University of Miami red-shirt senior defensive tackle Gerald Willis III was recognized for his outstanding season with second-team All-America honors from Sports Illustrated, the publication announced Thursday.
A New Orleans native, Willis delivered a dominant final year with the Hurricanes en route to national honors. Willis started all 12 games and finished with a career-high 59 total tackles, four sacks, one fumble recovery and a whopping 18.0 tackles for loss, the most by any defensive tackle in FBS.
A midseason addition the Chuck Bednarik Award as the nation's top defensive player, Willis posted five games with at least two tackles for loss and the led the ACC in the category.
Willis' 18 tackles for loss were the most by a Hurricane since Jacksonville Jaguars' Pro Bowl defensive end Calais Campbell had 20.5 in 2006. Willis was named a mid-season All-America by both ESPN and The Athletic.
Willis' selection to the All-America Second Team by SI represents Miami's second straight year with such an honor; safety Jaquan Johnson was named a second-team All-American by the publication last December.

If you look at his story after transferring from UF, Willis is one of the greatest stories in college football. The Canes coaches were patient and worked with him to help him get his off-the-field issues handled first. They didn’t force him to play before he was ready, and they created an environment where he could overcome those issues and live up to his potential. Willis had one of the best seasons for a DL since Calais Campbell.
Now, Willis has a chance to play in a bowl game against one of the best OLs in college football. He will also have the Senior Bowl. IMO, Willis will dominate. IMO, once NFL executives and scouts see him perform on those stages and view his film, Willis will move up draft boards.
Also, Willis is and will be a great recruiting pitch for DT recruits and their families. He demonstrated that the Canes coaches care about more than just football, but they will also develop their DTs into all Americans and high draft picks.

Happy birthday to all who need a birthday wish..do we have an oc yet? if the bot cant give us a good football and basketball team can he at least throw a bone our way and give us a good baseball team?

It will be nice if the Canes can get a couple of those Lakeland kids. Lakeland beat St. Thomas last night. Lakeland is back in a major way. They have speed and can really play. The Canes sent a group of coaches to visit them last week.
Posted by: BigWindyCane | December 08, 2018 at 10:08 AM
Yeah it would be nice to get them both BUT the Cane's weren't going after Summerall that hard to begin with, so Iook for Gators to reel both as they are a package deal.
Posted by: Herbieibis | December 08, 2018 at 10:32 AM
Watching Palmetto Raiders 11 year olds who have more good players than the team from Illinois. Palmetto clearly has more speed and talent. Its sad that they will not know the history of the Canes dominance. The pipe line is still loaded but the bot has failed to pick good coaches.. we have enough talent in our back yard to dominate college football..very sad.

Summerall is a real nice player, so missing out on him and the TE Zipperer is a loss. Summerall had some nice tackles against Edgewater, St. Thomas Aquinas and other teams in the FHSAA playoffs. The 2020 RB looked real good in the State Championship game.
Miami Northwestern plays Armwood in the 6A State Championship game at 3pm in Orlando.

Richt is still the OC, the other Richt is still the QB coach and Searels is still the OL coach. If those fagaloons came to my crib to recruit my son. I would treat them like Jehovah witnesses. Let them see me peak through the blinds and disrespectfully yell nobody's home!
I'm a lifetime canes fan. If I feel like that, how do you think our recruiting targets and their families feel???
His own brother-in-law said hell to the f*ck no!
Richt's sister tried to salvage the situation through pillow talk...
Richt's sister: Honey... My brother will take good care of our son and teach him to be a better man. He's his uncle. This is family. Trust him 😍 Pleeeeease
Rob Johnson: I already raised him to be a better man. Your brother and nephew are f*cking idiots. I'm going to sleep 🤫
Richt's sister: Fine! You won't be getting any for a while mister smurf nuts. 😡
Rob Johnson: Pornhub biatch! Goodnight! Snatches the laptop and a blanket, then heads for the couch.
David commits to LSU the next day...

If Jack Allison lights it up for WVU in the Bowl game, then that should send a clear message to CMR that a new QB coach and OC should be hired
Posted by: BigWindyCane1 | December 08, 2018 at 03:12 PM
well put CoCane. Couldn't have said it any better. Richt and his fagaloons are blistering idiots. Why would top recruits come to the U. None of the reasons why they would are better than the other top programs thats for sure.
Posted by: PapaCane | December 08, 2018 at 03:15 PM
If the oc has a johnson at qb then he needs a big set of balls..just sayin
Posted by: [email protected]@ne | December 08, 2018 at 04:04 PM
the problem is not the Qb sherlock. the problem is coaching not developing the Qb and using him to his strengths. Clearly what Richt and his fagaloons are lacking as a coaching staff. they are not developing the offensive players which are talented 4 stars coming out of HS.
Posted by: PapaCane | December 08, 2018 at 04:23 PM
Lol naw it's all the above Coaches and Players. If you think N'Kosi or Malik for that matter is good. Please put down the Damn Dope. They are mediocre at best and Suck at worst. Our Receivers are mediocre at best and at worst Suck. Yesssss Coaching deserves blame but giving these players passes us just as pathetic. Do better.

So I guess Belichek, Johnson, Shula, Landry, Knoll, Carroll, Walsh, were awful coaches because College All Americans bummed in the Pros. That's how dumb the logic of College Coaches are Bums if High School All Americans don't pan out. What you do in High School is great but it's high school, when you get to college you have to prove it all over again. If you get to the Pros what you did in college don't mean didley poo you have to earn your keep in the pros. That applies to coaches as well. And that applies to life in general. I can't keep living off of I was the man in high school my employer or potential employer is going to look at me and say show me what you got or get your ham and egger arse out of my face. Do better People. Lame Brain Blogging. Go outside get some fresh air have a good beverage and come back and get back to blogging better.

if you are right Terrance than The U is garbage beyond repair any time soon and time to hit the reset button and bring in a new coach.

