Six Hurricanes finished in double figures to lead the University of Miami men's basketball team past crosstown foe Barry University, 91-61, Tuesday night at the Watsco Center in the team's lone exhibition game of the fall.
Junior forward Dewan Hernandez led all scorers with 19 points and added a game-high 10 rebounds to record a double-double.
Junior guard Dejan Vasiljevic also chipped in, as he totaled 17 points and five rebounds, converting on all seven of his attempts from the charity stripe. Redshirt senior Zach Johnson also finished with 17 points on Tuesday night.
Stuffing the stat sheet, senior guard Anthony Lawrence II picked up a game-high eight assists and three blocks, to go along with 11 points, eight rebounds and a steal.
Senior center Ebuka Izundu (13 points) and sophomore guard Chris Lykes (10 points) rounded out the sextuplet of Canes who finished the night in double figures.
As a team, the Hurricanes shot an efficient 56.1-percent (32-of-57) from the field, converting on 10 long range shots, while the defense blocked seven shots and held the Buccaneers to 26-of-72 (36.1-percent) from the field.
Overall, the Hurricanes closed out the half on 27-19 run to head into the locker room leading, 41-33, as Vasiljevic led all-scorers with 13 points in the period shooting a perfect 5-of-5 from the charity stripe.
Out of the locker room, the Hurricanes came out firing on all cylinders going on to outscore the Buccaneers 50-28 in the second stanza. Johnson and Hernandez led the attack in the half, as both notched 15 points in the final 20 minutes of play.
Hernandez finished the period shooting a perfect 7-of-7 from the field, including a 3-pointer, as the team shot an efficient 17-of-27 (63.0-percent) from the field.
Evan Walshe led the Buccaneers with 14 points and six rebounds, the lone Barry student-athlete to reach double figures.
Miami opens the regular season at home on Nov. 9 against Lehigh with tipoff set for 7 p.m., and will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra.

DTX,
its not that there arent smart football people on the BoT, its that theres some that are and some that arent and when trouble comes, they take too long to take action while they squabble over details, see Al Golden. We need a Football AD that hires/fires coordinators when the HC refuses to, and doesnt let the HC take the program down with him.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 31, 2018 at 07:41 PM
TD it’s been 2 1/2 seasons and two real recruiting classes.
We aren’t even at 85 scholarship players yet.
We can’t be churning and burning coaches every three years forever.
Agree CMR has to add an aggressive young offensive mind. Let’s see what he does.

DTX,
I thought you and I already had the discussion years ago about posting logical thought out comments, versus spur of the moment emotion fueled opinions.
You are gonna have people stopping to think out their comments and just slow the blogging to a crawl.
Posted by: solarcane | October 31, 2018 at 07:17 PM
LOL Solar. Great point. EVERYTHING is on rewind I guess. And we thought the OL was bad back in 08... so, many apologies 86!... last thing I want is for the blob to slow to a crawl and U to shut it all down out of frustration!!
Dude - I don’t disagree on what I’d like to see happen... a dedicated OC and a HC that busts someone’s arse for our pitiful ST and awfense. But think on this - any AD that gets involved forcing coaching decisions on a HC creates a situation where the HC authority is questioned and where if you do fire the HC, what other coach will want to come work for that AD?
Posted by: DallasTX Cane | October 31, 2018 at 08:28 PM
We should all understand that so called Smart Mark
needs to stay as Head coach Simply because the U is in to deep financially to just fire his sorry butt.
He can best serve the U at this point as a Head coach who hires an real offensive coordinator, who should be able to pick his own quarterback coach. they should hire a real offensive line coach and special teams coach. Then smart Mark could focus on recruiting and doing what he dose best talking to the parents of these kids presenting the great attributes of the University of Miami and how he will nurture their kids through the very hard time of their life.Do these things along with all the other thing he is doing at the U.
With good coaches we would then be getting more 4* AND 5* recruits and Mark could do his thing, then we would become a top 5 program again year after year.. I truly miss those days.
Posted by: Harry Miller | October 31, 2018 at 08:29 PM
Best case scenario for sure, Harry Miller.
Posted by: DallasTX Cane | October 31, 2018 at 08:33 PM
One more thing Smart Mark needs to understand "you
are not going to be any better then the (in this case) the coaches under you. I have all ways used this principle in my life and it has worked out very well.

