With all of the hoopla surrounding the 2018 NFL Draft, I thought we would try to take a look at some of the more interesting statistics and story lines that resulted from the highly anticipated annual event. Here is what we found on the surface:
Not surprisingly, Alabama had the most selections with 12 of which 4 were taken in the first round. Nick Saban's seemingly annual pilgrimage to the National Championship game keeps drawing in much of the top talent in the Country each and every year.
Alabama helped lead the way for the SEC to have 53 selections overall. The SEC was closely followed by the ACC with 45 picks. The other conferences were not close as the Big 10 had 33, the Pac 12 had 30 and the Big 12 had 20. FCS division II/III schools also represented well with 23 picks in total.
Three teams had 7 selections in the 2018 NFL Draft: Ohio State, LSU and (somewhat surprisingly) N.C. State. It would seem that if North Carolina State was going to make some noise in the ACC it would have been last year. Seems like oh well for the Wolfpack.
Four teams had 6 players picked in 2018: Georgia, Penn State, FSU and Miami. Even though FSU had an off year and Miami started very strong and then faded after injuries to key offensive players, both schools continue to feed the pipeline to the NFL.
Teams with 5 players selected included Florida, Virgina Tech and Wisconsin. In spite of its continued floundering, Florida always recruits well. Of course we all know that Miami beat Virginia Tech convincingly and lost to Wisconsin badly in the bowl game.
Turns out that UCF, the little team that could, the undefeated and proudly self proclaimed "National Champions", had 4 selections in 2018. To put that in perspective, that is the same number of draft picks that National powerhouses like USC and Notre Dame had. Let that soak in and marinate for a while.
Other Florida schools that had at least one selection were USF with 2 and FIU with 1. The one selection tied FIU with Nebraska, where Cornhusker Nation hopes that hometown hero and former UCF coach Scott Frost can fix things that are broken.
Go Canes Yep WWIN got a losers mentality.

Lol Terrance...are you referring to Donna?
Posted by: TonyCane | May 05, 2018 at 09:10 PM
Correct me if I'm wrong but has a coach received an extension on a 3 game skid?
Posted by: SinisterCane | May 05, 2018 at 09:27 PM
Sure I am referring to Donna, Tad, and the Athletic Directors at those times.

Not until now.
But it goes with a piece of key lime pie from Jimmy Johnson's restaurant in Key Largo so I guess it is OK? Oh wait, Richt has NOT met with JJ as far as we know? #FalseRumors

Lol Terrance...it was all one amorphous blob of defeat and penny pinching.
Posted by: TonyCane | May 06, 2018 at 12:50 AM
Yeah okay Tonycane. Yeah we were just doing great and taking care of everything in the 80's and 90's as well wasn't we but had facilities worse than some high schools much less low level colleges or much less power 5 schools, didn't want to pay coaches and as soon as coaches won enough they dipped. But sure just blame Donna for everything. Tad was a penny pincher as well. But evidently you have a aversion to the truth. Some of Us can say yes Donna didn't do the best job, but I also know Tad was no better. Our AD's were okay but no Great Shakes either. Any more questions Tonycane or are you going to act like WWIN and just sidestep and act silly. I always lol at those who act like the president only matters. Why do you have AD'S for you know the people who run the Athletic Department but you never talk about them. Weak Sauce. WWIN comes with what if Coach Richt is fired in 2 years but says he has the ultimate winner in Malik so what is it WWIN lol. U guys are batting a 1000 today. Pure Comedy!
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | May 06, 2018 at 01:03 AM
The U blows the lead in the 7th and 8th, but scores 2 in the 9th for the 8-7 win over Bethune Cookman. Riding a 3 game win streak into the third game of this series, any shot of a postseason bid (unlikely) now involves almost perfection the rest of the way. They still have two more ACC series left in B.C. and V.T., and need to find a way to get the total and ACC records over .500.

