A pair of Miami Hurricanes were selected to the Athlon Sports Preseason All-America teams, the publication announced Tuesday.
Senior defensive back Jaquan Johnson was named to the preseason All-America First Team, while junior linebacker Shaq Quarterman was a third-team selection.
One of the best safeties in America a season ago, Johnson decided to return for his senior season after being named a Second-Team All-America by Sports Illustrated and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) in 2017. Johnson led the Hurricanes with 96 total tackles a season ago, and also tied for the team lead with four interceptions. A Walter Camp Player of the Year semifinalist and a three-time ACC Defensive Back of the week honoree, Johnson has totaled 160 tackles, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and six interceptions in 39 career games -he hasn't missed a game since arriving in January 2015.
An Orange Park, Fla., native, Quarterman has started all 26 games at linebacker since arriving to Coral Gables in 2016, including his true freshman season, when he was named a Freshman All American and to the All-ACC Third Team. In 2017, Quarterman was voted to the All-ACC Second Team after finishing with 83 total tackles, 7.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. In two seasons at The U, Quarterman has compiled 167 total tackles, 17.0 tackles for loss and 6.0 sacks.
Johnson and Quarterman join senior center Tyler Gauthier as recipients of major preseason honors; Gauthier was named to the watch list for the Rimington Trophy, honoring the nation's top collegiate center, in late May.
We'll have more than 2 on this list next year!

86,
My question: 7-8 years ago you sold some CaneSpace stickers for cars of Sebastian with our football titles listed under/around him and a space for the next championship to go, any chance that these things still exist?
Pops just totaled his truck (not his fault) and the only thing he wanted back was that sticker.

First off, sorry to hear about your Pop's accident. Glad he is OK. Those decals were made by Cat5 Cane and distributed on a one time only basis. I will see if he can replicate or reproduce a new batch for another distribution.

I think we will have more than 2 on the All American list next year, AND before the end of the season THIS SEASON. This can be a special season. There is a lot of buzz surrounding the program and the players are excited about playing this upcoming season. That indoor practice facility and surrounding campus looks great. Recruits love it, and they want to come to Coral Gables and play here. The players are anxious to get inside and practice in the new facility. Their level of preparation, excitement and performance will rise.

For Go Canes' EYES ONLY:
"Sophomore Navaughn Donaldson is looking to make the transition from guard to offensive tackle in 2018 and he has dropped ten pounds from his listed weight last year. Look for Donaldson to try and weigh in at 330 pounds (or maybe lower if possible) by the start of the season."
Fat and slow is no way to go through life.

Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | July 02, 2018 at 10:49 AM
AGREED! The coaches said Rousseau was a MAJOR disruptor during the Spring scrimmages! They had to re-adjust their offensive linemen to try to account for him!
Posted by: roachcane77 | July 02, 2018 at 04:42 PM
Gus Felder is doing serious work. The Canes team as a whole is looking the part.
I saw some of the players in shorts and t-shirts during CMR summer camps, and they look really good. They are big and athletic across the board. Even the DTs look like they carry their weight well. We will see if looks translate into playing well.
Donaldson is just a massive human being. you don't see people that massive on over ACC team.
Donaldson has always been just naturally huge, powerful and strong, since I first saw him in high school. As Soup would say though, "Fat and slow is no way to go through life."
When you see him standing next to the other Canes OLs, you can see that Donaldson stands out. If Donaldson gets his weight down to 330 or lower, he will definitely be first team All American this season and the Canes will have a dominant offensive line - vault that.
Rousseau is definitely tall, and carries his weight well. He can pack some more weight on more muscle on that tall, long frame for sure. Rousseau played several positions in high school, but it looks like he has settled in at DE, and there isn't much depth in front of him so he should see some playing time this season.
The Canes look like a top 5 team in shirts and shorts. We will see if they play like it.

The SOUP is hot:
Five University of Miami men's basketball alums are on rosters for the 2018 NBA Summer League, which kicks off Monday and runs through July 17. Lonnie Walker IV and Trey McKinney Jones (San Antonio Spurs), Bruce Brown, Jr. (Detroit Pistons), Kamari Murphy (Brooklyn Nets) and Davon Reed (Phoenix Suns) each will be competing in the annual summer league. The action starts July 2-5 in Salt Lake City and Sacramento before shifting to Las Vegas from July 6-17. All games in the NBA Summer League will be televised by ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU or NBA TV.

Posted by: TonyCane | July 02, 2018 at 09:43 PM
You called him slow, fat and lazy and a terrible tackle.
I said he was an All American, at guard, not tackle.
He didn't play a single snap at tackle last year.
How was i wrong again?
Posted by: Go Canes!! | July 03, 2018 at 07:33 AM
Not one for recruiting hyperbole but after watching some of the videos of these kids at The Opening, Evan Neal has to be the number one must get for CMR and company this cycle.
Kid looks to be a heavy Miami lean and was dominant at tackle against the best in the nation.

Posted by: Go Canes!! | July 03, 2018 at 07:33 AM
No, wrong again Gilligan!
I called him slow and fat last year AT GUARD.
Then came all of the talk about moving him to Tackle this year and I said "If he stays slow and fat with and lacking fitness/endurance that he will not fare well at Tackle and that Rosier will be TOAST."
He wants to move to tackle to get paid. The UM coaches have agreed to it because he may be the best (Gauthier?) OL player they have on the team and hope he can play Tackle.

The World Cup needs a golden pacifier (or maybe a couple of balls in sack for obvious reasons) award for the biggest wussy. Right now, Neymar is an easy winner for his screaming, ankle grabbing, ground rolling injury hysteria. The guy should have been given last rites, carried off the field and tossed in a dumpster for that display.

Soccer, even if you want to argue that it is the most watched or played sport in the world, is simply hard to watch. The faking, diving and carrying on by the players is beyond ridiculous.
Watching the announcers comment on the highlights at halftime of ANOTHER scoreless game is pathetic. "Look, he had a shot on goal" or "See there he almost made a goal" as the shot soars 20 feet over the goal. The accuracy of the passes even makes Rosier look good!
Then you have the commentators saying "1v1" as though they have invented and coined a new phrase. NEWS FLASH...it has been called "One on One" in every sport since the beginning of time. BUT NO, they want to say "1v1" as though it is cool or something?
Then the players literally attack the referees and soccer is OK with that. If a player even bumps or touches the ref they should get a RED card and be ejected. Watching them argue and yell and insult and make contact with the refs is disgraceful for ANY sport.
OK, I'm done.

Soccer to me is like curling at the Olympics. I enjoy it because of how heightened the emotions are of everyone invovled.
But as a sport, to me it’s like watching a baseball game where every potential home run goes foul. Sit there forever, scream for a second, then sit down again disappointed.
