World Series champion and University of Miami baseball All-American Jon Jay will headline the 2019 First Pitch Banquet on Feb. 8, head coach Gino DiMare announced.
The banquet will take place in the University of Miami Fieldhouse adjacent to the Watsco Center on campus. A cocktail reception will be held at 6 p.m., while the First Pitch Banquet is set to begin at 7 p.m.
"I am excited to announce that Jon Jay will be our First Pitch Speaker for our 2019 banquet," DiMare said. "I can't think of anyone that represents the University of Miami baseball program better than Jon. He is a great example of what a Hurricane baseball player is all about both on and off the field."
A Miami native, Jay starred at Christopher Columbus High School and helped the Explorers win the 2003 Class 6A state championship before a standout career with the Hurricanes from 2004-06. Jay produced one of the best freshman seasons in Miami history in 2004, earning Freshman All-America honors by Collegiate Baseball and Baseball America, and was selected for the All-Tournament teams of both the Atlantic Regional and College World Series. Jay was first-team All-ACC and third-team All-America after leading the Canes with a .408 batting average as a sophomore.
In 2006, as team captain, he turned in another stellar performance, leading the team with a .361 batting average, 31 stolen bases, 77 runs scored and a .490 on-base percentage. Once again, he was selected first-team All-ACC, second-team All-American by Baseball America and was voted UM's Most Valuable Player. For his UM career, Jon has the fourth-highest batting average (.378) and the fifth-highest hit total (254). He also had two 17-game hitting streaks, both listed in the top ten in school history.
Selected in the second round (74th overall) by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2006 MLB Draft, Jay made his big league debut in 2010 and was a valuable member of the Cardinals' 2011 World Championship team. He has also played with the San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs, Kansas City Royals and Arizona Diamondbacks. A 2016 inductee to the UM Sports Hall of Fame, Jay will begin his tenth year in Major League Baseball in 2019.

SEC announces each school received $43.1 million in 2017-18 fiscal year, not including bowl money. That’s an increase from “only” $40.9 million per SEC school from 2016-17

I have a portable battery that I use for fishing that I can bring to the tailgate, however, we'd still need an inverter to convert to AC power.

Imagine being so desperate for a ticket to see Bronco Mendhenhall coach a team he's only recruited three classes of his own players to the roster of that you'd buy tickets to the rest of those snoozers when they won't sell out a single game during any of them? Plus that's even before we get around to your point about how bad they've defended home turf for decades now!
LMAO

With Harrison-Hunt's commitment does anybody know how many scholarships Miami has left?
Posted by: Tim | February 01, 2019 at 09:28 PM
I'll figure it out Tim officially, but I think it's 9.
Posted by: TonyCane | February 01, 2019 at 09:47 PM
Thanks TonyCane I was figuring 9 or 10 but wasn't sure.
Posted by: Tim | February 01, 2019 at 10:33 PM
Hope he has some players to hand them ships too! I know Phillips and the kid from VA Tech are in line to get one. Read on another site that when Milo left, we had 64 on ships plus 10 that hadn't signed and 2 transfers, that would leave us at 76 plus now Hunte.
Posted by: Herbieibis | February 01, 2019 at 10:47 PM
I haven’t done the count on actual scholarships available, but I would guess that there are only a handful of scholarships left. I think that is why the visitors list and the chatter are both smaller than is typical for the Canes leading up to national signing day.
Posted by: BigWindyCane | February 01, 2019 at 11:09 PM
Do we know when Hill and Phillips will commit to Miami? I know we were premature on both.
Posted by: JB | February 01, 2019 at 11:46 PM
Good morning
Imo it’s very clear that rumph is a below average recruiter; he might be an excellent coach but there are way too many high rated cb’s out there and we are Not getting our share!
Posted by: AeroCane | February 02, 2019 at 09:43 AM
Hey AC,
Doesn't the bulk of the blame rest with the HC?
Posted by: nemo2002 | February 02, 2019 at 09:50 AM
Lol at he might be a excellent coach
Have you not watched our Secondary the last 3 Years obviously he can coach and it shows. Here is a Newsflash Every Coach don't have to be a excellent recruiter. U want a mix of recruiters and coaches. Some Coaches are really great recruiters but their Coaching is not good. This is not a new has been that way forever. Tripping about Coach Rumph is should be such a low priority. I don't know but what should be high priority is our Horsecrap QB, OL, WR, ST which was dreadful but you complaining about our CB/Secondary play lmbao U can't be serious. Absolutely Putrid Take.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | February 02, 2019 at 10:13 AM
I would take an excellent coach that can turn 3 star players into NFL players in 3 seasons over a guy that recruits 4 star players every year that bust because the coach is inadequate or lazy.
Posted by: solarcane | February 02, 2019 at 10:24 AM
SolarCane Preach Brotha.
Posted by: Terrance Sullivan | February 02, 2019 at 10:43 AM
Nemo -possibly but it didnt prevent us from getting some key highly rated guys at other positions
Solar and tSully - disagree - there are a lot of good to excellent coaches who can also recruit; we are losing too many key sf cb recruits to my liking Jmo
Posted by: AeroCane | February 02, 2019 at 11:33 AM
I’ll worry about Rumph and Banda the day we’re not rolling out ballers every Saturday.
In the last three seasons guy like Colbert, Jackson, Redwine and Finley have gone from underachievers to draft worthy players.
If all do they do is help develop kids into NFL caliber guys we have nothing to worry about.
Posted by: Go Canes!! | February 02, 2019 at 11:37 AM
The average STAR for each player on each of the teams participating in the SuperBowl this year was below a 3*. This is a fact .....just saying.

UM lost this afternoon on the road to #3 VA . . . by only 10 points.
So, I guess we're losing better. Right?
Posted by: nemo2002 | February 02, 2019 at 04:09 PM
Two games in a row they lost from the opening lineup with the defensive liability midget and the recruiting blunder from down under that can't score starting together.
Apparently you can't teach stupid at the University of Miami athletic department still!

NFL pays more...but Buffalo? Cold cold cold....and they suck bad.....nice town JK12 loves it....but they have been so bad for so long...like my Raiders...Oakland is a terrible place....and we suck bad too......
