Freshman guard Lonnie Walker IV scored a team-high 16 points to pace the University of Miami men's basketball team to a 69-57 win over Pittsburgh Wednesday night at the Watsco Center.
Walker's 16-point output marked the sixth straight game he has scored in double figures and the 10th time he has done so this year.
Joining Walker in double figures was freshman Chris Lykes, sophomore Dewan Huell and junior Anthony Lawrence II, as they finished with 13, 11 and 10 points respectively.
Lawrence also chipped in with 10 rebounds to record his first career double-double. Lykes also starred running the point for the Hurricanes, as he dished out five assists to tie a career-best.
As a team, the Hurricanes held a commanding 39-24 advantage on the boards and held a 32-24 edge in points in the paint.
With the win, Miami improved to 16-5 overall and 8-1 at home.
The Hurricanes took command early in the first half, as it led by double-digits for nearly half of the opening 20 minutes and never trailed. Miami took a 34-25 lead into the break. Sophomore DJ Vasiljevic led all Hurricane scorers with eight points, connecting on a pair 3-pointers.
Miami came out of the locker room and continued their strong play by opening up a 13-point lead with just under 16 minutes to go in the game.
The Panthers responded in a big way as they went on a 14-0 run and held the Hurricanes without a field goal for over six minutes to take a 44-43 advantage with 10:43 to go in the game. Pitt's one-point advantage was their first lead of the game.
The Hurricanes stopped the Panthers run thanks to seven straight points from Walker, who connected on a pair of free throws, a layup and a deep 3-pointer to give Miami a comfortable 50-44 lead with 9:15 to go.
Miami's defense tightened over the next six and half minutes, as the Hurricanes held Pitt to just a pair of field goals and opened up a 14-point advantage with 2:34 to go in the game.
Miami returns to action on Saturday (Feb. 3), as it heads to Blacksburg, Va., to take on Virginia Tech. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.

And there’s been a big change in fortunes among the three Power 5 schools in the state.
Florida’s class never ranked outside the top five of the class rankings during Urban Meyer’s final five seasons in Gainesville, and he landed the top overall class in 2006 and 2010. The quality dropped slightly under Will Muschamp, who averaged the sixth-rated class. Then the Gators failed to crack the top 10 in three seasons under Jim McElwain, and Dan Mullen’s first class currently ranks 18th.
That drop-off led to Florida State taking over the state under Jimbo Fisher. The Seminoles had the top overall class in 2011 and 2016, and ranked among the top 10 classes in each of his eight seasons in Tallahassee. But with Fisher off to Texas A&M, Willie Taggart is playing catch-up and Florida State’s class currently ranks 30th.
That opens the door for Miami, which currently has the No. 7 class in the country. That would be tied for the Hurricanes' second-highest ranking in 13 years of ESPN Recruiting, trailing only their 2008 class, which was tops in the country.
The Hurricanes have been dominating the state, gaining commitments from 10 of the 60 ESPN 300 players from Florida. Miami is in line to land the most ESPN 300 recruits from Florida for the second time in three seasons under Mark Richt.
In fact, the Hurricanes have twice as many ESPN 300 commitments from Florida as the Gators and Seminoles combined. Florida State currently has only two such commitments; eight schools, including six from out of state, have more than that.

- Guess that guy named Mike Rumph has Nothing to do with these numbers and Nothing to do with the production level
- Funny Everyone is praising the Crootin' trail for the U, but the Fans see otherwise... Sure, I agree w/the Article from yesterday stating that we should go after Every DL in state Period! Kool needs to focus more on Development than Crootin'..

Good article. The Canes need to continue to press for the advantage in recruiting Florida. There are plenty of recruits to go around, but recruits love to gravitate toward success, and the Canes are the most successful program. Although I think Taggert and Mullins will turn things around, I am not sure if they will catch up to the Canes any time soon.

Overall 2018 has looked like a very weak class for interior linemen and even DEs in South Florida or even Florida overall
There doesn't appear to be a Jackson, Garvin or Ford down here that got away to anywhere else or am I missing something?

Im gonna say this 1 last time and maybe it will resonate with some of U.. Mike Rumph is Good Enough ... whether those 2 come or not is not a slight on Rumph's skills at all... how do you guys and gals do this math anyway? so in your math class coach Kool SUCKS because we can't get a DL to save our lives.. Pretty Dumb when you think about it huh? Please save your thumb muscles disrespecting coaches when you don't have the slightest clue what he is doing nor what he has done... Lastly, I guess nobody sees it funny that the word/name "Bully" always comes up when describing Nesta Silvera... he is the Leader of that Crew and if he says they go to the U and build the city guess what they are gonna do? U sell those boys on the Turnover Chain and the chance to be the reason the City is back on the map.. They don't take that then we are good Anyway.. CANES DON'T BEG... 12%

American Heritage five-star cornerbackPatrick Surtain Jr.will pick between four schools onNational Signing Day.
“I narrowed it down and I’m getting closer to making my decision,” Surtain Jr. told 247Sports on Thursday.
The finalists?
LSU, Miami, Clemson and Alabama.
The Tigers sent defensive coordinatorDave Arandaand defensive backs coachCorey Raymondto Surtain Jr.’s school early Thursday morning.Ed Orgeronwill join the two later in the day when they meet with the family.
“It means a lot just for them to be here on the in-home visit. I’m very comfortable with them. I have been going there since my freshman year. The comfortability level is high. I feel like they have a great chance.”
Miami head coachMark Richt, cornerbacks coachMike Rumphand the rest of the Hurricanes defensive staff sat down with Surtain Jr. and his parents on Wednesday. The U.S. Army All-American says there’s a number of reasons why UM remains in the mix to land his signature.
“Just the spirit they that have and how they are changing the program there. Coach Richt is doing a great job. His plan for me, I love that plan. I have that relationship with Coach Rumph also. He just said that I could make a big impact just by coming it would probably help bring The U back.”
Surtain Jr. was also impressed with how Coach Richt explained hisrelationship with his players.
"He's great coach. He told me a lot of things that I didn’t know about him as far as his spirit level with the players and what he does for them.”
Thesenior will spend theupcomingweekend in Coral Gables on an official visit.
“I need to see more of the school and more of the environment around the campus because I have only really been in the football facilities,” he said when asked what he’s looking forward to on the trip.
Before Surtain Jr. makes the short drive down I-95 he will meet with coaches from both Alabama and Clemson.
“They stand pretty high," Surtain Jr. said of the Crimson Tide. "They have a great team and a great plan for me.They are telling me basically that I have a great opportunity there because they are losing 6 DBs. They are saying that I could come in and play a great role and contribute to helping them win a championship.”
Surtain Jr. was at one time beingrecruited byDerrick Ansleyto Alabama. When asked if Ansley'sdecision to leave Tuscaloosa for the Oakland Raiders will play afactor in hisdecision, he said that not much has changed.
“At first it did, but I know the new DB coach and I sort of have a good relationship with him.”
Which is also the case when it comes to Clemson'sDabo Swinney.
Surtain Jr. was in Death Valley last weekend with mom. He said that the Tigers made it clear that he's wanted.
“I haven’t been there much, but just being there you can tell that Coach Swinney is obviously doing a great job over there and I respect him for what he’s doing over there because it’s a little bit different how he develops his player.”
Surtain Jr. isn't sure whenhe will sit down and make a final decision with his parents, but noted that he has yet to tell anyprogram where he's going.
“Whatever school I feel comfortable playing at and whatever school feels like a family atmosphere – that's where I'm going”
Surtain Jr. (6-1.5, 199) is ranked by 247Sports as the nation's No. 1 cornerback this cycle.
