The Miami Hurricanes are set for their annual tussle against Georgia Tech.
Saturday's game presents a unique challenge against a physical triple option offense that the Canes are mentally and physically prepared to face.
"It's two things, really," Miami defensive coordinator Manny Diaz said. "One, tactically being ready for everything they have which is going to be different from what you do week in and week out. And secondly, and probably more importantly, it's your attitude and being ready to match them, and to match their toughness, and to match their physicality. It's a game where you certainly have to have your tactics right, but it is still a blocking and tackling day at the office, and the team that blocks better or the team that defeats blocks better and tackles better versus the team that breaks tackles better usually wins."
The Yellow Jackets lead FBS in rushing offense, averaging 377 yards per game on the ground. They are also among the nation's leaders in time of possession, ranking fifth at 34:28 per game.
"Last ballgame, [Tobias] Oliver, who, at least in that game, was second-team quarterback, rushed for 120 yards and 2 TDs," Miami head coach Mark Richt said. "He had the game-winning score and also threw an 86-yard touchdown pass in the game. They rushed for 461 yards in the game, which is kind of a typical offensive performance for them, rushing for something about 400 yards a game and controlling the clock."
Because of their offensive scheme, opposing defenses need to be physically and mentally prepared for a grueling battle.
"Sometimes it's mental conditioning, to not lose your poise," Diaz said. "Like you said, they can be out there for quite a while. They're going to huddle, they are not going to go fast, it's not going to be hot outside, but sometimes you get mentally worn down, and something you were reading early on, and all of a sudden your eyes, your mind starts to slow down. Your feet may be willing, but your mind is where the fatigue really sets in."
Defensive back Michael Jackson has faced off against Georgia Tech several times in his career and he knows what the Canes need to do on defense if they want to succeed on Saturday.
"Just the mentality that you have to be physical, especially at corner," Jackson said. "Us corners have to be physical and tackle. It's not a cute game. You're going to be dirty. You're going to be sore after the game. You're going to be banging all game and look up and it's only the third quarter and you have to keep banging. It's just a physical mindset."
The phrase "assignment football" is frequently heard when a team is facing Georgia Tech. With their triple option offense, Miami's defenders need to be very disciplined with every snap.
"They do a lot of option," defensive back Trajan Bandy said. "They do a lot of cutting and everything happens so fast. You have to keep your eye on your man because you never know when they might do a trick play, he might spit it out or he might have the ball. You never know, so we just have to have eye discipline on everything."
The battle upfront is especially tough, as Georgia Tech's offensive linemen will continually try to cut bock Miami's defensive line. Gerald Willis III, who leads the ACC in tackles for loss, believes the Canes are ready to face the GT ground attack.
"We're up for the challenge like every other week," Willis said. "We just have to get ready for the cut blocks and these double teams, but we're ready."

Dude,
It doesn't matter if Richt makes changes. He's not a championship coach. In his 18th season he hasn't even sniffed a title. Now all of a sudden he's going to just figure out in year 19, 20 or 21???
Hell to the f*ck naw. Lol
Once canes fans except this reality, it won't hurt so much. They'll be able to laugh at this joke of a coach.
Fly banners, don't attend games, don't buy merchandise etc.
When the $ ain't coming in, moves will get made soon enough.
Patience and perspective. We ain't got sh*t else...

I agree with everything you said, but, perhaps it would be wise to keep him on as a figure head while a new OC comes in and phases him out, like Jimbo did Bowden, thus leading to a more respectable showing. Not a championship of course, I have no delusions that Richt is a Championship coach. I just need him to not get in the way of Manny and the OC, this is all assuming that Miami would balk at the idea of firing him right now, given his recent extension and the bad publicity that would come from it.

I agree 100% with everything you said... but in Jarren's case I don't think they developed him but I think he's already been developed before he came to UM... at least more than the others we have.

Remember in 2011 we were saying Penn State would drop football for a decade or so. No high school kid in the nation would ever go there. They were going to suffer 100 times what SMU went through. We were just gonna rebuild the "U Dynasty" and take care of business.
How do programs like Penn State not only over come impossible odds, but field competitive teams while we have top ten recruiting classes that can't make the top 30 teams in the country?
Something about Miami Hurricane football is broken worse than we bitch about on here.

