I'm happy with ALL THREE hires!

Manny D., Blake Baker, and Major Applewhite.

GET ON THE BUS ALREADY, SOUP!

BigWindyCane1

IMO, the Canes will finish with a decent recruiting class with the new staff in place. I also predict a 2019 QB recruit and/or QB transfer this season with Applewhite and the offensive coaches on board.

I don't mind the DC hire at all. If Manny doesn't like what his DC brings, he can always step in and take over. I'm sure we're still running Diaz's schemes!

Wonderful news that Edgerrin James and Ed Reed are nominated for the HOF. I can't believe it. Finally, getting some respect. Let your mind wonder back to the great days when they played for the U. Feels like a religious experience.

Miami finished on a 17-2 run before the half. Canes up 45-37.

If this team had Huell, they would probably only have 1 loss right now. Losing him for the season is going to hurt us big time!

As a coordinator he over relies on designed QB runs and gets the starter hurt as a result a lot . . .

Your blaming the play calling the reason a QB gets hurt? Seriously??

I used to respect him from his time making Mack Brown look like an idiot for playing Chris Simms over him in college while the losses piled up, but ever since he hired doofus and lost his job because of it I'm not so sure he wasn't a fucking idiot all along who just got lucky that Chris Simms was a bust who choked worse than Miami's own gold hen girl loser for life against the primary rival dude.

As a coordinator he over relies on designed QB runs and gets the starter hurt as a result a lot . . .

Just hope Applewhite learned from the whole Ed Oliver incident. That was just dumb....

Congrats to Edgerrin James and Ed Reed! Finalist for the NFL HOF. Both deserve to be enshrined! It's a Cane thing.

BigWindyCane

If it’s true what one former Canes player said that Gus Felder failed to show up for an early morning workout, that is inexcusable. At least Swasey would show up for workouts.

Winning programs can’t have that lazy culture permeating throughout the team. It should be the other way around, where strength coaches are pushing players. That would never happen under Saben

Some Manny

▪ Though Manny Diaz holds Larry Fedora in high regard in his offensive coordinator search, Fedora has been linked to the Temple head coaching job and might want to pursue a head coaching job instead, with UM operating on a faster timetable than Temple.

If it’s not Fedora, then former Houston coach Major Applewhite — who worked with Diaz as Texas — looms as a strong offensive coordinator option. And there’s a mystery third candidate....

It wouldn’t be surprising if Miami Southridge coach Sedrick Irvin emerges as a candidate in a support staff role. The former Alabama staffer under Nick Saban previously worked at East Carolina, and Diaz likes him.

Arkansas State assistant head coach Taylor Trooper, who coached receivers at Auburn and is a good recruiter, is among many with interest in joining Diaz’s staff. He had not heard from Diaz as of Wednesday.

▪ Diaz doesn’t mind opening next season against the Gators in Orlando.

“I don’t know if we’d want it any other way,” Diaz sad. “Those are the games at Miami you have to prove yourself about. … You come to Miami to win those games, and if you’re not winning those games you can’t look around and say it’s someone else’s fault. That has been the consistent theme from all the former players that have come back to speak to our team - `This thing takes off when you guys decide it takes off.’

“We’re not going to beat Florida because of some magical offense. We’ll beat Florida because guys on our team will make plays to help win the football game. … We have to create that identity.

“Whatever has been on the outside to give us a reason not to be our best, that reason has been revoked. We’re either good enough or not good enough, and if we’re not good enough we have to recruit better.”

▪ Diaz said it was “very difficult” to fire the whole offensive staff but felt it was necessary.

“There has to be accountability,” he said. “The University of Miami cannot rank second to last in anything. You can’t turn around and say `We’re going to demand this of you as a player’ and then if you don’t do it there’ll be consequences. As coaches we know that’s the case.”

Diaz recounted how at Texas “I was the one that was run out of town, and everyone thought it would be better after that. Was I accountable for what happened? Yes I was. Was I responsible for everything that was causing those problems? Of course I wasn’t.”

He added that “it’s very, very difficult but to make the cultural changes that needed to happen and to hire the offensive coordinator we wanted to hire. We had to have some flexibility to really reset the vision of what we were on that side of the ball.”

▪ Since Diaz was hired, UM has sold about 50 new season tickets. And on Wednesday, 300 season-ticket holders from 2017 renewed for next season.

UM sold about 46,000 season tickets last year and can sell an additional 1,500 to 2,000 new ones

Even the Wisky game was only 14-3 at half, even with Malik’s three picks including yet another free TD for the opposing team.

