You said:

I am thinking Miami might be lower upper rung or at the very least middle rung...:

But I did not mean to trigger you. Again.

Go Canes!!

The one thing I loathe about this time of year is the fixation some people have with the couple of undecided recruits still out there.

We have a consensus Top 5 class that has arguably top 2-3 at their position nationally at RB, TE and WR. They are signed, sealed and delivered.

Frierson, Mallory and Blades are beasts. Hightower, Scaife and Davis are super elite. This class is rock solid across the board, with Top 10 players at their position everywhere.

CMR and his staff have done serious work. Now all of a sudden to some it's a failure because the two Heritage kids decide to sign elsewhere.

Some kids just don't want to stay home. Some kids don't like UM. Some kids take money. Some kids pick schools because they grew up idolizing a certain player.

What we can ask, and they have done, is for our coaches to get elite kids at every position. They are doing it big time.

Refuse to make it all about this year's Tyler Byrd, CJ Henderson or Jerry Jeudy.

We've got a monster class and will certainly add to it down the stretch. Won't let 1-2 guys who go elsewhere ruin that.

Sinister will be burning his redshirt by the third series of the LSU game.

It’s only natural to be upset when a blue chipper flirts with your program and goes somewhere else. These are the players we need to compete even for the ACC ship... clempson showed us that.

I just don’t know if I’d go calling for coaches to be fired on the heels of signing the #6 class.

Terrance Sullivan

We need to keep signing top 10 classes annually coach them up and we will be in the mic annually to win titles including the National Championship. Sorry 86 for dropping F bombs. My bad.

Herbieibis

I’ll say this once and I’ll say it again would u want a guy that played several years in pro football coaching u or someone who hasn’t but is a good recruiter because sooner or later the cream will rise to the top. Half the coaches coaching got their start coaching high school football. Rumph has been here 2 years, plus we haven’t had much depth at all at cb. Last year we brought in one freshman cb, Bandy! Richt is as much the blame for our lack of recruiting certain positions on the defensive side of the ball. The way we’ve played the last 10 years, it’s not like we are the flavor of the month, YET, but I do see them taste buds changing. We keep winning and everything will take care of it’s self. Getting our qb situation will be a start and stock piling more talent on DEE is next.
Bama puts all those superstars in the league but how many of them are perennial all pros? Last time I looked LSU hadn’t one but one Ship in the last 50 years.

of the top 5 backs w the lowest QBR when targeted, 3 are canes. He seems to be a good coach. If he can’t recruit then that’s a problem, but If I’m forced to choose I’ll take a good coach over a good recruiter. That was my takeaway from golden.

In the ACC^^

BigWindyCane1

Rumph is a good coach, and I love our current D.B. class. The Canes currently have a top 3 DB class. I would rather talk about the great D.B. commits we have signed already, rather than a few undecided recruits. UGA and Bama have good coaches, but they also have a lot of glam, glitter and good car salesmen (especially Saban’s used car salesmen). When young kids get around used car salesmen, they tend to not make the best decisions.

I have some opinions about PS1 and Campbell (some I have already shared), but I will reserve additional comments until after NSD.

How do you feel about the Patriots QB coach? If it wasn't for him what would Brady be?

Herbieibis

Losing either one of those guys would suck but they aren’t the first and they won’t be the last we don’t get that are star quality. Losing games to nobodies like Pitt has to cease, this doesn’t do wonders for us on the recruiting trail, plus losing 3 in a row. All the mo we had went right down the shitter. We’re crawling now but we have to before can walk!

So UM average is 8.5-4.5 the last 5 years.

I think the fair comparison for a recruit is Richt's record at Miami, which is 9.5 wins per season.

Herbieibis

Tony,
I must be the opposite of that. The first 4 games I ever saw the Canes play, three in football and one in baseball they lost. Now I have rallied some but ever time I’ve watched them but twice they have sucked on offense. Both games this year UNC and Clemson they stunk!

Go Canes!!

We need quantity of quality.

There’s a lot of work still left to be done.

If any of our backs the last 2 years turn out to be NFL HOFers I will take the L. And nail it to my forehead.

But in one breath u say Rumph is a good coach and in the next u insinuate he is not.... the question is whether he is a good enough recruiter to be on the staff. I don’t think it’s fair to bury him based on 1 guy. He’s got some good players in to this point. Also, he’s not the only guy recruiting these guys.

Correction: my favorite QB was not Kaaya or Ryan Williams, but was Gray Crow. If Golden played my man, Gray Crow, he would have won more games. Golden didn’t like Crow at all.

Gray Crow was the only Golden QB to donate $5k to the IPF. Crow is all Canes

Crow to Jones for 6!

BigWindy, I was always partial to Ryan Clement. Outside of Dan Marino, I have never seen a more fiery quarterback on the field.

86Cane

If only people knew and respected the history of this blog like MOST do we could ALL just get along!

His Royal Dudeness

Rumph is responsible for about 8 scholarships. Thats not too much to ask for, from a 1st time position coach. Rumph's recruiting problems didnt start this year. His 1st year, he only brought in Malek Young, his next year he only brought in Trajan Bandy. Now Malek is hurt and so weve only got 1 CB for the last 2 cycles and now we have a numbers problem. As for 2018, he needed 3 minimum, thats 2 freshmen to get playing time and 1 to RS, this is the first year he has ever delivered the NUMBERS we need. Next year, we need to land a freshman who can play right away with Bethel, and another kid to redshirt minimum. That's what building depth from the bottom up looks like. Now, if in 2019, you get 2 freshman that can play right away, then you can take a 3rd to redshirt also.

