The Miami Hurricanes were back in action today on the Greentree Practice Fields Saturday morning, opening fall camp ahead of the 2018 season.
"It was really a great day in that you could feel the humidity, feel the heat," Miami head coach Mark Richt said. "A lot of guys that had great summers came through really well."
The Canes held their first official practice on Greentree since April. Miami returns 14 starters and 44 letter-winners from a team that won 10 games for the first time since 2003 and advanced to the ACC Championship Game for the first time in program history in 2017.
"Pretty typical Day One," Richt said. "It was very evident who has been around this program a while and who is just showing up for the first time – just in knowing how to practice and knowing how to push, knowing how to do things right, knowing how to finish a drill, knowing the things that we teach on a daily basis that [are] very, very normal to the guys who have been around and new to the guys who are new. They have a long way to go, just to understand how we practice around here. It's not because they're not trying. They're just learning."
As expected, Preseason All-ACC selections Jaquan Johnson and Shaquille Quarterman were among the leaders on the defensive side of the ball and they were impressed with how the team handled the first day of practice.
"It's great to see that your summer really paid off and I really see it for a whole bunch of guys on our team," Quarterman said. "Guys took the time and put in the work this summer. Everybody is looking better. As a team where we were last year with conditioning, we're way levels past that now so that's always good to see on the first day."
The Canes had several players back in action for the first time since the 2017 season, as veterans like Ahmmon Richards, Demetrius Jackson and Charles Perry participated in a practice for the first time since suffering season-ending injuries last season.
"Just finally being able to practice again and doing all the little things with all my teammates again, it just felt good to be out here," Richards said. "I haven't really practiced since December of last year. I'm kind of getting back into football condition. I'll be alright."
While the veterans led the way for the Canes on Saturday, several newcomers made a quick impression on Richt and his staff on the opening day of camp.
"Some of the young guys [were] making a few plays here and there," Richt said. "I know Dee Wiggins had a really great contested catch in the end zone one time. [Marquez] Ezzard - once he learns what to do - I think is going to be a pretty good ballplayer. I really like the young [defensive backs] – you have [Al] Blades doing a good job. Cam [Davis], the tailback out of Carol City, did a nice job today. You can see his quickness and those types of things."
The Canes took a major step forward as a program in 2017, finishing with a perfect 7-0 record at home during the regular season in 2017 and marking the first undefeated home campaign during the regular season since 2002. But Miami stumbled down the stretch, dropping its final three games to finish 10-3 on the season.
With a deep group of proven veterans and an influx of talented newcomers joining the roster, the Canes feel like they will have the depth to avoid a late-season slide and finish the year strong.
"We want to finish," Johnson said. "We preach that all the time. There are four quarters to football. We started off the season with a great half of the season and then on the back end we let things go. We're preaching that we have to finish. That's what's most important."
Can't wait for the Canes game and meet all you Canespace friends, especially You Terrence,

Dugans has recruited a lot of future NFL talent on the roster. Dugans is also developing those already on the roster. I watched him work Paradise Camp. Dugans looks like an elite WR coach. Perhaps one of the best in college football. Glad CMR found a way to keep him here in Miami. Recruiting and developing elite WR talent is one of the major keys in returning the Canes to the top of college football

Never took the BUS to school. Walked to school every morning, snow or sun. So, rev up the BUS, and I will root every weekend. Still may go to the Toledo game. Will call tomorrow for two tickets at the Toledo Box Office. Maybe I will get lucky. Getting so close to the opening game. Getting nervous, like I always do. Hope there are a lot of televised games.
My best to all of you.

Guess I will settle for Toledo. Tickets are $83 and my honey and I can drive from home in Michigan. Please let me know if any Canespacers are going. Day game, 12 noon. Perfect. Maybe we can meet in the parking lot somewhere. I will take extra vitamins!!!

I just worry about LSU's defense. I wasn't too concerned about ND's.
We had a hell of a time against Clemson's D. I'm expecting LSU to be just as good, if not better.
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | August 06, 2018 at 11:51 AM
Don't know what the o/u will be in the Miami/LSU game, but I'm definitely will be taking the under.
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | August 06, 2018 at 11:53 AM
My guess is they'll have the O/U at probably around 34 points.

Go Canes, I can clearly remember when it was the opposite, in the waning days of Coker. When we could not even recruit enough wide receivers to meet minimum requirements.
Great job by CM Richt et al in stockpiling wide receivers. Even losing Sam Bruce and Dionte Mullins quickly (both 4 star recruits), we have absorbed those losses and have the deepest, most talented wide receiver Corp since 2001.

💯
Clemson’s D will be other worldly good this year. Seen multiple mock drafts projecting FOUR first rounders from their d-line.
LSU isn’t nearly that good.
We’re going to beat them convincingly.

Garvin, Silvera, Rousseau and Ford will be a terror here:
Chirinos: Another note from today, Hurricanes DC Manny Diaz said several young players have flashed early. Mentioned Al Blades twice, Nesta Silvera, Jordan Miller, Greg Rousseau, Gilbert Frierson, DJ Ivey. Also said Gurvan Hall's back and "doing Gurvan Hall things."
Posted by: Go Canes!! | August 06, 2018 at 12:52 PM
Chirinos: Any of the newcomers on the defensive line impress Joe Jackson?
“Greg Rousseau. He’s one of those freak of natures. He’s got the height, the get-off, the speed. He’s got everything. His first step is maybe at least two yards, so he’s got everything."