WW I know you get confuused when things get complicated but that one comes totally out of left field, even for you.
Why do I "hate" him now?
Cause I said I wasn't sure if he'd be the right fit for us here right now?
Come on.
Posted by: Go Canes!! | May 06, 2018 at 08:26 AM
Terrance, I might have been unfair, but this is how I see it:
1) Tad Foote - did not spend huge amounts on the athletic program, but the coaching salary escalation and facilities arms race were not yet underway. We had poor facilities - I've read Cane Mutiny and they were so bad in the late 70s that Schelly wouldn't show them to recruits - but it was partially par for the course. Several NFL teams - including the Dolphins - had subpar facilities that were barely better than high school level.
2) Donna Schalala - Coaching salary escalation began in full force at the beginning of her tenure, as did the facilities war. She chose to be conservative and gamble that giving Randy Shannon the resources for a low cost staff would allow the winning and revenue to continue, and it didn't. We got lapped for Florida and a milieu of other schools as we fell further behind. No nuritionists. No meal plans. Players eating once a day - at McDonalds and leaving the U in 2010 weaker than they arrived as freshmen. This was all known. Golden pushed for upgrades - and didn't even get the nutritionist until 2013. Shalala and the admin chose to run a budget program at a time when other schools were spending tremendous amounts of money, and we came perilously close to being left behind.
Posted by: TonyCane | May 06, 2018 at 11:11 AM
And Terrance, I don't blame Donna exclusively. The AD and admin share blame. Perhaps the penny pinching was no worse under Shalala than with Foote - that could be the case. Perhaps it just became that much more obvious when the coaching salary escalation and facilities war began st the beginning of the 2000s

U baseball wins 4th in a row and completes sweep over bethune cookman today, although in ugly fashion. Ugly is the only way they win. Blew an 11-4 lead before scoring 1 in the 9th to win 12-11. I'll take wins anyway I can get them at this point. The win gets them a few games over 500 at the Light at least. Road has really sucked..

Great idea offering a coach that said "THIS IS MY LAST STOP, I'M RETIRING HERE" in year 3 of his 5yr contract! Recruits were really nervous wondering who our coach will be 4yrs from now!
Same fans that kept believing in Golden!

Good morning
In a bit of off topic news:
Andrew Suarez got his first win of his career for the SF Giants over the Braves! Hopefully the first of many more for our ex Cane!
PS for those that know me and my daughter - she is deciding between UCLA law or vandy law - entertainment and sports so Ucla is #1 but far away - we will see
Posted by: AeroCane | May 07, 2018 at 09:41 AM
I remember all three being popular choices, probably because they were.
And I remember all three falling from grace for very different reasons, with this prgram ending in a similar place.
Now they are gone and CMR is here. Their failures are not his failures and his successes are not their successes.
One has a hall of fame resume, the others had limited success before and virtually none after.
You don’t make decisions on a coach who’s top 5 in active coaching wins based on the fact the people before you f-ed up three prior hires.
Smart, long term thinking people with a plan don’t function that way. Stupid people with only the capacity to look backwards to decide what to do going forward do that.

The contract extension is not surprising. It is done for a few reasons, and none of them have to do with UM largess:
1) CM Richt has not intentions of leaving, but if two years from now UT, Alabama, or an NFL team were to make an offer, we would have wanted to have kept his salary on pace with the escalation in coaching payouts
2) It sends a message to recruits that UM and Richt are committed to each other. I think it’s highly likely that other coaches are telling recruits that Richt might leave, and if we waited until the final year to extend him it probably raises some doubts.
My guess is that the extension is due to these, and probably more of the former.

Tony...I agree. It is to show L/T stability in the program at the top. No complaints here.

It also seems like during the last decade, we never really knew if Miami actually had the best team in the Coastal... VT, GT and UNC all had good teams from one season to the next. Those teams still do have their nice squad every so often but Miami is clearly the favorite in any matchup now. We got this train moving.
