I definitely get what you're saying and I feel the same as you... we really don't need a WR... but pulling a kid of his caliber might make our other targets say you know what, if someone like him wants to go to UM I should jump on board too... and might help us land another QB this cycle.

You left out the word 'if' from my post.

Just saying we don't know... maybe he is better than our other receivers. Jeff Thomas doesn't have the size that Haselwood has.

Go Canes!!

You’ve been talking about both.

He went for it inside the 10 against FIU.

He went for it at midfield against FSU.

Neither has to do with special teams. He’s being aggressive and trusting his D.

NCAA Football Stats 2018: First Downs

Gray Crow’s playing time as a Miami Hurricane quarterback was limited to two games as a redshirt freshman, but his generosity will be broad reaching.

Crow, a former three-star recruit out of Clearwater Countryside when he arrived at UM in January of 2012 to participate in spring football, not only is donating $5,000 toward the Carol Soffer Football Indoor Practice Facility, but he has made a planned gift to UM, which in the future would set up a $500,000 endowment fund in his name to provide football scholarship support.

The commitment was his way of giving back to the Hurricanes, who gave him a scholarship that allowed him to not only play football, but to graduate in December of 2015 as a political science major.

Maybe he goes for it so much on 4th down because he has total confidence in his defense.

Posted by: Go Canes!! | October 12, 2018 at 10:15 AM

Maybe he goes for it on 4th down so much because his play calling is so horrendous that we can't get first downs on the first three plays of the drive like most other teams do?

Maybe we should wait til Perry has perhaps 4-5 freshman starts before fire anyone.

I know a lot on here complain about the play calling and i do understand. But after watching the FSU game again, he went for it on 4th down not once, not twice but three times.

Posted by: raizecane | October 12, 2018 at 09:27 AM

Raize...this is true and he does deserve credit for being aggressive and going for it. However, it was stated here previously by another blogger that ONE of the reasons he is motivated (or has to?) go for it is because the special teams are so bad there is a calculus of risk vs reward.

86Cane

1. But he's been an epic fail when it comes to coaching our special teams

2. This is a bigger issue than play calling imp.

Posted by: Go Canes!! | October 12, 2018 at 05:46 AM

1. We all can agree on this.

2. If it is so important (we agree) then something needs to be done about it. The coaching positions need to change or be restructured. Whether changes happen at OC, QB Coach or whatever we need a F/T special teams coach with extenisve experience and demonstrated competency in the critical area. It is 1/3 of the game after all. It cannot be ignored.

raizecane

I know a lot on here complain about the play calling and i do understand. But after watching the FSU game again, he went for it on 4th down not once, not twice but three times.

Had even one of those had failed, CMR would have been blasted on here so lets at least give kudos for having a set of balls going for it. It's a huge reason why we won that game.

Go Canes!!

Agree with Coach Diaz 100%. .

“What I loved is the difference between how we handled adversity in the LSU game as opposed to the FSU game. The games were very similar. Really, we were playing well and the field position was stacked dramatically against us in the first half. We gave up a touchdown when weren’t on the field defensively. We almost ended up in the exact same score as we were in the LSU game. LSU game we got very negative. There was no response.

“This game, the opposite. One of my favorite thing was after [Sheldrick] Redwine’s fumble, the attitude of our team on the field, celebrating. We were still down 20 points. Really, the attitude of the stadium, the fans’ part too. Theoretically, you’d say, ‘we’re still down 20.’ But it was not that way. It was very positive. As it was as if we believed that, at that moment, that that was a play that would turn the game around. It’s easy to say in hindsight. But at that moment, our guys were very upbeat and positive. That is where, from me, they get the most credit.”

Man watching teams with half our talent execute special teams flawlessly time after time is frustrating

Posted by: solarcane | October 11, 2018 at 10:37 PM

It's been catastrophically bad in all respects. Kicking, punting and return coverage.

I guess that's Hartley's gig which puts us in a bind. He, followed by Dugan are BY FAR our best recruiters and he's done a really good job develping our TEs. But he's been an epic fail when it comes to coaching our special teams.

We're giving up way too many yards, a penalty on practically every return and our punting has been abhorrant.

This is a bigger issue than play calling imp.

Go Canes!!

Every kid develops different. There are also things CMR may require, like going to class and showing an ability to handle certain other off field responsibilities, that other coaches may not.

