NEW BLOG IS UP!

Herbieibis

The Dawgs wiff their 5th 5 star 2019 recruit. Why do I mention this, is because if we want to get to the promise ed land, we can't settle for a bunch of 3 stars.

Herbieibis

Bigwindy,
I hope they are bigger, stronger and faster, after a years worth of lifting.
I want them to play big on big games. We have a few unknowns like qb, ol and dt but we should over come all these but to win a ship in this era we can't rank outside the top 12 in recruiting.

Go Canes!!

Honestly OCD, for your own good, change your meds.

Harvey will be a beast. With players like Garvin, The Canes have recruited and developed some of the best three star commits I have seen over the last two years. Harvey looks like one of them.

And every Cane player across the board looks bigger and stronger. No baby fat. Bandy is bigger. Homer is bigger. Rosier is bigger. players like Knowles and Finley who play the striker position, look like LBs. Even Langham looks like a tight end. The college players were much bigger than the high school recruits, but they were definitely jumping around, celebrating and having fun out on the field with the recruits. It looks like a family atmosphere.

But, but, but, GD says ESPN stats and research Inc says that Miami will win all their games, including the Pitt regular season finale last year! Are you saying GD is a homer ass clown who picks and chooses his data to only try and shine orange and green coke bottle glasses? I'm shocked Noel, this is my shocked typing font!

Looks like it's time to start drinking if you're not already three sheets to the wind, Ed. Or, as Ed usually calls it, "Sunday."

Herbieibis

We need to be around the 14 mark consistently in getting at least 4 star players, that's if we want to keep up with the Joneses.
We have enough 3 star players for next year's class. We need to stock pile talent.

Go Canes!!

Another “3 Star”

Alpha Dog

DE Jahfari Harvey – The Vero Beach pass rusher has added 15 pounds of muscle this offseason and it showed. He used an explosive first step to beat opposing offensive tackles both inside and outside during 1-on-1s and was able to beat three-star offensive tackle Michael Cartwright with ease on multiple occasions. Harvey continues to look like one of the best kept secrets in the Sunshine State this cycle and a steal for Miami. He intends to enroll at UM early next January after picking the Hurricanes over Michigan, Ore

Go Canes!!

Ford will end up being a beast imo.

BigWindyCane

Jerimiah Payton is the real deal. From what I saw tonight at Paradise Camp, Payton might be the best WR in Florida this year. Very confident and can make catches and plays everywhere.

Canes have some really good recruits across the board. I saw a few recruiting websites out there covering what is going on. I didn’t always understand what goes into their star rating systems. I don’t know what the recruiting websites look for, but I like every Canes commit I saw. They really jumped out as being clearly the best. I like what I saw

BigWindyCane

Dean might be the fastest DB. Dean has crazy physical gifts, but not putting it together mentally. Dean could also stand to get a little physically stronger in his core.

Saw Bandy tonight at Paradise Camp. Dropped by to check it out. Nice crowd. Lots of good competition. Bandy has gotten bigger. Bandy looks like he could be 200 LBs. Still hasn’t lost a step, and bandy is an emotional leader of that defense.

TruCane81

One UM staffer (not mentioned here) cited cornerback Jhavonte Dean and defensive tackle Jon Ford as two players who have “all the physical tools but haven’t put it all together on the field yet.”

Damn was really hoping to hear better from these two.

Ford is young so fall camp could really help him, but I was really hoping Dean would take the next step and lock down the other boundary. I really want to see Bandy unleashed in the slot. He can get a lot of sacks and pick 6’s with his skills there. It would make teams think twice about all that stand up and throw they like to do against us.

Dean showed lots of athleticism, but was short on awareness. Looks like that problem is still there. I know Bandy can hold down the boundary even with his lack of height, but a big year from Dean takes us to the scary defense level. Really want to see Jackson and Dean holding the outside and putting Bandy all over.

Well they will have a month to get ready once they put the pads on come August.

