The Miami Hurricanes are set for their annual tussle against Georgia Tech.
Saturday's game presents a unique challenge against a physical triple option offense that the Canes are mentally and physically prepared to face.
"It's two things, really," Miami defensive coordinator Manny Diaz said. "One, tactically being ready for everything they have which is going to be different from what you do week in and week out. And secondly, and probably more importantly, it's your attitude and being ready to match them, and to match their toughness, and to match their physicality. It's a game where you certainly have to have your tactics right, but it is still a blocking and tackling day at the office, and the team that blocks better or the team that defeats blocks better and tackles better versus the team that breaks tackles better usually wins."
The Yellow Jackets lead FBS in rushing offense, averaging 377 yards per game on the ground. They are also among the nation's leaders in time of possession, ranking fifth at 34:28 per game.
"Last ballgame, [Tobias] Oliver, who, at least in that game, was second-team quarterback, rushed for 120 yards and 2 TDs," Miami head coach Mark Richt said. "He had the game-winning score and also threw an 86-yard touchdown pass in the game. They rushed for 461 yards in the game, which is kind of a typical offensive performance for them, rushing for something about 400 yards a game and controlling the clock."
Because of their offensive scheme, opposing defenses need to be physically and mentally prepared for a grueling battle.
"Sometimes it's mental conditioning, to not lose your poise," Diaz said. "Like you said, they can be out there for quite a while. They're going to huddle, they are not going to go fast, it's not going to be hot outside, but sometimes you get mentally worn down, and something you were reading early on, and all of a sudden your eyes, your mind starts to slow down. Your feet may be willing, but your mind is where the fatigue really sets in."
Defensive back Michael Jackson has faced off against Georgia Tech several times in his career and he knows what the Canes need to do on defense if they want to succeed on Saturday.
"Just the mentality that you have to be physical, especially at corner," Jackson said. "Us corners have to be physical and tackle. It's not a cute game. You're going to be dirty. You're going to be sore after the game. You're going to be banging all game and look up and it's only the third quarter and you have to keep banging. It's just a physical mindset."
The phrase "assignment football" is frequently heard when a team is facing Georgia Tech. With their triple option offense, Miami's defenders need to be very disciplined with every snap.
"They do a lot of option," defensive back Trajan Bandy said. "They do a lot of cutting and everything happens so fast. You have to keep your eye on your man because you never know when they might do a trick play, he might spit it out or he might have the ball. You never know, so we just have to have eye discipline on everything."
The battle upfront is especially tough, as Georgia Tech's offensive linemen will continually try to cut bock Miami's defensive line. Gerald Willis III, who leads the ACC in tackles for loss, believes the Canes are ready to face the GT ground attack.
"We're up for the challenge like every other week," Willis said. "We just have to get ready for the cut blocks and these double teams, but we're ready."
First 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻!!!

The big questions for GT. Can the Canes overcome their passing, punting, protection and play-calling to win the game? Can we play up to our talent or down to our coaching?

Georgia Tech 34. Miami. 0
Miami offense fails to advance past GA Tech 40.

Uh, haven't they outlawed the cut block. Seems like I heard the announcers talking about it the last game they played.
Posted by: Herbieibis | November 07, 2018 at 09:57 AM
Josh White: Malik Rosier and N’Kosi Perry are alternating first team reps.
Mark Richt didn’t announce a starting quarterback yesterday, but did say @CanesFootball would use one quarterback against Georgia Tech.
Posted by: Go Canes!! | November 07, 2018 at 10:09 AM
It’s deja vu all over again.
Either Perry is a complete knucklehead or this QB situation belongs in the UM botch job hall of fame along with Wright-Freeman, Berlin-Cruddup fiascos.
At this point I don’t even care if Perry is freaking flying by the seat of his pants out there. CMR starting Rosier at this point is unforgivable.
Posted by: Go Canes!! | November 07, 2018 at 10:15 AM
LOL UMike if we were playing Clemson or Bama I would have us losing 70-14. We suck period point blank. It pains me to say that. Our Awefense is beyond dreadful. 5 * Bleep Show and at some point the defense gets tired of carrying that bleep show.

Someone didn't get the memo I see?
Well let catch you up to date... we don't have Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Jeremy Shockey, Bryant Mckinnie, Willis Mcgahee, Ken Dorsey, and countless other UM greats to beat a juggernaut like Georgia Tech... but give us 10yrs of recruiting and we'll be locked and loaded with 5☆'s that will help us be competitive in the ACC COASTAL!

The Herb don't care who the A B is, until we get the line fixed, especially at tackle, we are going to struggle.
It also doesn't help that the playing call is generic.
It has gotten so bad, now we are trying to lure Clemson's Kelly Bryant to transfer in.
Until Richt figures out that you can't run a pro style offense with spread or read option QB'S then we will continue to struggle passing the football.
If u want to run pro style, then find one.
Cane's stop the bleeding for this week. 27-20.

At this point, the Canes are playing in the short term for a bowl game and in the long term for the promise of the future. To finish the season strong with a string of wins could help save this crumbling recruiting class.
The best case scenario is for the Canes to win on the road at GT and Perry is the QB that leads them to victory. That would show some promise and hope for the future with a QB that other recruits will want to come and play with. I think there will also be some coaching changes, and that could also help recruiting.

