There are usually two (or more) ways to look at any situation. In the classic example of this equation it is often said that you either see the glass as half full or half empty. Some people argue that the glass is just the wrong size but that is clearly a discussion for another day.
In evaluating the most recent defensive coaching changes at the University of Miami football program some fans saw it as a positive outcome while others countered that the changes were a negative decision. While nobody knows for sure what the results will be, we thought we would briefly examine both sides of the argument and let you decide for yourselves.
Positive: The promotion of the defensive assistants ensures "continuity on defense" (the best part of the 2018 team), prevents some assistants from leaving along with DC Diaz to Temple, and also maintains existing recruiting relationships already established to hopefully keep the 2019 and 2020 defensive recruiting classes intact for the most part. The theory is that these coaches can run the same defense that was successful in 2018 (as Diaz would have) with the same calls, signals and success as their predecessor. They believe Richt has proven that he is the right man for the job and will succeed given adequate time to get the job done right. They believe Richt is on the right track.
Negative: The proposed "National search" for an experienced Defensive Coordinator that would lead the UM defense never even got started. It was a sham and the head coach was desperate to hold the staff together of the strength of his team and sold out to keep them and their recruits in tow. He promoted severely inexperienced coaches (no debate here) to positions they have not earned and never deserved because if he lost the defense and their recruits then his pitiful offense that he is coordinating and his very un-special teams would be even more severely exposed than what has been done already. These fans believe that Richt is old and tired, has proven thus far to be the wrong man for the job and may wind up a failure if he can't fix it quick.
So please tell us Miami Hurricane fans, where do you fall on this positive-negative spectrum. And don't be shy of The Shark or D'NO!
On a scale of 1-10, what score would you give Head Coach Mark Richt for:
- His overall performance to date?
- His recent coaching decisions on defense?
What

1. Richt Gets a 8.25(Win Bowl Game it goes to 8.5 lose it and it goes to 8.0
2. Richt Gets a 7.75
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | December 16, 2018 at 11:33 PM
He kept the coaches to keep what hope he had, alive to salvage this class. I hope so because Bogel and Hasselwood aren't announcing till Jan. 5 at earliest. Richt gets a 5 and that is generous. If we don't get those croots hanging in the balance then he should get the can.
Posted by: Herbieibis | December 16, 2018 at 11:43 PM
Herb if Richt gets a 5 and that's being generous what did Golden, Shannon, and last 3 years of Coker (2004-2006) grade they get.

2. Recent decision: 3 Richt, Golden -1 for keeping DNo

OK this pains me to admit it
and I will take The Herb and CoCane kicking me in the nuts but..
on Richts good list I think he
Helped get the indoor facility a little sooner.
He brought back the coolest uniforms I have seen on the Canes in over a decade.
On his naughty list
He is a a warm pile at calling plays
He hired his son, who is a steaming pile at developing the guy that runs our three offensive plays.

My hopes are not high with Hasslewood or Bogle. I’m guessing that they end up Georgia commits
Posted by: TonyCane | December 17, 2018 at 12:52 AM
According to rivals there are NINE 4* CBs in SoFL, Miami has only 1 CB commit and he's the smallest of the bunch. All this with the #2 2ndary in America and another year of putting a starter into the NFL. All Rumph does is train excellent CBs, he does it every year... why cant this man recruit a f*cking lick? I accepted lasts year's haul, the big dogs arent coming yet, fine, let Rumph build his resume... well now his resume is pretty good, but isnt getting it done with recruiting. I get it if Dent & Elam werent coming... But Brownlee gone, Davis gone, Sanguinetti & Melvin gone too.
We arent going to out Bama or Clemson. But we can be a much better Miami. We already have the defense for it, now we just need to recruit that thing.
Two 4* DTs every year, not easy to find, but we need to sell the fast types like Ingraham that The U is where its at, its how to get money. Maybe we get an extra if theres a 3* we like, like Blissett that ended up a 4. DEs: 2 playable every year, maybe one to redshirt if we really like him (Garvin & Rouesseu). This year havi g Bogle, Williams, & Harvey locked in was more than enough. thats fire powern but alas, Boglea on his way to Bama unless we get lucky. 2 playable LBs every year. We always have 3* players here that can play (Perryman) is a fine example and I would take those guys redshirt em and bring them back like 5* the next season. Safety. Miami's always loaded. Mind you that Jaquan was a 3*. LoL. That kid had a perfect career, now hes gonna get paid, hes an elite CF SS. Lastly CBs, the two most elite ones every year will shut it down. Just imagine the depth with the 2 every year rule with CBs.
1. **** SR CB #1 Trayvon Mullen 6'1" 195
2. *** RSJR CB #12 Malek Young 5'10" 189
3. **** JR CB #2 Trajan Bandy 5'9" 188
4. **** JR CB #5 CJ Henderson 6'0" 185
5. ***** SO CB #3 Tyson Campbell 6'2" 185
6. ***** SO CB #23 Pat Surtain 6'2" 195
7. ***** FR CB #11 Akeem Dent 6'1" 180
8. **** RSFR CB #8 DJ Ivey 6'1" 190
Championship level right there.

