Freshman Gabe Rivera's first collegiate hit came on a two-run home run, but it wasn't enough for the visiting Hurricanes, who fell to Georgia Tech, 13-4, at Russ Chandler Stadium Saturday.
Miami fell victim to a four-run third inning to face an early deficit, as the host Yellow Jackets captured Game 2 of a weekend ACC series.
The Hurricanes will look to salvage the series Sunday at 1 p.m. with junior Andrew Cabezas on the hill.
Head coach Jim Morris, who spent 12 seasons as head coach at Georgia Tech prior to joining the Hurricanes, was honored during pregame ceremonies with a commemorative bat presented by Yellow Jackets head coach Danny Hall.
But his team's bats could not solve Georgia Tech lefthander Connor Thomas until Rivera – who entered in the previous half-inning as a defensive replacement - cracked a one-out pitch well over the left field wall in the seventh.
Rivera became the second Hurricane to record a home run for his first collegiate hit this season; fellow freshman Alex Toral did it opening weekend against Rutgers in mid-February.
The Hurricanes made things interesting when freshman Isaac Quinones cracked a two-RBI double to left off reliever Jared Datoc in the eighth inning to cut the deficit to 7-4, but that was as close as they'd get.
Georgia Tech added six runs of insurance in the eighth to seal the win.
Who's still up?

Berrios drops a 4.35 40 on them today.
Damn, that’s a number.

CGNC, remember when we predicted Berrios would take the next step before last season?
Kid is all Cane and will have a long productive career in the league. Wes Walker with more speed? He is an nfl oc’s Wet dream in the slot.
Go, you were right about not overusing Herndon with too many catches. When he went down, the wheels feel off. Berrios could have helped us with short routes as Malik’s first read, but that isn’t Richt’s style. A little more creativity in the run and short passing game would make Richt a mini version of Saban.

NFL UNVEILS RADICAL NEW SAFETY RULES
CANTON, OH (UT)
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell unveiled a series of new safety initiatives that have shaken the professional football world to it's core. The most fundamental alteration is that players will now be required to walk, and that any speed above a "brisk pace" would result in a 15 yard penalty and substantial fine. Additionally, uniforms would now be encased with "omni-padding", a new invention from South Florida that contains pockets of air within sheets of plastic. Finally, much as celebrations were deemed unworthy of the game, touchdowns themselves will now be done away with. Field goals will now be the sole means of scoring, and any games that are tied at the end of a game will remain tied. "We have to compete with soccer," said Goodell on the last point. "Fans of that sport thrill to the drama of low scores and even tied scores, and we must step up our game to ensure that we can overtake what I would call 'real football'."

Gurvan Hall injured out for the remainder of spring
Posted by: TJL | March 31, 2018 at 04:11 PM
Damn.
Really wanted him to have a good spring.
We need more physical play from the safety position. Is Knowles a hitter? Cause he sure as hell couldn’t cover last season.
