The Miami Hurricanes are headed to New York City for a rematch against last year's bowl opponent, the Wisconsin Badgers.
"I'm looking forward to it," senior Jaquan Johnson said. "I've never been to New York before so it's going to be quite the experience. My family is going to go up there. I'm looking forward to the rematch with Wisconsin. I know those guys are fired up again to be playing against us, looking forward to opportunity."
The two teams will meet in the New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. For many Canes, it will be their first trip to The Big Apple, but every Cane is looking forward to the opportunity to play in one of the most famous venues in sports.
"It's the second time for me going to New York," senior defensive back Sheldrick Redwine said. "I went to New York a couple years ago when I was younger, but that'll be a great experience playing in Yankee Stadium. That'll be a great experience."
As part of that experience, the Canes and Badgers will be playing in some chilly temperatures. But Miami's players are confident they are ready to face Wisconsin in any weather.
"Playing in the cold is not so much of a factor like people think it is," senior Tyree St. Louis said. "Once you get started, once you get moving around and active on the field, you'll forget you're even cold because you're still playing the game."
With temperatures expected in the thirties, Miami's players are mentally prepared to play the Badgers in cold weather. In fact, the game day forecast has some Canes are dreaming of a white Christmas.
"I like it. I hope it snows," sophomore wide receiver Mike Harley said. "But at the same time it's a mental thing. We're mentally tough now. We played four away games in the cold so we're used to it. It's no big deal."
No matter what the weather is, the Canes are motivated to avenge their 34-24 loss in last year's Capitol One Orange Bowl and UM's veterans are pushing their teammates to make sure Miami comes out with a victory this time.
"It's mainly just that team beat us last year in our home in a big time bowl game in a great season that we had," St. Louis said. "That was just kind of upsetting. We didn't do what we needed to do last year and we're not going to let that happen again."
The senior leaders on the 2018 Hurricanes roster have already begun setting the tone for this season's bowl game.
"Any time we take the field, we think it's a championship game," Johnson said. "We know everybody is going to give that championship effort. When we scrimmage each other, we're fired up so definitely when we get to play another team we're going to be fired up."
Redwine echoed his fellow safety's sentiments and knows every players wearing a U on his helmet will be giving his best effort when the game kicks off on Dec. 27 at 5:15 p.m.
"We're fired up to play football," Redwine said. "It's another opportunity for me to come out here and play football with my teammates. It could've been the National Championship and we're going to approach it the same or it could've been a regular season game playing against a high school team. We're always going to be fired up."
Many of Miami's seniors are top pro prospects, but they are all relishing the opportunity to wear a Hurricane uniform one final time.
"I came back to play this final game with my brothers," Johnson said. "I mean any chance I get to play football, I'm going to take full advantage."
"We're all excited to be back on the football field doing what we love and now getting a rematch against a team we should've beat last year," St. Louis said.
In addition to finishing the 2018 season on a high note, Miami's players know what a win over Wisconsin would mean heading into next season.
"Everyone remembers when you win a bowl game," Harley said. "It's the last game. This game will give us a little hype, a little respect for next year and get us ready for next year. We're taking this bowl game seriously like it's a national championship."
"Next year is going to be a way better year than what this year was," sophomore running back DeeJay Dallas said. "I mean, we came into this season with high expectations and it didn't go how we wanted it to go. So, bounce back year. Revenge tour starts next week. So, I'm excited. We start next season off with Wisconsin, so that is how I am feeling about this."
Dee Jay preaching.
Love that kid.

CMR hamstrung them with awful play calling, our QBs were terrible and a ton of fans gave up on them. But imo this team never quit.
Expect them to come out and play hard. Hopefully Richt, Perry and our fans come through for the rest of them.

Looking at the list of the top recruits in Florida. Although I don't necessarily agree with some of the rankings, I think overall it is painfully obvious that the Canes lost many of the important recruiting battles.
There is a little bit of good news in that there are still some very good recruits left on the list. Right now, the Canes just simply need to perform well in the Bowl game, then hit the recruiting trail hard leading up to NSD.
The top remaining recruits are really only looking at 5-8 other Big Five programs. Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and the other 3-5 other Big Five programs that came into Florida, cherry picked top recruits and really wiped the floor with us so far have pretty much filled their classes during early signing period. The Canes should be in a good position to win some of the remaining recruiting battles. If they do, it will be a good class.

Williams, lingard, Hightower, cam and Pope should of played a lot more than they did this year! This is worrisome as obviously richt doesn’t play the playmakers/gamebreakers that should be in there (not Williams of course because we don’t know but how can we When the idiot HC would rather put rozier back in rather than Williams)

You post this a lot. I’m honestly curious what you base it on. Homer and DJ were among the ACC leaders in yards per carry and to me Pope didn’t show much all season when he got on the field.

