His Majesty The Dude on High

Hey everybody....

Apparently CMR said he's not ready to name a starter at QB yet... 😐

His Majesty The Dude on High

solar,

AR needs to get himself back on the field if he wants the NFL next year. He hasnt been elite since Kaaya. Cant blame him too much though, Rosier couldnt get him the ball consistently enough. My guess is he'll suddenly be more healthy if Perry starts...

solarcane

Dude,
I agree with you about AR responding positively to Perry starting.
It was effortless for Richards to run under Kaaya's long passes.
You could see his frustration coming back to the bench after Rosier threw a potential td or 1st down behind him.
Maybe number 5 will be the tonic AR needs to suck it up and play through stuff.
Remember how Canes like Shockey
seemed oblivious to pain and injuries and just took care of business?

His Majesty The Dude on High

Posted by: solarcane | September 23, 2018 at 12:36 AM

Yes. I know its not the right thing to do, but Rosier has been costing Richards money.

His Majesty The Dude on High

I say we go as high as #15 this week, and if we really put it on UNC, as high a #10 the following week as a lot of teams in front of us have tough games again.

WWIN

I'll have to disagree... Rosier has great chemistry with AR82 and Langham. He was injured in fall camp before Rosier ever started.

AfriCane

Fock the polls! That’s what they get for rating teams like BC. Then they rate VT over us? A bunch of other teams that r sorry! Fock then all. I say we just keep winning and then we see where we r at year’s end.

BigWindyCane

According to the ESPN matchup predictor, the Canes are currently favored in every remaining game on their regular season schedule.

Perry made a great case for him to be the starter moving forward. It seems that CMR was preparing Perry for this transition if Rosier continues to struggle. Rosier started the FIU game sluggish. I don’t think he was playing well that first two series. Perry showed he is ready. Perry needs to minimize the freshman mistakes, but it’s obvious to even the casual Canes fan that his upside is much greater.

Rosier has done a lot in leading the Canes to their first ACC championship game and the Orange Bowl as well. But Perry has the potential to help the Canes return to those games and win those games.

If Perry gets JT and AR back, this offense can be as explosive as it gets

BigWindyCane

Homer looked like a RB who could play in the NFL. Homer ran harder and fought for every yard. He ran with a sense of urgency. I guess the competition of having Dallas and Lingard in the running back room really woke him up. CMR and Coach Brown have sent a message that Reps aren’t given on this team, they must be earned.

Even Camron Davis looked good. Choc also got a very nice 3rd down run. This is the deepest RB room the Canes have had in well over a decade.

TonyCane

I’m still wait and see. Too many cases of QBs doing outstanding in game one, only to fall back to earth as future opponent begin to have game film to study them.

BEERicane

I think we should hold out Richards and Johnson for UNC. I want them fully healthy for FSU so we can really beat the shit out of them. We should beat UNC easily without them.

Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | September 22, 2018 at 11:12 PM

Agreed. I want to beat them by 42+. Just destroy them. Never hear their lame band that annoying war chant nonsense. I want to see tears pouring down the faces on the Noles sideline and from their fans in the stands. And I’ll just point and laugh at all of them. Then, I’ll go up to willie taggert and give him a handshake and a bro-hug to thank him for the memory.

I don't think this had anything to do with Rosier I think it was more so to do with Perry just being ready. CMR had already told Perry he would play the 3rd series before the game started. Malik didn't do anything wrong, but once Perry got in and was on fire you have to let him keep playing.

I applaud CMR for finally having the balls to do something like this... I personally didn't think he had it in him. Next step for him is talking to Malik and starting Perry this Thursday!

Go Canes!!

Some great highlights Perry from the game

Kid consistently delivers a catchable ball with good zip on it.

Think after the announced suspension @ LSU, CMR handled this this pretty perfectly. Kept Rosier focused and Perry hungry, then made the switch in a game Nosi had the best opportunity to play well and succeed

No way he doesn’t start at UNC imo.

