Tell me again why UNC went back to Mack Brown and didn't call Jesus Christ's half brother Butch Davis?
Posted by: solarcane | December 04, 2018 at 05:23 PM
Why would they hire someone they scapegoated and why would Butch wanna go back after that?
Posted by: WWIN | December 05, 2018 at 10:36 PM
Connections. Prior history.
Mack is a great fundraiser and representative for the program. He will get along WELL with boosters and alumni.
Posted by: TonyCane | December 05, 2018 at 10:44 PM
I will say this also: Had Butch been hired back here instead of Pastor Richt, he would not have hired his @%~!&% son as QB coach.

If the Canes are losing Florida recruiting battles to OSU with an inexperienced head coach, the future for Canes recruiting isn’t very bright.

Here's a couple of other details on Mack Brown's tenure at Texas:
1) From 1999 - 2009 Texas did not play one credible out of conference game. In eleven seasons they had one 1 and 1 series with a team that could legitimately beat them (Ohio State). Their toughest game came against a mediocre Arkansas squad. The Longhorns feasted - FEASTED - on cream puffs. North Texas. Texas State. Sam Houston State. Rice. New Mexico.
2) Outside of Oklahoma, the rest of the Big 12 was mediocre to very weak until 2010. That talent disparity began to close afterwards
Take these two factors into account, even with average QB play the Longhorns were almost guaranteed to start the year 4-0.
3) The one team that matched up to them that they played every year was Oklahoma, and this game was of course on a neutral site. Mack had a disastrous record against Bob Stoops:
1999: (W) 38-28
2000: (L) 14-63
2001: (L) 03-14
2002: (L) 24-35
2003: (L) 13-65
2004: (L) 00-12
These were all teams that had talent on par with OU, and could be argued that they were better at points than the Sooners. Adrian Peterson specifically cited the 2003 game as the reason he flipped his commitment from the Longhorns to the Sooners.
Bottom line, the conditions that led to Mack's success don't exist now in the ACC.
1) Mack will have a much tougher time recruiting at UNC than he did at Texas
2) The competitions is far, far greater even in a weakened, parity strewn Coastal division than in the Big 12. And he'll have to contend with teams like Clemson, Syracuse, and Florida State.
3) UNC won't be able to get away with scheduling just Rice, Texas-El Paso, Sam Houston State, and North Texas as its out of conference games.

Posted by: sugarcane | December 05, 2018 at 11:37 PM
Agree with most of all that Tony, 80% prob. But no one was arguing that Mack will enjoy great success this time around at UNC or that he was an overly amazing HC at TX. Only saying that it is ridiculous and tiresome to continue to hear about all the success that Butch “would have had or will have if only given a chance” and that he’s a demonstrable better HC than Mack. Both guys are old now and have been around for 30+ years. The records show what they are. One guy has a NC and almost another regardless of why and how, the other guy doesn’t have anything close.
I thought Butch was a fantastic pro DC, a superior evaluator of college talent, a great recruiter, and did a perfect job leading us through the probation years of the ‘90’s. He deserves credit and eternal CANE fandom adoration for putting together the 99-03 teams. And I’d welcome him back right now if this was even a slight possibility. But his legend has grown so great among many fans that a) it’s insane - he wasn’t a proven big time winner when he left, to assume he’d be one now is simply that, an assumption; and b) there’s no way in hell he could meet fans expectations if he did return now.
If Richt isn’t the man and yeah it’s looking bleak at the moment, I prefer we bring in an up & comer rather than retread old ground.
Posted by: DallasTX Cane | December 05, 2018 at 11:42 PM
So wait, Mack lucked into Young and McCoy? Do tell... he didnt recruit them or something? They were walk ons? This is nonsense TC. He got them to come to Texas and developed them into great CF players. Young is on the all time 3 deep at QB. Remember when Texas had that tradition where all JRs stayed?

Well said and I agree. However, I dont think Miami's admin understands football, I think they should have a Football AD, and that Butch could do that job well.

