Twenty-six student-athletes earned degrees Thursday from the University of Miami in 2018 Fall Commencement exercises, which were conducted at the Watsco Center on the UM campus in Coral Gables. The UM student-athletes were among the more than 1,000 University of Miami undergraduate and graduate students who earned their degrees during the fall ceremonies.
Graduates from all of the University of Miami's schools and colleges were recognized by name and walked across the stage to be congratulated by University President Julio Frenk and their respective academic deans.
"Today is a memorable day for 26 of our student-athletes as they achieve their goal of earning a degree from the University of Miami," Director of Athletics Blake James said. "It's a testament to the hard work and dedication displayed by these outstanding young men and women, and I couldn't be prouder of them. I can't wait to see where their life's journey takes them from here, and I hope they realize that they are always welcome back and will always be a part of our U Family."
Seven of Miami's athletics programs were represented in the fall graduation ceremonies. The football team led all programs with 13 graduates, including 2018 All-ACC honorees Jaquan Johnson, Michael Jackson, Sheldrick Redwine and Tyree St. Louis.
Women's golf standout Dewi Weber will earn her bachelor's degree in advertising/motion pictures. She is one of the most decorated student-athletes in UM golf history as a three-time All-American.
The list also features several former Hurricanes who returned to school to complete their degrees, including former First-Team All-America defensive back Daryl Williams, who played at UM from 1989-91 before moving on to an 11-year NFL career with the Cincinnati Bengals and Seattle Seahawks. He was an NFL Pro Bowl honoree in 1997 and inducted into the UM Hall of Fame in 2017.
Former men's basketball standout Darius Rice also returned to earn his degree. Rice ranks fourth in career scoring at UM with 1,865 points and was a three-time All-BIG EAST honoree. He played at UM from 2000-04 and has had a 14-year professional basketball career.
Additionally, the list includes baseball standouts Danny Garcia, Ricky Eusebio and Brandon Lopez, each of whom went on to play professional baseball, and Tyriq McCord, a former football linebacker who played in 51 career games.
First in a long time!

Damn Solar. Not many guys can tie together a spread offense, Amazon and Walmart and make it work. That's pretty impressive.
Also, looks like Willis is going to sit out the pinstripe bowl. Doesn't have anything to prove and probably doesn't want to risk injury before the draft.

Willis not playing in the bowl game

The Miami Hurricanes’ search for a DC to replace Manny Diaz is over. The Canes have promoted both Ephraim Banda and Jonathan Patke to Co-Defensive Coordinators. Additionally, DL coach Jess Simpson has been promoted to Associate Head Coach.
Posted by: canes4us | December 14, 2018 at 05:44 PM
Tim Reynolds: Mark Richt’s moves today certainly help solidify recruiting at what could have been an even more volatile time for the Canes. Plus, Banda is enormously popular among players.

BREAKING: Looks like the nationwide search is over. #UM has named Ephraim Banda and Jonathan Patke as co-defensive coordinators and promoted defensive line coach Jess Simpson to associate head coach.

How does Patke rate over Rumph
Posted by: KYcane | December 14, 2018 at 05:48 PM
OK, this is most definetly a WTF moment in time.
Not happy with the decisions. From this I can conclude that Richt wants YES men, not anyone who will challenge him.
Posted by: 58 Straight | December 14, 2018 at 06:00 PM
Incredibly lazy and stupid move by Richt. God this guy is clueless. This recruiting class is garbage already with no hope of saving it. Wouldn't it have made sense if you were going to have a first time defensive coordinator to bring in an ace recruiter like Corey Raymond. Our 2020 class would have been stacked with someone like him. Plus Co-Defensive coordinators? There is no more spinning this garbage Richt is over the hill and plain worthless. No worries next year when they go 6-6 or 7-5 they can fire all of them.

Only thing I can think of is Diaz made the same offer. It’s the double edged sword of early signing periods.
Posted by: Go Canes!! | December 14, 2018 at 06:07 PM
It's coming out that Diaz was ready to promote and take all three coaches.
Going to trust CMR knows what he's doing here. Defense has been the strength of ths team and these guys have all been an intergral part of it on the field and in recruiting.
He just better use the open coaching spot on an OC or passing game coordinator position.