At the end of the day, its still Miami and there will always be coaches that want to coach here. Would Nick Saban or Urban Meyer? No, but those guys are coming here right now anyways. Would quality coaches like Dan Mullen? Absolutely. I believe MR can win here, but he can not be the OC next season. He had about 5 games where the O really hummed out of 30. We cant let him drag us down any more, we are at a tipping point, a time for action. We cant wait to see how this thing plays out, we need to hire Mark Helfrich when he's in our office.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | October 31, 2018 at 10:29 PM
No, but those guys *arent* coming here right now anyways.

We haven't been at 85 in over 5 years.
If ever there would be a year for us to rule the state in recruiting, it should have been this year but slowly but surely we are flushing old mo down the toilet with this pedestrian like nofence.
The 5 star wr from Georgia wants to go to a school who throws the ball down field, I hope he hasn't been watching this dink and dunk show. If we somehow had the upper hand, we blew that.

Do you think Richt should be fired?
Posted by: Go Canes!! | November 01, 2018 at 09:27 AM
We ain't firing Richt.
He just needs a little nudging from the powers above him the drop the title of OC.
Also to make a few other adjustments, namely cutting the apron strings to his son and go find another O-Line coach.
There are things Richt is good at. But he he needs to be an overseer and get some passion and energy. He's bringing this firestorm down on his own stubborn ass.
He needs to ask himself one simple question: Is The Juice Worth The Squeeze?
Posted by: Herbieibis | November 01, 2018 at 10:16 AM
Go I'm not at that point yet, but I believe if he doesn't hire a OC or drastically changed his offense then yes he should.

Add me to those who agree with Herbie. A little critical self-reflection on Mark's part would go a long way. As Harry Callahan said "A man's got to know his limitations". The numbers don't lie (statistics do) and there are a lot of numbers going back a lot of years.
Posted by: Old Skool | November 01, 2018 at 10:53 AM
I dont think he (MR) should be allowed/trusted to be the one that oversees drastic changes in the offense. He is 100% responsible for our situation and should have to pay the price for it as OC. Furthermore, its too much to HC and OC, he needs to choose 1 or the other anywayn he can be HC at Miami, or step down and go OC at Wake Forest or somewhere. New OC or bust.
P.S. Mark Helfrich was in his office and he thought he didnt need him, lol.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | November 01, 2018 at 11:41 AM
Let’s be realistic for a moment:
• does anyone, having hearing richt speak, think he is going to make any changes?
• does anyone think that BJ or the BOT have the guts to force him to make changes?
• does anyone think - IF changes are made - that richt will all of a sudden become a changed HC and be aggressive, have passion, and go for the jugular?
I think ‘no’ to the above, so I think fire him! Let’s step back 1 step to move forward 5! Just my opinion.
Posted by: AeroCane | November 01, 2018 at 11:49 AM
He’s currently the head coach of a team with a defense that’s uber aggressive and constantly goes for the jugular isn’t he?

Go

Looking at this analytically - Rozier and possibly Perry have two more games left. Rozier was a Golden holdover. Perry was a Golden recruit for Coley’s offense that Richt felt could work in his. Jaren Williams is Richt’s first recruit, and he can play the last two games and the bowl without losing eligibility. I think Richt is ready to go with Jarren as the future, but doesn’t want to lose that year of eligibility.
Posted by: TonyCane | November 01, 2018 at 12:37 PM
Tony
Good points but incorrect
How can he lose Williams eligibility if he can play in 4 games? Richt has a great reason to use him a lot in those 4 games. Could JW have done worse than Rosier or Perry in the VA/BC games? Let him get his experience within the 4 game guidelines
Posted by: AeroCane | November 01, 2018 at 12:42 PM
To further clarify...if a Playoff berth is no longer achievable, if the Coastal is out of reach, is it worth it to start Jarren for the last five games of the season and lose that eligibility, or if you are the head coach do you wait two more weeks and then play him? There are arguments on both sides for this. Neither is necessarily bad.
We will win this week. I’m not concerned about it whatsoever. Miami 36, Duke 17.

