Solar, I suspect Houston views Major in that way because of his record as a head coach - and because who he chose to serve under him. Giving up 70 to Army will sour many, even if you are a good offensive mind.

Applewhite is young, but has good experience (served under Greg Robinson, Nick Saban, Tom Herman, Mack Brown) and has play calling experience, unlike Coley in his first go around. He’ll do.

Depends on who's getting injured and on what kind of play. If you keep running your QB by design and you keep getting starters missing games due to injury, there's a good chance you're calling the play too often and need to spread the carriers around to a wider variety of rushers. If your losing QB's due to injuries in the pass game, then by design the play call is trying to protect them so it's not on a scheme flaw, it's either poor line play/protection pick up or the QB won't get the pass off in time to keep himself in the huddle.

King is more an athlete who throws with a quick release and live arm than a prototype pro style guy, so there was no reason for him to get smeared in a decent play action pass game while deciding to hurt you with his feet when things broke down, but instead they zone read him constantly in the games I watched and while he was a threat while healthy the number of continual shots eventually snapped him like the former wide-out he was. Kyle Allen was a turnover machine that got benched who was a can't miss blue chip out of high school prototype. It's a lackluster pick considering all the other options but that's Fake Lames and his peter principle over promoted ticket distributor moronic oversight of the athletic department for you!

Jimmy Johnson's record at Stillwater is the epitome of 'the game has changed' posting that people try and blob cop discussion away from when they others don't accept a cupcake payout as a winning season after going 7-6. Oh and they wanted him fired after the Hail Flutie game instead of the staff cleaning he went on too at the time, so I'm not sure your point holds up well, Noel?

Alex D

What’s good Legion/Canespace? As far as recruiting goes, with this early signing period, one of the drawbacks is that if you miss (like we did) in the early signings, then it could become difficult to try and catch up with the bigger schools.

There are only so many top 150 recruits remaining to sign and the bigger programs like the Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Georgia, etc., can now put all their resources exclusively (full court press) to signing those last remaining players. These schools probably have a few remaining scholarship left minus their early draft entries and or dead weight/purged/transfer scholarships.

Guess what? The U will have additional early draft entries/dead weight/transfer scholarships to fill; which would mean possibly gambling and offering scholarships to more 3 or 2 star, grad transfer or even Juco players to fill the void. Consequently, we should not expect some of these lower graded recruits to contribute right away and would be subject to significant strength and conditioning and player development for a 7-6 program. Enjoy your Friday.

UMike

Alex, good post. Diaz mentioned not handing out offers just to fill the roster but getting the right guys. I'd rather be short a few sports then get the wrong guys. IMO it's more important to get the right staff in here then finish this class strong

And?

The point is qualified coaches come in all different forms.

You can’t make blanket statements about anyone cause at the end of the day none of us knows anything.

Herbieibis

AlexD,
We are ready handed out 2 ships on the Oh line to 2 star type players, well they did get a bump up to 3's once a power 5 got them.
I don't know where we are on the ship count but I imagine somewhere in 15 range with grads, players leaving early and transfers.
Manny is right, we need Miami guys BUT at this juncture and still short 4 offensive coaches I don't know where he's going to get these guys from. He may have to eat them words this year. I think defensively, the recruits we are still after we will be okay but offensively, good luck, trying to build a bond with a new offensive staff In one month. Jucco's and Transfers will probably be his best bet.

AeroCane

Where is everyone getting the info that major is our OC? It’s not done yet and supposedly manny is looking at Brian wright of Toledo as well. Not sure who I like or who is going to be better but that’s what I’m reading

JaxCane

Narrative Narrative Narrative......Dont trust Manny hiring anyone he has a previous relationship with...like he has no track record of firing guys who isnt getting the job done.... oh I forgot the BOT made him do that pffft

Manny's staff can't recruit the top guys, his hiring doesn't create a buzz...As if he hasn't put together 3 straight top 5 championship caliber defenses eventhough he has missed out on so many of the so called "cant miss" guy...... Would I like to have more top guys? sure, but do we need them to be dominant? the last 3 years says No.
To quote Manny "how many 5 stars did that top 5 defense have on it ?"

Go Canes!!

Aero this is why. Don’t know if he’s right since nothing has been officially announced.

Per SateoftheU -

Manny has yet to surround himself by a former college head coach and that would be the key to his success. Geoff Collins had “Chief of Staff” Vin Sinagra with over 30 years of college coaching experience to guide him at Temple. Lincoln Riley brought in Ruffin McNeil to guide his program as assistant head coach at Oklahoma. It helps a young head coach to bring in a veteran for guidance and ideas.

If Coach/Mayor Diaz (CMD) can do the same for this offense (top 5 offense, along with maintaining a top 5 defense), I am all in and we will be playing for the national championship next year and many years to come.

I wouldn't mind Brian Wright of Toledo either. I don't see anything final on MA. Bring back James Coley to help with recruiting as long as he says "NO" to any Malik Rosiers.

I know of a former HC with lots of wins in a big conference, thats recently retired, with a history of dabbling in offensive football.

Great point about the Canes elite top 5 defense had no five star recruits on it. The Canes will definitely be in the college football playoffs if they have a top 5 offense and top 5 defense. The problem is, that is a very tall order for CMD in his first year after being #95 in total offense.

Top 30-35 in offense would be a dramatic increase , but probably more where the Canes should have been last season based on talent. If the Canes are top 30 in offense and top 10 in defense, they might make the college football playoffs

One thing to be aware of that is happening this weekend is the AFCA Coaches Convention.

The convention is an opportunity to coaches to network and it can also be an opportunity for job interviews to be conducted.

At this point, we have not been able to confirm whether or not Diaz will be attending this year’s convention, but he has gone in the past.

With all of the coaches from around the country that attend the convention in attendance, it wouldn’t be crazy to think that if Diaz attends he would be able to get some face time with some coaching candidates on the offensive side of the ball there.

The convention runs from January 6-9 in San Antonio, Texas.

I'm still waiting on some of the posters to name a few of the coaches we should hire that would guarantee us these big time guys. Its always we shouldn't have or shouldn't hire "enter a coach name" for whatever reason fits their narrative. This coach can't recruit, that one cant recruit, or he's friends, or he only did this or that at his last job. Never are there names listed as to who should be considered or hired.

solarcane

Native,
I haven't listened to it in years but the part where he steps on the platform, then they talk about his shoes, he mentions time is changing and it will never be the same.

Bulls#*&...You hire an extremely experienced head coach (Rhymes with Butch) and bring in Lane Kiffin as OC and Greg Schiano as DC and as potential coaches in waiting and watch the BUZZ and the recruits roll in like a Tsunami.

Saban quits next year, Urban has already retired and Miami RULES the college football world again for a "Decade of Dominance"!

okay we have names. Schiano and Kiffin would leave their jobs for what reason again? I love this hypothetical however. Better yet let's give Saban $25 million a year to work with. he can keep $10 a year for himself then use $4 a piece on offense and defense coordinators, then use the remaining $7 to finish out his staff.

Miami dynasty is formed for the next 20 years!!
