The last time Miami lost by more points at home was in 1944, when Texas A&M beat the Hurricanes 70-14.

All that on sacred grounds, at night on national TV, five years after playing for the title.

IIIIIDGAD if they played in front of The Vatican, 58-0 is worse than 48-0, especially in your 118th game as a HC.

Go Canes!!

No, it’s not.

CaneRock

Yes, it is.

Even your cherry-picked ESPN article doesn't describe it as the worst loss in UM history.

According to that blurb, that 58-0 drubbin' was the worst losing margin in UM history...shutout or otherwise.

Golden was historically bad.

Great band.

The 48-0 loss to UVA was the ONLY game I ever walked out early. I would have jumped from the Miami River Bridge while walking back to my car but people held me back. It was the worst ever.

The 58-0 Clemson loss was a favor.

The 48-0 UVA loss was a killer.

LOL...Solar was clairvoyant:

My observation is Shannon should take a long look at how Mark Richt coaches Georgia.

Those players are loose and play above their ability every game.
They don't fear getting yanked or benched every snap.

The HC is smiling during the game, even when they make a mistake he looks at them and shrugs his shoulders rather than intimidate them into their next fiasco.
If you intimidate players all week they will play like beaten dogs on Saturday.

Sat in the parking lot for 45 minutes after trying to figure out how we’d fallen so far so fast. It was horrible.

Only silver lining was at that point even security had packed it up and the stadium was still lit so we just walked back in and spent an hour taking pictures and throwing the football around on the field.

One of the best Canes moments for me ever after one of the toughest losses ever.

Oui

My identity was gone.

I was humiliated and ashamed.

I didn't even want to drink.

I just wanted to sulk.

That is how bad it was.

But if you read between the lines of Solar's post, He was basically saying that Shannon lost that team. And once a coach loses a team, very little chance He'll ever be able to hold a team together. Happened with Erickson, Coker, Shannon, & Golden.

Ivins just posted this article

American Heritage Scoop
There's no question that some folks in Coral Gables think that things are trending up with five-star cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr. and trending down a bit with five-star cornerback Tyson Campbell. A trusted source said that the Hurricanes were somewhat surprised to see Surtain Jr. on campus last week for the men's basketball game against Duke, but at the same time not all that shocked as the U.S. Army All-American has been very receptive to recent conversations with Mike Rumph.

Both Rumph and Manny Diaz conducted an in-home visit with the Surtain family on Wednesday night. The buzz coming out of that meeting is that the Hurricanes will likely get Surtain Jr. on campus for an official visit the weekend before National Signing Day although that date isn't exactly locked in yet. One thing to note however is that Kerry Coombs (Surtain's primary recruiter at Ohio State) just accepted an NFL job which might take the Buckeyes out the running for an official visit in these final two weeks.

As for Campbell the folks at UM still remain optimistic. The plan as of early Wednesday morning is for the U.S. Army All-American to be on campus the weekend of Feb. 2 with his parents. Miami has saved the in-home visit with Mark Richt for next week and one contact connected to the recruitment thinks that could play a huge factor in the decision process. Remember last cycle Kai-Leon Herbert was dead-set on signing with Michigan until Richt sat in his living room and changed his mind. Georgia continues to feel good about where things stand.

Those close to Top300 linebacker/defensive end Andrew Chatfield believe that he remains torn between Miami and Florida. The good news however might be the fact that both of his parents want him at UM. Some also think that Ja'Juan Seider's decision to leave Dan Mullen's staff could ultimately swing things in favor of the Hurricanes as he was heavily involved in Chatfield's recruitment. Which also might be the case when it comes to Nesta Silvera. The Top100 defensive tackle spent this past weekend in Gainesville, but we have yet to hear anything that suggests he's wavering on his verbal pledge to Miami. He's expected to join Campbell in Coral Gables next weekend. We heard that Rumph and Diaz got plenty of face time with mom at AMH on Wednesday.

Dumbo and the Gator coach this year too.

There's something about closing out the Orange Bowl with a historic loss like that. Yes, the Clemson loss was worse in terms of score, and it also showed that a partially rebuilt Canes squad in 2015 was nowhere close to what was on paper a similar Clemson team.

Oddly, while I can't wait to see Clemson lose to Miami in the future - repeatedly - I feel differently about Virginia. The Cavaliers are on The List of Woe, much like Ohio State. Miami could beat them 48-0 nothing for the next decade and it would only partially salve the sting of that loss.

His Royal Dudeness

Has the new redshirt rule been passed? When is it voted on?

So who is it really that we’re supposed to be upset at for losing a recruit? The primary recruiter whose territory the recruit resides in? The position coach? Or the head coach, whose the closer? We have two recruits still in play because the primary recruiter has left their program, and we are looking for Richt to close...