That's not going to change.

Imo talent alone won't get you on the field. Knowing the playbook, understanding your blocking assignments and practicing hard every day factor in almost as much.

CMR and his coaches know whats going on with these kids better than any of us so I seriously doubt these sentences have been uttered at Greentree recently:

"Oh crap, there are Pope and Lingard, those kids we forgot about. Let's get them some plays."

or

"Shoot if we want to land that Haselwood kid, we need to play those other five stars we got last season."

No program in the country plays freshmen like we do, imo they just have to earn their snaps.

His Majesty The Dude on High

Posted by: WWIN | October 12, 2018 at 12:21 AM

That makes sense, Im just saying on our board he should still be ranked behind a lot of way more important guys (that we STILL havent landed).

1. 5* OT E. Neal
2. 4* DT B. Ingraham
3. 4* DE K. Bogle
4. 4* DE J.J. Weaver
5. 4* DE L. Summerall
6. 4* FS T. Stevenson
7. 5* CB A. Dent
8. 5* WR J. Haselwood
9. 4* TE K. Zipperer
10. 4* QB S. Howell

I dont know how much we are in it for any of these kids. but if the assumption is that we could land those kids, that would be my order of importance.

receivers are not a priority right now, we need to spend time finding a real punter, kicker and special teams coach

MLAlumni1970

I still Love Ken Dorsey. Awkward kid throwing, but look out, his throws were stupendous. Just loved that kid.
Does anyone know what he is doing now?? The U should have made him the Quarterback Coach years ago.
And Richt shouldn't be the offensive guy either. Handsome guy, but way too conservative.
I bet he's not on TOP!!

MLAlumni1970

I worry a lot about the game on Sat. Am I the only one?
Too bad we can't dress the "oldies" in the current uniforms, and let them bust all their touchdown moves.
But, Ed Reed may have to shave his beard!!

His Majesty The Dude on High

Richt has a history of easing players in, tends to play guys with better physiques earlier than those with elite speed or football ability. I dont think Richt would play games with current players to land a recruit, not ever. Haselwood isnt even that important to us if we are being honest.

WWIN

And is Greentree some type of magical oasis???

We heard...

Rosier was better, accuracy improved, he was checking em into better plays, making the defense defense pay for blitzing. 1st unit o-line was good, Donaldson was solid at tackle. Knowles was better, Pope was too good to keep off the field...etc...etc...

Or is somebody blind, playing the wrong players, or a combination of both?

Lingard and Pope should be on KR and PR anyways... THOMAS and Dallas are not the answer!

A six-pack of Canes notes on Thursday:

▪ As noted in my midseason awards, the five Hurricanes freshmen who have logged the most snaps all play on offense.

But what about the defensive freshmen? Perhaps the most ballyhooed of the bunch, defensive end Gregory Rousseau, is out potentially for the season with an ankle injury.

ADVERTISING

inRead invented by Teads
Per Herald correspondent Daniel Gould, among natural freshmen defensive players, cornerback D.J. Ivey has the most defensive snaps (69), followed by safety Gurvan Hall (68), cornerback Al Blades (62), defensive tackle Nesta Silvera (57), defensive end Patrick Joyner (22), cornerback Gilbert Frierson (18) and cornerback Nigel Bethel and defensive tackle Jordan Miller with 10 apiece.

Rousseau played 16 snaps before his injury.

Silvera hasn’t been needed a ton because Gerald Willis (257 snaps), Pat Bethel (177), Tito Odenigbo (99) and Jon Ford (89) have all played more.

“Coming in here, he’s a big-time player, all kind of expectations outside people have put on him,” defensive line coach Jess Simpson said of Silvera. “He’s done a super job of managing that, has really got to a good place where he just focused on today and trying to get a little bit better.”

Because of need at tight end and on the offensive line and, to an extent, at receiver, UM has relied more on freshmen on offense than defense.

The natural freshmen with the most offensive or defensive snaps, in order: Tight end Brevin Jordan 352, receivers Brian Hightower and Dee Wiggins 138 apiece, tight end Will Mallory 118 and offensive tackle DJ Scaife 112.

Here are the other offensive snap counts for freshman, per Gould: receiver Mark Pope 53, running back Lorenzo Lingard 26, offensive tackle John Campbell 21, receiver Marquez Ezzard 19, guard Cleveland Reed 18, running back Cam Davis 16, quarterback Jarren Williams 9 and fullback Realus George 9.