I'm not really upset by this. Banda was groomed by Diaz and is full of energy.
Posted by: UMike | December 14, 2018 at 07:28 PM
Promoted Banda to keep Manny from taking him. WTF Patke. How long has this dude even been a coach. Just effing great, now they all will have to double up, coaching a position and game planning not that they didn't have some input to begin with. Whose going to be flashing signals during the game. Maybe they alternate halves where one is in the box the first half and then one goes to the sidelines.
Richt has smoked one to many this time. It going to help salvage this dumpster diving crooting class that's coming in. If Banda doesn't pull Stephens and Hasselwood, Richt's hidden agenda fails.
Posted by: Herbieibis | December 14, 2018 at 07:45 PM
So are they going to take turns calling plays?
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | December 14, 2018 at 08:15 PM
Still completely dumbfounded as to why we offered a ship to a kid that weighs 245 lbs, to play OT. In the year 2525 he might be ready to help us. This ain't a baseball farm system we are running, where hopefully u can help us in 3 to 4 years. That's what grad. Trans. And jucco's are 4.
Posted by: Herbieibis | December 14, 2018 at 08:15 PM
I agree with Umike, I'm not that upset about it. I would like for Banda or Patke to call plays in our bowl game. Diaz should just oversee them!

Safe move from Richt.
NOT totally stupid... but kind of "typical" of CMR playing it safe.
If we can stop the run of recruits flipping, then it's acceptable.
Does NOTHING for the Offense, however.

Posted by: UMike | December 14, 2018 at 07:28 PM
Energy is great when you're a player on the field... but if you're a coach you need X's and O's!
Posted by: WWIN | December 14, 2018 at 08:59 PM
Diaz had a good year this year but he wasn't great himself!
Don't @ me
Posted by: WWIN | December 14, 2018 at 09:01 PM
Willie, I like a coach that gets fired up and engages with the players. We could have the opposite like CMR. We are still Miami, we weren't going to hire some big time name. The system will probably stay largly the same. I will take Banda over D'No any MF day, so it could be worse. I would assume they are on a short leash.
Posted by: UMike | December 14, 2018 at 09:13 PM
SHORT LEASH? How many years do they get while getting it right from the bong smoker?

Posted by: WWIN | December 14, 2018 at 08:56 PM
No defense of the OC position offered. But... does 1 division champ and 1 bowl win (as an underdog no less) with possibly another in 3 years count?? Sounds better than notsoGolden & Onion.
Posted by: DallasTX Cane | December 14, 2018 at 09:29 PM
If you don't know X's and O's and won't matter how much energy you got... you'll need that energy to pack up your belongings out of your office lol!
We had 1.5 million to pay.... how come we couldn't get a big name? Stop buying into the whole UM is broke because it's a a private school narrative.
We don't know if they'll be better than D'no or not. LOL at Pastor having a corch on a short leash!
Posted by: WWIN | December 14, 2018 at 09:31 PM
Posted by: DallasTX Cane | December 14, 2018 at 09:29 PM
Golden won the coastal once.
Golden was facing a death penalty scare, never had a full roster and didn't have the money to pay assistant's like Pastor... so what's PMR's excuse?
Posted by: WWIN | December 14, 2018 at 09:35 PM
WWIN:
Say what. U should thank God we had Diaz, otherwise we would be 3-9 and a ship without a rudder. We don't even have any oars. What he did for the defense is definitely a wtf moment but that is the least of our problems. The offense, the special teams, the QB's and the recruiting are our biggest problems and nothing has been solved.

Posted by: Herbieibis | December 14, 2018 at 09:38 PM
I never said Diaz was the weakest link... of course he was better than our offense and special teams but what is that saying? Who did we face this year that was good offensively?
Let's not forget that Diaz was No'd in Texas... how many good years has Diaz had as a DC in his 13yrs... 3 or 4???
Posted by: WWIN | December 14, 2018 at 09:52 PM
Here's Zion Nelsons highlights. IMO the kid looks pretty strong already. Very very quick off the ball. Video doesn't show any pass protection though. Needs to get to around 290lb which no doubt he will.
