University of Miami redshirt senior defensive tackle Gerald Willis III added to his postseason awards list Monday, picking up second-team All-America honors from both the Associated Press and Football Writers Association of America.
After a standout senior season, Willis was named a second-team All-American by Sports Illustrated and The Athletic last week.
A New Orleans native, Willis started all 12 games in the regular season and finished with a career-high 59 total tackles, four sacks, one fumble recovery and a whopping 18.0 tackles for loss, the most by any defensive tackle in FBS.
A midseason addition the Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation's top defensive player, Willis posted five games with at least two tackles for loss and led the ACC in tackles for loss.
Willis' 18 tackles for loss were the most by a Hurricane since Jacksonville Jaguars' Pro Bowl defensive end Calais Campbell had 20.5 in 2006. Willis was named a midseason All-America by both ESPN and The Athletic.
Willis' selection as an All-America marks the second straight year a Hurricane has earned the honor; safety Jaquan Johnson was named a second-team All-American by Sports Illustrated and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) last December.
So apparently we are flipping App State commits now. Go Canes, please spin this in a good way for me... please!

I actually like getting kids like this. Give me quick guys on this o-line. I rather have agile guys who can gain good weight than some fat ass who has rocks for feet like we have now!
Winston came in at 240, so I have no problems with this kid. Obviously he'll redshirt and get stronger and bigger. He'll probably get to 290 by the time he's ready to play.

Let's bring Randy Shannon back where he belongs.
Posted by: JaxCane | December 13, 2018 at 11:09 PM
jaxcane,
UCF was 86th in the nation in total defense.
I don't know if we score enough points to have Randy running the defense.
We had the number 2 defense in the nation and we struggled make a bowl game
Maybe Shannon could recruit his own players here and do ok

Very good points.
Posted by: Go Canes!! | December 13, 2018 at 11:30 PM
How could we have a top 5 defense and an offense at the other end of the spectrum. A fifty ranked offense and at worst we are 10-2.
Losing Diaz has left The Herb numb and frustrated. This dude is exactly what we had needed for so long and as quick as he came he was gone.
We've lost plenty of good coaches over the years and we always seemed to rebound but for those 14 years or so he got their it was a nightmare. I mean we we're right there on the doorstep again and now we are right back to where we were all those 14 years.

There are fans in Morgantown, Athens and Columbus saying the same thing about their defenses.
Oklahoma was a total Georgia collapse from saying it too. They got in the playoff with the 108th ranked D in the country.
Interesting time in college football. Been saying it for years here as far back as the Golden days. If you want to win in today's game you better be able to score a ton of points.

Yeah Go but no telling where we might be if we had to face all those spread throwing machines in that conference. Luckily we didn't face any good throwing qb's.
Posted by: Herbieibis | December 14, 2018 at 09:43 AM
This recent series of decommits is alarming. There is no sugar-coating this. Something is needed to reverse the Canes trends on the recruiting trail. The Canes need to bring in Haselwood and few others to reverse this alarming trend. There are still some good recruits on the board, but the Canes have to close the deal.

2020 CB Henry Gray gone. Next!
Posted by: Herbieibis | December 14, 2018 at 10:47 AM
The Herb is not concerned with losing 3 star players, which s good many have been But when U start reaching for reaches now I start to worry. The 2020 guys we have lost, we have time to replace or get them back in the fold.
For this year though, it looks like this class will have to take one for the team. If we don't end up with Bogel, Hasselwood Stevenson and Zepperer, we are in some serious trouble. We can not lay an egg in the bowl game, offensively. Losing Manny at this time really stinks. It's bad enough with an offense that is pedestrian. I don't see Richt being able to salvage this class with nothing more than a patch work job. Hope THE HERB is dead wrong but this weekend is make or break for this class no matter about the Feb. date.

Miami Hurricane football is Sears.
We relied on our good name and reputation to bring in customers.
Amazon brought the spread and old brands like Wal-Mart/ Clemson changed their philosophy and went to the spread to survive, and they flourish.
We, Sears/ Miami brought in a CEO that believes people love to shop like they did in the 80s and 90s...they don't.

Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | December 14, 2018 at 12:19 PM
Wow! Now this is exciting! If Raymond comes, that is definitely a great sign that the defense will be able to recruit and play hard. Corey Raymond will definitely help us take recruiting up to the next level and get some of those top recruits the Canes have missed on recently.
Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | December 14, 2018 at 02:04 PM
I can see how the Canes could hire a DC to coach LBs/strikers, then move that ninth coaching position to the offensive side of the ball.
Maybe it is wishful thinking, but the Canes should pick up some coaching help on offense. With the talent that Canes can recruit, their offense should be scoring 35-40 points a game. It is a matter of developing a scheme and game plan geared to maximize the talents of the players on the roster.

Only way Raymond leaves is to become our coordinator. The bad thing is if u can call it a bad thing, he has never been a coordinator. This would be trial by fire. The great thing is he is a finisher on the recruiting trail. Now he has had good fortune recruiting in Louisiana where their aren't any big time comp. in state for their top recruits. Here he would be up against FSU and Flo. Plus everybody else. Not to many Louisana boys leave the state.
The last time we hired a Coordinator with no experience, that turned sour fast. I'm sure we all remember the Tim Walton experiment. He lasted one year and Shannon canned him.
