The University of Miami baseball team checked in at No. 24 in the USA TODAY Sports Top 25 baseball preseason coaches' poll released Thursday.
The top-25 ranking is Miami's third of the preseason; the Hurricanes were ranked No. 20 by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper in December and No. 9 by Perfect Game earlier in January.
Miami added a recruiting class ranked No. 8 nationwide by Baseball America to a group of 15 returning letterwinners from a 2017 team that finished 31-27 overall and 16-13 in ACC play.
The Hurricanes will be led by infielder Romy Gonzalez (11 home runs, 38 RBI), lefthander and All-ACC ace Jeb Bargfeldt (7-3, 2.28 ERA) and impressive reliever Andrew Cabezas (2.15 ERA, 80 strikeouts). Other returning veterans include outfielder Michael Burns (four home runs, 32 RBI), righthander Greg Veliz (3.38 ERA, 66 strikeouts) and reliever Frankie Bartow (12 saves).
Two members of Miami's recruiting class were selected in the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft; righthanded pitcher Chris McMahon was taken by Milwaukee in the 33rd round while infielder Ray Gil was picked in the 37th round by Oakland. McMahon (No. 76), first baseman Alex Toral(No. 199), outfielder Gabe Rivera (No. 329) and first baseman Connor Allen (No. 440) were all ranked among Baseball America's top 500 draft-eligible prospects.
Miami opens its 25th and final season under the direction of head coach Jim Morris on Feb. 16 with the opener of a three-game series against Rutgers (Feb. 16-18).
The Hurricanes' home schedule also includes series with Florida (Feb. 23-25), Notre Dame (March 9-11), Virginia (March 23-25), North Carolina (April 6-8) and Boston College (May 17-19), among others.
Miami's road schedule includes trip to Georgia Tech (March 30 - April 1), Clemson (April 13-15) and Florida State (April 27-29).

Too bad for Bruce Brown and his latest injury. I hope he gets better and has a full recovery. I also hope that Brown returns next season, but I understand if he cannot.
I am interested to see how the Canes and Coach L adjust to playing without Bruce Brown at this stage in the season. Walker is rounding into form, and Lykes and Newton need to play more PG. The Canes will need to step up and play much better on a consistent basis if the Canes are going to be a force going down the stretch.

SBNation good story and observation on why Miami has basically whiffed on the D-Line. Said coach Kul is probably the best D-Line coach in America, recruiting may not be his strong suit. Mentioned Partridge as coming in as a 10 coach (Lb) and being the lead recruiter on the DL. Their has to be a problem with us having all kinds of playing time available after all the departures, for the reason for us not being a top destination. The article did say that the overall talent in the state this year at the DL position wasn’t great but had plenty of secondary type players that could be productive down the road. Mentioned also, the last several years theirs always one position Miami tends to whiff on.
The Herb says this, with more than 25 ships available we shouldn’t whiff at any position. In other words don’t put off tomorrow what you can get done today. It has been the WR’S, then the RB’S, then the CB’S and now the DL. We got to get the ball rolling and not have to keep waiting until next year. At this rate we will never get to the top. The heck with being up one year and down the next.

I would promise PS2 & Campbell that for the 1st snap the defense takes, they will be the starting CBs to take the field, so they can show out a little bit, lol. They got to earn everything else.

If what I've read about Campbell's parents ages is true, I think He's more of a lock than Surtain. I'm 44 Y/O and I don't like driving more than 10 miles at night, so I can only imagine being AARP age and driving from Miramar to Athens & back.
Unle💰💰, the Campbells "my💰teriou💰ly" get like one million frequent flyer miles and/or a "real 💰weet" deal on 💰ome real e💰tate in Athens.