Now lets talk coaching. His guys Bandy & Young... he's done well. Golden's guys: Elder, Colbert & Jackson... he's done well there also. Look at the CBs he groomed in HS, 6'1" and fast as hell... kind of like the guys he's bringing in this cycle & the guys he trued to bring in last year. I think Rumph has a plan.

Campbell & Surtain Jr.: It is a failure any time Miami fails to sign 5* local talents. That said there are a lot of reasons why we aren't getting those kids these days, reasons that took 15 years to create and will probably take a couple more years to fix. I am constantly dumbfounded by the lack of self-awareness our fan base has. We just suffered 5 years through the worst coach in Miami (maybe CF) history, did another 5 with Randy Shannon after losing all of our winning culture under Coker. We fell as far as Miami could possibly fall and still have a chance at coming out of the other side.

His Royal Dudeness

I think if we can hit a) Win the Coastal & b) Win 10 games again, Miami will see another truly deep class. Surge 19 is hopefully the last time we have to patch holes, (OT). That set up a beautiful 2020 season where we run the table to the ACC title game where we have the QB to win it and we are finally in the playoffs. Storm 18 players will be SO & *FR, & Perry will be a *SO. 2021 we will have our pick of SoFL's litter again, except unlike 2008, it will be an addition to an already great roster. Coach hires are key from now until then, Manny will probably be offered another DC job or an HC job. 2020 is the first time I think we'll have a realistic shot. 2021 is the 1st time we'll start top 5 and look loaded and back. We are hitting all of the check marks so far. Thats my opinion.

P.S. DVD shouts out at Campbell, and some d*ckhead "fan" tweets some trash like, "If Rumph doesnt land you he could be fired." Is that who we are? Do better out there Canes fam.

We could have fallen a lot farther.

I know it’s easy to rip Golden, and there are a ton of reasons to, but he left CMR a pretty damn good nucleus of players. He also could have loaded up the roster with non Miami caliber guys just to fill spaces, which he didn’t.

Herbieibis

Yeah he also filled up the roster with bunch of FIU type talent too, to fill gaps and now we’ve had a bunch of them running out of here like rats. The hell withtalking about that spineless wonder. Who coaches for almost 5 years at a School and you mediocre at best and fire no one?
Now to this Rumph bashing, the dudes been on the job right at 2 years. Malik Young followed Richt from Georgia. I don’t know if Richt had hired right after signing day or right before but it doesn’t matter. This would be the second full class he has been a part of. Did Duggins bring Jerry Juedy in last year. To say that a coach is failing, not getting kids to come here, is not all on him. Up until the last 2 years look at the product in the field, it would make me dam queasy about playing here. Hell we’re still losing to teams that shouldn’t be on the field with us but we are improving our recruiting and Richt has brought the excitement back but those Golden Boy 5 Stars, no matter where their from still shun us. Yeah will get one every year or 2 but they ain’t flocking.
Somebody mention Brady, where would he be had been drafted by any other team? I doubt we would be talking about him.

BigWindyCane1

Think you should look at how many of our best players and starters the last two years were left here or committed to Golden before you make such a grandiose proclamation.

Like I’ve said before. He couldn’t coach on game day but he left us in pretty decent shape considering what this program had been though during his time here.

BigWindyCane1

Campbell is like a lot of 18 year old kids, who make decisions. Sometimes those decisions are good decisions, but oftentimes they are not the best decisions in the long run. Plus, UM has never really had a pipeline from American Heritage, and I think there are reasons for that. I will not get into again today.

Rumph was not hired by CMR to recruit and keep a pipeline to American Heritage kids. CMR has never hired coaches to create a pipeline from one school, otherwise, IMG Academy's coaches would be in high demand at every major college.

Rumph was hired because he can coach and develop kids, and he also has shown that he can recruit locally and nationally.

Rumph recruited Young and Bandy (who have contributed early), but he also recruited a graduate transfer Colbert, who was not playing at all at the University of Texas, and after one year under Rumph, Colbert was drafted and is now playing in the NFL.

Jackson didn't play much when he arrived in 2015, but now Jackson will eventually get drafted and play in the NFL someday. J. Dean was also recruited out of Junior college, and several major programs wanted him. Dean wasn't ready, but he still has another year so his story isn't over.

And the current recruits coming in are very good, and will eventually contribute in a major way.

I like Rumph, but he (and the entire UM staff) will face an uphill battle any time a local recruit is getting attention from teams that are routinely in the CFP, like Alabama and OSU. 18-year old kids will make decisions, and those decisions will not always make sense to middle aged adults.

Thanks, GC. I am not sure if this post deserves it, but I just want to be fair to the coaches. Coaching is not easy, and that is why coaches make millions to develop programs. The Canes coaches obviously are not perfect, but they are the best group of coaches the Canes have had in nearly two decades.

And to judge a coach's entire body of work based on the decisions made by two 18-year olds?
