Here is a quick summary of the Miami Hurricanes sports happenings for the week of April 22-29...
FOOTBALL: Six Miami Hurricanes were selected in the 2018 NFL Draft, which took place April 26-28 at AT&T Stadium.
The Cleveland Browns selected defensive lineman Chad Thomas in the third round (67th overall). Tight end Christopher Herndon (New York Jets, 107th overall) and running back Mark Walton (Cincinnati Bengals, 112thoverall) went in the fourth round. The New York Giants selected defensive lineman RJ McIntosh in the fifth round with the 139th overall pick. Wide receiver Braxton Berrios went to the defending AFC Champion New England Patriots in the sixth round (210th overall), while defensive lineman Kendrick Norton was selected by the Carolina Panthers in the seventh round (242nd overall).
FACT: Miami has produced 12 tight ends that have been drafted by the NFL since 2000.
BASEBALL: Miami drops first two games of series to rival Florida State in Tallahassee.
Miami dropped Game 2 of its annual rivalry series with Florida State Saturday night, falling to No. 14 Florida State, 10-1, at Dick Howser Stadium. Sophomore righthander Evan McKendry allowed just two earned runs and struck out nine, but Miami's offense could not solve Florida State righthander C.J. Van Eyk, who impressed on the hill.
McKendry scattered six hits and three walks in a 105-pitch effort before departing in front of 5,356 fans. Freshman Raymond Gil connected on his second home run of the season in the loss. The Seminoles (31-13, 13-9 ACC) struck for unearned runs in the first and third to take an early 2-0 lead. They padded to the lead with six runs in the final two innings.
The series concludes with game 3 today at 1 PM.
FACT: Miami's record now stands at 17-25 on the season and the Hurricanes are 10-13 in the ACC.
TENNIS: Miami's impressive showing in ACC tourney ended by #1 seeded Duke.
The fourth-seeded University of Miami women's tennis team saw its seven-match winning streak end Saturday in the ACC Championship semifinals at Cary Tennis Park. No. 15 Miami (16-7, 11-3 ACC) dropped a 4-1 decision to top-seeded and third-ranked Duke, which was the last team to beat the Hurricanes back on March 25.
"You can't start playing tennis when you're down, 5-0, not on this stage. So, if you don't loosen up and start playing until you're down big, it's way too late," Miami head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews said. "We talked about getting off to a quick start and I didn't see any quick starts on court one, two or three in doubles. Duke, on the majority of the courts today, just their emotional maturity and their ability to hit balls longer in points and higher situations [was key]."
FACT: Miami dropped to 17-13 all-time in ACC Championship play with Saturday's result, including 16-11 at Cary Tennis Park. The Hurricanes will now await their seeding for the NCAA Team Championship, with draws announced Tuesday at 5 p.m.
TRACK: The Hurricanes competed in an elite track and field event on Saturday at the National Relay Championships.
With the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships just two weeks away, the Canes had a chance to compete against an outstanding field of talent this weekend at John McDonnell Field by the University of Arkansas.
"It was a great meet and a great concept," Miami director of track and field/cross country Amy Deem said. "I'm disappointed. I didn't think we performed extremely well in any event across the board. It wasn't a lack of effort. We just were off this weekend in a lot of event areas. I've noticed in the past when we've had a meet like this that we've come back really strong, so in that aspect we hope to be fine for ACCs.
Miami's men finished third in Heat 1 and eighth overall in the 4x100m relay, as McKinly Brown, Myles Valentine, Isaiah Taylor and Lorenzo Lingard combined to run a season-best time of 40.44 seconds.
"I was proud of our 4x1 men," Deem said. "We had to make some last minute decisions and I think they worked out well and we have something we can build on now."
FACT: UM's Amy Deem is widely recognized as one the the best track and field coaches in the Country.

Please also note above who is running men's track on the 4x100 relay team.

I guess the Dolphins is turning over a new leaf. I don't think they drafted any kids from Florida schools. I guess Florida kids have bad character.

Outstanding Work 86. I greatly appreciate this. I like the this week in Hurricanes Athletics. Please keep this going forward. Nice to see Lorenzo Lingard running track.

The U at least takes game 3 in Tally, 11-5. Baseball isn't much fun at the U any more.

How bout a look back at a Hurricane great: Stanley Shakespeare, Charles Johnson, Rick Barry, etc.

Old Skool...good idea. I have a concept based on WR Shakespear #6.

Do football players still get track scholarships? It's the best way to free up an extra scholly for football!

UM RB Lingard...Received offers from over 30 schools across the country…He also is an accomplished track and field athlete, as he claimed the Florida State 4A Championship in the 110-meter hurdles…Chose Miami over offers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, Florida and Georgia, among others.
Posted by: 86Cane | April 29, 2018 at 09:45 PM
Great wrap up Soup! And I did notice Lingard on the 4x100 relay team. Lingard jumped right in after Spring football. I guess he is really fast! LOL

The only question left is: "Is Lingard the missing link to Mark Richt's offense?"
Imagine Lingard at RB with a true, mobile, versatile read-option QB who can also make regular and major plays with his feet and his arm and a fleet of WRs that can stretch the field?