TC,
Not worried about NC State’s class, but FSU and Clemson will both have strong classes and they will look to compete with the Canes for recruits in South Florida. As long as the Canes can protect their own turf and get most of the recruits they want in their own backyard, then pick off a few other recruits from other areas, CMR will have the foundation to build a consistent CFP contender

Posted by: BigWindyCane | July 28, 2018 at 06:42 PM

If we pick up players at the same rate as the 2018 and 2017 classes, we can expect to pick up 2 - 6 more four star players for the 2019 class between now and national signing day. If it's around 6 we're perfectly positioned to not only maintain roster strength, but continue to improve it. Generally, we should be targeting the commitment of at least ten 4 star players each class.

TonyCane

TJL, he'll not only make the team, but I would draft him outright in fantasy football (late round).

understood from Shaqs dad from another site:

The way he holds his guys accountable and have their back in the same breath... Example After one of the away games..we go meet up with the players before they load up on the bus... This particular play was stuck in my head. I see Shaq and immediately ask Shaq why on this particular play you see the ball moving away from your gap assignment ... you plug your gap anyway... I was like.. I know you have an assignment but sometimes you can't be a programmed player like a robot but deviate and make a play... it was something like that... but before Shaq could respond... Diaz chimed in... didn't know he was listening... If everyone did their assigned job then all lanes would be closed. He went on to say Shaq listens and if I had 11 Shaqs.. then my only job would be to drive the bus to the stadium...I was like did he just protect my kid from me .. a sideline heckler.... Fast forward to a couple of days ago... Linebacker meeting... the session is WHAT NOT TO DO AS A LINEBACKER... Shaq said he was the subject of about 90 percent of the plays.. He holds his players up and holds his player down

College guys are challenging, but a lot of them have stayed here for the summer as I was able to get them jobs at 2 Amazons close by. They have bought into my ideas ..not as fast as young guys but i have won hem over....we should be good....

My biggest concern for UM is Rozier.....good kid, average QB at best...had some luck last year...but luck dont last...got to execute. Still we should be pretty good ...we will miss Coach Kool Manny will have to do a great job...but we look very good on paper....12-0 sounds great...but it is much different when you Add Them Pads!
Looking forward to a great season....

A six-pack of Hurricanes notes on a Thursday:

▪ In recent weeks, I asked several defensive assistant coaches what offensive player, in addition to quarterback Malik Rosier, impressed them this offseason. Cornerbacks coach Mike Rumph, safety coach Ephraim Banda and outside linebackers coach Jonathan Patke all mentioned receiver Jeff Thomas, among others.

“Jeff Thomas can be the best slot receiver in the country,” Patke said. “When he gets extra gear, he’s faster than anybody else out there. He can be a real difference maker.”

Banda believes Tyler Gauthier “can be one of the best centers in the country. A very powerful, powerful person.”

And we’ve been cautioned repeatedly not to overlook Deejay Dallas in a backfield headlined by Travis Homer and five-star freshman Lorenzo Lingard.

“Deejay has tremendous vision and agility,” Rumph said. “His quickness and seeing holes and making people miss, he does that the best out of any one in our backfield. I love Travis Homer — he’s going to be really good — and Lingard can fly, but vision and cuts is Deejay Dallas.”

▪ UM believes one area it will be better is its ability to use and defend “12” personnel — with two tight ends and one running back.

Freshmen tight ends Will Mallory and Brevin Jordan are well equipped to play together, and the new striker position will allow UM to defend that set better on defense.

One UM offensive staffer put it this way: “If you go back to the year the Patriots had both Gronk [Rob Gronkowski] and Aaron Hernandez on the field at the same time, they were a 12 personnel team, similar to us in 2016 when we had David Njoku and Chris Herndon. Why that’s so great is you can get into a two-back offense with one of those tight ends as a fullback like we did with Herndon and you can play a larger percentage of your offense….

