The University of Miami baseball team checked in at No. 24 in the USA TODAY Sports Top 25 baseball preseason coaches' poll released Thursday.
The top-25 ranking is Miami's third of the preseason; the Hurricanes were ranked No. 20 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper in December and No. 9 by Perfect Game earlier in January.
Miami added a recruiting class ranked No. 8 nationwide by Baseball America to a group of 15 returning letterwinners from a 2017 team that finished 31-27 overall and 16-13 in ACC play.
The Hurricanes will be led by infielder Romy Gonzalez (11 home runs, 38 RBI), lefthander and All-ACC ace Jeb Bargfeldt (7-3, 2.28 ERA) and impressive reliever Andrew Cabezas (2.15 ERA, 80 strikeouts). Other returning veterans include outfielder Michael Burns (four home runs, 32 RBI), righthander Greg Veliz (3.38 ERA, 66 strikeouts) and reliever Frankie Bartow (12 saves).
Two members of Miami's recruiting class were selected in the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft; righthanded pitcher Chris McMahon was taken by Milwaukee in the 33rd round while infielder Ray Gil was picked in the 37th round by Oakland. McMahon (No. 76), first baseman Alex Toral(No. 199), outfielder Gabe Rivera (No. 329) and first baseman Connor Allen (No. 440) were all ranked among Baseball America's top 500 draft-eligible prospects.
Miami opens its 25th and final season under the direction of head coach Jim Morris on Feb. 16 with the opener of a three-game series against Rutgers (Feb. 16-18).
The Hurricanes' home schedule also includes series with Florida (Feb. 23-25), Notre Dame (March 9-11), Virginia (March 23-25), North Carolina (April 6-8) and Boston College (May 17-19), among others.
Miami's road schedule includes trip to Georgia Tech (March 30 - April 1), Clemson (April 13-15) and Florida State (April 27-29).

Miami set to add David Cooney to support staff

Support staff isn’t a coaching position

Offensive Quality Control Analyst?
Well... I guess it's better than NO Offensive help... CERTAINLY NOT an Offensive COORDINATOR.
This Cooney guy will probably not really have much power... Can you imagine telling the BOSS that hired you that his Offensive play-calling philosophy sucks eggs?

Uhhhh Hello Guys....
Cooney was hired last year lol, where were U guys??

Just you wait, if Perry is the 2nd coming of Andrew Luck, the offense will look decent.

Think Alabama in the first half of the NC game compared to the 2nd.
How putrid did they look at halftime? Overthrows, inconsistency running the ball, scrambles leading to throw aways.
Second half the new kid ran the offense and made throws all over the field.
Same OC, same players but they found someone who could do all they wanted s done.
Haven’t had that here, last tee or the year before.

Tua wasnt that good. He was bailed out by Ridley on a terrible throw into the endzone. He was this close to a game killing turnover.
Posted by: His Royal Dudeness | January 27, 2018 at 12:02 PM
He was 14-24 for 166 and 3 TDs in one half.
Give me not that good all next season

I want an OL that gives us 10 wins. You add an exceptional QB to that and youve got a chance. Next year is critical, we need another really solid year winning the Coastal and finishing top 10. Our recruiting class must answer every positions depth from then on. Its a process but we are firmly on that road. 2019 is the year we can make some real noise.

Good teams find a way to win the tuff games, something we are still working on. I want us to be better than good. Good teams find a way to lose to the Pitt’s of the world, better teams find a way to win, even when they stink! My expectations have always been high, even in our darkest hours. We have out recruited 80 percent of this conference, the last 10 years but because of lamebrain coaching and average qb play, we have been mediocre at best.

Posted by: Herbieibis | January 27, 2018 at 07:44 PM
We arent so good that we can expect to win on a bad day against a motivated opponent. We are on our way there though, of course we need to see how DT recruiting goes.
Posted by: His Royal Dudeness | January 27, 2018 at 07:55 PM
I see where we are offering a 2 star DT. My, somethings never change. You Are relegated to low level talent, when u don’t plan ahead, that or another one year wonder grad student.
Posted by: Herbieibis | January 27, 2018 at 08:07 PM
So Tua's numbers were good???
But I'd rather hate on a man that finally beat fsu after 7 straight losses. Let's not forget that we ain't been chit in 15yrs and this is the best season we've had... but let's keep complaining lol

Posted by: WWIN | January 27, 2018 at 08:27 PM
Guys, let the Herb interject for just one minute. Rosier, although average at best, isn’t an above average qb. He’s a bridge nothing more. Look, i’ll Give him the FSU and G. Tech miracles but as a passer he stinks. A 4th year JR. and he is as erratic as he was the first day on campus. Tua, comes off the bench, Ice freaking cold and is told to sic em Dano. Dude threw a frozen rope 40 yds to win the ship. One flipping half of a game and Rosier has had 14 starts and still can’t throw it in the ocean, if it were in front of him. Start the a freshmen and let Rosey come off the bench. We ain’t winning no ship next year, so play the frosh and let them get experience. If Mac and Norton had come back and had Johnson had not flown the Coop, I might think otherwise.

Posted by: Herbieibis | January 27, 2018 at 09:04 PM
Even if Rosier completely wins the job, throws 62% for the season, 3,000 yards, 25 TDs and only 5 INTs, that boy Perry is getting reps.
Posted by: His Royal Dudeness | January 27, 2018 at 09:10 PM
Yeah, unless he’ dumb as nails. He himself he wasn’t ready, this past year. His mindset wasn’t right. It better be this year.

Posted by: Herbieibis | January 27, 2018 at 09:15 PM
No big time program in America can have a blue chip QB with his mind wrong in its 2nd year, not when you are relying on him. You cant be a Randy Shannon and just throw a kid into a doghouse until he figures it out, you have to make sure he gets it. I think Richt understands that.
Posted by: His Royal Dudeness | January 27, 2018 at 09:18 PM
Posted by: WWIN | January 27, 2018 at 08:27 PM
Totally a failing grade I’m sure. And he didn’t even have his offensive lineman fall down.
Posted by: Go Canes!! | January 27, 2018 at 09:36 PM
Herbi,
There is nothing you can say that will make Willie admit Nosier is basura (GARBAGE). He knows... We all saw what it was.
Nosier is to Willie what Golden was to Go Canes. He can have that.

It's football. The ultimate team sport. Not tennis or golf. No QB, not even Brady wins by themself.
The TEAM beat FSU and Notre Dame. Nosier helped a little bit. You know what it is...