Posted by: AeroCane | November 01, 2018 at 12:44 PM
As to your second post - I agree with the start Williams, let him take his lumps and who cares about the year of eligibility- it’s a total waste of rosier is the qb, and I said a week or 2 ago, I have no doubts that Perry will transfer. Again, jmo
Posted by: AeroCane | November 01, 2018 at 12:47 PM
Aero, good points. My own thought is that once you pull the trigger on Jarren, there is a strong likelihood that you never look back. You don’t play him at BC and Virginia only to sit him later in the season. I’m fairly confident that it will be clear he’s the future. Once he’s in, the difference will be about as clear as it was at the end of 1999 between Dorsey and Kenny Kelly. You really can’t sit him at that point, so now you lose a year of eligibility.
Jarren already played in one game, so he has three games left.
Posted by: TonyCane | November 01, 2018 at 12:49 PM
Posted by: AeroCane | November 01, 2018 at 12:29 PM
Why? You asked IF changes were made would Richt suddenly be agressive didn’t you?
Well he’s letting Manny be aggressive as hell with the defense right now. I don’t think he has any issue being aggressive with the right personnel. I think his biggest issue is overcompensating for horrible qb play and the design of his plays.
Jmo.

I have tried every year since the 2005

After dozens and dozens of candidates
To me this describes the Miami Hurricanes football program perfectly.

The Pimp can't even save this horrible football season.
Well, it's November. Has UM's offensive line in 2018:
A) Fully gelled as a five man front;
B) 3/4ths gelled as a five man front;
C) 1/2 gelled as a five man front;
or D) not gelled at all as a five man front;
at this point?
Feel free to round up if you're feeling generous or are a sid-tard working a Fake Lames' talking point. If you're the latter, round up and then choke on a bag of dicks until you stop breathing like every other day you shat up the blob with your garbage.

I see your point but you missed mine. Aggressive to me is: starting off with the intent to score and embarrass the opponent; aggressive is when your leading by 3 you keep the petal to the metal - NOT hoping we hang on for the V! Aggressive to me is up by 35, and having subs in with the petal to the metal - if not they aren’t getting the true experience they need and WANT;
It’s actually wanting explosive plays - NOT, at halftime down by 3 telling the person ‘we are only down by 3, we don’t need explosive plays!’
I said it before, this is college and needs to be fun, exciting and explosive! It’s all about winning and recruiting! Right now, we are doing little of either!

I was at the Citrus Bowl year before last (as I’m sure a bunch of U were). Our O in the first 1/2 was every bit as bad as it is now. But played like a totally different team in the 2nd 1/2. That game ended up being a blowout when we came in as underdogs.
It’s driving me as crazy as all of U but I also can’t help but think the OC/HC of that 2nd 1/2 was as aggressive and pedal to the metal as I’ve seen. How is that the same guy we’ve seen the last year?

I won’t say right or wrong cause that is up to each fan; but with the 40 or so business clients I consult for, I have a saying: sometimes we need to take a step or 2 back to really leap forward!
So I suggest this: we win all remaining games, and richt decides he doesn’t want to coach anymore cause it’s no fun, and retires!

What is worse than being a Canes fan?
Being a Canes and Raiders fan....Raiders are horrible.
What is a worse hire than CMR? John Gruden.
Gruden is not a good coach barely .500...he won at TB with a team built by T Dungy....after that blip, he was not real good.
The Raiders are very bad ...bad football.
UM bad football.....hard being a fan of both...at least we have won 5...Oakland is so bad!!!!
On other notes, at least my guys are 7-0...really really good.
Good to see some good football on Saturdays!!!!
Richt needs to focus totally on recruiting...only!
We need a really dynamic OC and OL coach....CMR should let others handle on field issues...he just cannot see the big picture.
Posted by: VA Cane | November 01, 2018 at 10:13 PM
I do like him, but he just seems oblivious to the lack of commitment, the apathy around him. son is probably a nice guy too...just not a very good OC...our plays look pretty bad....nothing fluid or imaginative very easy to read and defend.
Posted by: VA Cane | November 01, 2018 at 10:25 PM
Go Canes...what you don't get is that people live really HARD lives every day. We do not get paid millions of dollars to coach or play a game. We all struggle to survive, feed our families, make our way.
We expect "Our Team" to do the same.
If we went to work at Ford, and we lost market share and sales daily to Chevy (Alabama) and Kia (Clemson), we would try to do something to fix it. We would develop sales strategies, favorable market comparisons or pricing to succeed.
The Canes can't keep losing and do NOTHING to fix it because then there is nothing to keep them "competitive" in the market. They will lose games, lose market share (recruiting) and eventually have to hire new management (coaches/AD) to become competitive.
It is a simple business equation, no emotion needed. As fans we feel so attached to the "business" of college sports. As administrators and coaches they know the deal. It is wins and losses and forward momentum that drives the train of success.
Our train at UM has run OFF the tracks for 14 years and four coaches. Eventually the business needs a recovery plan or we will go into (financial, coaching and talent) bankruptcy.
That is a bad place to be.