“You can run every single formation known to mankind out of that personnel grouping. And if your quarterback is a runner, that’s even more dangerous. Having that role on our offense and defense, having guys like Derrick Smith and Romeo Finley that can fit that mold — they’re big enough to hold up in the run game as linebackers but good enough to hold up in coverage against backs and tight ends — will be invaluable to us.”

▪ One UM staffer (not mentioned here) cited cornerback Jhavonte Dean and defensive tackle Jon Ford as two players who have “all the physical tools but haven’t put it all together on the field yet.”

Florida Keys News Update
Stay up to date on news from the Keys

Miami remains optimistic on both, though Ford likely will need to play more than UM ideally wanted, because of the early departures of Kendrick Norton and Richard McIntosh Jr.

▪ I’m most concerned about the offensive line, where UM has no potentially dominant starter unless Navaughn Donaldson makes the guard-to-tackle transition better than the Dolphins’ Laremy Tunsil did last year.

“He always wanted to go to tackle,” said Hayden Mahoney, who’s the front-runner at one guard spot. “He has the height, he has the weight. He’s doing extra reps every day. Learning tackle, watching pro guys, kind of seeing what they do and some of their technique. He’s excited about it. We’re all excited about it, too.”

▪ UM is awaiting word on whether the NCAA will allow basketball transfer Anthony Mack to play this season or whether he will be required to sit out this season after leaving Wyoming this past spring after his freshman season. There was no decision as of Thursday afternoon.

We hear as one part of the UM/Mack appeal, Miami has made the case to the NCAA that for medical reasons, Mack needs to play at a lower elevation than he had been at Wyoming.

Laramie, Wyoming, is 7,165 feet above sea level. Coral Gables is 10 feet above sea level.

Mack missed this past season while dealing with concussion-like symptoms. If ruled eligible, he could have a prominent role on the Hurricanes next season.

A former three-star prospect at New Jersey’s Blair Academy, Mack generated interest from Villanova, Georgia and Missouri, among others.

Two transfers definitely will be eligible to play for the Hurricanes this season: Guard Miles Wilson — who left Mount St. Mary’s for UM in 2017 — and guard Zach Johnson, who left Florida Gulf Coast for UM this past April.

The 6-5 Wilson averaged 11.8 points and 3.9 rebounds as a freshman for Mount St. Mary’s.

The 6-2 Johnson, a grad transfer, was a three-year starter for the Eagles and averaged 16.1 points per game last season and scored 37 in the Eagles’ Atlantic Sun Championship game loss to Lipscomb.

But Oklahoma transfer guard Kameron McGusty must sit out next season at UM; he’s eligible to play in 2019-20.

▪ Ex-Canes file: Two rookie Canes defensive linemen are missing the start of their first NFL training camps. McIntosh, who has been dealing with a thyroid issue and underwent an offseason procedure, is on the Giants’ the active/non-football illness list. Meanwhile, the Browns placed Chad Thomas on the physically unable to perform list after surgery for a sports hernia. ...

According to the NFL players association, Patriots receiver Braxton Berrios’ University of Miami No. 8 jersey was the second-highest selling collegiate co-branded jersey from March 1 to May 31 this year. Only Tom Brady’s Michigan Wolverines jersey was a bigger seller. ...

Former UM star guard Shane Larkin signed a one-year, $1.8 million offer sheet with Turkish basketball club Anadolu Efes on Thursday. Larkin, who played in Spain earlier in his career, averaged 14.4 minutes and 4.3 points in 54 games with the Celtics last season. He has appeared in 256 NBA games, for the Mavericks, Knicks, Nets and Celtics.

From CIS.

This kid may be the most important recruit in our upcoming class and is a must get:

5-Star T Evan Neal Still Taking Time With Decision As Mom Pushes For Miami

David Wilson

BRADENTON -- Evan Neal knows it's not exactly a secret where most of his family would like to see him wind up at the next level. The 5-star tackle grew up a Miami fan, has family which has played for the Hurricanes and grew up closer to Coral Gables than either of the other Big 3 Florida schools.