Looks like this crop of rising juniors (CMR's first recruiting class), include Joe Jackson and Richards, who are both being projected in the first round. If they have good years, they are likely gone to the NFL. Michael Jackson is also being given some first round projections, so it appears his decision to return could turn out to be a great decision. With a good year, Jaquan Johnson will also potentially be at least a day 2 prospect.
Next season is important for the Canes to continue winning because they have a lot of high-end talent that will possibly be leaving for the NFL.

I agree 100%. The offense could be a 40+ points per game offense. Just too much talent all over.

Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | April 30, 2018 at 09:11 AM
40? I dont think so. Only 7 or 8 teams did that last year, and I dont think Rosier or at best a RS freshman QB is going to do that, especially with a suspect OL and suspect play calling.
Posted by: His Royal Dudeness | April 30, 2018 at 10:47 AM
Have to agree with HRD on this. Heck lets recoup the 5 points ppg differential we lost from 2016 averaging 34 ppg in 2017 we averaged 29 ppg in 2017.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | April 30, 2018 at 12:31 PM
We ain’t scoring no 40 a game with Rosier at QB.

Tried to post link yesterday but Morris' Canes denied the Miami hating Mike Martin from becoming the winningest coach in NCAA history Sunday by kicking that tally azz.
Go Canes!!!

If Nosier starts this year. The offense will drop at least 45 points per game!

Lol 86.

It's true Rosy will get us to 40 a game but it will be ugly. The Herb can see a line of 15-35 for 300 yds and a pick. It don,'t get no better than that.

We are exactly 1 month away from Hurricane season.....just lovely :-)

Rescue mission update...
Our early morning, pre-dawn raid to free CoCane was a success. We can report that he has been located and safely extricated from hostile captivity under the evil clutches of the dastardly WWIN.
Fortunately, WWIN was not home during the time of the raid and no casualties were sustained by the Canespace Rescue Crew. The only person present at the home was Stormy Daniels who answered the door wearing nothing but a Malik Rosier jersey. TSully was left to "interrogate" her while NativeCane, Old Skool and I proceeded to locate and free CoCane from his captivity.
Tragically, CoCane was found locked in a closet full of Malik Rosier football jerseys and is undergoing a psychiatric evaluation and is currently sedated and being treated for PTSD.

Braxton Berrios is the 42nd Miami wide receiver drafted in the Common Era (since 1967).
That's the most in the NCAA.

Its 4 DL and 1 OL if I read that right. Nevertheless, Miami with 3 potential 1st rounders shows things are trending in the right direction as far as player development is concerned. As we all know, its the key to out talenting the ACC and eventually the NCAA. Look at what we have replacing those guys the following year also, very little drop off and in fact, more depth. Richt is slow and steady, but he'll get us where we need to be for the next guy at the very least, assuming Miami is serious about its National Championship history. Perhaps, Richt can finally win it all just by stacking blue chips and developing them. If we can just win and recruit 1 more year, I have a feeling that we'll have turned the corner and the ACC could be ours in 2019 resulting in a playoff berth, in which case, our filthy D might be able to carry us. I just hope we start out by controlling LSU, that'd calm a lot of fears I think.

I agree 100%. The Canes are stacking talent, and it is clear that the Canes have gotten more talented at every position under CMR. As the younger players get more experience, they should outperform the players that the Golden recruits are replacing. Golden did recruit some talent, but Golden also recruited guys who were not as talented. CMR recruits better and a lot more talented players. Just go to the games and watch players like Richards, Thomas, Jackson, Pinkney and Donaldson, and you will see that Golden just didn't recruit players like that. Now that CMR's recruits are the majority of the team, there is clearly a lot more talent across the board, and CMR seems to express a lot of confidence in this team and its upcoming 2018 season. This could be a special year.

Incredible.
10 of 24 players from Alabama’s top ranked 2015 class have transferred.
And they haven’t missed a beat. Talk about depth of talent and player development.

Interesting. I didn't realize that Shawn Burgess-Becker had transferred from Alabama to UCF, and is now playing LB. SBB might end up being a great LB, but he should have come to Miami out of high school. After SBB, perhaps, other South Florida recruits will see the other side for committing to Saban.

Nick Chubb had some things to say. It seems though, that Miami's staff understands what Chubb said, because leadership is a big deal now, at least on D it is. Its hard to have any leadership on O when you keep failing to be productive.

The University of Miami men's tennis team received a bid to the 2018 NCAA Team Championship, as announced on the NCAA selection show Tuesday evening.
The Hurricanes (14-12, 4-8 ACC), who will compete at the national stage for the 23rd time in program history, will remain in-state and travel to Gainesville, Fla., to face in-state foe, North Florida, in the opening round Saturday, May 12. Miami (16-7, 11-3 ACC) earned the No. 16 national seed for the tournament, as announced Tuesday night. This is the Hurricanes' 23rd straight NCAA Team Championship appearance and their 33rd in the 37-year NCAA era.