Pretty good ypc by both....so if you can run the ball, but cannot beat people, what does that say?
It says your play caller, OC, and HC really do not have a clue how to win or even more important, teach and inspire people to want to win....in short...APATHY!!!
The head coach does not really care about winning or losing...mellow guy no intensity at all...does not matter, collect a check, and put your son in the position to be next...BUT....you got to win.....good man average coach has program headed in the wrong direction ..not working per his plans.
Posted by: VA Cane | December 21, 2018 at 09:48 AM
Still 10 or so guys are verbals that haven't signed yet or maybe some are silent until all-star games. About the same amount undecided. The one player I hated losing and that we shouldn't have lost to begin with is Ingrahm. Sorrells is sitting there and for some reason we haven't been hard on this kid. You can't tell me we couldn't find one O-line in the entire state as good or better than Nelson. With his weight they just need to put him at DE. Started late playing football and a former basketball player who needs 3 redshirt years to get to 300 and I mean good weight, with a proper diet.
Posted by: Herbieibis | December 21, 2018 at 09:52 AM
I would also say both backs gave a lot of effort after first hit, because the OL was so up and down.....never consistent. We had a somewhat lazy out of shape line....slow shuffle the feet never pick them up, jog to blocks, rarely down field blocking....this is on them to some point, but even more the position coach....who is not good....and further up the ladder the OC and HC whose job is to implement an attack offense not a floundering offense.....
Posted by: VA Cane | December 21, 2018 at 09:53 AM
You can't tell me we couldn't find one O-line in the entire state as good or better than Nelson.
This is a major concern for the O......throw it all over run it north south.....but you cannot do that without an OL.....and a good solid in shape muscular quick (notice I said quick) aggressive OL has not been here in a long time......one of my major issues....so important...
Posted by: VA Cane | December 21, 2018 at 09:56 AM
I can remember seeing KD and Co trot out on the field and think here we go attack time
....yes they were incredible athletes superior to what we field now....I remember being on the field at VT during warm ups....in the shadows of McKinney and Gonzalez warming up....huge guys....but you knew that team in all 3 phases were going to attack you beat you down....half the battle is the execution, effort and plan..
Now when the O trots out you shudder....same stuff every time...no blocking....poor QB execution and decisions...you know its gonna be a long day....and then you got to kick.....what a contrast...and its been the last 4 HCs and however many ADs they share it..and it trickles down to where the kids get the same attitude...Apathy .....this is not how you play football and we have to take a stand not sit back and accept it....
Posted by: VA Cane | December 21, 2018 at 10:06 AM
Agree with you VA. I
mo outside of Rosier it wasn't so much the players on the field as it was the position CMR put them in with some seriously conservative and unimaginative playcalling.
Posted by: Go Canes!! | December 21, 2018 at 10:14 AM
The d line must be taught technique...the oline must learn technique...if they are not going back and forth in practice winning some and losing some..but the technique has been mastered then they are not ready to be on the field. Football is a discipline sport. you do the technique over and over again until it you train your fast twitch muscles the technique is what do fall back on when you are fighting to win the personal battle. The o is not winning the personal battles because they are not sure what to do on a play.....each player should know the best way to dominate their battle because they are consistent in doing their technique. football is a discipline ..and then a matter of imposing your will. Thats why we are not winning.

Go - I don’t think you get it - just cause dee jay and Homer were good doesn’t mean they were more explosive, gamebreakers like these other 2. We needed more explosion on offense and these guys would of helped - nothing against a great guy DeeJay and homer but the most explosive best players should be playing
As for Pope - freaking Mark Richt never gave him a chance to get into a rhythm; instead he played cager, who dropped about every other pass thrown to him and always looked like he could care less, and Wiggins, who also dropped many a catchable ball!
You’ve got to play the best guys to give you a chance to score! Richt just acts and produces like he just doesn’t understand that the game is about scoring points- jmo
Posted by: AeroCane | December 21, 2018 at 10:29 AM
You cannot trust in your talent and speed..you can only trust in your practice..having 600 catches in practice or throwing 200 passes a day...these guys play like they are not doing their craft over and over again until it becomes second nature...
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | December 21, 2018 at 10:31 AM
no excuses..the only reason that we are losing is because we have not been disciplined in practice ..period...thats why i like the spread or the old way were we had 7 run plays and 10 pass plays...one person who is unsure of his responsibility and the play will not work...we cannot go to the next level until everyone is on the same page on every play...
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | December 21, 2018 at 10:35 AM
if they are not enjoying the repetition they need to change their major to home economics or something...if your a Cane you eat and drink football...