My perspective is I cant' for the life of me understand anyone coming on here and say they are rooting for us to lose our final four games, finish under .500, miss out on a bowl, destroy recruiting and completely demorailze our base so we can fire the head coach.
If you think that way, sorry you're a fool and your perspective is so warped you need to start rooting for another team.
Posted by: Go Canes!! | November 02, 2018 at 05:19 AM
Posted by: 86Cane | November 01, 2018 at 10:45 PM
How do I not get that? Because I think it's insane to want to lose our last four games? Talk about a warped perspective
We need to make changes to our offensive play calling and design. Everyone knows that. But any OC in the country would struggle making the glaring lack of talent under center excel when we literally have no idea whee the ball will go every time it leaves his hands.
Anyone rooting for 0-4 should be ashamed and embarrassed, not making it seem like they're so smart they know this is the best thing in some long term master plan.
Posted by: Go Canes!! | November 02, 2018 at 05:32 AM
Per GO:
We need to make changes to our offensive play calling and design. Everyone knows that. But any OC in the country would struggle making the glaring lack of talent under center excel when we literally have no idea whee the ball will go every time it leaves his hands.
Ok - who’s effing job is it to recruit and coach up - it’s mark richt
Ok - who’s job is it to choose the right guy to play - it’s mark richt
There are teams playing freshman qbs - why isn’t he playing Williams
- we all know rosier sucks and obviously richt does not think Perry is the guy; it’s up to richt to play the right guy and coach him up and put in the plays to make him and the team successful. A good OC would not have rosier playing, and would have a young more talented guy starting with a scheme to effing score points and win. No more effing excuses for our terrible OC and terrible qb coach!

I think Notre Dame's situation in 2016 when they went 4 and 8 is giving me some optimism. If Richt can reflect and be willing to change things and get coordinator help like Brian Kelly did we can turn things around. We have enough talent to be a good/very good football team.

My perspective is I cant' for the life of me understand anyone coming on here and say they are rooting for us to lose our final four games, finish under .500, miss out on a bowl, destroy recruiting and completely demoralize our base so we can fire the head coach.

I never said that, AeroCane did, and I don't agree. I predicted a victory already over Duke 34-13 and want the Canes to win the rest of their games. That's where I stand.
But I do understand the other way of thinking. Here is what I think he (and others) is really trying to say: If we win our remaining four games, go to a bowl and win, then everything will seem "fine" and no changes would be needed, or occur or be demanded.
No changes means three more years of not good enough 3-4 loss seasons, poor offense game planning, horrid play calling and awful execution and simply put, more misery. So to prevent that he wants more change sooner and only happens with a end of season collapse where change HAS to happen.
AeroCane and others who think this way really don't want the Canes to lose the last four games but what they really want is to be assured of change and improvement this off-season.
They can correct me if I am wrong?

Let's see, we lost 4 in a row in 2016. We lost another 4 in a row, 3 at the end of 2017 and the first game in 2018. Now we are on a 2 game losing streak. What does it say about Richt, he is lousy making adjustments and to slow at stopping the leaks.
The Herb sees this game as a toss up. Oh they will be fired up to play at home and thank God for that because we suck on the road, however with the m
Keep things close to the vest and let the defense win the game for us, I see a squeaka.
Question, When's the last time we took our first possession down the field and s scored? Uh me either. When's the last time we led by more than 7 pts. Uh, a minute or two. U dam well better believe he is going to g to try and run it down the cookies throat first. When that doesn't work, then it's time for his new found love for the slant. Anyone u get the idea.
Cane's, in overtime 27-24.

Ok - who’s job is it to choose the right guy to play - it’s mark richt
There are teams playing freshman qbs - why isn’t he playing Williams
Posted by: AeroCane | November 02, 2018 at 08:53 AM
This is such an easy position to take. Can't have a conversation about all that ails us offensively if the fall back is why can't he get the true freshman ready.

All very fair points.
Don't see the toss up part though.
They haven't been able to do anything against us offensively since Manny got here and this is his best defense he's had. That spells a long night for Jones and company imo.
Agree with Soup, Canes mucho-Duke poco.