FYI: Though Miami’s five freshmen defensive backs have all played, the top seven in snap counts in UM’s secondary are more experienced players: Michael Jackson (314), Sheldrick Redwine (297), Trajan Bandy (215), Jaquan Johnson (183; missed two games with injury); Jhavonte Dean (129), Amari Carter (128) and Robert Knowles (98

86Cane

Yes, we are widely known for throwing the ball over the middle. Everybody knows that!

Gin & Tonic

Miami’s run blocking needs to improve quickly.

Our running backs are awful.

Until the run game improves, every run play called looks like por play calling.

Defense will have to win the game again.

AeroCane

Less; we have an old time OC with an unsophisticated offense and therefore don’t have the plays to run over the middle effectively. However, the td to Jordan down the sideline was beautiful! Imagine how many more times we could do that, and how much easier it would be if we had some nice medium and deep ‘middle’ passes

AeroCane

Dude - richt was talking about kick offs and punt returns because JT is still a little slowed by the FSU pussy who dragged him down by the face mask

Go Canes!!

Soup: Our TEs never catch the ball over the middle.

Jordan is killing it.

Soup: Yeah but not over the middle dummy!

Well here are his highlights showing most of his catches are actually over the middle.

Soup: Immediately move goalpost and make it about the whole offense.

86Cane

Let's take a poll. Does Miami throw over throw over the middle more or less than other college teams?

Post MORE or LESS

I'm guessing someone asked about them because they want to write a piece about highly touted kids not seeing the field? Or did he just come out and say it. I see a quote wbere Richt says Lingard is earning more time, nothing about Pope.

His Majesty The Dude on High

Is it me or do we just sporadically throw players into the game plan every week???

So now all of a sudden Pope and Lingard will play more this week

Posted by: WWIN | October 11, 2018 at 04:35 PM

It IS kind of weird. We hadnt heard much about either one really getting it together, or stepping up if you will. Last I heard Lingard couldnt block and Pope, well I hadnt read much about him period. I imagine they must be doing better; why else would Richt say they might play more?

Go Canes!!

And Scott Frost is 0-5.

Go Canes!!

Well, almost all of them.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pYLKAA0OcWw

Over the middle you fool! How many?

When he caught his TD last week it was down the left sideline, but of course you never pay attention to details, now do you?

Posted by: UMike | October 11, 2018 at 11:59 AM

Drinking game: Every time an opposing TE catches a pass over the middle, you take a shot.

Now just think of this: If we did it every time a UM TE caught a pass over the middle the drinking game would be an EPIC fail (0)!

Go Canes!!

Manny; When Warren Sapp won the Lombardi Award and the Nagurski Award in 1994, he had 12.5 tackles for loss in 11 games. Gerald Willis @gw3_9 has 12.5 tackles for loss in 6 games.

mi@mic@ne

If they are gonna man up on our receivers with d backs we got to take advantage of their linebackers covering our backs...we need to use our speed backs who can take advantage of the open field and bust a long run.

Told the story on here before. Security for that game was crazy tight, but afterwards the stadium was left completely unguarded.

So after hanging out drinking beers waiting for traffic to die down, we walked right on the field to take pictures and play catch for about half an hour with the lights still on,

Have great pictures standing on the 50 yd line flashing the U on the commemorative logo and at the 58 game winning streak sign.

Posted by: solarcane | October 11, 2018 at 01:26 AM

I agree this is very possible. I also think the Canes can move up during the bye week. But before all that, the Canes need to go to Charlottesville, and take care of business. This is Perry’s first ACC Saturday night road game, and the temperatures will likely be in the 50s or colder. I am interested to see how Perry performs. I would also like to see his receivers catch. 8 drops is unacceptable.

The special teams problems must be solved. The Canes have the worst special teams in the ACC. Too much talent on offense. It’s time for this offense to start turning the corner and execute better. This offensive line must play a lot better.

Go Canes!!

But the stats don't lie. So now agree with me that the offense has been "not good" or even bad as we call it in the real world. I bet you can't!

Richt's play calling has been inexplicably bad at times. The offense has been woefully inconsistent. Our offensive line has mismatched, out of position players because all our best players are freshmen and sophomores.

When have I been unable to stay that again?