Diaz nominated for top assistant college coach third year in a row.
We will be looking for a head coach OC and defensive Coordinator in a minute
Posted by: solarcane | November 07, 2018 at 09:09 PM
Solar,
Look at Michigan. Harbaugh was on hot seat, expected to be fired.
He gets a good q.b. via transfer and all the sudden he is in top 4 of playoff rankings.
Posted by: Gin & Tonic | November 07, 2018 at 09:37 PM
Solar, PSU was given a reprieve by the NCAA...something that they would have never granted Miami. If the punishment had not been taken away, Penn State would have ended up with a maximum roster of 45 players at the conclusion of the four year sanction. Basically Penn State would have been a doormat for a decade and may never have fully recovered. That was too financially risky for The Big 10, and this the punishment was overturned.

How profound.
We can't throw.
We can't catch.
We can't block.
And we sure as hell can't even punt.
WTF is going on here?
Posted by: 86Cane | November 07, 2018 at 10:17 PM
Tony...I think you miss the point. Regardless of what the NCAA did or didn't do to PSU we ALL thought (I know I did) that the toxic situation and the general public perception of what went on there and was covered up at the highest levels would just shut the program down. Instead it almost seems like it never happened.
Posted by: 86Cane | November 07, 2018 at 10:20 PM
Tony...can you do a comparison of the recruiting class rankings of UM, BC, UVA and GT for the last 3-5 years or so?

You’re absolutely right 86. They SHOULD have been hurt badly, even with the partial sanctions. But in the end, they bounced back more quickly than USC, which still isn’t back

Like The Herb said, it don't matter who the QB is as long as the O-Line don't handle teir business. He does have a better arm but his accuracy is to, called Into a question and also will Richt finally use page 2 of his playbook.

SCORE PREDICTION CHANGE:
Miami 34 - GT 13
Posted by: 86Cane | November 08, 2018 at 06:26 PM
Herb you are spot on. Drew or TB12 could start and make no difference with that line; poor stances, slow feet, poor run and pass block...cannot run or pass it.
To make things worse the QB situation is not real good. Malik is not a good QB, ands Perry is young... inaccurate, not focused on football so much and overrated.
I see the offense doing a lot of 3 and out, possible fgs....but unable to move the ball due to poor line and QB play. The get frustrated and turn it over a couple times.
The D holds up through a quarter and a half, give up a TD before half.
Second half same old lame Richt family offense, nothing happens. D on the field a lot, eventually too tired to stick to the plan, and that 3x O gets rolling.
Seeing that its on the road itself is a problem....at least its inside. Hope this is not the case, but its viable!
Wait until Bburg when its cold....SMH

“If it’s yellow, let it mellow. If it’s brown, flush it down.”

Mark Richt has never lost a game at Bobby Dodd and he has only lost twice in 11 tries against Paul Johnsons triple option.

Posted by: TonyCane | November 08, 2018 at 07:28 PM
Go,
Jackson told it like u didn't u don't want to hear it.
As I have been stating the O-Line is the main problem. U guys can clamoring for Williams, Perry or whomever but until Richt gets his head out of the dam clouds for madisimal purposes, then the QB's are in for a bad day. The same could be said for the running game. We have about 14 guards on this roster and no tackles. That's Richt's fault, combine that with the chocolate eclair play calling and It I'd a recipe for an L. I don't care if u have Tua back their, his better be getting rid of the football. Richt has been found out. Everybody in the conference, who has any talent have the blue print. Defensive coordinators have the blue print. I hate for the defense because save for 2 halves they have played their ass off. U compare how we have recruited compared to everyone except FSU and Clemson, we should be miles ahead of a bunch of stiffs like Puke, DA U Whoos and ,BCPowder.

Posted by: NativeCane | November 08, 2018 at 06:59 PM
*************************************************
Nope.........this team is in a spiral and there is no sense of urgency from the coaches to the players. N'Kosi will know in the back of his mind he is on a short leash which will make him press and play poorly. He will get yanked and CMR will take a few hits from the bong at halftime. By the time its over and he starts to realize there are no empanadas in the local area, he will have a Mike Gundy moment during the post game presser....