Remember during much of Brad's junior year, several freshmen were playing much better than him?

Soup
I didn’t say that
Elliott did - my response was ‘let’s win the rest and have richt retire’
My position is: play the young guys, be aggressive, have fun, and with our talent we will win more than not

Didn't it take Dabo a good while to get Clemson rolling?
We, and I include myself are desperate to see some light in the tunnel.
When my rational brain is working, I understand there are a lot of people in the program that know more than you or I know.
When my emotions boil over, and that is rare, I want to blame Richt for everything.
I am with DTX in thinking another HC is another 3 or 4 year building process
There are programs out there that don't have top 5 recruiting classes year in and year out, they function.
We need to start the season a realistic 20 to 25, play with no pressure to slip out of the top ten three weeks into a season.
Lets see if a new OC and some coaching changes happen...we aren't FSU yet
Posted by: solarcane | November 02, 2018 at 11:17 AM
Sorry AeroCane for the mistake.
Posted by: 86Cane | November 02, 2018 at 11:39 AM
Ok
So it’s unanimous- richt ain’t going nowhere
• questions:
• will he bring in a ‘real’ OC?
• If yes, who?
• will he fire seales and bring in a real OL coach?
• what will he do about special teams?
• what will he do in regards to his son?
These appear to be most of our key questions!
Soup, can you please forward to the BOT for us?

Preach 86! Both posts are fantastic.

Raize - will try and catch up with you I E2 where Kenny hangs out. Our seats are in 347, Row 12

Solar....I want FSU to remain exactly the way that they are for a long, long time. At least a decade.
One thing that becomes clear is that once you slip from the top, it can be VERY, very hard to get back. Let’s look at Texas and Florida. Both ceased to be national title contenders about 9 seasons ago. Both have gone through multiple coaching changes to try and get back to where they were. And neither are yet back.
Rationally, I think that Richt is not a quick fix. Sure, he’s improved the recruiting process immediately and has more funding, but rebuilding the roster takes time. And hitting in and then retaining the right assistants. My guess...my hope is that Richt’s path is like Dabo’s. Years of struggle and incremental building, followed by a sudden breakthrough. As I said yesterday, I suspect that in a short period we will get to see Jarren play, and maybe our offense begins to take a different path. Maybe.
A question for all of you...why isn’t DJ our primary back? It seems to me he’s generally been more productive than Travis.
Posted by: TonyCane | November 02, 2018 at 01:20 PM
I’m with you regarding DJ
More energetic as well! I actually thought we made a huge mistake not using lingard- guy is super dynamic and can truly takebit to the house at any time - that alone is huge!

I just can't understand the decision to start Rosier over Perry, at least based on his performance on field. I know he threw a couple INTs but he is still light years better then Rosier.
Posted by: UMike | November 02, 2018 at 01:25 PM
This is my impression:
1) Until the end of the VA game, a playoff spot was possible
2) Until the end of the BC game, a Coastal title was possible
Weighing against that, we have two quarterbacks:
Rozier: Knows the offense. Is a team leader. Probably maxed out upside and cannot make all the throws necessary to run the offense
Perry: May still not know the offense. Immaturity concerns. High upside and much more athletic than Rozier. Has a tendency to force passes and has yielded bad interceptions.
Perry’s downside emerged in force at Virginia. Rozier was inserted because - after all - he did lead Miami to 10 wins last year. Richt thought that the risk outweighed the reward at BC and again went with Rozier.
An additizonal thought - perhaps the offense is so limited because Rozier simply cannot physically execute it and Perry just has not mastered it. Perhaps we are just simply seeing a drastically scaled back version because of this.
Posted by: TonyCane | November 02, 2018 at 01:39 PM
Tony all good points... but shyt at least Perry can hit Thomas for a wide open TD lol...even Rosiers completions are bad passes and there is no yards after the catch.
Posted by: UMike | November 02, 2018 at 01:55 PM
I am not impressed with Rosier or Perry. That is All. Less impressed with our Offensive Line and Special Teams. That is All. Just win the damn Game. And hopefully the last couple games of the Year let's see what Jarren Williams have. And go out and sign a Grad Transfer and Sign a High School Grad QB in this class. Honestly It would not bother me after this season that with Rosier Graduating both Perry and Weldon go both seem like knuckleheads and ain't good enough to pull that crap off. Coach Richt and Offensive Staff is on the damn clock. Barbeque or Mildew. Go Canes Beat Duke!
