All five starters reached double figures for the University of Miami basketball team Friday night at the Watsco Center, as Jim Larrañaga began his eighth season at the helm with the Hurricanes topping Lehigh, 83-62.
Sophomore guard Chris Lykes capped off the season opener with a career-high 22 points, converting on a career-high eight free-throws and tying a career high with four 3-pointers.
Stuffing the stat sheet senior guard Anthony Lawrence II picked up his third career double-double, notching 19 points and a team-high 12 rebounds, while blocking a trio of shots, dishing out a pair of assists and recording a team-high three steals.
Also chipping in on the offensive end, junior guard Dejan Vasiljevic finished the night with 16 points, sophomore forward Sam Waardenburg scored 11 and senior center Ebuka Izundu capped off the night with 10 points, nine rebounds and three blocks.
Trailing 2-0 in the opening minute, Lawrence knocked down a 3-pointer to give the Canes a lead they would not look back on. Moments later, off of a block by Lawrence, sophomore guard Lykes found himself on the fast break before knocking down Miami's second three of the night.
Overall, the Canes went on a 16-3 run following the opening basket by the Mountain Hawks, to jump in front 16-5, with 16:09 to play in the half.
Leading 25-16, Lykes nearly ripped the roof off the building with a cross-over move that sent his defender to the floor. The Mitchellville, Md., native followed up the ankle-breaking move with a three to place the Canes up 12. Momentum continued to swing in favor of Miami as sophomore forward Sam Waardenburg finished back-to-back end ones to give Miami its largest lead of the half, 34-16.
Following the run, both teams got cold to close out the half, combining to shoot 2-of-26 from the field. Despite the offensive struggles, the Hurricanes continued to wreak havoc on the defensive front closing out the half with a combined six blocks, while also holding the Mountain Hawks to shoot 23.2-percent (7-of-30) from the field, as they took a 12-point, 38-26, lead into the break.
Shooting 1-of-3 from 3-point range in the opening frame, Vasiljevic came out firing on all cylinders in the second half, knocking down back-to-back threes and a pair of free-throws scoring eight of the Canes first 10 points of the period.
Following the offensive explosion, Lehigh began to claw its way back into the contest, cutting the Miami lead to as little as six points, 53-47, with 12:24 to play.
The Canes quickly returned to a double-digit lead after a sequence of events, beginning with a 3-pointer by Lykes with 10:48 to go. Moments later, Lawrence took advantage of a bad pass, which led to a pair of free-throws for Lykes on the opposite end, before Lykes returned the favor by sending Lawrence a beautiful up-court pass, as the senior finished the lay-up to secure his double-double performance.
Miami went on to take its largest lead of the game with 1:26 remaining, when Lawrence drained his fourth three of the night to give the Canes a 24-point advantage, 83-59.
The game is just background noise while I string my new Telecaster and order new stuff for it.

Need to scrap the running plays and pass the ball. Dink and dunk and a few big plays mixed in. No penalties and missed assignments please!

Impressive 95 yard drive when the Canes needed it. If the defense can get a stop, then we are in business

I sure hope they don't blow Cam's redshirt. Already blown Lindegards.

Oh well
Game over!
Diaz defenses are good but very randomly can hold a team when needed

Just needed one more stop to give Perry a chance. Darn! I think he could’ve done it

How do you only score 21 points against GT?......Nevermind!
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | November 10, 2018 at 10:03 PM
At this point fire them all and start over - it won’t affect recruiting as any new coaching staff can fill it with average 3 stars anyways and we will always get a few 4 stars who would come no matter the HC
All these clowns on this site (and you know who you are) talking shit about frost - if we had him we’d all be happy right now
We are NOT going to a bowl!
And I don’t think the bot or BJ gives a shit so why should we
Posted by: AeroCane | November 10, 2018 at 10:04 PM
That was a pathetic play by Michael Jackson to let that guy catch the ball on 3rd down! Although it looked like the receiver pushed off.
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | November 10, 2018 at 10:05 PM
I was lucky to see the Canes when they actually had a better long game than all of Collage football..Erickson .....so lucky

Six false starts, three fumbles, predictable play calling.
Posted by: Go Canes!! | November 10, 2018 at 10:05 PM
Post game rant:
As I stated three weeks ago. Miami will NOT win another game this season. As solar pointed out this is bigger than just a QB and Offensive play calling issue. Much deeper and unless the man in charge steps down we will be going down a spiral for the next few years. We need to cut our loses and start over.
Posted by: Elliott | November 10, 2018 at 10:06 PM
didn't he get tackled out of bounds?