And, of course, his mother is a factor, too. Even from IMG Academy in Bradenton, Neal talks to his parents every night about his potential college decision. Almost very night, his mother makes her voice heard.

"If it was up to her," Neal said Wednesday at IMG's media day in Bradenton, "I'd already be committed to Miami."

This isn't exactly new news. Neal first mentioned his mother's fixation on the Hurricanes almost a year ago after he visited Hard Rock Stadium for Miami's home finale against Virginia in November. A few months later, the offensive lineman told reporters ahead of the Under Armour All-America Game's Future 50 combine in January that the Hurricanes were doing the best job of recruiting his parents.

But months later, Neal still doesn't foresee an impending decision.

"She’s on me about it, man, but it’s a decision that I’m going to have to make. I’m going to take my time. I don’t want to jump the gun on any type of decision because I only get one," Neal said. "It'll either happen throughout the course of the season or right after the season because I'm early enrolling."

Right now, Neal is most concerned with preparing for his senior season with the Ascenders. IMG won't even let players loose this weekend ahead of fall camp's official start Monday. This means Neal won't be at Paradise Camp on Saturday, nor will he check out Florida State or Alabama. If he were able to take a visit this weekend, Neal said he'd most likely see either the Seminoles or Crimson Tide.

Neal's focus on football rather than the recruiting process is paying off so far. The senior earned a bump to 5-star status in the 247Sports composite rankings after a strong performance at The Opening finals. He continues to reshape his body, as well, as he's down about 30 pounds from the 385 pounds he played his junior season at.

It's still a work in progress for Neal, who realized how much weight he needed to cut in the spring. Packers tackle Bryan Bulaga, as many professional athletes do, spent part of the spring training at IMG. As good as Neal is, Bulaga still wasn't sold on the elite prospect. The offensive lineman told an Ascenders trainer he wouldn't draft Neal if he was a general manager.

"Because I was too fat," Neal said. "That kind of resonated with me. If he’s someone who’s already there and one of the best in the business, and he said he wouldn’t draft me, obviously I’ve got to get with it. I’ve got to get right."

Neal is targeting 320-325 pounds by the time he's eligible to be drafted. He still has a little way to go.

His focus on football, however, means the Hurricanes will have the final impression on Neal as he heads into his senior season. The Okeechobee native visited Miami on June 6 with his father, two cousins and an uncle. While he'd visited a number of times in the past -- most recently for junior day March 24 -- this visit was a chance to have significant one-on-one time with coach Mark Richt and the rest of his staff.

"It was a really, really good visit. They threw everything and the kitchen sink at me, man. I even got to see the new indoor facility," Neal said. "They’ve got something special going on there."

Neal doesn't currently have any visits planned -- and no official visits locked in -- but expects to take a handful during IMG's bye week and after the season. He could also get creative and use the Ascenders' jet-setting schedule to check out some of his top schools. IMG, for example, wraps up the regular season with a road game against Hoover (Ala.) High School on Nov. 2, so he would like to visit Alabama the same weekend.

Agree.

Though it likely won't matter at the end, the LSU game will probably affect our ranking for the majority of the season.

A loss to them gives every SEC homer the excuse to rank a 3-4 loss team in that conference above a 1-2 loss Canes team.

Terrance Sullivan

Pretty much the consensus of polls have Us between 6-10. We average around being Preseason #8. Need to play up to that ranking or even better. Basically 12-2 season.

Coastal is a mess and Miami is easily the most talented/experienced team in the division so it's expected that they win. Pending how the QB and OL play, I firmly believe Miami can win the ACC championship and have a shot at the playoffs. The team has to make up for the dismal 3 points scored in last year's ACCCG, which embarrassingly, is the lowest amount scored in the history of the game.

15-0! ALL ABOARD! Let's get this bus ROLLING!

5 star, shmive star... We got some ATHLETES coming to the U!