It's funny how the defense that was garbage and needed talent all of a sudden started balling once Diaz got a hold of them. The offense that was balling has gotten worse since Richt got a hold of them. Everything starts with coaching. Development and system is what makes players better. If it's the players, why don't the players commit to Richt's offense? Since they don't need his coaching to get good...
Keep blaming the players Sully.
Let's see what Allison does with WV coaching staff. The proof will be in the pudding...
Posted by: CoCane | December 08, 2018 at 04:54 PM
I am blaming all. What is hard to comprehend about that.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | December 08, 2018 at 05:14 PM
Show me where I said the coaches are blameless. I will wait. Just because I am not on just the coaches are the problem only dog pile Some how I am only blaming the players only is laughable. Richt Sr and Jr and Searles are not getting it done no doubt. I still think Richt screwed up pushing BK out early and basically running Allison out for basically Rosier and Perry who so far are average at best. But some to most on here want to make Perry out to be this great untapped resource who is just being held back and I don't buy it. Some thought Rosier was better than he was but reality set in. We shall see how it turns out but to Me the Coaches and Players are on the clock they all sold us a Bill of Goods. They told us we were Getting a Bone In Ribeye Steak from a Great Steakhouse instead we got a Sirloin Steak from Applebee's lol.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | December 08, 2018 at 05:24 PM
What's good CGNC? It's hard to believe in this modern day of offensive explosiveness that we had an offense which struggled putting points on the board? I went back and looked at N'Kosi Perry high school highlights and thought to myself did CMR ever thought of incorporating some of his high school passing system he used then? I would not be surprised if Jack Allison plays well in the West Virginia system.

Man I remember a few years ago when I decided to take a break from Canespace, this guy named Terrance Sullivan was just starting to post.
I said man this guy stays calm and courteous and doesn't let these shyty Canes teams get to him.
Now I see even the most level headed fans eventually get tired of swimming upstream in Shyt Creek
Give em hell Sully.

Terrence,
The Herb hears u Dog! The way I look at this cluster Crap is this, the dam coaches failed us on office, with this antiquated offense. Also the players have an obligation to their teammates and their selves to be the best they can be and not be a distraction. All our QB'S have been suspended this past year for some stupid shyt.
Myself, I thought Allison was going to be the man but I guess the vibes he got, he wasn't going to have a chance.
Perry, in my opinion is not the answer long term. At this point he is to immature.
Richt has to settle on an offense that suits our talent. He has failed, so far in that department. He has been to inconsistent in his recruiting certain positions.
We have a nice wish list and over half on that list are just that a wish or prayer. Out of the main kids that we are recruiting now, we may get 3 of them. I think we end up blanked on the OLine, QB, and RB at the early signing period. This means they will have to scatch, Claw and reach to fill our needs. We need talent, not a bunch of gap fillers.
Richt has screwed this offense up and I can't blame kids for not coming here.
What sucks, is we have to wait until after the bowl game before or if he makes changes and if he doesn't we are in a world of distress on the crooting trail.

FSU is going after Briles! WTF?!?!?! If Richt doesn't bring an OC in, and FSU gets Briles I'm done!!!
Posted by: thirstybuzzardcane | December 08, 2018 at 10:13 PM
Been saying this since Game 1.... coaches got to coach, but players also got to play. Schemes matter, development matters... a lot. No doubt. BUT... catching the dam ball when it hits your hands, passing the ball where your guy has a chance to catch, maybe even hitting a receiver in stride once in a blue moon, beating the guy in front of you to a spot to actually block, NOT jumping offside, etc etc etc... these things also matter AND have been part of what makes these players “great” since they played youth. U can’t tell me bad coaching causes this type of bs play. Bad coaching doesn’t FIX it when it needs fixing, but lazy players 1/2 assin crappy effort is the cause. Football is 75% mental effort determination and work. Even in this crappy scheme, I’ve seen too many open receivers drop passes, never get thrown to, or thrown uncatchable crap passes to give the players a pass. I agree Sully, no one escapes the smell of this turd

It’s not a coincidence that Tyler Murray wins the Heisman this season and Baker Mayfield won last season. Lincoln Riley really knows how to coach offense
Posted by: BigWindyCane | December 08, 2018 at 10:41 PM
It's the corching not the players! How else are the defensive players performing but not the offensive players???
Mark Pope and Lingard both 5☆ players and can't get on the field... SMH

Posted by: DallasTX Cane | December 08, 2018 at 10:29 PM
EVERYTHING you described here comes down to coaching! Is it not Dugans job to teach the WR's how to catch or not? If players are half assing should they be on the field... who's putting em out there... themselves?
The main job of a WR coach is for the WR's to CATCH the ball!
Posted by: WWIN | December 08, 2018 at 11:03 PM
HC bears ultimate responsibility for everything. He’s the captain of the ship. Never will say or believe otherwise. But if a guy cant catch by the time he’s a 17 yr old highly desired D1 level recruit, then U really gonna blame anyone other than brick hands himself and the dumbass that recruits guys who can’t catch?!?
The coaches bear the ultimate responsibility. I have never felt or thought otherwise. But give me a break with you’re unwillingness to assign any responsibility or blame to the guys actually playing the game. Every guy playing was great in HS. Some were better than others but just to get to play D1 ball, especially at a Power 5 program, means U were pretty freaking good in HS. So now U give excuses for those same players making mistakes that parents yell at 9 year old about in the youth leagues?!?

DallasTX Cane Continue to Preach the Gospel Brotha. I totally agree.