Posted by: sugarcane | December 05, 2018 at 11:37 PM
Well played Sir!
Posted by: SOUP | December 06, 2018 at 12:01 AM
WWIN, he doesn’t suck. He’s similar to Butch in many respects. But there was a specific set of circumstances and advantages that allowed him to build a good team that averaged around 9 wins a year between 1999 and 2004, and then he hit on back to back quarterbacks. Once those QBs left and competition began to get stiffer, UT fell back to earth.
To what Dallas said, I agree. My own speculation is that Butch would have had roughly the same career as Texas that Mack did had he gone there in 1998. They are very similar in many respects.
Posted by: TonyCane | December 06, 2018 at 12:02 AM
His Majesty...good fallout. Recruiting is a vital part of being a coach and he got Vince Young to commit to Texas...a move that saved his career. I remember a very impatient fanbase in 2004 and Vince getting them to the next level saved them. And of course, he recruits Colt as well.
When I saw he lucked into Colt, my point is that McCoy was signed for depth. He was never intended to be the starter. He was lucky in that there was a heck of a lot more to Colt than met the eye, and he was astute in allowing McCoy to take the starting job from the highly ranked, highly recruited Snead. But to be clear - Vince Young was always viewed as a potential superstar when he came into the program. Colt has no such buzz.
That said, Mack also failed to recruit Andrew Luck, RGIII and Johnny Manziel. Manziel desperately wanted to go to Texas.

Badger First Team All Big Ten
Five University of Wisconsin football players earned Associated Press All-Big Ten first-team honors when the teams were released Wednesday, including the only unanimous selection in the conference.
Badgers running back Jonathan Taylor was a first-team pick by all 27 voters after he also earned consensus first-team honors by the league's coaches and media last week. He also won the Ameche-Dayne Big Ten Running Back of the Year Award.
Left guard Michael Deiter, center Tyler Biadasz, right guard Beau Benzschawel and inside linebacker T.J. Edwards were the other first-team selections, while right tackle David Edwards earned a spot on the second team.
UW's five first-team selections trailed only Michigan's seven. Five members of the Wolverine's defense, which ranks first nationally in total defense, earned a first-team nod.
Taylor's 1,989 rushing yards led the nation this season, and his 165.8 rushing yards per game were nearly 20 more than any other player in the country.
The sophomore's big season came on the back of a 1,977-yard year as a true freshman in 2017, when he finished sixth in Heisman Trophy voting.
He became just the fourth player in FBS history to record back-to-back 1,900-yard rushing seasons, joining Iowa State's Troy Davis, TCU's LaDanian Tomlinson and Memphis' DeAngelo Williams.
Taylor also broke an FBS record held by former UW running back Ron Dayne, amassing more rushing yards than any player through his sophomore season. Dayne accumulated 3,566 in his first two years with the Badgers.
T.J. Edwards, a four-year starter, played some of the best football of his career over the second half of this season. He's recorded double-digit tackle totals in five of his last seven games, including a career-high 18 against Minnesota in UW's regular-season finale.
Now at 104 tackles on the season, Edwards became the first Badgers linebacker since Chris Borland in 2013 to record more than 100 tackles.
Deiter's 53 starts are a program record, and Benzschawel's not far behind with 48 straight. Deiter moved back to a more natural position at left guard this season after earning All-American honors at left tackle in 2017.
Biadasz, a redshirt sophomore, enjoyed a breakout season at center and made an argument as UW's best lineman this year.
David Edwards earned his second-team honor despite playing the entire year with a left shoulder injury

Sounds like this year's pinstripe bowl could be strength v. strength, with Wisconsin having three interior lineman as first team All ACC, v. Willis and Shaq in the middle, and the Canes DL, which my LOF Jess Simpson turned into the strength of the defense. I am definitely interested in seeing that matchup. Jaquan will have to be the "eraser" during that game, as he cannot miss tackles.
If Wisconsin cannot run the ball, it will be a long day for them.

I agree Solar! This is NOT the Whisky team from last year. I think our D is BETTER and we should be able to make them one dimensional. If CMR continues with the spread like O the past couple games, we (could) put a whooping on the Badgers.

I loved the teams BD built...BD went 11-1 in 2000...and had we had the shot we win NC no doubt in my mind. He leaves in 2000....from his last year in 2000 to 2003 UM is 46-4 1 NC in 01...should have been 3 straight 2000-02....another story.
He recruited the greatest college team of all time.
BD was not a great time manager, time out manager, or game day guy....little sketchy and disorganized...maybe he knew CMR and burned with him!
He left here bad terms...lied to the kids....but hell he was a great recruiter.
When they looked for a coach, BD was never really in the mix...BOT, AD did not want a throwback to JJ DE days...BD was that...they wanted the success but no swag no drama no Canes Thang....you all know it!
CMR is a nice man....but ships taking on water.....again...and while some may 5think the GA story is grand...it is good.....it is not UM. Frankly 15 years is 15 years....and there has been a lot of hope and change....but in reality it has been despair and stagnation.
CGNCPa raising all kinds of hell...duck!!!!

That's NOT what you told me at the game? You were trashing him and cursing his name and putting pins in the voodoo doll that you said you made for him while visiting the bayou in Louisiana? Then you spit on the ground and brought out the gris-gris and a the gonga root and rubbed it in with a snarl on your face.
Or was that just a drunken dream I had?