Under Iaz our D won or kept us in 90-95% of our games.

You can only say that about a handful of DCs.

Herbieibis

The Her says this, ok maybe our defense has not looked good against the likes of Wisky, Clemson & LSU but our OH Fence has not been much of a help either by leaving the defense in tough spots. The good thing is Manny made adjustments to usually stem the tide. Yes the dam punting didn't help the defense either. Also we have yet to build enough depth at certain positions. We have enough talent to win the coastal and it should be easy in doing it but sadly we can't throw a football or on some cases catch it. The previous offensive staff failed miserably in development, except maybe Hartley. Feagles and Spicer's punting probably got him canned.
No matter Manny will get it right. As The Herb has said on here many times, we need finishers in recruiting. When u have 16 decomits there is a big problem and the sorry offense not only effected the offense but the defensive side of recruiting as well.
I know this dude was probably fed up with the shyt he saw on offense. Either Apple or Fedora I'm cool with. Out with the old pro style and In With the new. Once we find that needle in the hay stack QB we will start to roll. Once the Oh starts to roll the croots will get excited and then and only then will we ascend to our proper place and once there, the trick is to stay there. Depth of Talent is all we need. That Is The Word From The Herb!

UMike

Last season we were 10-0, ranked #2 in the country and just absolutely smoked ND... And for a moment my PSCD was gone. That shyt didn't last long

UMike

Diaz may of had some flaws, but without a Doubt the D was good enough to win more games had the offense did their part. Even the best defenses have games they give up a ton of points. During our 4 game skid we scored 13, 14, 12 and 21. Take out the wisky game and the D kept it close enough long enough, but the Other couldn't take advantage

We could have hired Clemson or LSU’s coordinators and he would have left.

Guy has been a three year force, time to get paid.

thirstybuzzardcane

Herman said the biggest thing that sold him on Applewhite was that he was willing to learn and adapt.

"It’s not Major Applewhite’s offense. It’s not Tom Herman’s offense. It’s the University of Houston’s offense," said Herman. "When you get at our point in our careers, a lot of guys go, ‘Well, this is how I do things.’ Well, I need a guy that can take what we’ve done — whether it was at Ohio State, Iowa State or Rice — and say here it is, learn it and if you have something that fits within our core beliefs and values and can make us better, I’m all for it. …

"He’s called plays everywhere from Rice to Alabama to Texas so that stage on game day was not gonna be too big for him. And he’s also a guy who’s played quarterback at the highest level of college football and coached some guys at the highest level."

At Houston, Applewhite and Herman take over what was an inconsistent offense that ranked 55th in yardage, 85th in Red Zone TD percentage and 93rd in third down conversions. Applewhite described their offensive philosophy as "taking two-back principles to spread formations and being able to apply those to a tempo world." Herman said Applewhite will call plays.

"(Herman) knows I’m not coming in here to ‘Bill Walsh’ the deal and saying I know everything about football and I don’t need your help," said Applewhite. "I told him on the interview, I’m not interested in taking this boat too far from shore."

Fedora has more to lose if he goes to Temple. If he doesn't do good than expected there, you can kiss goodbye getting a head coaching job at a P5 college.

Now if he does well as OC (which he probably will with the athletes we have), then he'll probably sign a big contract somewhere!

I think I would go the safe route and be OC. Heck knows what kind of players you'll be working with at Temple. At least at Miami you know what you got.

Terrance Sullivan

TonyCane Diaz is making close to what Richt is making. Miami is not being cheap anymore and quite frankly if you are a Power 5 school you will pay around 3.5 million and above. Even the High Level Group of 5 are starting to go in the 2.5 and above range.

orange 'n green in the vein

Manny fired GD from the sid-tard side of Fake Lames and he's now reduced to cheering for Canada instead?

Maybe this year can still be better than last at this rate then . . .