If Bogel don't come here it will be Bama.
Posted by: Herbieibis | December 17, 2018 at 01:24 AM
F minus overall. Peeiod. Golden saw this thing through the whole sanctions and all of those distractions. He did a much better job. This guy is incompetent and if incompetence was a crime, he should be serving a life sentence it's absolutely pathetic. No real defensive coach would join his staff as they know it's a sinking ship and the incompetence of the athletic director which is unparalleled is crippling

What about pastor keeping his son???
Pastor has more resources than Golden, no cloud, and is doing less with more... how is he better than Golden other than him having a better reputation?

The cloud is still here... that's why we hired the reverend!
Posted by: WWIN | December 17, 2018 at 10:51 AM
Dude,
It's same old problem with us in recruiting, we pick out certain guys and go after them hard, get a few verbals and we think we're done. Some like Sanguanetti, Davis and Melvin we didn't go hard after. Elam, they probably thought was going to Flo. being a legacy and they just recently started going after him hard. They put all there egs in a basket for the QB that went to Penn. St. Johnson.
Combine these tatics with a putrid showing offensively and losing to nobodies and the natives become restless. They read the stuff that's posted, they saw the results on the field. Kids want to win and play. We, for the most part will get the true Cane's kids that eat drink and sleep all things Miami, no matter what goes on but we also are losing kids that want to go here but won't because of the product on the field.
We have a couple of good recruiters but not closers.
We need to bring in at least one 4 star guy at each position each year. If we are bringing in 25 croots at least 14 to 16 should be of the 4 star variety. I think Richt has been here the most he has brought in is maybe 20. I'm not counting grad players. He also has left certain positions go and not recruited it hard, like the CB position to begin with. Same goes with the OT position. He needs to hit every position hard and he hadn't. All our LB's are 3 star players. Aside from Silverado at DT, he now is our only 4 star. Blissett will give us to but he just recently got his 4th star.
We just don't have enough depth of talent. I thought we were on our way until this fiasco of a season happened. We are stuck around 30 in the rankings, 5th in the ACC, that's pitiful. We can move up by pulling in Bogel, Summerall, Zepperer, Hasselwood and Elam but those are leaning elsewhere at the moment. Of course anything can change but this may not end up real good for us Wed. Then he will really have to scramble to find players who don't sign. That could really be ugly.
Posted by: Herbieibis | December 17, 2018 at 10:52 AM
Herb U are correct it's not looking promising on the recruiting front.

Yes he is out for Bowl Game my Guess he is out for Senior Bowl as well. Was Playing with Bad Hand last half of season and was advised to let it heal and get ready for Combine.

Justin Fields may be transferring. Hum! Can't see this dude sitting 2 more years behind their current QB who is a soph.
Posted by: Herbieibis | December 17, 2018 at 11:59 AM
Herb. Fromm is leaving after next year dude aint staying for his Senior Year he will enter next years draft. U should know that lol. But not surprised by Fields possibly transferring.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | December 17, 2018 at 12:19 PM
Terrence I question if he goes next year. I agree he’s accurate and makes good decisions but he’s never been asked to carry this offense, he’s been more of a complimentary guy in a run first offense. Imo he’s more Aaron Murray than Matthew Stafford.
Either way, Fields would be taking a gigantic risk by staying.

Posted by: CGNC | December 17, 2018 at 01:44 PM
Posted by: Herbieibis | December 17, 2018 at 10:52 AM
Absolutely. At most positions you want two 4*s every year, or have a redshirted 3* guy with high potential to pair with him. Blissett & DT is a good example of what I'm talking about. This year, we should have gotten a 4* like Sorrells and the two 3*s Ingraham and Blissett, when they got their 4th * we would have been looking really good with three 4* DTs, 2 to play and 1 to redshirt for next year, meaning next year we just take the top guy we can get, and maybe a guy we can redshirt, someone along the lines of a Jon Ford. Thats how you build some God D@mned depth. It should be this way at every position. Bottom line is, the MR era is over, we are just waiting for the clock to hit zero. When MR is fired, I hope the BoT will hire a GM to make the supporting staff hires, HCs have shown they are too stubborn here and act like Gods because BJ has no idea what hes doing. All hires should go through the GM and every candidate should have a minimum resume.

When we finally put Pastor out to pasture we'll announce that we're opening up a "national" search... two days later Manny Diaz will be hired from TEMPLE!!! Sound familiar?
Posted by: WWIN | December 17, 2018 at 02:04 PM
Not so fast with the ending of the Mark Richt era. We still have the bowl game and if we come out and lay an egg, then I might say the end is near but only if the offense looks it's usual self. All these Xtra practices are supposed to make a difference, well let's see.

This all started with (hiring his son) not hiring Mark Helfrich. Had we rolled with him at OC this season, we easily could have won more games, had positive momentum, & replaced Diaz with Banda, then promoted Patke to LBs.