The only question mark LSU has is their DL. Now Clemson's front line is loaded! I would take LSU's DB's and LB's over Clemsons.
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | August 06, 2018 at 02:12 PM
DB'S are only as good as the front line in front of them.
Posted by: herbieibis | August 06, 2018 at 02:50 PM
I'm expecting LSU line to be good even though they lost players. It's kind of like us. We lost 3 starters, but our DL will probably be better this year than last year.

TBC trying to pass on a Rosier article, unfortunately the pass will sail 10 yards over WWIN's head.
Both TBC and WWIN will later concur and agree that the incompletion was due to Richt's play-calling.

I am so, so, so hopeful he has a huge year, but everyone would have to acknowedge it's a concern when a fifth year senior is still talking about mechanics and accuracy.
Miami Hurricanes quarterback Malik Rosier knows he’s not perfect. He’s working on it
BY SUSAN MILLER DEGNAN

August 06, 2018 02:16 PM
University of Miami quarterback Malik Rosier knows he’s not perfect.
Be assured that he’s working on it.
And be assured that Rosier took a deep, cleansing breath when he learned on July 18 that coach Mark Richt made it official in every way except, perhaps, with a printed depth chart, that the fifth-year senior would be the starting quarterback in 2018 — or at least for the Sept. 2 opener against LSU.
Rosier broke into a smile and took a few seconds to quietly laugh
“I think it was kind of a sigh of relief,” he said.
Rosier, however, is not letting up. Anything but. After throwing 10 of his 14 interceptions during the last six weeks of UM’s 2017 campaign, he knew he’d have to improve his accuracy to have a shot at leading the Canes again. He threw for 3,120 yards and 26 touchdowns last season and ran for another 468 yards and five scores.
But those picks...
He said Monday that one of his shortcomings last season was not grasping the total on-field picture.
“Sometimes I would kind of get funneled into seeing one side of the field,’’ Rosier said, “and now I’m seeing the whole field. It’s a lot better.
“The receivers are making plays for me all over the field and I told them guys, ‘I’m going to protect you. You’ve just got to catch the ball.’’’
Those receivers are as plentiful and talented as they’ve been in many years, Rosier confirmed.
“You don’t have guys tiring out,’’ he said. “You go from Ahmmon [Richards] to Darrell [Langham] to Evidence [Njoku] to [Dee] Wiggins at X; You’ve got got [Lawrence] Cager, [Mark] Pope, [Brian] Hightower at Z; Jeff [Thomas], [Mike] Harley and Quez [Ezzard] at Y.
“We’ve got guys that can move, we’ve got guys that can play, so, I think the best thing here now [is] we’ve got fresh guys coming in every play. Now we don’t have to worry about getting someone hurt or someone being fatigued as much.”
The two specifics, according to Rosier, that Richt and personal quarterbacks coach David Morris have stressed repeatedly regarding how to improve his accuracy:
▪ Shortening his throwing motion
▪ Reducing his stride
“Sometimes I overstride, which gets my body wide, gets my arm down and [Morris] said, I’m starting to overthrow balls. Those were the two biggest things I worked on,” Rosier said.
“My accuracy, it’s not even me being accurate, all the guys are accurate. I’m pretty sure Cade [Weldon] was throwing 80 percent yesterday. Kosi [Perry] was in the 70s. I was like in the 70s-plus.
“We have guys…it’s not even me, it’s like, everybody, Jarren [Williams] —we’re competing, man. And it’s so good to know that, like the guys behind me, if something happens to me we’re going to have a guy that can step up and make plays.”
Rosier will be pushed this season by redshirt freshmen N’Kosi Perry and Cade Weldon, neither of whom have played in a college game. And then there’s true freshman Jarren Williams, who had an impressive spring and became the newest darling of Hurricanes fans.
“Even though I’m the starter,’’ he said, “if I come out and have a bad day, [Richt] can be like, ‘Hey, listen, Kosi’s the guy, or Cade’s the guy. I can’t just let my guard down. I still have to compete, still have to come out here and show these guys that I am the guy and I can be the starter.”
Rosier, who looks thicker and stronger at 6-1 and 212 pounds, said he’s “100-percent’’ healthy after playing through serious shoulder pain the last part of the season.
What Rosier wants to prove most at this point, after failing to lead the Canes to victory not only against Pittsburgh in the regular-season finale, but against Clemson in the Atlantic Coast Conference title game and Wisconsin in the Capital One Orange Bowl, is that he can win the big ones.
“People know I can win,’’ he said, “but I feel like the bigger games you win, the more noticed you get.
“And it’s not even just me. I feel like we went a long way and we did something that Miami’s never done, but we didn’t finish right. That’s the chip on my shoulder.
“It’s also my last year. I’m trying to leave a legacy. I’m trying to leave my last statement as ‘Hey, we won the ACC Championship, hey, we played for the national championship.’
“ I want to bring Miami back because we’ve got the talent to do it.”
