Earlier today, in what can only be described as a stunning turn of events, Mark Richt suddenly resigned as head football coach at the University of Miami.
Following a disappointing 7-6 season that culminated in an ugly, lopsided loss to Wisconsin in the Pinstripe Bowl, Richt had apparently had enough.
It also seems that he may have realized that rather than completely rebuild a new coaching staff at UM that it would be better to pass the torch on to a new head coach at his beloved alma mater.
Richt left with the same class and grace that he brought to the job at Miami. For that we owe him our respect and appreciation.
At the same time, many fans had been clamoring for his resignation or firing after realizing that all of the positive momentum gained in 2017 was all but lost in 2018 with the results on the field and in the recruiting game.
The game appeared to have passed Richt by as his antiquated and ineffective offensive scheme grew old and tired among the fans.
Singer and songwriter Bruce Springstein wrote in his song "Glory Days" these words: "Glory Days, They'll pass U by, Glory Days, In the wink of a young girls eye...Glory Days, Glory Days." Those words seem to ring true for Mark Richt and his tenure as head coach at Miami. Richt was simply not able to recapture the glory days or return "The U" to the prominence that was once so expected and enjoyed that it was often taken for granted by Miami fans.
Richt's time at the University of Miami was short and bitter sweet. He restored pride in Miami and helped bring the Indoor Practice Facility. As a former Hurricane player, he held a special place in the hearts and minds of many UM fans. But, like former head coach Randy Shannon, that was not enough for the fans to overlook the obvious shortcomings on the field or the results in the win/loss column.
In the end, he made the best decision for himself, his team and his school.
Now, the National search for a new head coach at UM begins again just three years after Richt's hiring. Many names will be bantered about by the fans, the media and those on the inside of the decision making process at Miami.
With the NFL season ending for many teams after today we anticipate many coaching changes which will result in head coaches and offensive and defensive coordinators becoming available. In addition, the college football season will winding down over the next week or so also resulting in changes that will free up several talented coaches.
As a result, we do not expect a decision anytime soon. These exhaustive searches, numerous interviews and big decisions take time.
As fans, all we can do is just hope it is the right decision this time around.
Holy Empanadas!

Mark Richt is a class act. Way to put the needs of the U ahead of your own. He could have milked it for AT LEAST one more year. Blake James, this next hire will make or break your legacy at the U...don't f@#$ it up!!

Great article Soup. Richt did what was right for all. but, what happens to all the millions??? How much does he love the school to forego some of that money?
We need the top heads, who played and coached for the U, to help us get the best. NOW is the time for Dorsey, Lewis, Sapp, etc. to meet and talk this out.
PLEASE TAKE TIME.
I tried to get WQAM on the computer, but couldn't.

I don't know, but in three years he turned Syracuse from...well, Syracuse to a team that almost beat us in Year 2 and the only team thus far to give Clemson a scare in Year 3.

If he can recruit south Florida and hire good assistants I’m good!
Posted by: AeroCane | December 30, 2018 at 03:12 PM
All of the new HCs sound good... Cristobal, Butch, Venables...
That's not the point though. The point is the staff hires. We need to hire well qualified coaches with resumes. The HC that hires a qualified spread OC, and a DC the likes of Greg Schiano is going to win and croot at Miami. We need a true CEO, not someone looking to hand out jobs to BFFs and relatives.

We don't have any clout, but let's hope the BOT take their time, consult JJ, Butch, etc. for their input. Simple request. Hope they do, but I doubt it.
Time for all the greats to give their input.

Hate to sound ignorant, but who is Rex Ryan?
Posted by: MLAlumni1970 | December 30, 2018 at 03:25 PM
coached the jets ...an old school coach.
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | December 30, 2018 at 03:26 PM
Rex Ryan isn't happening. No point in really speculating until BJ speaks in about 5 minutes.
Posted by: Dude on a Pale Horse | December 30, 2018 at 03:26 PM
I'm a Butch fan and would love to have him but I prefer Mario. This offensive line is in need of extreme tutelage. Imo, Mario is the guy. Keep Jess Simpson and I'll be ready to rock out. Championships are won at the line of scrimmage.
Mario has a $10 million dollar buyout before 1-31-2019 and it only reduces by $2 million afterwards, if what I've read is correct.

Who In the effing world would mention a retread Rex Ryan.
Get it: We don't need no pro style coach. We can't and have not been able to get the good linemen to run it.
Bama can and even they run spread but with their horses up front they could run any style.
We need a splash hire and especially one that can recruit and get So. Flo. Kids excited to come here.
Solar, straight up!

CMR did some good things as coach, but this decision to retire is best for everyone involved.
As for potential replacements, I like TBC’s suggestion, Mike Leach, who would immediately help the Canes close with a good recruiting class. Available 2019 QB recruits will want to play for Leach. I think Leach would have the freedom to decide whether he should keep Patke and Banda as Co-DCs, let them remain in some other capacity and/or find an experienced DC

If you wish hard enough, your dreams can come true. CMR did the right thing as he is no longer interested in coaching football.
Now we have to get rid of Blake James and the entire BOT. I just sent this email to BJ:
Dear Sir;
While it is clear Coach Mark Richt understands he cannot lead this football program, it is now pertinent that you see that you cannot lead this athletic department.
Sir, you have no understanding how historic and important this storied program is and you have been the leading component in allowing it to sink to a new low. We all know you and many members of the Board of Trustees do not care about football or have ever played the game. So many of you do not understand what it takes or means to be a champion. I am sick and tired of hearing this school called the Harvard of the South. This is not about education; Harvard may be a fine school, but they have never won anything important on an athletic field. This school will continue to provide great educational experiences; this is about football.
Take a look at the two finalists in this years college football championship. The last time I checked, The University of Alabama and Clemson University were located in the South. They are also fine schools, and they win on a fairly regular basis. Mr. Saban has won 5 National Championships and 88% of his games at Alabama. Under your leadership, we have gone in the opposite direction; the football program is a dumpster fire and a national social joke.
I implore you to resign immediately. Surely you have enough ego and money to last your lifetime and provide your family that smug, upper crust lifestyle you greedily enjoy. Please encourage the entire Board of Trustees to resign as well, as they, like yourself, have no desire to see the program return to our lofty perch in college football. None of you have made the effort it takes to accomplish this, and each of you need to get out of the way and stop impeding the success of Hurricane football.
They all need to go now....F**k education; people get one her...I paid for my nieces!!!!
This is about football!!!!