Go Canes!!

Here are the highlights:

CGNC

Had a blast at the game. But it was HOT. Entire offense looked more animated/excited once #5 went in there. Definitely could see it. Defense also because they got to rest LOL.

Feagles was better but FIU had a really good punter. Bubba Baxa did a good job also.

Bring on the Tar Holes (as the Duke fans say). Will be at the game!

His Majesty The Dude on High

The offense looked way more like an offense. Throws short, throws to the middle, throws over LBs... All Rosier ever did was chuck the ball deep and pray Cager or Thomas came down with it.

Go Canes!!

Posted by: His Majesty The Dude on High | September 23, 2018 at 10:45 AM

Perry consistently got the ball out quickly and hit his receivers in stride, giving them max opportunity to use their skills in the open field. And when he had to lay it in over the top, he did that too.

Small sample size, but loved what I saw. Have a feeling we’re going to see it a lot more going forward.

UMike

Once Perry was in the game it seemed our play calling changed as well. We threw accross the middle, ran a wheel route, screens etc. Seems the young guys were excited as well. Having Thomas back and adding the deep threat should open things up.

UMike

I don't want to to worry about the polls right now, we need to win. Just because VT lost and FSU has looked bad doesn't mean that are automatically wins. FSU started horrible last year and we needed a last minute drive to win. We can win, but won't be easy. Just win and the polls will take care of themselves

solarcane

Dude,
I think about 18 or 19.
Kentucky being a SEC darling will somehow wind up in front of us. I think the AP guys are gun shy to rank us very high, and with good reason given our history of laying a turd whenever they give us respect.

BigWindyCane1

Didn’t know the Canes have play making tight ends until PERRY got in the game. I didn’t realize Cager has run-after-the-catch ability until Perry put the ball in a position where he could catch and gets some YAC. I didn’t realize that HARLEY could contribute like he did yesterday. Harley had a career day.

Every playmaker had a better chance of utilizing their talent with Perry under Center. CMR deserves credit for making the move, and even more credit if Perry turns out to be the permanent answer at QB

thirstybuzzardcane

Feagles was better but FIU had a really good punter. Bubba Baxa did a good job also.

Canes are #16 in ESPN power rankings, SB Nation, and Amway Coaches Poll. Tied at #15 in other polls

solarcane

Windy
you are right, every receiver
out there expects the ball to come to them now. That makes for good vibes.
Braxton B was the only guy Rosier seemed confident to throw to (at)under duress, and that was only because Brax was part acrobat.
Perry throws darts right on the numbers almost each pass from what I saw. Perry looked off defenders a couple times, that is already an improvement from his first couple outings.

BigWindyCane

Canes are now ranked #16 in both the Coaches and AP Polls

His Majesty The Dude on High

I told y'all #15 or #16. 😎

Next point about the O under Perry. The bubble screen should kind of be a bread and butter play for us because if executed correctly, it gives great athletes a chance to bust a big one with little risk. Since CMR & Dugs came to The U, WR blocking has become among the best in CF, and with Perry's sharp passing, the ball is there in a split second and the defense has to make a tackle on the like of Thomas, Harley, Pope or Richards (when healthy). Should the defense slide the safety over to help, BAM!!! we will have TEs toasting LBs and big plays over the top to speedy players, or 1 on 1 match ups to taller WRs like Cager, Hightower & Langham. Rosier cant even through the bubble screen people. Its never sharp, it tends to be behind the WR or in the dirt or too close (or even into) the sidelines. Rosier looks more comfortable at QB than Perry, but what does it matter if he cant complete over 50% of his passes? I'll take the QB that tosses 65%, 4 TDs and 1 INT, over the QB that throws 48% 1 TD and 0 INT any day.

His Majesty The Dude on High

*Correction* If the safety comes over to help with the bubble screens, it wont be over the top, but into the middle where there may be no safety.

