One tradition that we have established here at Canespace over the last eleven years is that each year, when Fall practice starts and before the season begins, we ask bloggers to select their personal choices for what we like to call "Legends of the Fall".
This tradition actually started when CGNC, who is without a doubt a legend herself here on Canespace, started a series of player features with the same title. Years ago she wrote features about former UM players QB Kenny Dorsey and TE Jeremy Shockey and called them "Legends of the Fall".
In our fan selection process true "Legends of the Fall" are those players who the fans feel will have outstanding or "breakout" season for the Canes on offense and defense this year.
It's not about simply picking the Hurricanes' best players, but your personal favorites among the UM players apart from the usual suspects and most obvious stars. Some bloggers choose first or second year players who are likely to break on the scene as freshmen or sophomores.
Former winners include LB Sean Spence and WR Aldarius Johnson and QB Jacory Harris and DL Allen Bailey. Other winners were WR Leonard Hankerson and CB Brandon Harris. Then there was RB Lamar Miller and RB Duke Johnson and LB Denzel Perryman.
There are your unusual selections and surprises like kicker, punter and lead body slammer Matt Bosher who just happened to be the Canes 2008 MVP. The man was an absolute beast on special teams but who woulda thunk it?
Other bloggers are more traditional or conservative in their picks and select juniors or seniors who are projected to finally have that one incredible breakout season that leads them to become a high round NFL draft selection.
These picks could really be any defensive or offensive player who may be primed to explode on the scene after a solid previous season or a spectacular Summer. Offensive and defensive linemen may not be popular or sexy picks but they are just as eligible as any other position player.
And don't forget special teams standouts too who can change a game with that one big play that shifts the entire momentum of a game. Some bold predictions even result in selections of completely unexpected dark horse candidates for this honor like Sam Shields a few years ago.
If these long-shot picks actually play out, the blogger who picked them look like an absolute genius. This is the most risky, but potentially most rewarding, approach of all.
Then again if you decide to take a leap of faith on a player and they don't ball out like you might have hoped or expected then you might wind up like old time blogger Cat5 who selected LB Arthur Brown or SolarCane who selected WR Thearon Collier and then well, U know what happens then.
It's your choice. Here are the 2017 LOF rules:
- Pick one player on offense and one player on defense.
- Pick one freshman for "Freshman Impact Player of the Year".
- Pick one special teams player.
- Pick one assistant coach or coordinator for "Coach of the Year".
Now make your choices and you may win Canespace prizes and other fun stuff like tickets to a football, basketball or baseball game.
And remember: U gotta be in it to win it!

Miami football is a family and Hurricanes football players are members of a unique brotherhood that spans decades.
But for seniors Jaquan Johnson and Sheldrick Redwine, the bond runs much deeper than most. Growing up in the Richmond Heights area of Miami, Johnson and Redwine were two of the brightest stars shining for their local park football program.
"Me and Redwine, we played at the same park for the Richmond Giants and we grew up in the same neighborhood," Johnson said. "We just didn't go to the same middle school, but we've known each other from a while back. Redwine was on a lighter pound than I was, but you knew all the best players in the park. I heard Redwine's name after every game about being one of the hardest hitters at the park. I knew Redwine from growing up."
The duo finally paired up as teammates in high school, sparking the start of a long-lasting friendship while starring for Miami Killian High School.
"You never have to worry when we are with each other," Johnson said. "Even just growing up, it's the same type of thing. We weren't as close as we are now, but we always had each other's back. It takes a village to raise someone and he was part of that village for me just like I was for him."
Johnson was a four-time all county selection at safety for the Cougars and was selected to play in the US Army All-American Bowl before heading to Miami to further his education and football career.
Redwine starred at cornerback for Killian and appeared to be headed to Louisville after his senior year, but a visit to Miami just before National Signing Day ended with a scholarship offer to join Johnson and the Hurricanes in Coral Gables.
"God puts people in your life and we actually took the same path to get where we are," Johnson said. "We had to overcome the same type of circumstances, go to the same high school and same coaching and we both made it to the University of Miami and we are going through it now. He's my roommate now at the college level. Everything is meant for a reason."

I got my tickets in the mail for a Canes game. It's only Miami vs. Toledo. Sept. 15th, at Toledo.
But, they have a fairly new stadium. 1 1/2 hours from my house in Michigan. Can drive there with my man, Richard.
Excited and can't wait!!
GO CANES, prepare, prepare, prepare, for every game, because you never know.
Does everyone feel optimistic for the season???

I’m a little scared of the FIU game. Never under estimate a butch coached team. He knows how to recruit. He can’t get the talent we can. But there r still a shit load of talent in south fl that r unrecognized. He’s a master of the needle in the haystack proverb. He will find them. Plus it’s his 2nd year. And he kicked butt in his 1st year.

I will be on my way to Texas at 6:05am tomorrow
to watch one of the most important games the Miami Hurricanes have had in a long time. This could be the start of really big year, which I believe it will be. Rosier needs to come up big and take care of the ball. He has a lot of play makers to work with and I am believing he is ready this year if what I am hearing is true.
Looking forward to seeing all of my Canespace friends. Canes 31 LSU 13

Interesting quote from CMR about Rosier:
“The greatest improvement he has made is with his deep ball throws,” Richt said on the Joe Rose Show on 560 WQAM. “We have to be able to do that. So many people play man coverage now that you have to take some shots. I think the run-pass option that people run now forces people to play man coverage. If you play a zone, you get a linebacker that is halfway in between a running play and a passing play and you get eaten up.”
Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | August 27, 2018 at 11:55 AM
Rosier needs to be accurate and consistent. 54% completion rate Rosier had last season is unacceptable, and among the worst in college football. Rosier's 37% on deep balls isn't as bad, but Rosier also had a lot of open receivers at that range.
If Rosier has indeed improved his reads and accuracy like CMR says, the Canes can expect a completion rate of 60-65%. With a completion rate at that level, the Canes will have a prolific offense that will be among the best in the ACC with this roster full of playmakers. Choc and the fullback along with a healthy Richards and Cager, should improve third down and red zone coversions, which were also abismal.