Posted by: His Majesty The Dude on High | November 10, 2018 at 10:07 PM
Big windy - I think you live in some delusional world! Or as my favorite band would say: dream on. This is a really poorly coached team and will not win another game this season

CMR is going to put this L on players and THEIR turnovers - No coaching change for next year!

major underperforming...the coverage is not disciplined...we dont do the little things right even tho you can see out defense is loaded ..the offense is inconsisitent and undisciplined...we run when we should pass and we open it up when it is too late..the excuses are we have next year..bla bla bla

Thank God I won't be around for Thanksgiving to see this shit show! Even if I was I wouldn't be going!
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | November 10, 2018 at 10:10 PM
LLLLL. This is a dam disgrace. GT has about 300yds total offense But Special teams and inept play calling plus penalties. Manny and the Dee need to rebel. Fire all the bastards on the offensive side of the ball plus special teams. I don,'t want to hear no drug Induced bullshyt excuse.

I disagree. The Canes lost this game, but IMO, they took some critical steps forward and should beat Virginia Tech and become Bowl eligible. The Canes just need to eliminate these penalties, dropped passes, missed blocks and turnovers. Fumbles have been fixed when they benched Deejay.
But I think Perry showed some promise moving forward. Davis showed us he can be a trustworthy RB2.

I expect to see a new episode of American Greed From TicketMaster cashier to AD, The great Miami hustle

Why should we expect any difference on the road. What can go wrong will go wrong. We just suck when we go on the road.
Posted by: Herbieibis | November 10, 2018 at 10:26 PM
We knew we were going to have limited offensive opportunities.
The self inflicted wounds, penalties and the three TOs, killed us. Clock and momentum killers.
Only plus in this catastrophe is Kosi played really well.
Everything else that needs to be done is obvious.
Posted by: Go Canes!! | November 10, 2018 at 10:27 PM
If we knew we had limited offense opportunities, we should of been playing hurry up the whole game, especially the last offensive TD drive!
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | November 10, 2018 at 10:34 PM
I am sad.
Posted by: 58 Straight | November 10, 2018 at 10:35 PM
The only positive in this game was Perry and cam!
Special teams still suck, our d can’t stop anyone when we absolutely need it, richt still is an awful OC, we still play the wrong players (ie cager), we still have too many penalties including stupid ones in key spots (Willis offsides when we had them at 3 & 7, early in the game)
We will lose to vt in Blacksburg and pitt at home I’m sorry to say
Posted by: AeroCane | November 10, 2018 at 10:35 PM

What has the Turnover Chain done for us lately?
Where is the excitement?
Where are the turnovers?
Where is the chain?
Where are the top rated recruits who are coming to the U because of the chain?
Don't we look silly flaunting the chain when, in fact, we commit more turnovers than the opposing team - and we lose the game?
The Turnover Chain has clearly lost its mojo.
My recommendation is that next year we replace the Turnover Chain with a new gimmick: WINNING.

Final score: 27 to 21 in favor of GT.
Miami fans demand a recount.
Posted by: nemo2002 | November 10, 2018 at 10:47 PM
Turnover chain should be put away until next year. Until it means something.
Meanwhile....
Time to break the emergency glass. Time to go to Tatooine. Time for the New Hope. Perhaps the Last Hope.
Time for Jarren Williams.

58, Im not angry or sad anymore. I’m just numb. I’ve become acclimated to Miami now sucking and becoming a bottom feeder. Perhaps we should follow Savannah State’s prescient example and drop a division or two. Then we might...just might be more competitive. But even then I fear...some of the Division II and III schools field veteran offensive lines, and are loaded with hungry, fearsome one and two star players.
Posted by: TonyCane | November 10, 2018 at 10:53 PM
We need to stabilize the program. I fully support firing Richt, hiring Butch and naming Manny HCiW. Bring in Kendal Briles. Tell Butch he is taking on Manny as his protege.
Posted by: His Majesty The Dude on High | November 10, 2018 at 11:11 PM
I had 31-19 GT. I was pretty close. Next week VT is going to beat us much worse IMO.
Posted by: His Majesty The Dude on High | November 10, 2018 at 11:12 PM
Look, The Herb says this: it ain't got nothing to do with the T.O. chain. This ain't got a dam thing to do with the Dee, or Manny or stops they should have gotten when put in a bad spot.
Don't go Patty No Kosi don't, throw it either. He ain't no savior just yet.
Two major, major things need to get fixed before we get any mojo moving forward, number ONE, we need to fire Searles and we need some OT's. Well maybe that is already two things.
Richt needs an OC, which interns is also the QB coach.
This team right now is nothing but a boat without oars.

Posted by: Herbieibis | November 10, 2018 at 11:21 PM
I agree with this 110%.
Only thing I’d add is to make Harley full time TE coach and bring someone in to run the special teams.

Bringing in a top OC will require that UM increase CMR's budget (for the football program) AGAIN, which isn't too likely to happen any time soon.
Posted by: nemo2002 | November 10, 2018 at 11:42 PM
Go, don't even get me started on special teams, which is a Total disgrace in it's self. A major University with, not one but 2 middle school punters. Also why do we have a 220 lb. Kid returning punts, in DJ Dallas. We don't have a dam speedster.