(If we JUST get more beast LINEMEN, I'll be happy, and could care LESS about other schools and their recruiting.)

Let's GO CANES!

Georgia has always had good High school football but they've never had this type of success.

a back-handed insult about CMR? lol

Herbieibis

Don't know what smart is selling at Georgia but they just got their 4th 5 star verbal for 2019. If they keep them that's 10 and counting in a year. Georgia has always had good High school football but they've never had this type of success.

Finally, someone who can follow a plot around this space! It's like you know me too well, Wally.

Just talk about the playoffs, coincidentally, the only thing that matters now.

TonyCane

Against. 12-0 is not success. 15-0 is.

58 Straight

12-0.

U are with us or against us.

Who is on the 12% bus this year?

TruCane81

as it was at season's end, we are still good enough to perhaps win the Coastal, but we will be little threat to Clemson and have no chance of being a Final Four team.

We need good to be great and great to get beyond Charoltte.

Posted by: Go Canes!! | July 24, 2018 at 11:21 PM

It won’t.

We will be much better regardless of who wins the job. This is the season we see Searles do his traditional work in the run game. Interior line play will be better. There will be longer, more consistent drives.

We just have to make Dj our Percy Harvin and we will have enough to squeeze out the yards, points, and t.o.p. we need to take the next step and at least COMPETE with Clemson.

TruCane81

If I remember correctly, didn't Richards drop 3 would be touchdown passes last year?

Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | July 24, 2018 at 09:35 PM

Yes and he was not the only one. There were many beautiful passes dropped by receivers.

Malik was not the same after he took that hit against UNC. If he is healthy this year, he will be an even better version of early season Malik last year. We can go a LONG way with that.

Smith coached with Meyer at UF and OSU. Smith was OSU’s recruiting coordinator.

Urban runs a dirty program and its just a matter of time before it catches up to OSU.

Go Canes!!

Lmao.

WWIN

GoCane Jr... did teams stack the box last season and try to force Rosier to beat em? So what the hell are you talking about for this year???

Go Canes!!

I was watching the FSU game the other night and the announcers made a comment about Jimbo saying completion percentage doesn't mean squat!

Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | July 24, 2018 at 09:32 PM

Then every college coach I've ever heard, besides Jimbo, is wrong.

And even if true, what other measuring tool would you like to use to measure?

Last six games, as the teams, as a whole, got better:

9 TD passes and 8 INTS

Passing yards: 202, 137, 210, 187, 110, 203

Wins 3 losses 3.

Above average games? Honestly, zero.

I'm hoping some of it was due to the shoulder injury, but you could see many of the same issues in games we were winning early.

Overall, I'm torn on what I want for next season at QB. Would love to see Malik get past his many inconsistencies and be the Senior leader this team leads. But I'd also love to see a young guy blow up in fall camp and take hold of this offense for the next four years.

So far Perry appears to be disappointing and Williams excelling. We will all see soon enough who the #2 guy will be coming in, now that there are no redshirt fears.

One thing I do know for sure is if the level of QB stays as it was at season's end, we are still good enough to perhaps win the Coastal, but we will be little threat to Clemson and have no chance of being a Final Four team.

We need good to be great and great to get beyond Charoltte.

CoCane

If Nosier ever goes to jail. When he has to squat and cough, Willie will fall from Malik's azzhole like bird droppings...

CoCane

Nosier has concussed Silly Willie 1 too many times

CoCane

Yes he did thirsty. How many would be TD passes did Rosier miss? I bet you can't count them off of the top of your head...

Ohio State Buckeyes coach Urban Meyer fired assistant Zach Smith on Monday, days after an Ohio judge deemed him an imminent danger to his ex-wife.

Smith coached with Meyer at UF and OSU. Smith was OSU’s recruiting coordinator.

thirstybuzzardcane

It won't matter if the QB can't get them the ball.

thirstybuzzardcane

That doesn’t change the fact Malik only completed half his passes in conference play and became a player we had to win in spite of down the stretch.