Miami
Great on the workout
I enjoy the rowing machine as well
And to respond to all your comments: it all starts with richt! The kids came in as top high school recruits (all the top schools wanted them) and the only thing that changed was the coaching and scheme - ie not developing them properly

I think perhaps you don’t get it.
At Georgia he had Todd Gurley, Nick Chubb and knowshon Moreno lead his teams in rushing as true freshmen. Imo if Lingard and Pope deserved more playing time they’d have gotten it.
The players on the field weren’t the issue, the play calls were.

Pump the brakes!
I don't care what you on a elliptical. If 18-23 year old, 200-300 lb men push your shit in for a 2 hour practice. You'll have more pain then just your azz.
Don't let poking your chest out on a blog lead your mind to delusions that manifest into comments 🤨
Posted by: CoCane | December 21, 2018 at 11:08 AM
we failed to do the simple things like catching the ball, hitting the receivers when they are open...i dont blame the players for not being ready to play...the coach must make sure the player is doing the simple things...we missed at least 14 points a game from dropping wide open fly pass or the qb did not hit the receiver...when you dont connect on those passes then it emboldens the defense...our passing discipline was worse than pop warner. We score on quick plays and we change the momentum...
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | December 21, 2018 at 11:10 AM
pain is only in a persons mind...ive played the game all my life...it is very painful to run at a 6 40 mile pace..especially when you are old...i used to run a 12 min mile every other day...when jj was coaching we beat the crap out of our opponent...they were begging for the game to get over in the fourth q...the most dominate teams u has ever had. ..these guys dont know that level.

I think that along with the play calling, some poor coaching, and apathy all around.... the biggest problem is the execution of the fundamentals.
Just because you were a 4 or 5 star guy in HS, ran a 4.4, were HS AA, were in the papers, or won state titles does not mean you are doing it right. When you are a better athlete you tend to cut corners. You can get by against weaker less talented opponents. So you get to college and think it still works. All of a sudden you are playing a Bama, Clemson, OSU, OK, MI, ND...or other sound teams....or maybe UVA, Duke, BC,GT...or LSU... you got that U on your hat and you think you are now empowered you are just better and can use talent...fuk executing fundamentals!...you are the shit....you are KD11, Andre J., Edge, Mount McKinney, Ray, J Vilma, Tez, Ed R, ST26, I mean keep naming them....and you aint Bro!!!!
and you aint HS JJ or even DE or Butch or the great ones that have been here....you cannot get the great talent....much less coach it!!!
So you don't teach it they do not execute it.....and you get by sometimes....against cupcakes....but teams better prepared, with a plan....and who execute beat yo AZZ!
Same with college to the NFL...guys get on that level and do not have the talent combined with the fundamentals and cannot make it....and when they get there.....they make so much $ and are such jerks they cannot be coached...they know better!!!
This program has its collective head up its AZZ!!! The BOT and AD are happy to be 7-5, no issues, graduate everyone, and play in a Mini Me Trojan Rubber Bowl!
The coaches for the most part do not teach fundamentals, do not get into the practices, do not demand execution, are happy getting paid, and are ok with it....just play the 4 and 5 stars!!
The kids are good kids who come here with a swollen head and wear U gear.....they are not taught to correct their flaws, taught new attitudes, held accountable, and they get to where its ok...Im not Ray or KD or ST...but I'm good I am at the U!!!!
Head up AZZ people....unaware and do not care....everything is lovely warm fuzzy!!!!
I just cannot coach that way.....I know I aint HS or JJ....but 41 years I have seen some things, coached in sandlot, HS and college....and sent a ton to college and some to NFL...helped fundamentals drilled into them....never had a losing season and won a lot of titles due to execution fundamentals accountability and coaching the guys over and over til they get it right and that you do football...family...job...life one way...the right way...give it all and learn something!!!!
JMO

Posted by: mi@mic@ne | December 21, 2018 at 11:58 AM
I guess I didn’t make my point clear - with the guys I mentioned above you’d have to be an idiot to not think we would of had a better chance of winning vs the guys who did play
It’s effing as simple as that - who gives us the better chance if scoring and winning?
Posted by: AeroCane | December 21, 2018 at 12:01 PM
Richt went through 4 loses and did not play a qb who could pass or bring in a back and receivers who had the talent to take it to the house. They should have been ready to step in..
Posted by: mi@mic@ne | December 21, 2018 at 12:05 PM
Same bs coach, same bs play calling and I bet we win at least 2 of 4 during our skid with the above playing

Is anybody going to NYC to see the game?
I grew up there as a kid as Dad was in FBI.....little far for me....if I thought it really mattered.....i would....but its just a minor bowl....much rather be paying 12 29....how about you?
I WOULD go to a game like that......just been so long for us