That is absolutely the seasonal goal, now:
- Win the last three regular season games
- Win GT with Perry/Rozier
- Win the next two regular season games with Jarren Williams
- Win the bowl game with Jarren
Do that, and you're 9-4, and you have momentum on your side and the promise of a young quarterback with 4 years of eligibility.
That's the goal.

Patience is a virtue vs the 3x option....or as soup said assignment football.
You have to be aware and react but not too fact or over react. We will have to see if we have patience. They will score, but can we hold them or limit them....depends on who shows up to play D.
On offense its a draw. They play average D, we are very average O. We got as good idea who shows up for us....a miserable O the last 3 weeks. Add poor ST and it could be a debacle. I hope not.
We need a win in the worst way just to salvage the season and inject some pride and flush the apathy.
As for Kelly Bryant, he may have played in the playoffs, but he is not the answer. He was there as Clemson is loaded, he did not really get them there. KD11 had the same set up by 10X.
We really need to regroup this week and act like football matters both coaches and players.

I agree with everything you said, but, perhaps it would be wise to keep him on as a figure head while a new OC comes in and phases him out, like Jimbo did Bowden, thus leading to a more respectable showing. Not a championship of course, I have no delusions that Richt is a Championship coach. I just need him to not get in the way of Manny and the OC, this is all assuming that Miami would balk at the idea of firing him right now, given his recent extension and the bad publicity that would come from it.

Remember in 2011 we were saying Penn State would drop football for a decade or so. No high school kid in the nation would ever go there. They were going to suffer 100 times what SMU went through. We were just gonna rebuild the "U Dynasty" and take care of business.
How do programs like Penn State not only over come impossible odds, but field competitive teams while we have top ten recruiting classes that can't make the top 30 teams in the country?
Something about Miami Hurricane football is broken worse than we bitch about on here.

Solar,
Look at Michigan. Harbaugh was on hot seat, expected to be fired.
He gets a good q.b. via transfer and all the sudden he is in top 4 of playoff rankings.
Posted by: Gin & Tonic | November 07, 2018 at 09:37 PM
Solar, PSU was given a reprieve by the NCAA...something that they would have never granted Miami. If the punishment had not been taken away, Penn State would have ended up with a maximum roster of 45 players at the conclusion of the four year sanction. Basically Penn State would have been a doormat for a decade and may never have fully recovered. That was too financially risky for The Big 10, and this the punishment was overturned.

Tony...I think you miss the point. Regardless of what the NCAA did or didn't do to PSU we ALL thought (I know I did) that the toxic situation and the general public perception of what went on there and was covered up at the highest levels would just shut the program down. Instead it almost seems like it never happened.

Posted by: 86Cane | November 08, 2018 at 06:26 PM
Herb you are spot on. Drew or TB12 could start and make no difference with that line; poor stances, slow feet, poor run and pass block...cannot run or pass it.
To make things worse the QB situation is not real good. Malik is not a good QB, ands Perry is young... inaccurate, not focused on football so much and overrated.
I see the offense doing a lot of 3 and out, possible fgs....but unable to move the ball due to poor line and QB play. The get frustrated and turn it over a couple times.
The D holds up through a quarter and a half, give up a TD before half.
Second half same old lame Richt family offense, nothing happens. D on the field a lot, eventually too tired to stick to the plan, and that 3x O gets rolling.
Seeing that its on the road itself is a problem....at least its inside. Hope this is not the case, but its viable!
Wait until Bburg when its cold....SMH

Go,
Jackson told it like u didn't u don't want to hear it.
As I have been stating the O-Line is the main problem. U guys can clamoring for Williams, Perry or whomever but until Richt gets his head out of the dam clouds for madisimal purposes, then the QB's are in for a bad day. The same could be said for the running game. We have about 14 guards on this roster and no tackles. That's Richt's fault, combine that with the chocolate eclair play calling and It I'd a recipe for an L. I don't care if u have Tua back their, his better be getting rid of the football. Richt has been found out. Everybody in the conference, who has any talent have the blue print. Defensive coordinators have the blue print. I hate for the defense because save for 2 halves they have played their ass off. U compare how we have recruited compared to everyone except FSU and Clemson, we should be miles ahead of a bunch of stiffs like Puke, DA U Whoos and ,BCPowder.

Nope.........this team is in a spiral and there is no sense of urgency from the coaches to the players. N'Kosi will know in the back of his mind he is on a short leash which will make him press and play poorly. He will get yanked and CMR will take a few hits from the bong at halftime. By the time its over and he starts to realize there are no empanadas in the local area, he will have a Mike Gundy moment during the post game presser....

What's good Legion/Canespace? What has happened to the blob? I don't post nor watch Canes football for a month and total chaos has taken over? U of Coral Gables 13 - Wrambling Wreck U 12.

He didn’t tell me anything I didn’t already know. It has nothing to do with wanting or not wanting to hear anything.
I pointed out there are inaccuracies about how many schools were after some of the guys he listed.