Go Ca

From CIS:

Here's 2018 for Louisiana Tech. I think overall a good defense, not a great defense compared to some of the other group of 5 defenses that just dominate their competition.
I've got confidence in Manny who hired this dude but when we got Manny I was all in, this one i'm unsure of and will have to let time tell. I'm assuming Manny wouldn't bring in anyone who would screw up the success we're having on Defense and this guy's resume in terms of performance and results in certain metrics is very similar to Manny's. I

Louisiana Tech 2018 (including 129 FBS teams and all games played for every team)
Scoring Defense: 39th @ 22.9ppg
Rushing Defense: (YPC) 45th @ 3.96 ypc
Passing Defense: 29th @ 191 ypg
Total Defense: 27th @ 341 ypg
Sacks: 4th @ 3.46 per game
TFL: 12th @ 7.77 per game
Opp 3rd Down %: 33rd @ 35.3%
Opponent long rushing plays Over 10 yards: 71st @ 68 (miami 85th here)
Opponent long rushing plays Over 20 yards: 91st @ 22 (miami 75th)
Opponent long passing plays Over 20 yards: 58th @ 41 plays over 20 yards
Opponent long passing plays Over 30 yards: 18th @ 13 plays over 30 yards

Played two power 5 teams and not sure the results even matter. LA tech was out manned heavily (they did play LSU better than we did)

LA Tech vs Miss st.
Miss state wins 45-3, Miss state 532 yards and zero turnovers. LA tech had 3 sack and 5 TFL

LA tech vs LSU
LSU wins 38-28, LA tech out gained LSU 417 to 407, LSU had one turnover, LA tech had 2. LA tech had 1 sack and 4 TFL

If you take away those two games, which I believe is fair, It shows what I believe to be a bit more accurate of a picture of his defense. Very similar to Manny's tenure

I took out everyone's power 5 opponents and then ranked LA tech vs the other group of 5 schools to see how they were against similar competition over a bigger sample size.
Here is Group of 5 ranking for La Tech for the 10 games not including against power 5 opponents out of 64 teams*

LA tech 2018 vs non-power 5 teams ranked among 64 total non-power 5 teams
Scoring Defense: 8th @ 19.9ppg
Rushing Defense: (YPC) 18th @ 3.73 ypc
Passing Defense: 11th @ 184 ypg
Total Defense: 8th @ 321 ypg
Yards per play given up: 10th @ 4.76 yards per play
Sacks: 3rd @ 3.6 per game
TFL: 5th @ 8.3 per game
Opp 3rd Down %: 6th @ 30.77%

these next one's are just to see how aggressive the defense is and how likely LA tech was to give up a big scrimmage play. Miami although a great defense, ranks poorly at these as well
Opponent long rushing plays Over 10 yards: 31st @ 51 rushing plays over 10 yards
Opponent long rushing plays Over 20 yards: 35th @ 16
Opponent long passing plays Over 20 yards: 24th @ 30 plays over 20 yards
Opponent long passing plays Over 30 yards: 10th @ 9 plays over 30 yards

OF NOTE* Jaylon Ferguson who plays at LA tech just broke Terrell Suggs FBS career sack record.

The scheme definitely causes mayhem as LA tech ranked among the nations best in TFL and Sacks. Very similarly to us in that aspect, I believe we won't see much of a change at all and Manny felt like this guy deserved to be the head honcho in charge over the two friends that were just recently promoted, which means he must have felt pretty damn strongly that this guys would be better for us.

Patke and banda have been with Diaz longer, as baker was only with him one year in a working capactiy (was a grad assistant at Texas for two years with Daiz) at La tech as the safeties coach for Diaz. He then took over DC as Diaz left to go to Mississippi state in 2015 before coming here.

If anything, we should be happy that we still have Manny who will FOR SURE have his hands on the defense as it's his pride and joy and we have three up and comers in patke, baker, and banda who have all be with diaz in 2-3 different schools learning exactly how he runs his defense and how to be successful at it. I think it'll be a very clean transition

Just putting this out there - would it affect his buyout from NC if he takes an OC position vs. head coach position? Those buyouts are usually based on the new salary of the person. So the money might not matter as NC still needs to pay him. Plus he can live in South Florida

Because he sees the athletes we have and the way they’ve been underutilized as a great opportunity. He doesn’t have to assemble a staff or worry about being hindered by a large buyout at Temple.

Come in for two years, turn around an offense with nowhere to go but up, establish South Florida recruiting ties then bolt to a Power 5 job again.

And maybe Temple first choose him.

Say it again Solar. 12 Mil, no headaches of worry about the whole team, can lay on da beach and we'll give sum chump change 1.5 mil. Can't ask for any thing better, unless u just have to be in charge.
Well a no name for Dc. I'm sure the croots are scratching their heads on that one. We need recruiters. U know he's beating down the doors of those NR recruits. 4 & 5 stars just hang the phone up.

This is the reason you take the OC job at Miami vs HC job at Temple

The release goes on to say that Fedora will receive a $12 million buyout — $3 million for each of the four years remaining on his contract.

You can hang out at Miami and get Cane dollars to go with your 12 million until something much bigger than Temple comes along
That is all