Few more moves left for CMR...

1. Try a new punter
2. Move Hall ahead of Knowles
3. Move Donaldson back to guard

Idk about starting, but he definitely should have got more reps, especially against Toledo. I feel like its this teams duty, from coaches to players, heck even the janitors have got to get Perry comfortable with as much as possible. He has to much arm talent to be sitting behind Rosier at this point. Start Perry on Thursday.

His Majesty The Dude on High

1. Do we have another? Seriously Idk.
2. Yes.
3. Agreed, it makes our run game much better.
4. He kind of is.
5. Hmm... I doubt Scaife is a tackle at the college level. If he makes a debut there, I would think start him at RT and see how he does. The problem is St. Louis really isnt that good on either side, even if the right is his best. This team is seriously lacking OT talent. If we just had a Linder type at RT we'd be okay. We need 3 OTs for the '19 cycle.

Some of the posts on here are truly lol worthy.

Blame CMR for not making the switch sooner?

Just wondering when he was supposed to do it? Up only two scored on the road at Toledo in the second half?

Or maybe in the meaningless Savannah State game?

No wait, how about the LSU game he was home for because he was suspended?

He has literally handled this situation perfectly.

Kept the team as together as he could while handling a disciplinary issue with Perry that caused his suspension. Brought him in early, at home, and let him take off. He played great, there’s no QB controversy, he’ll start the most winnable game possible against UNC in preparation for the FSU game.

Complainers gotta complain.

orange 'n green in the vein

Figured before suspensions were announced going into the year this would be the most difficult opponent in the division.

Almost impossible to get a read on UNC because of the suspensions so don't get drawn into a shootout, have the defense play their best first to 30 wins game and maybe that rust holds them to 21 instead, then hope the short week is something Smart Mark finally has a read on at this point.

Against Toledo up 14? IMO, yes, thats when I would have liked to see it. Richt said he thought about it at 21, but he said he's been around too long and seen to many crazy things happen. He said if he had more courage, he would have at 21. Me, I would have liked to see the kid at 14 up just to see what he's made of for a series when it still kind of matters, but you are safe enough to go back to Rosier should he not be ready. Its all in personal taste, but CMR did it his way, and he's earned the right to do so. The real take home here is that its clear it had to be done, and it was.

He’s right TD. Look at VT against winless ODU yesterday. Turned into a shootout and look how that one ended. Game was dangerous and MalIk was as well as he could.

Think the timing was right, pre-scripted against FIU. And thankfully he did what we hoped he would, took the job by the throat and made it a very easy decision for CMR.

His Majesty The Dude on High

Posted by: Go Canes!! | September 23, 2018 at 06:57 PM

There's an old saying about skinning cats. His way worked out, my way could also. Like I said, it doesnt matter, he's the coach and he gets to make the timing call, the important thing is that he did. Now its up to everyone to get this kid ready. Did you notice the O started to get a little pep in their step when Perry was dealing? They seem to know what he can do.

His Majesty The Dude on High

Shotgun Ace Set is gonna look terrifying soon, like old times... just need that OL to get situated. A decent QB could help it out.

Cager, Thomas, OL, Jordan, Richards
Perry & Dallas

Whew! With the right OL, thats playoff caliber.

His Majesty The Dude on High

On my eyeball test, there are 5 teams ahead of that we'd beat and another 4 I believe we can beat on any given Saturday at a neutral site. Bama, Clemson, UGA, OSU & maybe Oklahoma are out of our league. Auburn, UW & LSU are maybe slightly better than us imo.

Go Canes!!

Wtf are you talking about? Dabo is literally doing identically what CMR has done with Perry.

Lawrence has yet to start a game and went in the 3rd series against GT yesterday, the same series Perry did. He completely outplayed Bryant and will likely be named a starter this week.

Any of that sound familiar?

BigWindyCane

I saw Perry throw at camps and he was very impressive. I also saw him during warmups at Canes games, and I was also impressed with Perry’s talent at that time, but Perry wasn’t physically ready.

Perry has put on about 20 pounds since high school, so I predicted that Rosier and Perry would compete in fall camp, and PERRY would be given a shot to win the job. With all the hype about Rosier’s improvements and hard work over the summer, and CMR’s public comments about Rosier being his starter early in fall camp was a little surprising, but I went along with it because I felt CMR knew best. Then I saw Rosier play against LSU, Savannah St., and Toledo and I was left scratching my head. Then I saw Perry play against Savannah St. and I continued to scratch my head.

Then, yesterday after the second series, I saw Perry warming up, and I knew at that time that the Canes season was about to change.

I am so happy with what I saw yesterday, but I also acknowledge that Perry still has a lot to learn. If Perry continues to develop, there is not team in college football that the Canes can’t beat. As a matter of fact, the Canes could probably capably handle LSU in a rematch during bowl season.

5. I know Scaife is short, but his athleticism and aggression maybe just what we need. I think he can knock ends off the ball right now in the run game. Gerald Willis is a great reason to love the Canes. A player that UF gave up on, CMR and his staff were patient and developed one of the most dominant DTs in college football. Another person I am also happy to see out there is Patchtan. APatchan obviously isn’t as dominant, but he is pretty solid. CMR and his staff remained patient through all his knee injuries and moved him around on offense and defense, finding a spot for him to contribute in a substantial way.

CMR seems to be more patient and dedicated to his players. That’s a college coach I can cheer for.

Richt lied to everyone- rosier did not get better - in fact he makes EVERYONE around him worse. I am willing to take Perry’s mistakes but upside over rosier anyday.

Nationally, the Canes are #1 in TFL, #1 in opp. third down conversions and #2 in total defense. Through 1/3 of the regular season, the Canes are truly elite on defense. A few more turnovers, and this could compare favorably to some of the best defenses the Canes have had since the early 2000s.

Also through the first 1/3 of the regular season, I am also looking at the Canes improvement on offense over last season in key statistics - third down conversions and points per game, and that is very impressive given that the Canes are not generating as many turnovers. Also unlike last season, there is much more unrealized potential in this Canes offense.

The OL is still improving and gelling, Lingard has not reached his potential yet, Homer and Dallas are just getting started and Perry just got his first real playing time without JT in the lineup. In addition, there is still the prospect that AR could get healthy and return.

If CMR taps into this potential, this could truly be an elite offense in college football by the end of the season.

Nice post BWC- I agree but the big if is ‘richt’ - I think with Perry he will be more comfortable opening the playbook up

I’ve been saying since last season that Malik wasn’t the answer. Not sure what you mean.

I also think Perry wasn’t ready last year. By his own admission he’d never even broken down film before and burning his redshirt after 10-11 games would have been crazy.

This season he was suspended for LSU, played extensively against SS and likely would have against Toledo had the game gotten too close for comfort but Malik playing well.

CMR prescripted his FIU entrance and Perry took full advantage of the opportunity, snatching the job away from Rosier like everyone hoped.

Turning this into a blame thing when wee 3-1 and appear to have our bQB issues heading in the right direction is just the way some people deflect away from their insane comments about how good Rosier is and how it’s everyone else’s fault.

BTW NP is taking the first team reps followed by MR, CW, JW.

With Perry, the receivers and running backs, and an inovative oc that takes advantage of his players strengths we would be a legitimate top 5 to 10 team We wouldn't break out in a cold sweat everytime we faced a ranked team.

I like having a defense that plays with reckless abandon and creates mayhem. I don't sweat giving up a score once in awhile just because they are going 100 mph constantly.

This is the closest to Hurricane football I have seen in many years.

A lot of high school kids see our 2 and third team guys and true freshmen playing, this is a great tool in helping them decide about playing now on a top 10 team versus playing as a junior somewhere else.
